I just found out skipping tutorials is common in gaming. Do you? Why or why not?

From the comments I've been seeing they say most tutorials are boring and they just want to get into the game quickly.

Fine, understandable, but what's the point getting to the game if you don't really know how to play?

Do you think this contributes to the low completion rate of games?
Do devs just make boring tutorials most of the time?

I skip, cause if it goes too indept I get bored, if it doesn't go indept I don't need it, I mean games are made for retarded nowadays.

I pretty much never skip tutorials. Although, if it's a multiplayer game or something that I'm playing with friends then I tend to skim them as opposed to really trying to understand lol

It’s not like devs constantly reinvent the wheel. Almost everything is derivative of something else or is a sequel/spiritual successor/prequel etc. if you’ve played a lot of games I feel like you’ll grasp and figure out almost any game very quickly by yourself.

Depends on games.

I'm more likely to do tutorial online because I at least owe it to my team to not be figuring out what the buttons are their first time matched with me.

This is also my opportunity to change any controls to my liking before jumping in. Takes 5 minutes to come in prepared instead of rushing around a menu I don't know during respawn to change sensitivity and melee attack button.

Of course if my friends are playing a game I don't know around a TV and hand me a controller I won't be asking for a tutorial though.

They need to let you move instantly. Get a feel for the game and that connection. Then drop in 1 tip. Then play more. Then another tip. Games that start with a brick wall are just badly designed tutorials.

Unless it's something I feel I may not be able to pick up, I will always skip it.

Probably ~90% of the time.

100% of the time for story cutscenes.

Some games are copycats, tutorials aren't necessary in this case unless it's the first of it's kind to you.

I HATE tutorials of any kind with a passion. If your game design is so shit you need to explicitly press the players nose on basic control mechanics you have failed as a game designer and should change your profession.

Sometimes the tutorials are annoying as fuck. Like press left to move left.

Surprised Nicolas Cage GIF

But depends on the complexity of the game.
Other times. I swear they explain something once then half way through a long ass game it comes up. But no refresher.

No, because I'd prefer to know what I'm doing.

I do get impatient with long warm-ups that include lots of expository cutscenes mixed with tutorials. But I bear with it.

Most games control in pretty much the same way so if a tutorial just teaches the same thing as a different game it's worthless.

First thing I want to do is dive into the gameplay and see if I like the general feel of the game; then if something needs explaining I'll search online for a quick answer. Tutorials are overly long/drawn out/patronising and mostly unnecessary. Ain't nobody got time for that.

I started Gears 5 on Gamepass. The first 20 minutes were literally 'this is how you walk, this is how you shoot, ohh, and this is how to use the grenades'. Aint nobody got time for that. Turned the shit off and never returned.

I played videogames for decades now, I know how to shoot, move and point my gun at the enemies!

I will skip if the game rules are simple like for an action adventure game where the informations are very intuitive.

I won't skip if I play something that has any unic rules like hero's loop. Games where reading its rules are mandatory.

Depends on a game. Most modern action adventure games or RPGs have very similar mechanics to games I have played before so usually it’s safe to skip unless there is narrative information I would want to go through with a first gameplay.

However a lot of strategy games or sim games absolutely have a skill wall that you want a tutorial run through. Of course the question is if tutorial is any good and updated.

Depends on the game.
If it's something with a fairly standard design I'll usually skip the tutorial.

If it's a game that feels like it will have more complex or uncommon mechanics I'll do it.

Most games (at least in the AAA and AA) space don't really need a tutorial thought. At most a couple of pop up screens showing the controls and explaining a couple of key mechanics

if only they made something that explained a game without being so intrusive.🤔

Most tutorials just treat you like it's your first game, move the mouse to look araound, press W A S D to walk around, the same is true for forced button prompts, i know that i have to press E to interact thank you game.

Because it’s always the same shit - X to melee, B to jump, A to interact. LT aiming, RT shooting.

There are very few games that warrant the need to play through the tutorials. If I feel like it's necessary, or if you get something for doing it, then I'll do it no questions asked. But if it doesn't feel necessary at all, and it provides nothing, I skip it.

I started wanting a skip button when 10 years old me was playing Driver on PlayStation. Getting those perfect 180/360 spins was killing me. But as an adult I pretty much take my time, I don’t want to miss anything.

there is a rreason i can't stand mobile game, none of game on google play store i download and play more than 30 minutes, because its tutorial is so damn long and annoying

I usually notice I missed something in a game when it seems way harder than it should be. Usually, I have missed some important gameplay element.

I find that most games with tutorials don't let you skip them in the first place, and if they do, then they usually have a way to access the information from the menu or something anyway, so I'm not sure how big of a thing this is.

The best games use the tutorial as both a gameplay and a story intro. For most FPS type games the controls are pretty standard, but stuff like stealth or melee occasionally have little peculiarities so it's nice when the game highlights them for you.

Of course a game -should- have a proper manual but haven't seen one of those in decades. A picture of the control scheme is about the best you can hope for, a full in-game manual with video clips or practice arenas for complex movies is absolutely top tier.

It depends. Some tutorials are so fucking stupid and pointless that I'll skip. Like I don't need a tutorial to tell me how to make my character walk forward with the left stick.

I'm retarded?
Old games tutorials? Dont skip. Sometimes you had no idea about some mechanics. New games tutorials? Press F to open door, when the prompt already tells you to do that. Yeah skip.

I skip them if they're a training area separate from the main part of the game, they should always be integrated. I hide them in the options in some modern games if they're appearing multiple times or explaining some very basic stuff.

The only games that need tutorials are 4x and Economy Simulators, games like Anno, Stellaris, Galactic Civilizations ect, games that are inherently more complicated from the get go.

By all means skip them, but then don't whine like a little bitch about the design or mechanics here or on other platforms when you can't do shit.
