Don't count on a green drive being less noisy than other drives.
Not only is the sound of a spun up modern HDD barely noticeable, but fucking HDD manufacturers love putting AAM and APM in HDD's.
What they do is spin the drive down when it is not in use (at least that is what they claim, when in fact they will often spin down at stupid times) and have to spin up again when you want to use them, often making a very loud sound and sometimes taking so long as to have Windows time out the drive when coming back from sleep mode!
Oh, really? Thanks for telling me that! So what kind of HDD is preferred then, if we'd stick to WD?

Went to add this to the OP, but I forgot I'm like 10 characters from the post limit. Need to trim some more stuff I guess.

Win 8,1 mouse lag:
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=700885

I noticed today that my PC is louder. Went to check the temperatures and I think that they are higher than what is supposed. Is there any reports of Windows 8.1 making this happen? They are 44-50ºc
Is it hotter in your room now than before? Also haven't heard. I usually fix my fan profiles so instead of a 40%------------>100% slope, I have fixed 25%_________|50%__________|80%.
Oh, really? Thanks for telling me that! So what kind of HDD is preferred then, if we'd stick to WD?
1TB Blue or some 2TB (non green)

I'm really bothered trying to decide this. Should I upgrade now from:

6870 + AMD X4 955 to R9 280X + 4670K

(I have 8GB of system ram)

Or wait until Q2 2014? I'm dying to play BF4 at a decent framerate + high settings but I'm willing to wait if I'd be better off in the long run.

I've had one person tell me to wait but I'd like a wider opinion to be sure.

Waiting to upgrade CPUS is pointless. Next year is just a Haswell refresh which will have minimal to no gains in gaming realistically. GPU again new ones come out every year, but they generally have a bigger step in performance. Nvidia stuff is still half a year away aand AMD just released their new stuff.

Don't play the waiting game. You'll save a little money perhaps, but whatever you do your hardware will grow old sooner or later.

Out of interest, what's the difference in write speed between the two? (unless you mean lifespan, in which case I'd be using this for a fresh install of my OS and programs that I use heavily for projects)

I mean the lifespan, but you're talking well over 10 years on the Evo even with 30GB of writes a day.

I wanted to buy a new graphics card, but I guess I'll wait again.
I was hoping the 280X would lower prices, not raise them again to 300$

Nevermind. Just going to switch to a different GPU. Anyone know anything about the R9 280X Dual-X? I don't see much about it on the internet.

So I just received that Seasonic Psu and let me tell you that thing is sexy. Once you go full modular you never go back. The cords are amazing they're like long so I can run them through the other side of the case to hide them. People were right this seriously was a steal at $69.99!!!! Thanks PC Gaffers for helping me make the right decision =D.

So I pulled the trigger and bought:
i5-4670k
Asus z87 plus mobo
8GB of GSkill RAM
2 Noctua NF-F12 fans to stick on my Corsair H60
Corsair HX750

All that replaced my AM3 mobo that had my Phenom II X3 720 on it and my old 550 Corsair VX power supply.

I took a chance and just cleaned out any AMD drivers before just installing the new motherboard, CPU and memory. And it booted up fine and Windows recognized the new hardware without any issues at all! No need for a clean install or anything.

And going from an X3 720, even an unlocked and overclocked one, to the 4670k is like night and day. Especially in Rome 2, the difference is staggering.

And the Noctua fans are incredible! I have them set up on my old H60 as push/pull and they're so incredibly quiet, yet move a nice amount of air. I'm a sucker for nice packaging and the Noctua's come in some nice little boxes with a ton of nice extras. Just super high quality.

Same with the HX750- it was so much nicer putting that together with the modular cables than my old non modular power supply. Still have to do some cable management but its already less cluttered than before.

Hey guys. Just curious as to what your opinions would be about upgrading my CPU/GPU's.

Current CPU: i7 2600k
Current GPUs: XFIRE 6970s

Do you think an upgrade would justified? I have a PS4 preordered and I'm tempted to cancel it and possibly look into upgrading some components. Thanks!

wait until next gen games start showing up before doing anything. Battlefield 4 should be a decent test. Same with AC4.

That's a very nice upgrade. What GPU do you have?

I also pulled the trigger and ordered a R9 280X Dual-X. I'm expecting a big difference from my 6870.

In July I replaced my aging 5770 for a EVGA 760 GTX. And maybe a month or 2 ago I got a Samsung 840 EVO SSD. Having never had an SSD before, thats a massive difference too.

So outside of keeping my 750GB WD Caviar Black HDD, my Storm Scout Case, my DVD drive, my Corsair H60 and my Xonar DG sound card, I've basically remade the guts of my PC in the past several months.

But its working really well now, so I consider it money well spent!

Nice, that GTX 760 should serve you pretty well.
And yeah, the stuff you kept are what you keep usually and they're still good components.

Plan on overclocking?

I don't have an SSD atm, but plan on getting one as soon as the prices are a bit lower.

I'll second that. I got the same one after folks here pointed out it was a nice one and was on sale. I installed it last night.

Just waiting for my RAM and HDD to arrive today to complete the PC (sans GPU until the nVidia sale next week).

Your 2600 should be good for a long while, especially if it is overclocked to 4.5 and beyond.

There are better GPUs out there, but your Xfiresetup is pretty powerful still. What kind of budget are you looking for an upgrade?

Right sorry about the delay, got sidetracked. As of now this is the best imo

It has actually come in at the exact same price as before. If you're needing Windows that'd take you up to your $1000 budget. Also if Microcenter deliver to you they've a good deal on the Fractal Core 3000 at $40 http://www.microcenter.com/product/383061/Core_3000_ATX_Mid_Tower_Computer_Case

They also do great CPU/motherboard deals too but they're in-store only.

It's all stuff really that you likely won't need, the Gigabyte is a fantastic board and will be more than ample.
Today is the day. Ordering everything. What should I change if anything. Wanted to get the i7 instead if you recall to future proof a bit more. Budget is around $1150-$1200 now. Still need a monitor but I'm not including that in price but if you have any recommendations for something around $200

I wonder how much longer my PC Power and Cooling 750 watt PSU from nearly 5 years ago will last. It's almost out of warranty, but still running strong. I just hope when it goes, it goes hard, and doesn't limp along for months causing phantom stability issues.

So right now I'm running a 6950 2GB and thinking it's finally time to upgrade. I'm debating between a few options, a single GTX 770 and get an Xbone, don't get the Xbone and go SLI 770s, or wait to see what the r290x is going to be like. I'm not considering a 780 as for about 200$ more the performance increase in 1080p benchmarks doesn't seem worth it. What should I do?

That's something to consider. I'm basically playing CS:GO right now. I can run it fine. I might get BF4 in the future. Based on the Beta it ran pretty well also. This could just be that itch with wanting to have new hardware components in my rig...

Basically something similar to the cost of PS4. ~$400-500.

Nothing amazing in that price range unless the 290/x is in that price range. If you can go a bit higher a 780 would be a heck of a boost.

But I don't know. If you're happy with what you got, stick with it. Unless it's too loud/consumes too much power. Either way, wait for the 290x price point and to see if nvidia does anything in response.

I'm starting to price out components to see if i'm going to go with a PS4 or upgrade my PC. Here's what i've got:

BIOSTAR Hi-Fi Z87X
i5 4670K
Samsung 840 evo 120GB

Will be replacing/supplementing Phenom II X4 840 and associated mobo/HDD. I'm trying to keep everything around the price of a PS4, and right now the above prices out around $460 on newegg. The idea is to obviously get better performance out of next gen games for now and the forseeable future, with an upgrade to my gpu (currently a gtx 660 ti) coming late next year/early 2015.

Everything look good? I keep going back and forth as to what I want to do (i've even posted in this thread about it) but I think i'm leaning more and more towards upgrading my PC, as much as I wanted to do a new from-scratch build next year. Lastly, is there a certain time I should buy? I assume components will go on sale around black friday like everything else.
