Generally not. If you do production work it's worth it (arguably not in some cases). For mist people the i5 is fine. Heck for most people the anniversary Pentium is more than enough.Assuming an equal OC to the 4.5 - 4.7 range on both, is there any tangible advantage to the 4790k over 4690k? Is it worth the $100? Do we expect next-gen only titles to actually make use of HT?
Didn't people say this about DDR3?
If you can, wait. Or snag a used card for cheap. New stuff before the end of the year and the 770 is basically two years old now.hey pcgaf
im looking to upgrade my 460gtx
i have a
i5-3570K cpu
Asus P8Z77-V LK mobo
8gb ram
my budget would be around 200-300 probably closer to 200
is gtx 770 my best choice?
Well no, I've got no idea what is causing the problem. My BIOS settings are stable cause I pass Prime95 and OCCT. Maybe the Vcore I've set is just not enough for booting (sometimes), but once running it's stable. Does this sound common?
I've read on the interwebs that the cold boot problem is a common problem in itself, but the fixing of the problem is different for every system. Damn. Where to begin, though?
Make a post here about it if you want specific information/opinions on it:

It's a solid monitor, not much to discuss really, it's similar to the more expensive 24" inch model too panel wise.
On mobile, otherwise would copy/paste it. But, there's a link to the win 7 ISO in the OP.Ok I don't have a Windows 7 DVD, there was none with my PC, it was pre-installed. How do I get the Windows iso so I can install it on my new PC?
Hey guys need some advice.
I recently got given an old PC from work, and I thought it would be good to turn it into a plex server.
It's currently running with a Pentium 4F at 3.00GHz. While it runs okay at <720p anything more and it'll start struggling and buffer. The CPU is maxed out at 100% at points so it's probably a good idea to get a new CPU for it, since it's an old socket 775 I figure it'll be easy to get a decent upgrade.
Is the best one I could go for a dual core 3.00Ghz? The board is a MSI 0A48 if that helps.
Reason I'm asking is I don't know if dual core is worse for transcoding than single core.
Cheers.
Looking to get a mouse today. How is the Razer DeathAdder? Slowly getting everything I need before I build a PC.
My 280x finally arrived! Games and everything run very good, but almost every text is blurry. It's the most extreme in Firefox or the Afterburner overlay. It's not that bad in games.
My last 2 cards were Nvidia's - is there some setting in the CCC I'm missing? It's really noticeable and pretty much sucks right now :/.

Ok, for this: http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4050#dl
Do I have to download all the ones under SATA RAID/AHCI ? In some cases it says install from floppy, but I have none.
Maybe itll be cheaper to buy a cheap GPU then use a video player that takes advantage of GPU acceleration.
Here is the official CPU Support List, unfortunately the Core 2 series doesnt look like its going to work and following supported CPUs are just as bad as each other.
- Celeron D Processors: 326, 331, 336, 341, 346, 351, 352, 355, 356
- Pentium 4 Processors: 506, 516, 519K
- Pentium 4 Processors With HT: 521, 524, 531, 541, 560, 570, 620, 630, 631, 640, 641, 650, 651, 661
- Pentium D Dual Core Processors: 805, 820, 915, 925
Nobody would even buy my Pentium D a few months back for £7 on eBay lol.

Pentium D 920 may work according to the tests conducted.
Hmm. So a 925 could work? Even if the load is high.
Do you think it would be worth it to slightly upgrade the motherboard to get a Pentium D 960? Any idea which MB to get?
Thanks a lot!
Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuk my external hard drive suddenly stopped working, it has a blinking white light, wtf. Just when I need it it suddenly stop responding, I reboot my PC, and now it's never showing up in Windows. Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
Just picked up the mx100, what side faces up? Fancy logo up or down. I ask because facing up the ports are reversed vs my HDD

Shit dude, I hope it works, I had that happen to me with a WD 3TB external, luckily it had nothing unique on it that wasn't on another laptop. But this is why I now have USB externals AND a Synology NAS lollololol
It's doomedCan't build my new PC.
Dont you have a USB stick?
If you dont have access to another PC, then just install the LAN drivers from the motherboard driver CD and then you can download the drivers from the internet locally.
Have a friend looking at getting a GPU upgrade. His CPU is a 2500k OC to 5.2 Ghz and his motherboard is a Z68 Extreme3 Gen3.
He's leaning towards the 290 Tri-X but he just wants the best value out of the GPU. So he can go up that high dollar wise if needed.
Should he stick with the 290 Tri-X or would it be fine to go a bit lower with a 280X?
I should have never built my own PC, this is a huge puzzle :|
I am installing my Titan, but I don't know if one PCI-E cable connected to the power supply is all that is needed? There is this other cable that reads CPU instead of PCI-E, but I don't see where it could connect. Is connecting only the PCI-E to the power supply fine?
Also, is the power supply's smaller cord supposed to be connected to the area that says CPU? That's what it said, but I just want to be sure this is fine.
Thanks
You must connect both the 6 and 8 pin PCI-E cables from the power supply to your graphics card or else it won't work.
The cpu one looks fine.
Ok thanks. On the 6-pin PCI-E cable, any idea why the cable that connects to it which itself connects to the power supply has many connectors along the wire, but they don't seem to connect anywhere?
Also on the 6-pin PCI-E and the 8-pin one, why is there another cable going out in the opposite direction? Is that left unconnected?
<noob...
Can't answer the first question. To answer the second question, You should use both connectors so you don't have to use up another modular cable just for a 6pin. Also some cables will have a 6+2 pin so it's effectively a 8pin. I hope that helps
Out of these PC's do you think it would be worth paying the extra money for future proofing or would the cheaper systems be fine for next-gen stuff?

I'll change a few things(like not a seagate hard drive) but the main parts will stay the same. What do you think?
Ok, it is time for a new PC as mine current one is about 5yrs old and I'm itching to play some of the newer games with higher settings on my 1440p monitor.
Basic Desktop Questions]
Your Current Specs:
Budget: $1700, USA
Main Use: Gaming and general usage
Monitor Resolution: 1440p
Don't have specific game requirements but want to game at 'Ultra' settings at a native 1440p for most newer titles at 60fps+
Looking to reuse any parts?:no. my current parts are all old
When will you build?:Next week or two.
Will you be overclocking?: Yes,
Also would like to add that I'm in a small space so going with a mini tower build. Ideally somewhat quiet and without a totally obnoxious glowing case.
So far I'm looking at:
CPU: i7 4770K
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Seidon 120XL
Graphics: Nvidia GTX 780 (3gb)
MB: Gigabyte GA-Z97N Mini ITX
Memory: A-data XPG V2 16GB DDR3-1866
Storage: Samsung 840 EVO 250GB
Storage2: WD Caviar Black 1TB (7200RPM)
Case: Not sure yet???
Power supply: Cooler Master VSM 650W 80+ Gold
Optical: some random DVD r/w
Windows 8.1
So, thoughts? Am I blowing it somewhere? Are there are upgrades (or downgrades) that make sense with my current requirements? The case is a big question mark for me at this point as I've never used a mini tower. However, space requirements are sort of forcing me in that direction.
I have a 6+2 and a 6, both are connected, so it's now ok on that end, but I'm wondering about how from those cables, there are others pointing out in the opposite direction. Not sure if your answer was regarding that.
You can see here, where the 6 and 6+2 connect, the same cables are also emerging back:
Sorry, I had to look up a video plus the manual for your psu because the cable connected on the left confused me. Remove the left cable I don't think that's a pcie cable and plug in the other connector from the right pci e cable to the left slot on your gpu.
edit: I added a picture from my rig

The fan on your cooler should be pushing from the right, not pulling from the left.
Hmm Ok I'll have a look again tomorrow (enough for tonight), so there should be two PCI cables connected? I have another PCI-E 6+2, so I guess I could plug that one as 6 since there's only six entries? If so that would mean two 6+2 cables, of which one has only 6 connected.
So... would Arctic Silver thermal compund lower my temps coming from a Hyper 212 evo? those Amazon reviews seem fishy to me.
Arctic silver was the thing years ago. Now what comes with the hyper 212 is just as goodSo... would Arctic Silver thermal compund lower my temps coming from a Hyper 212 evo? those Amazon reviews seem fishy to me.
Pick your case first. It will impact the rest of your parts.
figure you're gonna need to up that to a 6GB 780 for 60+Hz at 1440p. although really, waiting to see what the 800 series looks like (with talk of higher VRAM offerings) makes a lot of sense in your case.
It's more cooler, gpu and power supply that will need considering. The mobo choice is solid. Take a 4790k instead of the 4770kYeah I thought about that but figured I wanted to sketch out a performance baseline before trying to fit that performance into a case. If I have to choose different brands from the ones I listed to make it fit so be it.
