Hey guys. Slightly off topic but I thought you guys would be the best to ask.

I bought a Gigabyte Z77N-WIFI off Ebay for ££40. Apparently it normally retails for over £100. I knew it came untested and thus was under 'for parts or not working', so I knew what I was getting myself into.

When I first installed it it worked great, but I did notice that if the power is taken out of it, the system will go into an endless restart and nothing will display on screen. The TV doesn't even recognise the signal. It would fix by taking the RAM out and putting it back in. That is until the power cable or a power cut and it would go back to endless restart.

It's not the RAM as I've testing it in other machines.

Is it dead? Or is there something I can do? What is the probable issue?

Thanks a lot!

You may be seeing the positives now for getting a prebuilt, but a month down the line you may regret the chassis and PSU choice, these are the number 1 culprits for prebuilts. Also what testing? How come you need so much room to build a PC, ive built one on a bar stool before lol. Also if you want something with a smaller form factor like mATX or mITX you may struggle.

Also in my experience it's even more hassle to deal with shops when a PC goes wrong, usually issues aren't down to installation either. It's everything afterwards, such as installing old drivers, excessive drivers or motherboard software. There's always a chance of DOA, that's pretty much the only thing you negate when you buy a pre built.
They're talking about having a specific list of parts assembled for them by a shop or a GAFer. That's not unreasonable at all.

I'd update the BIOS first.

You have blown my mind apart, I never knew that. might be exactly what I need to make this easy on myself. Thank you indeed.

Once I check into all my options I will definitely be considering your services. I really appreciate the guidance here.

Hah, wow. Arken is in our GW2 guild. He once singlehandedly footed the bill for an EU member to buy a server transfer to be able to play with the rest of us. I knew he lived down here but had no idea he was into PC building. Mind blown again.

Your pictured handiwork is absolutely glorious btw.

Mkenyon is the man amongst these parts! hehehe If it was not for his advice, I would still be with air cooled PC parts!

I don't mean a prebuilt at all really, I'm talking about just having the components of my choice tested working and installed into a case, ready to go minus GPU and SSD (or getting charged for a Windows license). And I'm happy to do my own tech support and driver installs on my brand new working PC; it's the getting to that point I don't wanna deal with. You are more than welcome to consider this lazy (and really you'd be right) but it's just the state I'm in. I am sure I wouldn't feel this way except for the shitty luck I've had with the repairs/upgrades I did most recently, and they were relatively minor compared to a build from scratch. I mean I opened the case twice, and had an RMA the first and completely unavailable part the second. :P One day I'm sure I'll feel like going all in again, I just want some assurance and ease-of-acess this time around (and okay maybe some more professional cabling than I am capable of).

I'd almost prefer somewhere like tigerdirect to an individual merely for the concept that if they found a dead part they could walk 20 feet to a shelf with 10 extra to replace it rather than having to go through an RMA. maybe that's a silly thing to think about but it seems comforting

It's not silly. I'd say the only thing you'd be missing out on, which is subjectively important to me, is that you'd be overall less familiar with your system. Having someone help you with it, they can walk you through the process, explain some things to you, get you comfortable with your BIOS settings, and how to troubleshoot possible issues.

Relying on a store means you're on their time table for having things worked on. That's probably not really a big deal to most folks, but it would bug me.
That would be a good idea but I should have said before sorry. It's now going into endless restart even after taking out the ram and replacing it.
Gotcha, sorry I misunderstood. Sounds like an RMA might be in your future.

I'm not sure if that is a good or bad influence though. :P

You created a monster. Me and my wife moved into a new place and I have my game room/computer room I always wanted. I have a wire shelf racking unit with all my organizers with all my different water cooling parts. I tend to over order on stuff! I have so many misc. parts nicely stored away that I could almost do a complete new build with only having to order cpu/gpu blocks.

It is so much fun though. Expensive, if you have no control like I do and over order on parts, but well worth it when you have the end product up and running and looking great. I am toying with going acrylic, but not completely sold on it as of yet. But my next build will not be till sometime next year and I am going to try to be patient this time and not just jump onto the first thing that is released.

After nearly 2 months of putting my name on the notice list...and being late numerous times...I was FINALLY able catch and order 3 Titan Black back plates.

yaaaaaaassss

PM mkenyon and sit at his feet at the top of the mountain.
Bring whiskey as an offering.
I prefer a nice Irish single malt. Or Bourbon. Or Scotch. Or NW Craft.

Just no Canadian or Rye, really.

But c'mon now, I'm a layman with this stuff. No mountain here.

This is a weird one but any help would be apreciated.

Looking for a SSD for console use. In this case i know the console won't be able to take advantage of the SSD speed since it's through a 2.0 USB connection. The reason for choosing to use one is related to power and heat issues. i just want to put the thing on an enclosure withouth worrying about over heating and just connect it via a lone usb cable withouth the need of a power supply.

With that in mind what's a very reliable, cheap and at least 64 GB SSD? And a companion enclosure recomendation would be great. The store i will be using is Amazon.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Tiger Direct's only store is in South Florida. Perhaps you could get them to assemble the requested parts for you. Frys and Microcenter offer this as well. So do many local PC part stores.
Tiger Direct has a bunch of stores in the Orlando area too, unless you're referring to everything south of the panhandle/Jacksonville as "south Florida."

Oh.

I was under the impression there was only one left. Thanks for the clarification!

MX100 128GB is $100-110. Were you thinking cheaper? Crucial M500 is $72.00 for the 64GB. You get a lot less value at the 64GB mark.

Just got my new rig, absolutely loving it.

Question for those that have similar equipment:

Z97M mainboard
Logitech Z-5500 speaker system (that I've had for a while)

Which do you prefer for gaming, 6 channel direct or optical?

Anyone have any experience with HP's warranty with their monitors? How are they? Any better or worse than Dell's?

I'm trying to do the windows 8.1 glitch that lets you download 8.1 with an 8 key. It didn't work because it kept asking for a key, now it says it cannot connect, I tried my PC and laptop any ideas? Does anyone here have the iso, if so can they PM me it? I tried the glitch to many times and can't use the upgrade assistant anymore, all I need is an 8.1 iso

While mulling over grosvenor's motherboard question, I would like to throw my own out to you all as well:

MSI H97 PC Mate

Gigabyte H97-D3H

Has anyone had any experience with either? I am not going to be overclocking and will not be purchasing a K-series CPU. They are within $10 of each other and both appear to offer similar specs.

I figure this might be the place to ask a simple question.

I just replaced my old Radeon 6950 with an Nvidia 770 and the card is awesome except for in game video playback. All the intro movies suffer from stuttering and tearing. Has anyone else run onto that and is there a fix?

I've got 8GB with an i7 2600k.

Hey gaf I've been compared these two motherboards and would like some opinions are which you think would be the best one to get.

http://www.ncix.com/detail/asus-maximus-vii-hero-atx-5c-97029-1360.htm

http://www.ncix.com/detail/asus-z97-pro-wi-fi-ac-atx-20-97020-1013.htm

IIRC the only major difference between the two (aside from the onboard WiFi adapter in the Pro) is an extra two SATA ports on the Hero.

(So if you think the extra two SATA ports are worth an extra $20, go for it.)

I'm confused. Why don't you just install 8 then update to 8.1? It's a free update.

It's a cleaner install going straight to 8.1
I mean if frankly he might as well buy a key for 10$ off reddit instead of glitching the system lol
Also to the dude, u can just dl the iso off MS fyi

For some reason whatever monitor I use my GTX 770 is washed out it's set to limited rgb I assume I have used hacks and everything but the picture quallty doesn't come anywhere near my HD TV. The blacks and everythig just look so washed out at 1080p 2k and 4k but on tv it looks great 1080p.

Using display port and Samsung 4k monitor have reinstalled drivers multple times used hacks tried everything reset control panel tried diff color settngs mess around with monitor settings nothing seems to fix it.

I asssume windows thinks it's a HDTV and its effecting it stuck in some error.

Special thanks to mkenyon for suggesting something I honesty wouldn't have thought of, Stubo for the blueprint I followed, and whatever component of my rig it is that decided to go kaput precisely on a tax-free weekend I had no idea was going on. It was meant to be *wipes away tear*

I followed the parts list as closely as possible with their inventory... they don't carry EVGA PSUs, so I went with Corsair's bronze-cert modular 600W for $15 more, and no Fractal Design case, but got a Corsair R200 for $20 less. Was overcharged about $15 on the mobo and RAM, the CPU and cooler prices were shockingly spot on though! Between the slightly different build and no tax, it was almost a total wash buying there versus part-by-part deals online, way better than I expected.

Factor in the gas cost of going to Miami and back, I paid about $110 over the parts to have them assemble my choice of components (minus the need to buy the most expensive ones from them), do some cable-fu for me, test for all working (committed to a partial refund on labor if I can't "just plug in my GPU and SSD and boot it up") and get it into my hands two days after deciding I wanted it- on a sunday no less. That versus however long for each part to arrive, plus doing the build, then the variable chance of DOAs or any issues along the way, and this was totally worth that to me. I know that for some, that will seem like an outrageous cost, but I honestly believe there's a market for this service. I feel they should advertise it more; the labor cost is fixed no matter what or how many parts you're asking to have them install, they didn't skip a beat when I said I needed them to test boot it with their own drive and test each RAM stick individually, and they were extremely confident about the timeframe. Yet neither of the dudes I talked to had ever heard of Tigerdirect advertising, "pick your parts and we'll build it for you in 2 days."

Shops offering customizable prebuilts would have charged me 30% more, weeks of waiting time + shipping, with no more than a warranty and a nifty logo on the case to show for it. I grant you, all of this is contingent on having somewhere a comfortable distance away that's willing to do it, but it's something to consider for peeps in my situation.

That I definitely understand. I'm confident enough in my abilities to learn the nuances and do my own support after I get the thing working in my possession. Opening the case for the tiny finishing touches I'll need to do before booting up will be a good opportunity to familiarize myself with access and what differs from my old rig.

again I really appreciate the help guys. this thread was my first instinct when I realized my PC was on its last legs and I was not led astray.

Quick question about overclocking.

I decided to to actually delve into overclocking for the first time today and was able to quite easily obtain a stable frequency of 4.5ghz @ 1.22v on my 4770k. I think I've got a good chip and could probably get an even faster speed, but I'm fine with this for now and am going to quit while I'm ahead.

My question is pertaining to the cache ratio though. I left that at auto and in BIOS its saying that the cache ratio target is 3900mhz. Now I've seen some guides saying that you should set your cache ratio to the same as your core frequency, but how important is this? I'd rather not mess with it again and have to run stress tests if the performance gain would be minimal.

These settings in Nvidia control panel have no effect? What do you mean by hacks?

I used to get that message sometimes. My graphics drivers were wonky and every time I tried to update them, the PC would shut off then show that message (mines overclocked at 42x). Is there anything that might be causing your PC to shut off? Mine were nVidia drivers

Well no, I've got no idea what is causing the problem. My BIOS settings are stable cause I pass Prime95 and OCCT. Maybe the Vcore I've set is just not enough for booting (sometimes), but once running it's stable. Does this sound common?

I've read on the interwebs that the cold boot problem is a common problem in itself, but the fixing of the problem is different for every system. Damn. Where to begin, though?

Fixed or offset vcore?
If it's offset try a fixed vcore with a few extra notches and see if it holds up.
I have a feeling this is a motherboard issue, not the overclock though.

I'm building my first desktop PC in a month or two and can't wait. I'm trying to save on costs outside of the actual desktop though, so instead of getting a monitor, I'm going to use a TV I have in my bedroom. It's 32" and 1080p. I know it's bigger than most people would like a monitor to be, especially at that resolution. But I shouldn't run into any problems doing this, right? I'm going to get around to upgrading to a dual-monitor setup with more realistically sized monitors once I have some more funds. But initially I'll be fine using my TV right?

It's fine, I use a 32" TV.

Nothing wrong with tv as a monitor if the computer is primarily for gaming. Web Pages might look like crap/be hard to read. But many of us use just a tv on our computers.

Tv computer for games and media
MacBook for we browsing/work.

It's good to keep a monitor around for troubleshooting though. I'm sure you could find a free 15" LCD to keep in a closet.

Crucial has some listed at $137 on their official site.

Eh...

I don't know what to do. On one hand I should just get a 770, maybe a new CPU but not sure. On the other, I'm paranoid as to how my 660 started to overheat -- did the VRM get zapped by the board, PSU, etc? Or is it just faulty? I don't want to risk damaging a new GPU if the culprit is coming from elsewhere in my machine.

Seems like as DDR4 and other technologies are on the horizon that this is a horrible time to build/upgrade.

First don't shop there. Horrible store with horrible customer service. Second they have multiple stores just hard to find. There is one in the Chicago area and another in west palm beach that I have been to very recently.

DDR4 will have no advantage. There aren't really any big new technologies coming you always have upcoming performance boosts.

I think that motherboards should come with either A.) a starter bare bones CPU that is guaranteed to work long enough for you to upgrade BIOS and put your own processor in, or B.) a type of soldered, onboard ad hoc CPU that serves the same function. This would avoid running into any surprise compatibility issues with old BIOS revisions.

My 280x finally arrived! Games and everything run very good, but almost every text is blurry. It's the most extreme in Firefox or the Afterburner overlay. It's not that bad in games.

My last 2 cards were Nvidia's - is there some setting in the CCC I'm missing? It's really noticeable and pretty much sucks right now :/.

there was one in Pembroke Pines which would have been closer to me than the one in Kendall but the person I spoke to directed me to the Kendall store for custom services. I dunno if the other ones do it all too but it's not a bad drive for me.

I dunno what you mean by horrible store... they sell computer parts, at or below retail, that's all it is. it certainly beats the crap out of best buy. I guess I won't know about customer service unless I run into problems but the two people I spoke to were very friendly and helpful, spent a bunch of time with me but didn't try to upsell or get me to commit to variable pricing on the labor or anything like that.

was my first time setting foot in one of their stores but I've ordered stuff from them countless times without issue (so again I haven't really interacted with CS technically). but it's possible it varies by location. frys and microcenter are not a thing down here, and I get deer-in-the-headlights stares asking questions at my bb or h. h. Gregg down here, so this might be as good as it gets. will follow up if I have any negative experiences in the end.
