Just finished my new build :) Gave Metro Redux a go at 3440x1440 and was getting a solid 60 FPS. Will try overclocking the CPU tomorrow.

Full specs:

Corsair 650D case
5930k and Noctua NH-U12S
Asus X99 Deluxe
Radeon 290 Tri-X CF
GSKILL 32GB RAM
Samsung 840 Pro 256GB (OS drive)
Samsung Evo 256GB and 512GB
Corsair AX1200 PSU

3xCorsair SP120 fans (rear and top)
Bitfenix 200mm for the front

Have you tried the OC button at the bottom of the board? I'm curious to see what kind of factory OC the different X99 mobo with the little button have.

edit; wait, now I'm not sure if it is the MSI boards only.

I

The Proteus Core is f-ing phenomenal. Best mouse I've ever used. Go for it!

Damn.. I am becoming a sucker for mice. I just got the Steelseries Rival and love it. Didn't like the Raw at all, but this one has been phenomenal so far. It's replaced the Corsair M65 which I really liked too. I may have to search for this one. Did some reading and watching after you mentioned it and now you have my interest.

Nice. What's the temps of the CPU at stock speed with that cooler? And, can't wait to see what they are when overclock.

35C idle

Peaked at 50 C while playing Metro

60-62C while loading all cores to 100% in Handbrake

Ambient temps are around 78 F right now, btw. Pretty happy with the thermals.

Are the monitor recommendations in th OP still accurate ?

Looking for a new main monitor (mainly for gaming) in the 200€ price range.

144hz monitor people, have you guys tried the Acer Predator GN246HLBBID? It's a fair bit cheaper than the Asus stuff right now in the UK and am a little tempted to pick it up.

A little torn between the Fractal Design R4 and the Corsair 550D. The 550D looks to be of a higher quality. I'm looking for quiet and great cable management under $130.

Yay, my Dell U2713HM just arrived... will set it up tomorrow, and finally leave 1080p behind. In the meantime, can someone tell me, what's the point of an USB hub on a monitor?
Never saw that before!

Typically you have easier access to USB ports on a monitor vs your computer. With a monitor with ports on it you don't even need your case for anything but the power button.

This lets you do things like moving the case further away to minimize noise/vibration, or just to have more space to get comfortable. And stuffs like that.

USB ports in a display have a couple of uses. 1) Just more ports than your PC alone. 2) Connecting your peripherals to your display may be more convenient, depending on the location of your computer and number/type of USB devices required.

Can plug USB items to the hub on the monitor saving you ports on your actual motherboard.

edit: shiii beaten twice as bad

Thanks for the responses, everyone!
It's a neat feature, even though I personally won't really have an use for it. Also, since I noticed the USB hub is being run from a separate cable, will my monitor work normally if I don't plug it in?

Connecting the hub is optional.

Now I just have to find a keyboard, the Vortex/KBT Race seems hard to find in Blighty so I might have to find one's that'll either ship to the UK or a board that I can just buy here... Like the Filco MJ2
Unless you really want something more exotic the Filco is a top quality keyboard. I have the mj2 tenkeyless with browns and it feels great to type on. It's also quite heavy and sturdy with the metal backplate. I feel like I could bash someone's head in with this thing without putting a dent in it. Might come in handy at a LAN or something, you never know.

Thoughts? The H220X can be expanded, and the pump is strong enough for a dual GPU setup and the requisite radiators according to Swiftech should I decide to go that route later. I was hoping for a 280mm model but that seems to be a way off. The Swiftech H320 would be even better, but it's not supposed to be for sale in the US, and has a 3-6 week lead time from NCIX US (the only place in the US I can get it). NCIX in Canda has it in stock, but do they ship to the US? I could probably find someone who lives on the other side of the border to ship to if not (I live in Detroit).

I'm going back and forth between the MSI X99S Gaming 7 and the Asus X99-Deluxe. The Gaming 7 is significantly cheaper and has "USB Audio Power" which basically means independent powering of certain USB slots and some filtering to ensure a solid 5V connection with minimal ripple for DAC use (which I use). The Asus has the OC Socket which I would like to try out, and is the more feature rich board.

Couple of questions to which I've had trouble finding good answers on Google:

1. Is extra RAM limited by the timings and frequency of the existing pair?
2. Would adding a single stick when there's already a pair in dual channel slow the whole thing down?

1. It will perform to the slowest by default but faster timings can usually be forced.
2. Yes, but most people wouldn't notice the difference

Will any Displayport 1.2a monitor support freesync? Or do monitors also need to have a special scaler installed similar to how Gsync works?

Edit: Nevermind, I just searched and read an Anandtech article that made it clear. The standard for adaptive sync exists in 1.2a, but vendors still need to make new hardware and software solutions for it.

Thank you very much. Sorry but I have one more:

I see myself building a new mid-tier gaming system maybe 18 months from now. Is it realistic at all to think that 1600Mhz RAM (the highest supported by my current motherboard) bought now would be suitable to transfer to that?

Who knows. Depends if DDR4 hits the mainstream by then.

Ah, I didn't know that was even a thing. In that case I'll just aim for the best performance/price for my current setup and not worry about future-proofing. Thanks again.
That's all you should ever do :)

So, if you're going to be primarily gaming, is a 5820k still recommended over a 4790k?
Unless you do a lot of media encoding our high end cpu work the 4790 should be faster in games for a long time.

Considering most 5960X's are seeing 4.4-4.5 GHz (in line with the 4790k) and that the 5820K has two less cores to generate heat, it seems likely that the 5820K would be equal to if not outperform a 4790K in games that use 4 or less threads.

I figure I should ask here. I had windows 7 64 bit on my laptop and it was smoking fast. I installed windows 8.1 on my laptop (just to try it out) and didn't like it. I did a fresh install back to Windows 7 64 bit. I installed all the drivers, but now my laptop was running slow. The SSD is a samsung 840 pro 256 GB. I installed the samsung magician and did all of the SSD tweaks. It was still running slower than before. I did the benchmark and I was right, my iops are now ~20k. I suspect that it was running around the ~100k advertised iops before I tried installed Windows 8.1.

Any ideas? I tried researching and there are other reports of low IOPS. The read and write speeds are fine according to benchmarks, but the PC feels like it has a mechanical HDD again or even slower.

Hey guys, mind if I ask a tech support question here? Need help fast..

I am trying to transfer about 500gb of data from one Sata HDD to another (which I just installed W7 onto). The speeds were ok at first, about 50mb/s. After halfway through, the speeds seem to have dropped to 11mb/s. Any idea why? Very frustrating. I still have 100gb or so to go and I need it right away

Considering there's a Samsung 850 Pro, is it not better than the 840 Pro? I see people still buying the 840 with no mention of the 850. I think I'm missing something here.

I'm looking for an HTPC case that is less that 8" tall but can fit a full video card. Doesn't need hard drive bays, just going to use an SSD. Anyone know something?

Sold my 1 month old Z97 system to a mate same price I paid pretty much. I did build it so suppose he got free labour with all the receipts...

Now quietly waiting for the new nVidia cards before deciding if I go for the X99 or not

Unless you're doing disk heavy stuff it's usually just best to go with whatever is cheapest

Zaph

What would you consider heavy disk use? Fraps, gaming, anything like that?

E.g. Video editing/animation - stuff that generates massive temp files.

For the stuff you listed kennah's advice is sound. Get whichever is cheapest, with as high a capacity as you can afford.

The size of the files being copied will have an effect on the performance. Lots of small files means many more reads and writes occurring, which will be slower than, say, copying a giant 200GB file.

I'd advise going for a proper WC system over a pseudo-AIO like that. It'll be easier to work with in the long term, despite how simple that Swiftech bit of kit seems.
Your Current Specs: I got nothing.
Budget: $900 USD ($12000 MXN) + Mexico
Main Use: Light Gaming: 3, Gaming: 3, Emulation: 3, Video Editing: 1, Streaming games in HD: 1, 3D/Model work: 1, General Usage: 4.
Monitor Resolution: 1080p
List SPECIFIC games or applications that you MUST be able to run well: Fallout franchise, Dark Souls, Watch_Dogs, Call of Duty franchise, Visual Studio 2012/XNA, Unity.
Looking to reuse any parts?: Two 180GB HDD (from broken laptops).
When will you build?: No deadline.
Will you be overclocking?: No.
Go with the "Great" build in the OP, with the extra bit of money, either use it on a nicer GPU, more storage, or a 4790K.

I can't *believe* these lazy developers keep making file sizes so damn large. Btw, how does technology work?

I have a Steelseries Sensei, and it's great. A bit too slippery (which your Rival solves), but the actual tracking is great - I keep it in my messenger bag every day, for when I might want to play games on my laptop (especially handy with all the work traveling I do).

My biggest gripe with most mice is the damn tracking. It boggles my mind how many "gaming mice" just have absolutely piss-poor tracking/sensors. Pretty much every Razer mouse I've used has been garbage - I constantly "overshoot" my cursor and miss my target because of acceleration and other "features," and my mouse just generally hops too much. After a third Razer mouse in three years (ProClick -> Orochi -> DeathAdder), I swore them off forever.

I've tried Corsairs - they feel weird as heck. I've tried MadCatz - the build quality is abysmal.

I always seem to come back to Logitech. They have, IMO, the best build quality, the best comfort, best button placement, and most importantly, best tracking.

And so, with all that said, if you're happy with your SS, I don't know if the PC is going to be a huge upgrade - they're both good. But if I had to pick, I'd pick the PC every single time.

Any ETA on the next round of motherboards?

I'm looking at an extra $175 minimum for a XSPC 360mm kit (with ZMT Tubing and requisite fittings) over the H220X . Extra $250 if I pick out all the parts I want individually.

I wish EK would provide a 360mm kit with a D5 pump. That would make my life much simpler.
