"I need a New PC!" 2011 Edition of SSD's for everyone! |OT|

Quick questions:

Is it worth it to get a Sata III SSD or should I bite for a II?

Can I use a USB 3.0 device on a USB 2.0 interface? Obviously it won't be as fast but will it work?

how about this for a more budget approach?

bundle:
Intel Core i5 2500K Unlocked, Socket 1155, Sandy Bridge, Quad Core, 3.3GHz, 6MB Cache, 95W, Retail
+ 4GB (2x2GB) Corsair XMS3 DDR3 PC3-12800 (1600), Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 9-9-9-24, XMP, 1.65V
+ Asus P8P67-M PRO, Intel P67 Express, 1155, PCI-E 2.0, DDR3 2200/2133, SATA6GB/s RAID, MATX

£323. Then add:

- 1TB Samsung HD103SJ Spinpoint F3, SATA 3Gb/s, 7200rpm, 32MB Cache, 8.9 ms, NCQ, OEM £40
- 500W Corsair CMPSU-500CXUK Builder Series, 80% Eff', 120mm Fan, Single Rail, ATX (£47)
-Samsung SH-S222A/BEBE 22x DVD±R, 12x DVD±DL, DVD+RW x8/-RW x6, DVD-RAM x12, IDE Black OEM (£13)
- generic midi tower case (£23)
- Asus GeForce GTX 460 TOP 768MB NVIDIA Graphics Card (£113)
- W7 OEM (£78)

total: £637. so £200 cheaper than my previous offering. Lose the bluray drive (can always add one later when I get the ripping bug, which was all it would have been used for), and lower GPU (which also means lower PSU)

a GTX460 would still be a great card for a 1080p TV? Wouldn't be massively gaming on it, but I'd like it to run stuff like NFS:Shift 2 and Dirt 3 really smoothly on high detail.

Its a big difference in price. Don't mind stumping up for the more expensive rig if I can get a feel for what the delta would be. Most of the kit is the same, so I think it comes down to 6950 Vs GTX460.

Just want to get a final check from gaf to see if this is good. Also, I remember a couple pages back someone saying AS5 wasn't good anymore. What is the thermal paste I should be using? thanks.
You will need to Flash the firmware on the Samsung drive using a USB. fyi

See if you can get a Seasonic PSU at the same price range. The CX series is a massive downgrade in quality.

Managed to OC it to 4.5GHz(from 3.3GHz) with no problems. :) Got a blue screen when I tried 4.7GHz though(this was after an 55 minutes of Prime95). So how do you stress test GPU's though? Also with Prime95?

Is that with the stock cooler?

I could use some recommendations for HDD configurations. I'm doing a workstation/gaming build. A fairly powerful setup.

I plan to use that 60GB Crucial SSD for the boot drive, but am not sure what to do beyond that, or with regards to RAID. I'm probably going with an Intel DP67BG, so most RAID types are supported.

So ...

Boot Drive - The SSD is pretty fast, is RAID 0 actually worth it? RAID 1 might make sense, but I do back up my machines so it isn't a necessity (though admittedly I've never re-imaged a multi-HDD from WHS, so I'm not sure if it's problematic). Suggestions?

Data Drives - This is where it may get more complicated. I plan to use a number of VM's during some of my use-cases. Anyone have experience using a separate HDD for VM's versus data? Would I get enough of a performance increase to warrant it versus just setting up a partition in the data drive?

Either way, what is the recommendation for RAID on Data Drives and/or a VM's Drive? SSD is not an option here. Thanks in advance!

My 2500k reaches 4,3Ghz with stock cooler and the auto overclock profile my Asus mobo has (don't remember the name, logo on the right)

That's pretty good. I think you could reach 4,5Ghz if you manually over-clock. Wondering If I applied the cooling paste wrong. I reckon it's the ventilation though. Eitherway 4.5GHz seems decent enough to run full time. :D

Thanks. Would you mind commenting on this on which I posted a couple of pages back? It's my preference but a fair amount more expensive

early days, but thoughts on this? All from Scan and I can get free delivery from them.

- W7 home premium 64bit OEM (£78)
- Samsung SH-B123L/RSBP 12x BD-ROM & DVDRW Combo Player (£47)
- XFX HD 6950 ATI - AMD Radeon Graphics Card - 2GB (£228)
(I'll probably get a 1GB to save £25, only running 1080p)
- Hyper 212 CPU cooler (£19)

= £798 (~£775 with a 1GB 6950).

Then I just need a case I think. Still looking around, need one thats compact and discreet - sleek rather than lumpy and definitely no neon or anything. Should be able to get something for less than £75, keep the overall price below £850?

Would a silverstone sugo sg02 take a full size GPU like the 6950?

Steam > Update AMD Drivers.jpg

I prefer to do a clean install with driver sweeper, but it's not required.

edit: beaten. lol.

I'll see your pic and raise you:

Ya, you would think that's the best bet, but the newest drivers have mouse cursor lag, and a glitched windows 7 loading screen for me. I have to research if there's driver problems before I install them. Love ATI drivers!

Thanks but two questions have arose from this post:

#1 "Much reduced speeds" compared to USB 3.0 or USB 2.0?

#2 When will the next sandforce revision wil most likely be?

Hi GAF. Need to build a PC for a friend. Will be Sandy Bridge-based. Since I don't intend to overclock it, I'm thinking of going for 2500 and the H67 mobos. Is this a good idea? Also, the PC will be used for light gaming at most, will a 460 be overkill? What's the next best cheaper bang for buck card?

scorcho said:
USB 2.0 speeds top out at ~30MB/sec, USB 3.0 is ~150MB/sec i think.

Thanks. But I guess what I was trying to ask is that if I use a USB stick that has a USB 3.0 interface on a 2.0 port if it will go slower than using a USB 2.0 stick.

Wait, ATI drivers are that bad?

I wanted to get the MSI R6950. Great performance, great temps and it uses very low power! Lower than a typical 6950.

Here's my final build list:

Look alright? Price is around $820 with combo deals.

Just need to sell my MacBook Pro and then I'm off to building. :D (anyone looking to buy one?)

Is there any point in getting the Core i7 2600K, or is the i5 2500K the one to get?

2600K has Hyperthreading and the 2500k does not. It is good in some Windows applications such as Photoshop. If you are gaming however, the 2600k will make little difference over the 2500k.

Depends on what you plan to use your computer for. Gaming? Video editing? Casual stuff?

Mostly gaming, some programming (only small, Java stuff), a little video editing for a website I'm working on. Will it make a difference in Fraps' recording framerate drop?

Ill also be using the Dolphin emulator a bit.

I re-seated the 212+ today and I am no longer able to move it at all by hand but the temps are largely the same as before (Not bad but not great). What temps are you guys getting on the 2500k at stock (On 212+ and/or stock cooler) and then while over clocked? I'm using Real Temp.

no, the USB 3.0 stick should max out at 2.0 speeds.

Kind of odd to me that the HAF X case is free shipping but the 600T is $20. =/

Oh sweet, TigerDirect has it for $129.99 after rebate with free shipping.

edit: And no tax!

Newegg? Ya, there shipping has went to shit. You have to pay for shipping on free shit as well. They used be top tier, but now Amazon has put them to shame.

Most stuff I have ordered from New Egg has been free shipping.

I think I found my case. The Tiger Direct price with no tax, free shipping, and overall lower price than NewEgg has me sold. Plus the pics above of the excellent cable management. I also like the fan filters.

edit: omg, an additional $5 off with Google Checkout! (which I use!)

That picture inspired me. Just ordered that case.

I also like the fan filters. Can't wait to build this.
