An important thing to note is that the Vertex 3 doesnt need TRIM to last a long time. RAID0 Vertex 3's anyone? :p

Honestly, that's my biggest reason for wanting to go Vertex 3. Nearly perfect garbage collection which doesn't need TRIM? Yes please!

I wonder if going 2x Vertex 120GB with RAID0 would be better than a single 240GB...

Performance-wise, of course. It's essentially doubling the speed of the drive.

3x vertex 120gb, do it. You know you want to

You could have the biggest drive benchmark peen ever. Thats the equivalent of like at least a 14 incher.

The games wouldn't load, they'd just happen.

As if things like bloatware and cheap components weren't enough, here's yet another reason to build your own systems.

Samsung Installs Stealthy KeyLogger on Brand New Laptops
http://www.eweek.com/c/a/Security/Samsung-Installs-Stealthy-KeyLogger-on-Brand-New-Laptops-265944/

Add StarLogger to Sony's rootkit and your PC's ready to go.

Now we just need a viable way to build our own laptops, slates, etc.

Just another reason to format clean install even on a new machine.

I'm thinking it could get bottlenecked somewhere...perhaps the RAID controller could actually make things worse due to the real-time compression. Maybe the raid controller won't handle such high throughput.

Hopefully we see some tests!

OKay...here is my revision for the PC I'm building my friend. Before shipping, I'm just under $800, which is perfect. If this looks good, then all I have to say is thanks for the suggestions, those who helped.

I am by far not a professional builder, but you have an AMD motherboard with an Intel processor. Wouldn't those not be compatible?

So fucking tempted to pull the trigger on 2 of those 120 GB Vertex 3s.
But I think I'll hold out until the new CPUs from both Intel and AMD are out and do a fresh build (with the 6970 I got recently) instead of migrating my current system to SSDs now, and then back to HDDs after I build my next box.

The motherboard you picked doesn't even support Intel, let alone the 2500k.

Hey guys looking for some advice. I want to upgrade my system for Battlefield 3, Guild wars 2, Tera online, and games like that. I want to run them with great/the best settings possible.

Here is my system, what do I need to upgrade before then? I can wait, but just looking for ideas now.

Should I upgrade peices or do I need to just start over and rebuild?

Windows 7 64bit
Gigabyte GA-MA790X-UD4P
AMD Phenom II X4 940 3.0GHz
4GB ram
ATI Radeon HD 4890
a couple WD caviar blacks
Antec Sonata Elite Black 0.8mm cold rolled steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
Antec TruePower New TP-650 650W Continuous Power ATX12V V2.3 /

I've also never overclocked this cpu because i'm just not sure how or how far to take it. Can anyone recommend me a guide for overclocking this processer or some tips or a website or anything, thanks.

BF3 at max settings is going to be a stretch for your current system, maybe a big oc and a GTX570.

Holy Crap this CM Hyper 212 + is amazing, my idle temps dropped from 45C to 25C, I also think the thermal paste was put on wrong the first time, since I spread it out, since I was used to laptops.

Wonder how my 4.2ghz will run at full load now....

Yeah man...best $30 I spent on my build. I was actually going to just use the Intel retail cooler until GAFfers convinced me otherwise. So glad. Especially since installing a 212+ after your build is done is kind of a pain!

4.2 GHz is nothing for the i5-2500k. Clock that baby...you should be able to get 4.5 GHz+ easy.

I'm planning on building a 2500k system. Do you need 3 sticks of ddr3 using a p8p67 to run full speed? I see most people only ordering two sticks but I have to ask to be sure :p

Two or four sticks of 1.5v DDR3.

Hey man, you did an awesome job with the cable management!

How did you end up liking that case?

Love the case, lots of room, good airflow. I was surprised how good it look after I took a picture, was proud.

Nice monitor. I got this same one a while ago, and it looks absolutely amazing

Only problem with the monitor is slight bleed in from the edges. Love how there is no stand and it's just all monitor. Been happy, took awhile to find a decent priced 2ms monitor I liked.

Newegg Shellshocker deal:

ZyXEL NWD2105 IEEE 802.11b/g/n USB 2.0 Wireless N-lite Adapter Up to 150Mbps Wireless Data Rates WEP, WPA (WPA-PSK), WPA2 (WPA2-PSK)

$9.99 free ship.I think there are taxes in CA, NJ, NY, and KY (?). Reviews are medium. Needs a driver download.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833181131

I ordered one of the following:
Cavalry CAHDD 1TB USB 3.0 Black 2-bay Dock - a two bay USB 3 dock and it comes with a 1TB Hitachi hard drive.
$79 upfront, $49 after the rebate.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822101220

From reading about it, the USB 3 controller on your MB needs updated drivers if your MB is around 6 months old or older.

Looking to upgrade from my Core2Duo E6420@ 3.2 Ghz to play BF3 at 1920x1080.

Going to reuse my Gigabyte GTX 460 1GB, Corsair TX750 power supply, and F3 Spinpoint as storage drive. Possibly get another 460 for SLI down the road.

My build is looking like this:
Intel i5 2500k
Asus P8P67 Pro
Corsair Vengeance 8gb (2x4gb)
Corsair H60 CPU cooler
Corsair 600T or 650D
Win7 Home Premium 64-bit

I want to get a SSD for OS drive. Might stick with all corsair and get a performance 3 64 GB or Force F60. Also I might want to get a blu-ray drive. Suggestions?

Just wondering. Is there any difference between using a graphics card of the same brand as your motherboard to one that isn't the same brand?

Nope unless you have stock in the company and want to give them business.

Hey Gaf, I don't post a lot but I wanted to give everyone in this thread a great big thank you. Been lurking here for a few weeks now, and just completed my gaming rig. Pretty much any question I had was answered here. Thanks to everyone I now have a stupid sexy i5 2500k running a GTX 570. Gaming goodness awaits me :)

Well my rig is completed. I am still loading programs, updates etc. Still need to tidy up the wires, but so far she is alive and seems to be running fine. Now that it is up and going, I have some questions regarding the CPU.

I have the Sandy Bridge I72600K & Asus P8P67 PRO Motherboard.

1.) What is the normal idle temps for the CPU?
2.) How easy is it to overclock the processor? I want to go to 4.5mhz, but never have done a CPU OC.

Is there a step by step guide to do the overclock using the ASUS programs I have? I also have the Cooler Master 212+ that most of you suggested. Like the other user above, I have been really unsure if I did the thermal paste correctly, but using real temp, it is reporting around 28-29c on idle, sitting on the desktop.

Thanks for any help.

OK guys, I need some help to localize what my problem may be.

Recently, my monitor keep crapping on me. I linked it to my computer both with DVI and VGA cables but the problem is the same : at some point, when I play a game or a Youtube video and try to go in fullscreen mode, the screen goes black, sound stops and I get this strange "D-SUB GESTION ALIM" message (sorry, in english it means "power management")

http://i54.tinypic.com/21etelc.jpg

Now, I think many things could be the source of errors :

GPU : Gainward GeForce GTX 560 Ti Golden Sample
GPU Clockspeed : 900 Mhz
Memory Clockspeed : 2100 Mhz

This thing might be my nemesis. It can consume up to 395 W in busy mode and as we'll see, my PSU is not the best ever. Roughly, the consumption is the same as a ASUS GTX 580.

PSU : Cooler Master GX Series PSU - 550 Watt
Probably what makes me cringe (?) 550 W is probably seen in GAF as a blasphemy but I decided to give it a serious try on Cooler Master CPU Power Calculator. As mentioned above, I filled the GPU line with a GTX 580 just to be sure that I'll get a strict minimum wattage result.

The outcome :

tarii1.png

This is exactly the PSU I am using. But will this really be sufficient with a webcam and an X360 controller in addition ? I don't doubt it, but I can't exclude the possibility for it to be overloaded.

Monitor : LG - Flatron E3450V-PN
Believe it or not, this guy (who has the same problem as me) posted a video with what seems to be my monitor :

http://img801.imageshack.us/i/vido0021.mp4/

But I didn't hear anything crazy about this monitor.

Cables :regular shit provided by LG

So GAF, do you think I have a deeper problem that what I listed here ? Please, help me to refine the problem. I can't game, that's as simple as that and I bought this machine in order to be able to play upcoming games + emulation. Talk about a bummer. Also, I can use my computer for normal task easily. It seems that under big load, like Youtube fullscreen 1080p, Metroid Prime Intro scene, the monitor just gives up. I want to know what's happenning. Thanks in advance.

TheExodu5, thanks for the help with the monitor mate I think I'll keep it. I chose an IPS-LED because it's more energy efficient and brighter than usual CCFL monitors while it still gives you great colors after calibration. My room is bright like hell in 8 out of 12 months so I need a really bright monitor otherwise I can't see a thing :D

Damn you guys have awesome cable management, I really should work on that in my case.

So I am using a crappy Asus 22 inch monitor at the moment, it's 1920x1080 but I got it for free and its been pretty good so far! yet I am thinking of making an upgrade soon to a Dell 27 inch Ultrasharp (U2711), because it's an IPS panel and it also has a nice bump in resolution.

Anyone use one of these monitors? Would love to know your thoughts on what they are like!

Also thinking of jumping on the SSD bandwagon, but it seems like it is better to wait until the Vertex 3 hits the market in quantities and prices come down.

I've always been partial to Corsair PSUs and Pioneer optical drives.

I've bought an LG IPS236v for 190 euro if this thing is half as good as they claim(IPS(!), LED, 5ms) it might be the best 'bang for buck' monitor ever. It should be here later today or tommorow.

cant you buy it from other e-tailers?
The superclocked version has faster clock speeds so it should be a fair bit faster than the normal version at the cost of more heat and power draw. If the price difference isnt that much get it, if not just get the normal version and overclock it.

For PSU, i recommend Antec, Corsair, Coolermaster and OCZ.
Optical drives... just pick the cheapest OEM you can find. You will probably only use it for installing OS... thats the case with me anyway.

I just got a new 1080p HDTV(Yay!) but I can't output over 720p over HDMI and I don't know why:(

My main monitor(2560x1440) is connected to a 470 Geforce.
The HDTV is connected to the second 470(SLI) from the Mini HDMI input. That mini HDMI input goes to a male to male HDMI converter, which goes to a 15 meter HDMI cable into the HDTV.

I don't get it, because the first 470 alone should be able to to wield the monitors native 2560x resolution.

So why can't the second SLI card not even handle 1080p? A signal simply won't come up if I try anything over 1280x ...

I don't think it's the cables because 720 works fine. I tried mixing up the inputs(running HDTV from first 470), and such but no luck. Also tried different HDMI inputs on the TV.. No go.

And I am sure the TV supports 1920x resolution!(This LG - http://reviews.cnet.com/flat-panel-tvs/lg-infinia-60pk950/4505-6482_7-33939225.html )

Anyone who can help or have an Idea? the only thing I can think off is that the 1080 signal can't run through a 15-16 meter cable without it's own power supply, which means I would need some sort HDMI power adapter/splitter/thingy. sigh.

Is there actually a utility that allows you to see live how much power your entire build consums ? I need to see if it is my power supply that craps on me or my video card.
