I don’t think any game coming out within the next year will be visually better than Horizon Forbidden West

"My kind."

The mildly ironic joke of this whole thread's shit posting conversation is that "good game" I will get "eventually" is very likely going to be a future port of Horizon Forbidden West.

Thanks, Jimbo.

And still the best looking game around. 🤣

Forza motorsports is coming and it looks better than any cross gen games. If gears6 is in development phase it has a good chance to beating hfw in 2023.

Horizon gets a lot of shit for being cross-gen but out of all the announced games, even next gen titles I honestly don't see a lot of games being able to match the level of fidelity and animations it has anytime soon. Maybe im wrong, and I hope I am but theres no studio I feel like is on the level right now, and UE5 is far from having its first big game out.

I agree, only TLOU II, TLOU I Remake, Spiderman Miles Morales, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart and The Matrix Awakens demo hold up or surpasses it in some areas… maybe Spiderman 2 or Hellblade II might be some competition in 2023…idk.

I figured out pop in this thread and mention how the new Sanic game raises the graphical fidelity bar.

That is a cutscene and they've already shown gameplay of this and it looks nothing like that ^^^^ 🤷‍♀️

As for the OP:
Forbidden West might be one of the best looking right now but it's not impressive for me because they're not utilizing the PS5 to its fullest yet. I'll discount anything of the last year and next year. These games are not blowing up my skirt at all.
Its 2023 that we should start to see some really impressive stuff from Xbox and PS.

The hero lighting is probably my favorite graphical 'gimmick' it gives it a very unique look thats not common in gaming, so i dont see how thats generic? I hope Kojima uses it in his next game
It's generic in the sense of every character shot looking darn pretty similar due to the similar lighting. Rather than the more natural approach of modern games, it goes for an almost stage like presentation - the side effect of which is that every shot looks like it's on the same stage. The character feel utterly divorced from the world they're supposed to be standing in.

Its reception reminds me of the crushed blacks of the original Xbone release. Microsoft where processing every frame at a platform level, bumping the contrast, adding some sharpening, and crushing the blacks to hell. Yet, a lot of people really seemed to like the look, because the high contrast caused the micro-detailing to "pop". I thought it looked laughably bad and was thankful they removed it. Same thing here with hero lighting for me. It looks comically bad, akin to the million UE5 "remake" trailers littering YouTube made by kids who just discovered the bloom slider.

The fact that you would need to look at comparison videos to notice a difference means it isn't that big of a leap.
i mean thats one of the method.
I knew theres a difference on the visuals and even the animation the moment i saw the gameplay and play the game on my monitor.

Probably not except tlou1 already looks better!
let's copare - pretty close! (granted, these examples are from cutscenes/talking but real time)

Jesus... Sony first party man... on another level. Maybe Spider Man 2 or that Avatar game OP? I dont think RE4R is getting near this level.

It is really impressive when you stop to take it all. I'm not sure it has the best of anything in one area (water, foliage, textures, mocap, effects, etc.) but all those are top tier and combined together create such a beautiful game to take in.

Technically the game is great, with some of the most geometrically dense character models.

Some of the robots are also great looking.

But the environments... They look so boring to me.

Horizon Forbidden West is the best looking game of the generation thus far but I would have easily sacrificed some visuals for free climbing and a few other quality of life improvements.

Final Fantasy 16 has a chance along with Spidey 2 to be the next wowza visual game.

I don't like how you got to choose between it's awful stuttery looking 30fps mode (other Sony games do not have this problem), a 40FPS mode which has some of the same visual cutbacks as 60fps mode, and finally 60fps where you have a lower resolution (which is expected), cut back alpha effects, and a mediocre sharpening filter (this game needs FSR 2.1). I think the 40FPS mode having visual cutbacks (lower resolution alpha effects) is the biggest disappointment. Not sure if this will all get fixed, hopefully at least we get FSR 2.1 for performance mode.

There's something very off putting to me with Horizon's hero lighting. It looks bad in every shot I see it in, and makes the whole thing look and feel very generic. Combined with Horizon's fairly uninspired design work, it doesn't really land visually for me, despite actually being very technically impressive.
They still have the hero lighting? I couldn't even tell in the game - it's not like the trailers which kinda bummed me out I liked it in those

All of those pretty graphics can't help Aloy be a better protagonist, she's seriously one of the dullest characters of all time

Horizon does wear this crown proudly. Most visually impressive game so far, with unmatched facial models and animation quality. People undermining HFW's visuals are just salty and would just talk instead of sharing actual comparison shots from other console games that look as impressive.

Having said that, I think Spider-Man 2 will be a worthy competitor and may surpass HFW. Also, Death Stranding 2 will likely take over HFW because it also uses Decima, will have the advantage of releasing 1-2 years later and being next-gen only.

HZD had 2-3 things keeping it from sinking and visuals was one of them. It's a remarkable looking game. I hope it is beaten, for gamers sake!

Weird that there's no visual love for Starfield in this thread. Granted, the framerate is a question (and there are some nits to pick with the screens Bethesda posted so far) but it's a game that clearly is going to show where the money was spent.

I kind of don't want to be the one to bring Avatar Frontiers of Pandora into the conversation because I don't trust their 2021 trailer (also it had some weak elements in the open-terrain environment) but I do like Massive and if it really delivers on this then it'll give Horizon a run for its money purely as a jungle-to-jungle comparison.

And then, of course, there's this...

Forza Motorsport reboot is going to be 60fps with HDR, dynamic lighting and real-time raytracing in 4k.

The tech specs on it read great, and I love what they're talking about for the gameplay (plus that damage system looks hot!) In screenshots, it certainly looks like it's everything to dream about... however, that first video demo, some things about it really didn't click visually. Foliage had pop and some issues of simplification, night lighting and ToD was really flat, the environments and effects like water were undercooked... granted, all of that is just window dressing, they're putting the effort into damned-fine looking cars, but I hope the gameplay demo was just a soft example of their tracks and the rest holds up to scrutiny better. The screens they released of different tracks and time of day hit me a lot better.

If they announce (Hell Blade) as a 2023 title ill be shocked.

I feel it might actually get a 2023 date. I know everybody is annoyed to their last nerve that they had the first next-gen 'game' ever revealed and are still going, "I know everybody wants to see new gameplay, but instead, look at these photos we took on our trip to Iceland...", but they've got it running and there's some very cool shit in that demo. Won't be as beautiful as HFW, for obvious reasons, but they're close with Epic and know how to get good stuff out of UE so this should be a strong showpiece title.... whenever it is released.

(*All the pics out there of the Gameplay Reveal are I think framesnaps except this one so quality isn't going to compare well.)

The amount of detail is incredible and it amazes me the job they've done with the faces: all NPCs are different and achieve main character quality of other games. However, lighting is very weird, especially shadows and inner spaces. A lot of times is even difficult to read the image on screen because of the weird lighting and choice of colors. I have the Platinum so it's an opinion based in the game as a whole.

Personally, I prefer the graphics of A Plague Tale Requiem or Gow Ragnarok. I never felt on Horizon FW so amazed taking photos like in those games, specially A Plague Tale. So I aspect next year we will have more games that will be more graphically appealing to me than Horizon.

TLOU Remake easily bests HFW in cinematics and interior lighting. I personally feel some outdoor environments also look better than areas in HFW but I understand people's preference for vibrant fantastical colors. TLOU water/rain tech is more impressive as well.

Although I much prefer Elden Ring's art style and design, Horizon certainly does look a lot closer to those tech demos on the sides of video card boxes. And while everything looks plastic and doll-like, it more than delivers on the promise of how many polygons a GPU can render at once.

Cyberpunk's Phantom Liberty with RT Overdrive will probably still be the best looking game of 2023.

Then again, there's Alan Wake 2, with probably a higher budget than Control. So we'll see.

We're at the point now where people say HFW doesn't even look good? Man there are some raging hate boners for that game lol.

It looks incredible.

I think Spiderman 2 will beat it though. And Cyberpunk on PC already does.

I think Forbidden West has the most realistic character models but TLOU 1 has better gameplay graphics. I felt like playing in a CG movie while playing TLOU 1, a feeling I didn't have in HFW.
The characters in TLOU look over animated in cutscenes to me, like a pixar movie. The characters in HFW look far more realistic.

TLOU P1 looks better and maybe a few other games too, but if you want vibrant shiny colors then go for Horizon. It is subjective too.

On a personal level I think we have had many stunning looking games in recent years and it started with early days of PS4 titles like Driveclube, The Order 1886, Uncharted 4, peaked with TLOU2 on the PS4, RDR2 looks fantastic too and now we have Demon's Souls Remake, Ratchet and Clank, GT7, Forza 5, Flight Sim, Horizon, God of War Ragnarok, TLOU P1.
Imho they all look fantastic and I don't fully understand the complaint of people about graphics in general.

No one is gonna beat horizon in enemies\character render in any open world game for a long time, even if they beat aloy details, they are not gonna beat the fact that every minor character is as detailed as the main protagonist. not sure if many smaller games are gonna achieve that, ragnarock doesn't, requiem doesn't, tlou remake barely does it.

And nobody is gonna beat the dinobots.

Some games are probably gonna beat other graphical features tho.

I feel like people are setting themselves up for disappointment with spider-man 2 but we'll see. The Decima engine is going to show very brightly in the upcoming future when nothing ends up looking this good, aside from maybe Kojimas new game
Spiderman model looked exactly the same as the old one, they are gonna make the bg improvements with the city, but i have no much faith in their characters beating the characters in horizon.

Visually in the 20 fps category absolutely! But PC still has it beat, because Sony can't be fucked to allow their devs to open themselves to mods to make a game better under a hobbyist's thumb.

How does it go from a juggle's beginning at ~0:48 to the next hit changing into a kick in the face as he seemingly stands? 0/10.
These fuckers are generating lighting from their fists and growing wings and shit but whats bothering you is Jins feint punch to kick?

You think Sony has any say in whether we mod their games or not.
