I don’t think any game coming out within the next year will be visually better than Horizon Forbidden West

Horizon gets a lot of shit for being cross-gen but out of all the announced games, even next gen titles I honestly don't see a lot of games being able to match the level of fidelity and animations it has anytime soon. Maybe im wrong, and I hope I am but theres no studio I feel like is on the level right now, and UE5 is far from having its first big game out.

I feel like that there Spider-Man 2 is a contender for the crown in 2023, but I would agree Horizon:FW is the best-looking game out there to-date. A big part of that is an appealing world in addition to the high fidelity it's presented in. Lots of color and different biomes.

Closely followed by Demons' Souls remaster--there was a part early on that tricked my brain into a real-life fear response as a bad guy came around the corner and the light realistically bounced off him and the walls. For a split-second, I thought, "This guy wants to kill me; the guy holding a controller." I've been chasing that high ever since and haven't found it

I actually prefer ragnarok

I think Forbidden West gets a bit of a pass because the faces and models are so good, but I don't think there's anything as pretty as Asgard for instance.

I've put 70 hours into H:FW, and I've found the visuals to be pretty underwhelming. The character models are great, but that's about the only thing that's impressed me. Played through RDR2 again before starting H:FW, and I still think Rockstar's efforts are much, much more impressive...

Man do I wish devs would spend more time on visual design rather than the technical aspects. Look at Elden Ring, that game is technically kinda shit but it still manages to be visually stunning thanks to it's art and design.

Anyway, haven't played H:FW but it always makes me wonder if the pics are photo-mode made or of the game actually looks like that in motion.

Ragnarok environments were spectacular, especially Ironwood. But the animations aren't really close to the same level as horizons and natural elements still look higher detailed, like the rocks, water, and moving grass and trees. Theres more going on in the open world.

Spider Man 2 will surpass it for sure but that is it

I feel like people are setting themselves up for disappointment with spider-man 2 but we'll see. The Decima engine is going to show very brightly in the upcoming future when nothing ends up looking this good, aside from maybe Kojimas new game

If spiderman 2 hits 2023 that will probably do it. Otherwise, Haven't seen anything that should topple horizon quite yet.

I personally took that that in-game pic above the rocks, it looks just as good in motion

It's my fav out of those you posted, nice pic.

Game looks real good. Dunno about the models (haven't played it) but those vistas from afar look quite cool.

Any UE5 game will top it, but that plays in another league with its unreal efficiency and photogrammetry database (any developer who uses it has access to top quality models and materials).
Aside that, there will be few contenders.

I was surprised to see Plague's Tale not even come close to it seeing as how they are targeting 1440p 30 fps vs native 4k 30 fps HFW is targeting. They had a 2x or more GPU power available and they produced a game that looks worse in pretty much every way. Very odd.

Starfield looks amazing in some spots, but overall HFW will look better.

Forspoken, FF7-2 and FF16 are being phoned in by Square Enix. No idea why. I doubt FF7-2 makes it next year anyway, but they didnt even bother changing the character models. The biggest upgrade in HFW are the character models.

That leaves Insomniac and while Ratchet looks good, it doesnt look as good as i expect next gen games to look. Its open world sections look last gen compared to HFW which is an actual last gen game. Insomniac needs to man the fuck up and actually take advantage of the next gen lottery they've won. Something GG and SSM were not afforded. If they produce another Ratchet quality native 4k game wasting away the PS5's full potential than Im done with them. Target 1440p like UE5 and deliver excellent visuals, physics, destruction and NPC and traffic simulations.

Ah yes, a surprising comment coming from the "HFW doesn't look any different than HZD graphically" genius.
When did I say it doesn't look any different? I said there was a difference but it's not as big as people make it to be. And no it wasn't that big of a leap, i've seen way bigger leaps between two 8th gen games from the same series.

Okay so you just don't know wtf you're talking about gotcha.

I am just going to say that Decima is my favorite engine. I think it nails the atmospheric nature of lighting and it's technically very impressive.

Which is why Horizon is also very disappointing to me. The issues with those games have nothing to do with tech.

So, I am just waiting for the next Decima title.

Agreed.

I'm so happy they fixed the faces with the sequel as that might have been my only gripe with part 1 was the weird animations on the faces.

As much as I love how it looks, it is still a cross gen game and many games will likely surpass this next year. Spiderman 2 being the massive AAA giant.

I get why they didn't change the models. They likely will touch them up, but they want to keep them looking like part 1 so it can be played together as one complete thing. It makes sense to go this route, even with better hardware. The art direction must come first as theses games are to be seen as 1 whole.

Forspoken's open world and models look imho beyond HFW and likely due to being a next gen only thing.

Starfield looks amazing in some spots, but overall HFW will look better.

Who is to say they won't with Spiderman 2? Even Ratchet is taking advantage of the SSD, so I don't see any evidence they are not taking advantage of any of the next gen stuff btw. Like....zero lol All you are saying is you merely didn't like Ratchet.

That doesn't mean they didn't take advantage of the hardware to make that game though, Ratchet and HFW have completely different directions, designs and different genres and Insomniac has their own look they want for Ratchet, I don't see any evidence that YOU NOT LIKING IT magically is now suddenly not taking advantage of next gen.

Game is gonna be open world filler nonsense but graphics will be insane

No Forza Horizon has looked better than a contemporary Forza Motorsport yet, and this one is coming out 5+ years after 7 so that seems unlikely.
Pretty sure FH4 looks better than FM7. But maybe my memory is playing me tricks since that was long ago and I didn't play the games that much.

Count me among the people who views HFW as a bit overrated in terms of visuals, while also acknowledging it shits on 99% of all games in existence Would've been much closer to this if not for cross-gen:

Edit: Spider-Man 2 or some other unannounced 2023 game from PS studios will take the crown for best visuals.

Whatever Sony will release will be the best (Spider-Man 2?). There is no other studio at that level.

People saying Plague Tale I feel sorry for them. I played it and as soon as Natalie Portman and her little twerp started talking it was obvious it was last gen. The characters and animations are so stiff 😆

Just play Horizon, TLOUR or Ragnarok and your opinion will change real fast.
