I expected a bit more score but ok...

Valley likes memory clocks
I get 77fps with my 780 at 1230/3500mhz

Thats why you buy the high end, they keep there value better and are easier to sell. I went from a 680 -> 780 and saved like 340$

Yep. If you're going to go high end you only need to pay that initial investment of the card. If you sell at the right time, you shouldn't have to spend more than a few hundred to get the next top end card.

Anybody have experience with Windows 8.1 Pro and activating?

I am getting an Error code: 0xC004C003

How do I activate my copy? It is a legit key.

Hey Gaf! Long time lurker, first time builder.

Build time is eta 2 weeks, so I'd like to get some opinions before I start ordering.

Budget: 1000€. Could go to 1100 if have to. Being in Ireland, it's usually easiest to order from the UK so ~£800.
Main Use: Gaming, Programming, Modelling
Monitor Resolution: 1080p
Will you be overclocking?: Yes

Here's what I have so far:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

* Actually a 4690k

I've been thinking about upping the CPU to the 4970k. Or could invest the money in getting a 280x instead of the 760. Uk prices are ridiculous for GPUs :(.
Anyway, grateful for any feedback. Thanks!

Building my first PC and I've pretty much got everything figured out except for data storage. I have an SSD for the OS, but I'm debating between a WD Blue and WD Green, just to throw music and videos and whatnot onto.

Is there any clear advantage to either one or is the color of the label the biggest difference?

I don't plan on overclocking my CPU, so I will probably go with the ASRock H97. How important is to have 4GB VRAM instead of 2GB? I might invest the money saved on the motherboard on a better GPU, but I want to stick with Nvidia.

Edit: I think my power supply might be a bit expensive compared to the other components, what would be a suitable less expensive one?

Most games are now going to be coded with the current gen consoles in mind so think 3gig vram as your starting point and cpu wise think cores.

Last gen consoles had sod all ram so even a 1gb vram card was ok.

This thread is great that way. Even though some of us might have preferences towards Nvidia or AMD, we don't get into wars like some of the console fanboys. It's very much like Neogaf porn threads in a way. Someone with better photo shopping skills should make the below photo say "neogaf discusses PC hardware".

B-b-but my 6300 has sexier packaging than your new Haswell~~

So, first-time builder here. Got most things figured out, except storage.
Was going to just get a 1tb 3,5 hdd, but now considering just using my old laptop hdd plus a SSD.

Choosing between a KINGSTON SSDNOW V300 120gb and the SAMSUNG EVO 840 120gb. Samsung's clearly the favorite, but at about 16$ more is it worth it(i'm poor)?
V300 is cheap, so that's nice(i'm poor). However it seems a bunch of them are slower than advertised(something about synchronous nand), something I should worry about?

And about using the laptop drive: I'm using the Cooler Master N200 case, which seems to have a horizontal 2,5 bay labeled as "ssd bay"-
Any problems putting my laptop drive there? Mostly worried about temperature and noise.

Build otherwise, did I mess something up?
CPU: i5 4670k (was slightly cheaper than the non-k version. so why not.)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-B85M-D3H Intel B85
Case: Cooler Master N200 (Minitower)
GPU: old Oc'ed GTS 450 for now; 2015, at most, a 760.
Memory: Corsair Vengeance 1600mhz 4gbx2 low profile
PSU: XFX Core 550w 80+ Bronze

I was just thinking to myself, we're probably about a year to a year and a half out from me only buying SSDs, even for external storage. I buy 1TB drives for archiving and NAS storage, and if we hit $200-some for 1TB, I could easily justify spending the extra money for the response time.

That's going to be weird.

MX100 as a SSD. Cheap and it performs well. That and you might want to get a motherboard that allows you to overclock if you go with the k.

I bought one of those cheap W7 to W8 keys from MS when 8 first launched. If I want to reinstall 8.1 what is the most efficient method of doing so?

Thanks! I heard the 770 was bad value, but it seems like it fairs a bit better in pounds.

Any reason you recommend that PSU? It saves ~£6, but isn't modular...
Yeah if you prefer nvidia it's definitely more reasonable in the uk.

The psu is a higher quality unit, the cables can be hidden behind the motherboard tray in most good cases. I've not used the one you've chosen though so it may be worth considering reviews to figure out if it makes sense for you.

It would definitely be fine in an r4.

Hey guys. I'm building a gaming PC at the end of the month (waiting for 4790k) and while I was initially planning on getting a GTX 780 Ti, I was wondering if you think it would be better to get a cheaper card for now and upgrade in 2015 when the new nvidia cards get released. If so, which one? I was looking at the GTX 770 4GB.

Not much point going for the 4GB 770 if you're planning on upgrading in a year.

R9 280X or GTX 760 are better options in terms of price if you want to upgrade again sooner rather than later. An R9 290 when overclocked will do you very, very well for quite a while.

But if you have the money for a 780 Ti right now then go for it, you can always flip it when 800 series comes out.

Hmm, looks good, but the write speed seems relatively low(150MB/s) on the 128gb version, but I guess read speed is what's best about a ssd.
Though I could get a discounted Sandisk Extreme II 120gb for almost the same price, seems a little better, anyone in the know?

Was thinking about getting a Zx7 board, but eh, the extra price of that plus an aftermarket cooler= almost up to the price of a i7-4770. Not really worth it, is it?

Alright, since I ordered my 4790k processor, here is what I am going to order for the rest of the build

I'd probably change that 290x to one with a decent cooler on it - that's a reference one which will be run hot and loud. This one is meant to be pretty good.

Ssds are all so balls fast anyway that unless you are doing server/production work the difference is not noticable. Gaming doesn't care what SSD you use. So te advice is always go with what you can find for cheaper.

And for the second question you don't need to immediately buy the cooler and it's up to you to decide if a 20-30% increase in speed is 'worth it'

Okay... SO there's been no announcement for DirectX 12 on Windows 7 other than they are looking into it. So I'm pretty much pushed to only getting windows 8.1 if I want to stay on top of they graphics?

The wait for GTX 880s is killing me. I'm also hoping the their cheaper than GTX 780ti's. What was the price point for the regular GTX780s when they were first released?

I doubt 7 will get it. It didn't get the full version of 11.1, it's not getting 11.2 either.

Go 8.1. It's a great OS.

I think the MX100 might still be better, and you won't really notice the performance difference.

Overclocking can make a pretty big difference, but yeah, it would be quite a price increase.

Finally looking at building a new pc after some years on an old model i5 (which is, amusingly, still fine for 90% of the games I play). I suspect the upgrade to a 120+hz monitor will be the most noticeable difference I'll feel out of the gate :)

Anyway, that aside, before I go into the week long research pits to brush up on the latest and greatest for my build, are there any major disruptive technologies in the next six months or so?

Major new memory types, cpus, gpus, motherboard specs, whatever?

I don't care about the usual march of clock speeds and gpu refreshes, I just want to make sure now is a (relatively) safe time to do a new ~1k pc build.

edit: I specced this out with next to no real research on current price/perf, so I'm guessing I can get it under 1k with some effort

Does anyone know a good 24" monitor with good color accuracy and low lag? Currently using a XL2420TX and while 120Hz is great, the colors are not great when I'm doing Photo/Art editing.

No Asus please since I don't like their bezel designs since they are really tacky looking.

I see that the front page has a self turn of mid towers. What are the premiums 9 bes offered these days aside from case labs and little devil? More along the lines of 'what can I get on new egg'. I know of the 700 but that's a bit it. I've only been looking at full towers this last year to get ready for my build. But I was thinking about some things Mendon told me months and months ago and finally decided to go this route since I'm not going to be an extreme enthusiast.
