The size of the files being copied will have an effect on the performance. Lots of small files means many more reads and writes occurring, which will be slower than, say, copying a giant 200GB file.

Yea I understand that, but the entire hard drive is music files. They have all been small files, so that wouldn't explain the loss in speed. It's as if the hard drive is worn out or something, is that possible?

E.g. Video editing/animation - stuff that generates massive temp files.

For the stuff you listed kennah's advice is sound. Get whichever is cheapest, with as high a capacity as you can afford.

If you have to ask, it isn't heavy disc use ;)

Databases, or regularly working with files of 30-40gigs, etc. Games all run basically the same no matter which SSD you use.

Ah, alrighty. Thanks. :)

Any ETA on the next round of motherboards?

I'm looking at an extra $175 minimum for a XSPC 360mm kit (with ZMT Tubing and requisite fittings) over the H220X . Extra $250 if I pick out all the parts I want individually.

I wish EK would provide a 360mm kit with a D5 pump. That would make my life much simpler.
Yeah, but then you'll have a large reservoir that is easy to use, a better pump, and overall higher quality parts.

I can't imagine trying to bleed a full loop with that H220X and that tiny res.

The motherboards will be trickling out over the course of this month. The X99-A already has some videos, so release is imminent. Though I absolutely despise giving this channel clicks (because the guy puts out fellacious shit just to get clicks) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QhRD82CHr-Q

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm, probably have to buy some used stuff. The base build in the OP could, no prob, but even that is $450.

That's what i figured. And to be honest, the person that asked me had originally said they wanted to keep the price around $350. They also asked about using AMD processors since it's a cheaper alternative so...yeah.

Crosspost from the Tech Support thread since this thread is more active and is suited to this stuff:
A few days ago, I received the Gigabyte Z97X motherboard and Intel Core i5 4690K I ordered from online as upgrades for my aging rig. It was running perfectly fine up until yesterday where it started locking up and my monitor would show its "DVI No Input" message before recovering and displaying "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered". The worst of it is when I'm playing games where it runs fine for 10 seconds to about a minute before it does the same thing but on recovery, the game is either frozen on the frame it crashed on or becomes completely transparent except for the mouse cursor while the sound continues to play. Normally, this is fixed by enabling HPET in the BIOS and the operating system (Windows 8.1 in this case) but in the Gigabyte UEFI DualBIOS the option to enable or disable HPET is absent (I'm assuming it's forced on now).

I think it could be the following but I don't know anything about this stuff: A) My GeForce 660 is busted; or B) My Antec Sonata from 2007's 500W power supply isn't supplying enough power.

Anyone know what it could be and/or have solutions?

Hi everyone.

I'm in the market for a new PC tower/desktop in the UK.

I'm after one pre built so only place I've known about is Overclockers, are they good and is there alternatives.

I'm a bit lost with CPU power my current one is a 2.67 dc intel so not sure what motherboard and CPU name where up to (is it Haswell).

I'm looking at £1400-£1500

Must include windows 8.1 64bit a nvidia graphics card and intel chipset (just my preference) around 1tb drive 16gig ram. Blueray RW

I'm after a really good gaming PC basically.

Monitors not needed as use a 51" 3d tv. Will need to have a dedicated sound card.

If people can help me from being ripped off to what spec is better than x and what's best CPU etc for range be appreciated.

I do suffer a neuro condition similar to MS so apologies for any bad spelling x

Oh I already have razor keyboard and mouse so basically all in one tower be fine.

Darren

It doesn't get much cheaper than a $60-70 proc.
About to build either this:

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/9wnTFT

or this:

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/Vb6MXL

Can't decide if I want to go LGA1150 or LGA2011-3. I think I'll be better off with the slower hex core in the long run, and like the idea that I'm going to be able to scale out instead of just scale up, but it's all really damn spendy.

Any thoughts?
2011-3 is the way to go, they both overclock to 4.4GHz ezpz.

However, that EVGA mATX board should be avoided for the time being. Lots of weird UEFI/BIOS quirks. I myself am waiting for more mATX X79 boards to do the same purchase.

Your A and B do sound as they are the most likely culprits. I'd also run memtest to check that.

Any recommended pump/reservoir combos? All the tall tube style reservoir combos are sold out it seems like.

Something like this would be ideal:

Edit: Looking at that PC-V7 build, a dual bay resevoir setup could work just as well it seems like.

Got all my parts, not sure if I'm gonna build it myself or pay someone to help me out.
Any suggestions for first time builder? I've watch dozen or so custom builds on YT and read through the component manuals.

My main issue is making sure all the power cables and case wires hook up at correct places. Also I'm going to be using a wireless keyboard and mouse, I do have a wired mouse, but not a wired keyboard. Is not having a wired keyboard going to be a issue during setup?

Assemble it yourself. It shouldn't take you no more than a couple hours to get everything connected. Should be pretty straight forward even for a beginner. The motherboard's manual is your friend.

Once you have everything hooked up, and you press that power button; that feels you get when it boots is so satisfying. And even if it doesn't post, then you spend some time troubleshooting it.

Good Luck!

Well Gaf,

The time has finally come. All my parts have arrived and I'm assembling my build tomorrow! Any last minute tips or words of advice for me?

This is my final build. Minus my video card, which I'll be getting once Nvidia makes their announcements in a few weeks.

You can turn any reservoir into a pump/res combo with any Male-to-Male G 1/4" fitting. Simply screw one end into the outlet, and the other end to the pump inlet.

How about an alienware rig?

Is bleeding/general maintenance easier with a tube style vs. a bay style as I suspect?
It really depends on access to the thing. If the fill port is unobstructed and easy to access, it doesn't change much either way.

HOWEVER

Combo res/pump bay devices are noticeably more noisy. For one, you can't decouple the connection between the physical thing and your chassis with sound dampening material. For two, it's partially physically outside of the case, rather than inside of the case.

Despite loving the clean look of bay reservoirs, and it is what I used on my first three water cooling builds, I've abandoned them for the internal tube style.

That's interesting. Anything that won't be fixed in a bios update?

I don't really like my other mATX options tight now.

Yeah, I'm not keen on ASRock either for high-end enthusiast stuff. Done plenty of builds with them for people, and they seem to be fine so far. I'm a bit more demanding though.

EVGA has been really hit and miss with their motherboards. Their P67, Z68, and X79 stuff was essentially unusable due to consistent BIOS/firmware issues. The X79 Dark was well received, and all of their Z87/Z97 stuff was as well.

I'm not keeping up on any udpates to it, but I'd check out the EVGA forums and see what users are talking about.

The Gigabyte mATX board should be coming out pretty soon, maybe a couple weeks. If ASUS doesn't release one before that, then that'll most likely be the board I go with.
650W enough for the following...?

4790k, Sound Blaster Z Sound Card, 16GB RAM, Three SSDs, two mechnical HDD's, and a GTX 4GB 770?
Which 650W? But, almost certainly yes.

I only had positive experience with Asrock/GB while Asus had worst support for their mobos.

I just had an Asrock mobo fail and I am not sure how to return it to Asrock...

Asrock says I need to initiate the return through Newegg to get an RMA number.
Newegg says I'm out of the 30 day return window and won't help me, even though I just want them to send me an RMA Request Form to fill out (http://www.asrock.com/support/index.asp?cat=Policy - looks like normally they won't deal with end users directly), and to contact Asrock instead.

Has anyone else dealt with them for an RMA? There are so many exceptions to their warranty (saw in this thread that people who have had their mobos catch fire were asked to pay $50 to replace it) that I'm wondering if it would be better to just order another one for ~$90 since I'm going to have to pay for shipping there anyway :(

Right now I'm playing through Mass Effect, and running wonderfully, would like to play stuff I have missed out on, but I'm not into FPS games, as long as action games from the past 5 years run smoothly I'm good.

The EVGA Supernova

Where do we stand on AIO coolers, like the H100i? Considering I'm removing my 212 Evo to replace the thermal paste and realign it, I'm tempted to order a H100i whilst I'm there. It'll be a lot less bulkier.

It will give you literally zero improvement, in terms of performance.

It is less bulky, and easier to deal with. If you tinker, it's a lot easier to get in your system to mess with things when you dont have a giant aluminum block in the middle of your case.

If you're looking for an excuse to mess with things, because you're getting hit with the PC hardware bug, it's an excellent choice. :P

Well I might be able to crank my vcore to 1.3v and try and hit the fabled 4.3ghz on my 4670, as I'm stuck at 4.2 right now ;)

Unless, cooling wise, it's not that different

Nice! How much did that set you back?

Spent $1400 alone on just the X99 parts (DDR4 RAM, CPU and Mobo). Factor in the rest and I've dropped around $3000 into my rig. Just bought a 3440x1440 monitor a few months ago too... my wallet hurts :P

This is a long term build for me though, will likely not upgrade anything apart from the graphics cards for the next 5 years or so. That's how long my old X58 setup lasted.

I built this ~$350 computer for my brother a while back and it runs Minecraft without issue. I've never tried LoL on it, but DotA runs just fine.

Some of the parts aren't sold anymore, but essentially the same hardware is still available for the same price in the 'related' links.

It also allows for a future GPU upgrade, which is what my brother did, which makes it powerful enough to max pretty much every game.

Hi, I'm in the market for doing a few things computer related later this month, and this looked like my best option for where to ask for advice. I'm probably not going to be making any purchases til later this month, so I got a little time to plan, but I'd like to come up with some ideas.

Desktop

One of the first things I have been considering is beefing up my PC, I made it last fall, and at the time I didn't have a ton of money, but it was still an upgrade from the older PC I had at the time. I only reused my GPU, because it's still fair, but I am feel like I don't get quite the performance I'm happy with, so I want to upgrade.

Here are my current specs:

Windows 7 Ultimate (x64)
MB: H61M-P31/W8 (MS-7788) 1.0
3.20 gigahertz Intel Core i5-3470
8GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 Ti
1TB HDD - WDC WD10EZEX-00ZF5A0 [Hard drive]
ASUS VW246 [24" Monitor]
500w PSU (came with the case I bought, so yeah I know it probably isn't great)

My PC has been able to handle most games I throw at it fairly well, but I know it could be better. It doesn't always maintain a buttery smooth frame rate in every game, and the ones that it does, I feel like it barely meets the specs to perform that well. I'm kind out of the loop sometimes on what I should be getting strictly for gaming though. I know my CPU isn't the most fancy one out there, but I don't know if upgrading it would matter for gaming. I know my RAM is fair/average, but I don't know if it's worth it right now to upgrade. I know my PSU has gotten the job done, but I probably could use something better, and I know my GPU could be upgraded, but I don't know what is the smartest choice to get that would last for a while. With an announcement coming up, I probably should wait to buy one, but I'm still considering something like a 780 because that'll still be leaps better than what I have.

I know the GPU is probably the most expansive thing I'm considering upgrading. I have considered a bigger monitor though. 24 inches is nice...but I sit just far enough away from it that I kinda want something bigger still. I've looked up some of those ultra wide screens, but I don't know if that would be a good idea or not if a lot of software doesn't support it.

Laptop

The other thing I'm in the market for is some kind of laptop. This is primarily something I was looking for to take on the go, and have with me at college, so I can do work in a library or just somewhere away from home. Word processing, and web browsing would probably be the primary functions of it.

That being said, I don't want something too heavy either. Like to have something I throw in my backpack, and I know how heavy some laptops can be. One of the most ideal products I've looked at is something like a Macbook Air, because I saw those in the store, and the weight is just amazing. Of course what isn't amazing is the price...I just get real unsure about a laptop when something like that is over $500. I've read around online that there are PC style laptops called Ultra Books or something, but I have no idea which one might be good, and or if there are any with a decent price/performance.

One thing I was starting to consider after seeing another student doing this at school yesterday, is they basically just had an iPad with a bluetooth keyboard which turned into a laptop style device...I thought it looked pretty cool, and I know the price would be reasonable. However, I don't know if there are apps available to suit my needs, like some kind of word processor and so forth. Or if it'll work properly with my school's blackboard learning website.

I would appreciate if anyone has any ideas for something that you think would work good for me. Something light weight, decent battery length, and a fair price/performance.

I was looking at it.....oh boy....

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KYK1CKI/?tag=neogaf0e-20

That's what I went with. Undercuts the Corsair by $90 but performs just as well. Ripple is actually a bit better IIRC.

Awesome thanks, both look like solid PSUs, at least I'll have some time since I want to sell my 290X before sinking this monster into my rig.

I'm actually tempted to go with 5820k over 4790k now after some thinking, but now concerned about the life potential of 2011-3 socket.

At this point, I just assume every socket is good for one build. When's the last time there was a reasonable CPU upgrade on the same socket from Intel?

What do you mean?
It seems like people thought LGA 2011 was used too long.
Erm, all sockets support two releases. That is the way of things now.

1155 - SB and IVB
2011 - SB-E and IVB-E
1150 - Haswell and Broadwell
2011-3 - Haswell-E and Broadwell-E

Just installed a Samsung EVO ssd and I have to say... I'm starting to question my sanity.

Sure, boot times are pretty greatly improved BUT I can't say that I've noticed a tremendous difference in the amount of time it takes for applications to load nor have I noticed a huge difference in overall day to day operation. Granted it's only been a day. I'm starting to think maybe I should return it to the store though.

Am I crazy?
