Just wondering,
Would I be able to SLI 2-3 GTX Titans on my ASUS P8Z77-V LK or would I need to upgrade my motherboard?
I'm planning on a massive upgrade around November/December and decide to go 2 or possibly 3 GTX Titans.
You can do 2 titans on that board but will have to upgrade for 3 titans.

Thanks for the quick replies!

I guess I will just wait for the ivybridge-e and upgrade my motherboard then. Hopefully I can save up extra to also get a new case.

Not sure why you'd get 3 titans, you would need atleast a 5ghz Haswell to get out of the CPU bottleneck in games

Since I'm always super nervous about this kind of thing, I want to get double-ultra-mega confirmation that the parts I'm planning to buy will actually work together, and that I haven't missed anything obvious.

The case I have selected came recommended from... somewhere. I thought it was this thread but it's not in the small form factor build thing in the OP, and so I can't recall where I got the idea for using that one from. I'm certainly open to alternatives, especially since others are cheaper, even factoring in the PSU. And it's pretty ugly, I have to admit. The selection of mini-ITX is not 100% essential, but I really am attracted to the idea of having a small PC.

Thanks in advance.
Booooooooooo, shoulda gotten 4670K. The SG08 is a good case, so is SG09, then I think there's revisions on those as well? Too many SKUs...
I want to give a major shout out to this thread and Neogaf as a whole. I just got done building my first custom rig ever. It is also my first high performance PC. Without this thread I don't think I would have been able to do that. I can finally PC game now!

Here is the list of components for whoever is interested.
Nice :D
Can't believe I missed that 4670k deal yesterday! How often does it go on sale at newegg?
Never. Amazon has had it $20 off sometimes though.
man running everything at 60fps feels good :D
120 is better.
Has anyone used meetup.com or something similar to find LAN parties?
Only went to PDX.
WD Black are faster and have 5 vs 2 year warranty. For video / photo editing, the faster the better, and thus, WD Black.
Loud though.
I'm looking into buying a new PC. GAF helped me build one yrs ago, and it has served me well. However, Rome 2 is coming out next month, and my PC could barely run the larger battles in Shogun 2. Being PC-building illiterate, I appeal to GAF once again!

I'm looking into maybe 1TB hard drive, and a 250gig SSD for Steam.
In terms of sound card = any particular one good for listening to music? especially classical music?

Will run W7Home 64bit most likely.
Might be looking to upgrade to a mechanical keyboard.

Anyone want to help out a hardware-illiterate GAFer? It'd have to be through the http://www.ncix.com/ website since I'd have them assemble the PC for me as well.
Extreme with a GTX 770 4GB and Gene IV would be a solid choice.
DGX is good, onboard might even be good enough.

I did say 2-3, so it's not like I was dead set on buying 3. Still planning everything as of now. Lol. My main issue is probably going to be the cooling. My budget is around 6-6.5k or so, so I'm going to be asking a lot of questions in the future. Hope you guys don't mind. :p

ERMYGERD!

Thanks for this. My PC decided to die fridaynight, so your advice was taken into account sooner than anticipated. I only had to scale the CPU down to 3.1GHz for financial reasons. I like my new config, been rocking Saint's Row 3 in Ultra-settings yesterday!
So thanks again, your advice made it possible to quickly order the new parts.

OK, I have a question about laptop/ netbook RAM. I have a crappy little Acer Aspire One D270-1895, the system has Windows 7 Starter pre-installed and only 1GB of RAM. From what I understand, I can upgrade this to 2GB on windows 7 Starter (or 4GB on Windows 7 Home).

I was wondering if RAM like this would be an acceptable upgrade?:

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148490

Eh I never did get an answer for this, but it doesn't matter, I just picked up the RAM above so I guess I will see if it works or not if it arrives.

But I have another question. I am looking for a second LCD monitor, preferably under $150.00, so I was wondering if anyone could tell me if something like this is a good deal? :

http://www.amazon.ca/dp/B005BZNDOO/

Amazon marks this as a 2ms refresh rate, but it should actually be 5ms. Any other suggestions on monitors around this price range?

Yes and good for price (Educated guess on monitor). Too many SKUs to keep track of.

Guys,

I'm going to start testing out my PC to see why frames over 60/ under 60 look horrendous.

Like a slideshow, but no frame drops, so I'm going to do a clean install.

Now, I have a drive from a broken laptop that I can completely format and install Windows 7 on it.

Can I simply swap out this hardrive that I'm using right now that has Windows 8 on it, and swap it with the Windows 7 one?

What is the correct procedure for this?

my system runs hot man

680 sli and i5 3570k

not sure whats even wrong

Like its okay as it is, but I'd have trouble overclocking due to high idle temps

Idle is pretty random with my cpu. If I'm lucky I'll sit around 36 c, but I'd save the average is 44c. I haven't tried reapplying my h80i cooler. That may be the next step.

I bought an extra exhaust fan for the front of my Define R4 yesterday and it did virtually nothing for the temps.

The Gpu's aren't much better on gpu heavy games. My primary card can get up to the low 80's depending on the game unless I go full bore on the fan speed.

idkwtf to do

I have my h80 i cooler in the back bringing cool air in, two exhausting fans in the front, and an exhaust fan at the very top.

feels bad man

Load temps for CPU?

Load low 80s sli 680 inside R4 doesn't seem too bad.

cpu load isn't terrible but sometimes it can hit low 70's without max fans

I can hit high 80's on the gpu's on occasion as well

I mean with max fan speed I can keep things down below 70 and 80 at load between cpu and gpu respectively but that's with maxing out the fan speeds and without an overclock.

I'd probably idle at 50c cpu with an overclock and I don't know about loads.

I don't know if I installed the h80i cooler correctly or not. It was like pulling teeth in regards to having to press down with such an intense pressure while forcing in the screws to keep it in place. I have a feeling it wasn't supposed to be that tough to put it on. Visually it looks perfectly placed...but these temps doe.

Looks fine, but change the graphics card to a non reference design. http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=84358&vpn=N770 TF 2GD5/OC&manufacture=MSI&promoid=1300
http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=84735&vpn=02G-P4-2774-KR&manufacture=eVGA
http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=84048&vpn=GV-N770OC-2GD&manufacture=Gigabyte

Any of these will do. I personally have the Gigabyte.

Also PSU is overkill, http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=76943&vpn=SSR-650RM&manufacture=Seasonic Electronics This will be more than enough. 550W version would have been enough, but it seems to be out of stock.

8GB is more than enough for gaming.

You can bring the Noctua down to a CM Hyper 212 Evo. Save some money.

Good lord that NCIX site is terrible. I can't click on any of your links because it forces me to the US home page. Their web designer should be in jail for criminal incompetence.

Been trying to OC my 3770K today very unsuccessfully. It'll boot up fine at 4.5ghz (been trying with 1.3 V) but a few minutes in I BSOD.

From the one error code I received, 0X50 it seems to be an issue with my RAM timings.

I'm running the G.Skill Ripjaws X DDR3-1600 and I had it set to the timings on their site of 10-10-10-30 with an SPD Voltage of 1.50v. Not sure what else to adjust to make it more stable.

Any suggestions on how to make this stable?

MicroATX in a Full Tower case?

That's like throwing a hot dog down a hallway.

Haha, whoops. I didn't even realize that. Oh well.. that won't harm anything, right? It just means it will look super tiny in there. I'm not going to be showing it off or anything so I don't mind.

As I go to select my ram, I'm curious how recommended going low-profile may be. It'll be with an as-of-yet undecided ATX motherboard (likely a Gigabyte z87 of some sort) with a Hyper 212 EVO cooler, a GTX 770 card, and a spacious NZXT Phantom case (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811146066)

Will I likely have enough space to not get any headaches going with whatever ram, or should I still veer low profile to make sure that adding/removing modules won't be troublesome?

Just get low profile when using with big heatsinks. The vengeance RAM with the tall fins offer nothing over the low profile stuff.

Comics, serious business!
Just starting to experiment with overclocking my GTX 770.

Anyone else OC'd a 770? I bumped it up by 20 mhz so far. Added a few frames in Heaven. Temps escalated quite fast.

Tracking my 3 day package like a fiend and then discover it has been delayed a day. WTF?!?

I didn't pay extra for 4 day shipping!!! Damn you UPS!!!!

Anybody had experience with getting a refund from Newegg when this happens?

Question PC gamer GAF:

I want to do a clean install of Windows 7 on a new hard drive (yes, yes I know... SSDs are awesome, but I don't want one now. I will build a entirely new gaming rig early next year that will sport an SSD). Is there anything I have to do to "unlock" the drive my current Windows installation resides on?

I remember doing a clean install of the OS to another HD once before (5+ years ago) and I remember it was a pain to get the data from the old drive.

Any advice?

No. Nothing you need to Unlock.

But you need to reinstall programs. You can't just copy them over.

Update: I've got it running like this now:

3.5 OC to 4.4 Ghz
Voltage 1.285 (I get BSOD at 1.27, and prime crashes at 1.28)
CPU Temps (according to RealTemp max): 74, 82, 86, 79 - running Prime95 for 15 minutes

I'll be running a burnin tonight before I go to bed, but both 10 and 15 minutes have been stable at these settings.

I was wondering, CPU-Z shows my Core Voltage up to 1.296 when running Prime95. Should I be concerned about that at all?

My MSI Gamer runs at 1215 and at 76c. what are your normal speeds like? I haven't had a game yet where I needed the extra fps. Running Metro LL right now on my stock 3570K with most of the settings turned fairly high and it's been a great experience.

Anyone OCing GPU boost cards should consider flashing. Its very safe and helps alot. Raising the power limits and gets rid of fluctuating clocks.
