That is indeed really normal temps with a Haswell CPU. Keep in mind, it's basically running at 4.4 GHz at load, so it's not some stock processor.

How's the cooling on it? Seems like airflow would be at a premium with a design like that. Nothing some high pressure fans couldn't overcome, I'm sure.
It has 2 120 mm fans at the bottom (which have more than enough space to get air from thanks to the design) and 1 140 in the top. Should be more than sufficient for any single-GPU use case, really, and the results at that German site are rather convincing.

Here's an image of the insides with installed HW from the German review:
Cooltek_UMX2_14.jpg

*edit*

Oh, I just realized where the fans are. Brilliant design. All that nice cool air straight at the GPU, where it most matters.
Yeah, it's beautiful on the inside and on the outside!

I'd also swap the case with the standard Fractal Define R4. To give you an idea of the amount of space you have in one, here's my old one with a giant 7970 DCuII in it:

mkenyon -

I have the Fractal Define R3, any idea if I could or how I could take out the unnecessary HDD racks in the front? They go all the way to the top.

Thanks for the confirmation.

Also, that's 70c using IntelBurnTest (up to 79c if the room is hotter, I'm in SoCal).

I tried out P95 small FFTs and the temps instantly went through the roof. 95c. I shut that down right away. But I've been told that P95 is a terrible test for Haswell and the results are unrealistic.

Let's hope it doesn't suck

I'm sure the 800 series are going to be very good, but I think it will be an incremental gain over the 780ti performance wise....the big difference will be in price. At least in the line of thought running over at PCPer....the 880 should be a little better than a 780ti, but only cost $450.

In almost 20 years of building PCs the only MB I ever bought which broke was also the only Gigabyte one. "Ultra durable" my ass.

Of course that's not statistically significant at all (so don't worry MoonGred), but ASRock has never failed me, and they usually have really good value as well, so these days I just stick with them.

ASRock boards are fine...if I remember right they had some issues with the Z77 boards, but that was a while ago.

Gigabyte makes great boards these days.

Can anyone give me some advice on how to determine if my CPU will end up throttling me on an upgrade? I'm currently running a 5770 with an AMD Phenom II X4 955. I'm considering upgrading the 5770 to something between a GTX 750ti and a 770. I really don't want to spend too much on a video card if my CPU is going to end up holding me back.

Finished my first build, I'm installing drivers now. I don't know why I was so nervous. It was a breeze. The only thing I had problems with was that my motherboard was giving my CPU vcores 1.35v on default. I think that was causing crashing while trying to install windows. I manually turned it down to 1.15 and it runs beautifully.

Thanks to everyone who helped me out along the way finding parts. Special mention to mkenyon. I'm glad I went with 144hz.

Lots of supposed specs on 800 cards, but late September is when the 880 is supposed to launch.

Man I really hope that's true. It's an absolute perfect time to drop for me. I would like to have my rig up before November. I see that y'all think they'll be cheaper in price. I wonder if they're going to release something higher tier later in the year like an 880 Ti or something. The past two releases on their GPUs the Ti came later right? Either way if a 450 GPU is more powerful than a 780 Ti I'll take it and save $300.

I said that on the last page....let me just reinforce that it is just something that is going around the rumor mill at this point. Specifically, it was discussed on last weeks PCPer podcast....that the performance gains will be moderate, but the pricing will bring them more into line with what AMD is offering. None of this is confirmed.

I hope it is true....they need to compete better on price/performance. Some people are going to be disappointed that there is not the process shrink coming that many expected...I guess they can just reset their calendars and start the wait for the 900 series.

Never mind, I'm blue screening every 5 minutes or so. Didn't go off without a hitch. I updated my bios to the latest version. Not sure what exactly is going on.

Edit: It seems to be when I'm installing my Nvidia drivers for my 780. If that could even be a possible reason.

Yeah, nothing is fact right now so we'll just have to wait. I'll probably just get an 880 and then 2-3 years down the line upgrade.

Was at Micro Center tonight and stumbled upon these...

The cashier called his manager over to double check the prices. Granted, I know these aren't the newest boards, but I'm still going to make some damn good builds.

Oh, and there are no missing parts.

Nice! Those are great boards.

Thinking of getting the NZXT H440. Really like the look of it, and the reviews look positive and it's in my price range.

Anybody here have that case?

I've built in one, and it's fantastic. I think I prefer the Phanteks Enthoo Pro and Air 540 a bit more at that price range, but that's splitting hairs. If those are 8/10s, then the H440 is a 7.9/10.

And that's on a real 10 scale. Not like "Gaming Journalism" scale. :P

Amazing pick ups. Outside of the really niche M2 SATA slots, there's no appreciable difference between the Z87 and Z97 boards.

Cool. Yeah, the Enthoo Pro is my second choice. The reason I'm leaning towards the H440 is because I just really like the looks of it, even if the features aren't quite as good as the Enthoo Pro (and that it's a bit more expensive).

insanely nice find. I have the sabertooth in my rig. I love it
So I was browsing my list of tech forums, and I found this. Figured you guys would like to see it.

What do you call those desks?

All of that money and they still use the standard $30 CPU cooler.

I actually noticed that too lol. thought that was funny but it is a poretty good fan cooler

I guess I find it odd that, for something so uncommon, it's not more expensive... unless it's just not worth the difference. Looking at this set, but it doesn't actually say explicitly that it runs at 1600 by default... I know some have to be clocked up from 1333 for whatever reason.

You might have to set the XMP profile to have it run at the specified timings, but the speed it runs at (by default) will be determined by your CPU. (My 16GB set ran at 1600 from the start on my 4770K, the 8GB set on my G3258 defaulted to 1333)

Both run at spec with the XMP profile set. It's a great set of ram and my goto because it's usually only a few euros shy of being the cheapest :D

This would be able to do it in most games, but not necessarily with high settings:

Otherwise, the "great" build in the OP is what you'd be looking at.

I've built pretty much the exact same build, hasn't had a problem with anything I've thrown at it. (Anniversary MB might be slightly cheaper though?) - Mind you, I don't play the most recent shooters (or any shooters really)

Are AoC monitors acceptable? I've never heard of them before so I'm leaning towards "avoid" but I thought I'd double check with this thread.

I don't have any specific timetables in mind but I'd like to get a 1080p, gsync (without modification), 144hz monitor. I don't want some 27" 1440p monstrosity like that ASUS ROG thing (which I'm sure is a fantastic monitor generally). 24" is probably as large as I want, esp. since I don't really want to go higher than 1080p just yet.

In theory, the specs on this AOC thing are exactly what I'm after, but I have no education on the finer points of monitors, and again, no idea of this brand is any good.

AOC are a good budget brand. Never had any problems with them

They're acceptable. After all, they'll probably use the same 144hz AUO panel as everyone else on the market does. Like most gaming monitors on the market, the default factory calibration is poor so be aware if you prefer accurate colours and gamma.

Besides that, they generally sell a good product for a far lower price than the competition. Anecdote time: I recently bought a AOC Q2770PQU for $550 and its definitely better than any Dell U2713HM I've ever seen in the wild. The anti-glare coating on PLS panels are still better than LG's matte coating on IPS panels; it has very little monitor glow for some reason; has no overshoot artifacts so it renders motion quite well for a 60hz monitor. Added bonuses include a (really surprising) 1 pixel fault tolerance and an accessories bundle that included every single cable that could possible be used with the monitor. The only flaw I can think of is that its aesthetically challenged.

Im looking at buying a headset solely for Teamspeak comms on the PC, do the bluetooth Plantronics headsets work with PC onboard bluetooth such as the one on my Asus P8Z77-i Deluxe board?

Ive seen a Plantronics Voyager HD refurb for £25 on eBay, seems like a bargain?

Anyone know the range of these devices? Need like 8 feet.

I'm looking to upgrade my HD7850 to a GTX770.

Is there anything I need to be wary of? I mean, any issues regarding conflicting drivers from two manufacturers, or should I be in the clear by simply removing my current AMD drivers and then installing the nVidia card?

Yup. Out with the old in with the new.

Hey how is Newegg Premiere? I saw they offer a 30 day free-trial. Worth doing a free trial when I order my parts next month?

I'd prefer Amazon prime (and I do in fact subscribe to Amazon prime). Much more versatile. I just don't upgrade PC components enough to warrant an extra $50/yr cost.

Historically Newegg has shipped ridiculously quick for me anyways with their NJ depot. They kinda hurt themselves being that efficient. On the flip side, Amazon basic shipping was slow as molasses making prime that much more appealing.

I guess it would depend on how good their exclusive sales are and stuff.

I'd certainly try the free trial when you build a new machine if you want to check it out. Nothing wrong with that. That's how I got hooked on Prime. I had just bought a house and needed all sorts of stuff. Abused the heck out of the 2 day shipping for a month then decided to keep it.

I mean it's free. Do the trial for ordering any parts/periphery and then cancel it. I just did this myself.

Amazon Prime kicks the shit out of it if you're considering a premium online retail service.

TMK, you can't split out the audio for just comms like PS4/Xbox, or am I totally wrong here?

If clear communication is a priority, I'd avoid anything bluetooth.

I use it for my business as they carry a bunch of stuff you can't get on Amazon, like toner cartidges for super old printers.

It works pretty well. I also prefer Prime for my personal use.
What's considered a good ranking in 3D Mark? I got something like 8848?
It's all dependent upon the setup. "Good" is a pretty nebulous thing, because in the world of benchmarking, you're up against the likes of 4 Titans.

Only for PC gaming - talking to friends, doesnt has to be amazing audio quality, but better than Xbox mic atleast. Need it wireless as I play in the lounge on a TV.

I thought i could have the Plantronics Headset provide voice and mic, and have my normal speakers for game audio? Thats how my current 360 mic works when i connect it to my PC.

never ordered from ncix before.

The product page says it's backordered, then right below that it shows stock in the warehouses. The live stock check says they have in-transit stock, and then when i add to the shopping cart it says "this product is not available" and my cart is empty. What am I doing wrong?

Gotcha, I didn't realize this was possible. Having speakers on in voice chat in our server is a bannable offense, so I've never really looked into it :P

With the hardware you have, you honestly do not need G-Sync at 1080p. It's most helpful at 30-70 FPS, and becomes mostly useless once you get up into the 90 range. At that point, the high refresh is going to make tearing essentially unnoticeable, and the illusion of motion will be much more superior.

I'd advise the BenQ XL2411Z or VG248QE.
