Just curious since I know some of you guys are running 120/144 hz, but would a single GTX 760 be all right for most games? I'm sure something like CSGO would run flawlessly at least.

I've been debating on getting a 144 hz monitor within the next few months, but I'm not sure if my card is good enough. I would be going 1080p again since something like the ASUS ROG Swift is way too pricey for me at the moment and would probably murder my current GPU anyway.

You'd need to tell us how much you'd be paying.

Also there's no such thing as a 660 that has 4 gig of ram.

Hey I was wondering how to post a pcpartpicker link w/o linking my username. I see other peoples lists and it's like http://pcpartpicker.com/p/fYcgXL (example I just pulled)

Mine has /user/drota/etc . I just want to link a build without my username in it. Thanks.

There's a 'permalink' field on the left between 'System Build' and 'Current part list'. There is also the 'Export/Markup' button on the right where you can export the list in BBCode that you can just copy&paste into your post.

I'm not sure what you mean, but a GTX760 runs most games fine, that is in the 60fps range. My GTX780 can't give me 120fps for most modern titles.

Depends on the game in question and the settings you're using in the game.

Up until just very recently, my main machine was on a 7970 Matrix (1200 MHz) and ran just about anything at 1080p/120 fps. This is of course discounting the big graphics hogs where you want to jack up the settings. That's a tiny handful of games though. BF4 and Planetside 2 even, were able to run at 120ish with settings tweaks.

It is *really* important to have a high clocked Intel processor to maintain that kind of low frame time of 9ms or less as well.

So, 760 will definitely suffice for a vast majority of games. Anything competitive related, definitely.

All my parts have shipped EXCEPT a single drain valve fitting. Stock is expected in shortly but I just know it's going to hold up my build for a week if not more.

I am having this wierd issue. When Windows 8.1starts up, I get an error saying along the lines of "The last USB device I connected failed"...then it seems to through through the process of re-detecting all USB devices. Afterward, all my USB devices work until repeated on the next boot. In Device Manager there's problem with a "Unknown USB Device (Link in Compliance Mode)". Removing all my USB connections doesn't fix the issue. And, for some reason, Intel does not provide USB drivers for Windows 8. The only solution I have found is to disable USB XHCI in bios. Anyone have any possible solution?

Sorry if my post wasn't clear enough. Yeah, I mean running games at 120ish fps fairly consistently. For most games (that are not Arma 3) my 760 seems to hit 60 very often. I'm not sure how much I'd have to knock my settings down to hit 120.

Will I still see benefit if I am not constantly maintaining that 120 FPS? Let's say if I can maintain between 100 and 120. I'm not sure how much of an issue tearing would be with this high of a refresh rate (I have no experience at 120hz).

I guess as long as I can hit a stable 120 in competitive games it should be great. I also should mention I'm running an i5 3570k at 3.5 Ghz.

As long as you're constantly hitting ~85FPS or more, you'll be fine.

Try the Win 7 driver they list.

I'll second Llama. I generally find as long as it's around 9ms (90 fps) then you're pretty much golden. But overclock your processor too. Get it around 4.2-4.5. That's going to help very significantly in a lot of competitive multiplayer stuff.

Any techies that can help me?

Computer randomly restarts itself when playing games. Happened twice playing FIFA PC, also happened playing Divinity, WoW.

Everything would be fine then I would hear a couple of short noises and then computer would restart itself (no BSOD).
Since it is happening when playing games and not otherwise, would that be due to the GFX card?

But I have only seen it happen when gaming.

Not really sure how I can troubleshoot this.

PC is: Windows 7 64 bit GeForce GTX 670 8GB RAM Intel i5-4670K @ 3.4 GHz
750W Seasonic PSU

So I was looking at my i5 2500k and realized my overclock was pretty modest. I'm sitting at a steady 4.2 right now at 1.248 vcore. Temps are fine. Mid to low 30s idle. Mid 50s on prime95. Is it worth it trying to bump it up some more? I've had this over clock rock solid for at least a year and a half. If I'm entertaining a 970 or 980 should I bump it more?

i won't have any problems buying an r9 280 or similar and putting it into an old p5q se asus mb with a q6600 will i? i know its not ideal, but i kind of want to do the case/psu/gpu first (i've a dx 10.1 card so can't play fifa...) and then upgrade everything else once i've sold my guitar/mixer etc.

am i doing this wrong? :D

*edit: btw love this thread. read it for ages before signing up. should probably look for work in the area. it feels slightly obsessive, even without the means/money.

Nothing to worry about there in terms of parts working or not.

And f yeah \m/

ha, yeah. this may be expensive.

anyway, cheers bud!

i can pretty much guarantee it'll be on here if it happens :)

**edit: what's the score with CPU's now days? think i've got a 550w atm (decent brand), but its old and dusty and i'm not trusting it. is that still about the right wattage for a single GPU? maybe 650?

Yeah, 550W is plenty, depending on the quality of course.

antec earthwatt 500w. odd, i seem to remember it was low back then, but i decided the quality made up for it.

anyway, its just pretty old. 6 years or so. and they haven't been pretty years....

yeah that case looks nice. ffs....... i can feel my bank account emptying. where's the psu? behind the mb? doesn't look deep enough.?

What type of performance can I expect with this build?

My wife has a Phenom II X6 1045T @ 2.7GHz paired with an R9 270. I got 60fps in BF4 on med-high 1080p but it stutters and drops to ~45 occasionally. (at least once a minute)

Edit, just played some Titanfall, 1080p Everything on high, textures on extra high, double buffered, 62FPS (monitor's refresh rate)with occasional drops into the 50s when there are multiple Titans.

Yours may stutter a bit more since it only has 4 cores as opposed to six.

Hey guys, are the corsair sp120 fans compatible with the CM212 hyper.
If they are would the performance increase be substantial to the stock fan.

Thanks. Would it be worth it to get the PWM edition fans.
I currently don't have a fan controller.
No, it is not worth it. The stock fan on the CM 212 is pretty decent. We're talking a very minor difference here, maybe a few degrees.

At 1000-1300 RPM (about the max that most people find very quiet), there's almost zero appreciable difference.

It sounds like it would be a waste of 40$.
Is the evo that good, or is the difference between it and a noctua heatsink/fan that incremental?

Still gutted that I can't fit a h100i in my case.

Depends on the processor, really.

What case?

4690k,with a slight OC. Temps aren't running high at the moment, but I've got concerns about the summer as I don't have AC in that room

Corsair 300r,I've read about people who've installed it externally, but that just looks hideous in my opinion.

Yeah, you're not going to see much of a benefit with a better cooler. These things were designed and refined in a period when procs were using a huge amount of power. If you were on the enthusiast platform, the high TDP makes that kind of expense worth it. But seriously, even a high end closed loop cooler isn't going to give you access to clock speeds that would be otherwise unattainable with a Hyper 212.

If you want a closed loop cooler though, check out something like the H60 or H80.

I'll have a look at the h80. I seem to remember reading that this is a massive step down from the h100,is this valid? If I'd go that route would I need to install an extra fan to vent out additional air, seeing as the h80 would take its original spot.

I'm no expert on AIO water coolers, but from what I've seen, you're not being limited by the cooler itself as much as the shitty TIM in these processors.

Alright GAF, what started out as a simple power supply upgrade has evolved into something much larger.

Here's what I've bought thus far. By the way, if you're wondering about how I got some of those prices, a lot of those things were bought used or previous gift cards so the build has been subsidized by a good amount. The BenQ monitor I bought used but bartered a PS3 for it so the guy knocked off $150. The mechanical hard drives will be imported from my current computer so there was no need to buy new ones. I also have 12 gigs of DDR3 ram that I might be able to import assuming I don't get a DDR4 motherboard. Mouse will be imported as well.

Samsung 840 EVO 500GB 2.5" SSD - $138.90
Fractal Design Define R4 - $37.00
Corsair HX850W ATX12V / EPS12V - $100
Dell U2413 24.0 - $135
BenQ XL2411Z 24.0" - $63.00
Ducky DK9008 Shine 3 White LED Backlit - $112
Audio-Technica ATH-M50 - $100

Total: $685

What's missing is: Motherboard, GPU, CPU, RAM (maybe), CPU cooler and the case fans.

I don't plan on any crazy overclocking but I'm going to do it. Given how cheap the build has been thus far, should I bite the bullet go big on the mobo, CPU and GPU. Don't really have a strict budget (~$1400) but this build is shaping up to be pretty powerful given the components so it seems like I should for enthusiast parts for the Big Three components right? This PC is gonna be used for next gen gaming.

The cooler and case fans I'll figure out later.

I'm also willing to wait and sit for Black Friday/Cyber Monday deals by the way.

What do you guys think?

I'm extremely tempted to buy the new r9 285 instead of an nvidia counterpart. I've loved my 750 ti, but it isn't giving me enough performance on the games I play. I'm waiting until nvidia announces their new lineupy, but does anybody have an idea that would dissuade me in the less than $300 bracket?

Give it a couple of weeks. Nvidia is set to announce their new line of GPUs and the word on the street is that they're beastly.

Can anyone recommend a decent pair of speakers that I can use with my PC, PS4 and Wii U. My PC and PS4 can use optical so I'd like to use those. The Wii U is more limited and will require a cable going from my monitor headphone jack to an analogue connection in the speakers.

I dont want to spend hundreds but I'd like something decent with good bass. I'm based in the UK too.

Thanks!

Got it. Might be convinced to lay down another 100 if it's a bigger boost than I'm expecting. I was thinking 770, but fps between that and the 285 are very close cconsidering the price difference. I'll stick it out.

It's the CPU chip itself

There's an nVidia event in like 2 weeks might as well wait and see if they say anything.
No it's issue with every Haswell CPU in existence except Haswell-E ;)

Try asking in the Headphone and Speaker threads on GAF (Community?)
So this mSATA SSD is $399 with promo code right now:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ..._mmc=EMC-GD091014-_-index-_-Item-_-20-147-318

Wondering if I should get that since it's cheaper than the 2.5" version and use an adapter for installing on a desktop motherboard?
Call me skeptical but I don't like the idea of putting a 1TB mSATA on an adapter. Also in the past from looking only at review ratings they (M2 / MSATA) seem to have more issues.
1TB regular is 10% more.
