Hey guys, could use some advice, a buddy of mine is looking to sell his entire computer setup (monitor, case, etc.) and he's asked me to help him. What do you think would be a fair asking price for the below system? Assuming there's no shipping involved and it's local pickup. Everything is in great condition BTW.

That should be fine, just make sure the processor and memory are up-to-the-job too (we don't know anything about the machine other than it's a crap eMachines).
I really don't know what It's packing. It's fairly newish, she got it from Walmart. It can run netflix now no problems so I'm really just adding a hdmi port and a little more video rendering muscle. What's the NVIDIA version of the 6450?

If you were building a silent, non-gaming pc, would you choose the Corsair 550D, fractal R3, or Antec P280?

Some guy is offering to trade his PC for my friend's Alienware M18x with 6990M's in Crossfire.

Corsair 600T
Asus Matrix GTX 580
Corsair 750 watt PSU NZXT 90 Hale 1000w PSU
Corsair Dominator 2133 Mhz RAM 16gb
Asrock Z68 Extreme Gen 3
Intel 2500k
Corsair H100 cooler
OCZ Revodrive 3 x2 240GB SSD

Considering his M18x is worth around $2-2.1k, how much do you guys think that setup is worth (used) so I can figure out how much cash on top the other guy should give in trade?

Thanks in advance for any input. My personal estimate of value for that build (used) is around $1600-1800?

6-800ish. I'd say put it up for $800 on Craigslist and see if you get bites.
$800 is fair for pickup. A little less would be acceptable. $750 would be my minimum.

Looked standard until I saw two REVO drives. The hell?
I'd dump the REVO drives and take ~$850 for it?

It's one Revodrive... they're called 'x2s' I guess. And they go for $600+ new. I was gonna tell him to dump the Revodrive for $300-400 and dump the GTX 580 for $300 or so. You think that build is only worth $850? I think without the Revodrive, it's worth around $1600 used?

^^Is the psu an AX, HX, TX, etc...?

Let me find out...

EDIT: It's actually an NZXT Hale 90 1000w PSU. :\ Err... that's kinda lame. Not sure on how good NZXT power supplies are.

Thanks for the replies.

Yeah I was thinking the same actually, so I'm happy to see I wasn't that far off.

I posted $850 figuring that they'd want to haggle the price a bit.

NZXT 80+ PSUs seem to be pretty solid from the one review I read.

What I'd value a bulk sell at. Usually whole PC's go for less because no one likes selling 8 parts.

Corsair 600T - 120
Asus Matrix GTX 580 - 400
Corsair 750 watt PSU - 70
Corsair Dominator 2133 Mhz RAM 16gb - 80
Asrock Z68 Extreme Gen 3 - 100
Intel 2500k - 180
Corsair H100 cooler -80

~1000 - bulk discount = a bit over $900, I'd offer $850 together. Just from doing online trading for a while the listed prices are a bit over what items usually sell for.
Again, that's what I'd value it at. Doing a trade you both can overvalue the Desktop/Laptop parts and do adds on that. Depends on who you are dealing with...

I don't know why people use that word as a synonym for cost or purchase. You use that word when you talk about stocks or items that return money (e.g. real estate).

Just seems like it's pulled from a thesaurus to sound professional, but whatever.

knitoe is right.
With the better performance of an ssd, he could get more work done, and thus more money. Sounds like a good investment to me. Sorry, couldn't resist.
Parts for my build are slowly trickling in as I wait on and Order deals. Can't wait!

Ok, what I forgot to mention is its the Asrock Z68 Extreme 7 (not 3 or 4) Gen 3, which is a $260 motherboard.

The Corsair RAM looks to go for about $200+ new. So that's worth at least $150. I agree with everything else...

Pfft, 2133 is close enough to 1866.
$180 for mobo then

R3 is the cleanest/least assuming, most compact, and has a very effective, flexible dampening solution. Can be found for ~$100. Gaming or not, if the CPU will be OC'd, or GPU is IE, add 1-2 inexpensive, silent fans and you're good.

If you're in the US:

- Antec P280 ~ $112 + free shipping

- Fractal Design Define R3 ~ $114 + free shipping

Corsair 550D MSRP is $160, street generally ~$150. If you are ok with rebates, Newegg has it for $140, then $120 AR. Price differences removed, it beats out the R3, and is a toss up with the P280 @ $112.

Tell me what you think about this. All of that stuff with the Revodrive 240 GB included (I figure that can sell for $300-400?) + $400 cash on top in trade for the M18x. Yay/nay?
I would to be piecing together a custom desktop after the laptop is sold.
High speed RAM and REVO drives cost a lot, but I wouldn't consider them in a build.
If it's easier to work a trade I'd still drop the REVO and do the equiv $ trade for whatever you think the laptop is worth.

Eh he's been trying to sell this laptop for months. I too told him to just build his own desktop with cheaper parts, since I think a lot of that stuff is overpriced (case, RAM, etc) and not beneficial to performance. So at this point I think he's willing to settle for a really nice desktop. If he sells the Revodrive for $300-400, he'll get that desktop + $700-800 cash on top for his laptop. And all he'll need to upgrade on that desktop is the GPU whenever the time comes. I think he should sell the 580 for about $350 and pick up a 7950 or GTX 680.

Quick question. I have the Chaser MK-1 which has two 200mm fans and one 140mm fan. Anyway, they all seem to be connected to one cord from what I can tell (could be wrong). I'm not entirely sure what I should plug the cord into...Pwr_fan, Cha_Fan 1, Cha_2. I tried each of them, because its the same connection type. They all do basically the same thing which is activate the 140mm fan. My two big ones are apparently meant to be tied to the fan control settings (I have low and high on top of my case). I tried the buttons though and nothing happened, they're still lifeless. Should they have their own connections? I honestly looked at every cord and couldn't find any others that would plug into the fan connectors on the motherboard. I traced the one I have connected and as I said, it looks like it travels through to all of the fans.

Might be a stupid question, but I've never done this before. Thanks.

*Edit - I was talking to a friend and he suggested that the others may need to connect directly to the PSU. I'm heading out so I've put it back together, but I think that may be my problem. There must be a molex connector I missed.

2 questions for PC-Gaf:

1) I need a new external hard drive. Is Seagate a good brand? Is Amazon a good retailer pricewise? Thinking about this one.

2) My video card (8800GT represent) is louder than ever. Is this a red flag? I'd rather not purchase a new card if I don't have to because I fear the install process. It's way over my head.

Anyone know anything about Audigity 2 ZS? I got it in a craiglist trade. Going to be connecting two stereo speakers to it. Guessing it will be better than my on board motherboard sound?

I'm hoping for a white version soon. Extremely awesome case for the price though. If you're looking for a roomy, quiet, and subdued case that even has quite a bit of support for watercooling, this is what you want.
Any chance prices will be dropping on 580's soon?
Supposedly $50 or so when 680 hits. Hoping those 580 classified hydro coppers drop a bit too. Might jump on one of those.

One better then the other, or does it matter for these budget cards.

I think the Nvidia is better although it is slightly more expensive than the AMD if you're just comparing the GT 520 and HD 6450.

Always though, take a look at the older series (e.g. GT 430). Maybe a card will be cheaper and better for price.

Looking at the two cards again, I like how the HD 6450 is passively cooled (i.e. no fan) in most models, so if you're looking for silence, go for that.

I had an audigy 2 that I eventually just threw in the garbage. Wasn't worth the hassle with Windows 7. Probably not what you wanted to hear.

So before I place my order, I'd like you guys' opinion on this. Would I be able to OC my i5 2500k to say, 4Ghz on a Corsair AX850 Gold, as well as run 2x GTX 570s? Or should I get a beefier power supply? I only have one 570 atm, but if the prices go down after the 600 series come out, I might get another one to run them in SLI.

I asked this before bu it got buried as one of the last post of the previous page.

Can the I5 2500K integrated graphics play Diablo 3 decently on a 1600 - 900 monitor?

Ask in the Diablo 3 beta thread, or on Blizzard forums.

Should be fine. Make sure you know what you're getting into with SLI. If you don't like fiddling with drivers/settings/profiles, probably not your cup of tea.

I assume you own this and aren't thinking of upgrading to a new system?

Because if you go by the early Ivy Bridge leaks (which is a nice upgrade from Sandy Bridge with IGP), the AMD A8-3870 still beats it by a pretty hefty margin (and is much cheaper). AMD is clearly the superior choice if you want run an IGP system.

Easily. OC'ing a 2500K adds 45W.

So, is Xigmatek Asgard Pro Chassis a quiet case? From fishing around looking for reviews I can tell it seems like a decent case, and I like the fact it has 2 front USB 2's, aswell as a 3 for future use.

Not really. Shinobi is close to the same price and a lot more quiet. Add a decent fan or two and you've got yourself a good setup.

Sort of a random question, but if you have an SSD and a regular HDD, how quickly can you transfer large files between the two? The example would be if I wanted to have a few games that I was currently playing on the SSD for increased performance, and then cycle them out when playing different games. So...how long would it take to transfer a 10GB-20GB file or so?

Matter of minutes. Depends on the speed of the mechanical drive mostly, that's your bottleneck. Since it's sequential read/write, it is what mechanical drives excel at most.
I'm in the UK, I've looked around my usual computer sites and the bitfenix shinobi seems about a tenner more, why is it so much quieter?
The design and materials used. The case is really what defines your tactile experience with your computer. Not something to skimp on here or there unless you're on an extremely tight budget.

Very fast or fast, depending on which way you're going. Maybe 3-4 mins?

True, wise words. I'll have to have a look for more articles on this, I really do want USB's (not a huge amount but at least a couple, 3 would be great) but the more silent the better.

I'm looking at the NZXT 210 elite, Xigmatek Asgard Pro and the Bitfenix Shinobi. Is there any big advantage either of those have over eachother which I'm missing here?

10,000MB / ~90MB/s = 2 minutes at best. (If it was one large file). Probably 15 minutes at worst?
So not long at all.

Every place that gets them in stock runs out right away. Got 4 recently for my team through their website. That's the best bet so far.

This monitor must be a beast because all I keep hearing are rave reviews!

Edit: Apparently the monitor will be up for sale in the NA on March 23rd on Benq's website.
