You'll not go far wrong with the Gigabyte, plus they've one of the best RMA services in the UK if you do :p

It's a good deal that Gigabyte one, but there is also the 7870 XT at £199.99 for another option again :p but no free game, and it's £20 more than what you originally decided on too.

Is additional cooling recommended, I mean is it ok not buy a cooling system and just use the stock fans you get with your mobo/case if you don't plan on overclocking?

It's fine, although overclocking is so easy now it is worth getting a good CPU cooler and making full use of your chip if you have one that can do it.

I wouldn't buy a GPU with the stock single fan big faceplate cooler on it. You need dual fan DirectCU2 or triple fan GPU configs or simply mod a fan in like the Arctic Accelero Pro (best aftermarket GPU fan I've ever had).

I just wanted to thank everyone in this thread, especially the OP. I built a new PC three weeks ago by following the Excellent build more or less and I am loving it.

Don't think I will bother with a fan for my GPU.

I'm annoyed by my stock-cooler, because it's too loud. If that isn't a problem for you, you should be fine.

---

Also, I can't decrease the RPM of my stock-cooler with the Speedfan tool. It only shows the fan of my Radeon 5570HD and it's the only fan I can modify. I looked also into the BIOS for the stock cooler and it says it is at ~1500 RPM.

Yep, although you should make sure ambient temps in your case aren't too hot as some of the stock fans plastic casing warps and causes it to hit the fans sometimes. Something to keep an eye on. Not really an issue with the Accelero Pro but always take notice of thing with your new big investment :)

How would the XT perform against the Gigabyte?

There does seem to be a Vapor X variant of the Sapphire 7950 for £225 available.

http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/12781961/art/sapphire-technology/radeon-hd-7950-vapor-x-3.html

It does come down to cost at the end of the day and I'm sure I'll be more than happy with the 7870, but I'm happy to pay that bit more if there's a significant leap in performance and it can be done without making wholesale changes to the build.

Pixmania can be very hit and miss with their customer service, but that is a good deal all being said.

The XT is basically a 7950 minus a few shaders (and a narrower memory bus with less VRAM), much like how the 560 Ti 448 was a 570 missing a few.

Purely between the 7950 and 7870 it's roughly this difference http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/548?vs=645

All the AMD cards from the 7850 up are pretty good, you'll not be disappointed with any.

Dabs.com are still doing the 7950 with the three free games (Far Cry 3, Sleeping Dogs and Hitman Absolution) http://www.dabs.com/products/gigaby...rce=td&utm_medium=affiliates&utm_content=TB00

I know I'm not being very helpful by showing you so many options but there is just so much choice :p

Well, yes and no. :p

If it's as easy as slapping it into that current build then I'll probably opt for the 7950, ideally. It will be nearer to the end of the month when I'll be doing the build and that deal on the 7950 runs until the 31st, so I'll see how I'm set later in the month as to which card I do eventually go with. Narrowing it down helps, at least.

First "official" mention of AMD's new graphics cards, folks:

The Verge said:
It's configurable with a choice of Core i7 Extreme processors, either dual GeForce GTX660 or AMD Radeon HD 8950 graphics cards, and up to 16GB of DDR3 RAM.

(link, and also on Engadget and some other sites)

The system in question, the Lenovo Erazer X700, doesn't come out till June, though, so we may still have a few months to wait yet.

Why do almost all pre built gaming systems look like crap, cost way too much and have shitty specs? Up to dual 660s lol.

I'm in. Miss doing the work. That used to be my August. Go work at a computer store in my home town, would get paid in parts. But the owner got sick and closed the place.

They need PCs in winnipeg. How else are you going to heat your house?

EDIT: Maybe we should franchise? Build for GAF by GAF with regional reps
Yeah, often thought about having a GAF-ready Prodigy that competes with the Alienware X51. Hard to do though, some people just don't get the value of 4.4GHz i5 vs. stock i5.

Just noticed the Fractal Design Node 304 has made its way to the US.

Going to be a long wait for Haswell especially for ITX boards.

Pretty excited about the fact that Haswell will have VRM on die. Means that you will be able to OC like crazy without needing a ridiculous power delivery design on the mobo. This, of course, means being able to grab ITX boards without any of the drawbacks.

Not strictly a PC-related question, but does anyone have a recommendation for a wireless router?

I'm using a DLink DIR-655 which has suddenly started just "disappearing". All the wireless devices will drop connection to it, and it disappears from any scans of wireless networks. The router has to be power cycled to make it reappear. I've used this router for well over a year without issue, but this has now happened 3 times in the past 36 hours.

I'd suspect my new computer has something to do with it, but I have no idea what it could possibly do to cause that...

Hi All,

Thanks for all your help the past few weeks. I finished my build and everything seems to be working great. I will work on overclocking it in a week or two, but it is great to finally have it done.

Here it is:

Why did you get such a small case? Looks really crammed.

Just won a 7770 over at Overclock3D! :D This was the competition and this was my entry

CPU - Intel Pentium G860 3.00GHz for £47.94 (web only price)

Motherboard - GIGABYTE GA-B75M-D3H Intel B75 (Socket 1155) Micro-ATX Motherboard for £55.80

RAM - 8GB ( 2x4GB ) G.SKILL Sniper LV 1600MHz CL9 DDR3 for £37.19

Hard Drive - 500GB Seagate Barracuda ST500DM002 3.5" SATA III Hard Drive for £35.94 and Mushkin Chronos 120GB 2.5" SATA-III Solid State Hard Drive for £83.94

PSU - 520W Seasonic M12II-520 80PLUS Bronze Modular Power Supply for £61.19

CPU Cooler - Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 PRO Rev.2 Quiet CPU Cooler for £15.94

Total - £375.14 (excl. delivery)

Delighted! :D Obviously it's no 7970 or anything but I'd been toying with a budget PC build and it looks like I might go for it now.

Thought I'd try to be clever and pick a budget build to match the 7770 rather than go for some sort of crazy high end build with 3570Ks in them, and it worked :D
