Just woke up a few hours ago and did some research, seems like 4.2/4.3 is my only option on the Haswell now. Seriously disappointed in Haswell but I just put it at 4.2GHz and I'm running Prime Blend now. Seems to be within my personally acceptable ranges so far, only 6 hours in though. No huge marked performance improvements and shitty to OC, why does Haswell even exist?

And why is there such a jerk pic fetish? Or is it a, "not true without pics" situation. If so, you can believe whatever you want. I'm just here to ask for help and help others, and pics aren't necessary 99% of that time. So I'm not here to "prove myself with pics", if you want that go to the Show off your Setup thread and drool a bit. If you don't believe me, fine, move along.

I probably will post a truck load of jerk pic when I get this Haswell situation under control, just to see the responses.

4 titans = $4,000 worth of GPUs. This would put your PC in the top 0.5% of setups. On top of the water loop and Haswell clock claim. So that's a pretty high end exotic setup and most of the time, in a PC build thread, people want to see pics of a setup like this. And usually the builder is happy to do so.

Oh man, I replied to that guy saying he would have to play on med/low. Thought I saw 3220 and a 650. Should probably have double checked.
Haha, yeah I saw that when I was reading through! There was another build a few posts up with that spec so I knew you'd probably just mixed them up :)

Hm i can only find the 7.1 in amazon. you sure it will work with pc?

Sorry to ask for clarification because i am reading it will only work partially on the pc

it works with PC but it's not really 7.1... that's just Sony running some software hacky version of surround on the PS3. On PC, you don't get that, just stereo. You also don't get to use the mic volume slider for whatever reason, which doesn't really bother me as it's kind of a "set it and forget" kind of setting to me.

So, I think I overclocked?

I really don't understand what I'm doing so I think I'm just gonna put everything back and try to learn more.

well you don't have regular water cooling, but water chilling. Which is very awesome if you want liquid temperatures beneath ambient, but it does have a strict limit before it gets overwhelmed and temps start rising quickly.

your Koolance unit can cool 800W of heat, which should be plenty for just a CPU but not enough if you watercool those triple 780s as well ... are they watercooled ?

can't you view the liquid temp on that unit ? if it clearly spikes when you're getting high CPU temperatures then the chiller is probably overloaded

No I'm only cooling the very top GPU, the other two are own their own. :p But I got the ACX fan versions so they should be fine.

There are no 4 Titans, dude, I've yet to buy the 4th one. I've clearly explained that in earlier posts. And it's just the Koolance Liquid Chiller, and I've already dropped the Haswell down to 4.2GHz. Until I do more research on the safest deliddling method. And honestly, with the mood I'm in I could give a fuck what people want to see and I can't be arsed to open my cases, snap a few stupid pics just to appease a bunch of GAF nerds. Maybe when I'm in a better mood or whatnot, but what the fuck do I gain by doing it?

Okay, I've got the itch now, no point fighting it. Thinking about cancelling this NH-14S order and giving my computer a bath.

Where do you even start with watercooling? Had a quick look at the major enthusiast suppliers (UK) and I barely recognized any brand names. Need to cool a socket 1150 and 670 inside a Bitfenix Prodigy. Watched a video by LinusTechTips, and everything seemed to fit very snug, but definitely doable.

I'm guessing the main components are 2 blocks, 2 rads, a pump and reservoir? Plus a bunch of other little things like tubing and fitting? Any products/brands hit a particularly good price performance sweet spot?

What does delidding actually do? Lower CPU temps?

Higher clock at a given temperature or lower temperature at a given clock.

...I could give a fuck what people want to see and I can't be arsed to open my cases, snap a few stupid pics just to appease a bunch of GAF nerds. Maybe when I'm in a better mood or whatnot, but what the fuck do I gain by doing it?

Great attitude you have there. You came to this thread, not the other way around.

Intel used to Solder the IHS to the die. Solder has several times more thermal conductivity (W/M-K) than thermal paste.

This process cost them more money so after Sandy Bridge they stopped doing it.

So when you delid and replace their Thermal Paste with something like the Cool Labs stuff you end up with much more heat actually getting to the IHS and eventually your cooling solution.

You can delid and do direct die contact but you have to either get a custom made kit or machine down the bolts to your heatsink a bit to get it lower.

Important to remember that your warranty is VOIDED by doing this.

This video was a pretty good overview of the process and all the considerations.

Obviously an overkill build but i thought it was a good watch.

I would ban your ass so hard for this attitude, especially considering your posting in one of the best threads on GAF where people are really helpful and nice to each other.

So I cleaned the CPU, did the pea TM smushed under a heat sink thing and tried again but the same thing keeps happening, I start the computer and nothing is n the screen, it goes on for ten seconds and then switches off for 5 seconds then restarts.

Any ideas?

If it means anything, all the fans are working and some blue light lights up under the words "CPU phase".

Now that I think of it, couldn't there be more lights lighting up like this as a warning or something?
I'll try one last time and tell you my findings...

Hold me

I knew it would be big, but god damn the difference is insane. What on earth was intel thinking using that TIM? These chips aren't cheap, how much extra would it have cost to just solder it?

4770k @ 4.6GHz 1.27v (room temperature 26.2c, H60 cooler)

Before: idle 44c-47c | load 95c-100c (Prime95, was getting throttled on core 1)
After: idle 28c-32c | load 65c-72c (Prime95)

Used Liquid Ultra on the core and PK-3 on the IHS.
Yes, since the thermal paste inside particular CPUs is applied poorly and/or low quality.
It's actually not the TIM, it's the huge gap the TIM has to fill. For whatever reason the gap between the IHS and the die is massive and causes this, so cutting away the black rubber which raises it, or reapplying a better paste does wonders.

Nope, nothing, but looking under the CPU PHASE writing I can see the words LED 1/2/3/4 under each light, don't think that means much but just in case...

I'm running a Q6600 with 4gb ddr2.

My video card is a 9400 GT 1gb. Believe it or not games still run on this thing, albeit with the worst settings.

Was thinking about getting a Radeon 7950, and another 4 gigs of ram.

How many more years of gaming could I squeeze out of that?

Hah, was just watching that video before his ITX one. What a build.

Just been going through some UK watercooling specialist stores. As expected, the price of stuff varies wildly, so it's a bit of a laborious process of googling items to see where they stand on performance etc. Annoying thing is, there aren't many immediately recognisable metrics with this stuff.

So far seems doable to keep everything under £200.

Yeah, whatever man, one has nothing to do with the other.

Sorry if I snapped a bit at you, hadn't taken my "morning" Xanax yet. But if pics are the end all be all to getting helped or helping others in this thread....why not demand everybody post pics? Why is it targeted at me, because I have high dollar parts? And no, I'm not obligated to post a pic of anything on the internet.

Guess I should be thankful you're not a mod then... People can have a bad moment or two chief, it's a part of life, I'm currently dealing with a lot of shit today IRL. So please excuse my "attitude". Apologies, apologies.

Just put mine together. My 3770k is fine up to 4.2 ghz at 1.18 volts, hitting about 65 in OCCT or 73 with Prime 95. Higher frequencies require significantly more voltage, though; I have to go to 1.22 for 4.3 and 1.24 for 4.4. Going to try to de-lid once I find a vice to borrow.

Have people actually measured the supposed gap with calipers?

None.

Probably a couple. But you are going to get pretty limited by your processor. I had a q6600 with a 6850 that got upgraded to a 670. And while I saw a decent increase in performance, it was blown away when I went to a 2550k. My best advice is to find a used 2500k or 3570k and stick with that for a few years.

That said, it all depends what games you play and what performance you expect. You might be fine for a while longer.

kennah is right.

I recently moved from a E6600 (so even worse than Q6600) machine (8GB DDR2, ordinary HDDs, etc.) to i5 4670K, Samsung 840 Pro SSD, ....
Result = MIND BLOWN.
Such a huge upgrade. If you have the money, definitely do an upgrade. It's worth it.

7950 for $239.99 after savings and rebate. Is that as good of a deal as the 46% savings is making it out to be?

Would it be better than a 660ti or a 760? I've had more luck with Nvidia cards... (until now) so I'm wondering which way to go here for about $250.

edit: After reading around a bit it seems the 760 @ $250 is a better buy than the 7950 @ $240.

You don't get it. Nobody demands people post pics and you're not obligated to. People voluntarily post pics to show pride in their accomplishment, as a way to say thanks for the help, and to help others out by clearly showing what they've done with their set ups.

This is a place where people are friendly towards one another and go out of their way to help others. If you want to sit there at home and rage at friendly people like a loser, go ahead. It's up to you how you want to live your life.

Ah, that's what I was afraid of. Looks like I'm in store for a new PC (and a lighter wallet).

Maybe I'll wait till October and see what the new Radeon offerings are like.

Here's the rundown, for me personally at least.

There are reasons and necessities for posting a pic/s. None of my issues required a pic, it was just that some people were like "we don't believe you, post pics, you came here" kinds of bs. When I have a issue that requires a pic to properly explain or understand, I'll happily do so. Until then, I have no reason to. Has nothing to do with helping others, or showing pride in my accomplishments (I can be perfectly proud without a pic on the internet). If people don't want to believe this or that, their free to do that, as I've clearly demonstrated I don't care if people believe whatever.

And again, has nothing to do with discussions, help, or helping others to post pics that have no reason to be posted. Other than, "I just wanna see". If that makes me a asshole, then I don't know what to tell you. Nobody should be treated like they must post pics (which I clearly was being treated in a thread that is so friendly) to participate in a thread, get help, help others, otherwise everybody ought to be vetted for parts.

The fact that we are not likely to see 20nm on the new AMD chips leads me to wonder just how much better they will be than the current gen.

Die sizes on the 7k series are already massive and without a process shrink I am not too hopeful for you AMD guys on this next gen. Totally plausible they will be more inline with Nvidia but that means team green will have saturated the market by the time they actually hit shelves.

Could be wrong though.

Yeah someone did that and also replaced the TIM as well as wedged it with Noctua paste at the same height with similar results.

Speaking of pastes I see many people prefer one or the other, and there are quantitative tests for backing up some, by why do manufacturers not list basic information about their pastes like say Thermal Conductivity(w/m-K).

Any real benefit to ACX vs Windforce vs "standard" or whatever? It seems like the cards w/ fans on them would just blow the additional heat into your case. Not sure if it's a big deal or not.

Yes all the high end coolers do that. The card does stay cooler though provided you have enough CFM.

The ACX motors/blades are very quiet compared to blowers.

FUCK, somehow bought the wrong RAM

Bought this one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0079NRZHC/

Was supposed to get this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B007OTFE24/

Should I send it back and get the right one?
Same shit

Card runs cooler, case temps might be a tad higher. I'll take a quieter and cooler card any day.

Hey PC GAF I need your help. I recently picked up a Gigabyte AMD Radeon HD 7950 3GB GDDR5 I went to install it in my current rig [I am in the process of upgrading it ] and it appears my current power supply [a corsair 750w] is missing the 8 pin connector that this card apherently requires. I do have a 6 pin PCI-E connector, but I guess this needs both the 6 and the 8?
Regardless can someone please point me to a power supply that is at least 750w that will have both the GPU power connectors I need and that will work with my current mobo.

You should have a 6+2 PCI-E power connection on your current PSU.
If not you can get a 2x 6 Pin PCI-E to 8 pin PCI-E and use Molex to 6 pin PCI-E

e.g.:

OH! you are correct! I do have those on the current power supply! Thanks very much for pointing that out.
Does it matter how I plug the 6+2 into the 8 pin connection?

Thank you again

You will see that the connector is keyed and will only let you plug it in 1 way.

Look at the retention clip on the video card 8 pin receptacle and see that it is centered.

Put the 2 pin on the side of the 6 that centers the mating clip on the plug.
