You're going with a Haswell-E proc? If so, yeah.

So the NZXT Kraken X41 one highlighted there is what you'd suggest? I'm reluctant to add an extra point of failure but if it helps with temps and overclocking, I'm willing to give it a shot.

No, it was just the most recent review to try and include everything.

But to be clear, you have a Haswell-E chip?

If money is no object, I really like the Swiftech H220x.

I plan to go with a 5930K or 5820K, yes. I wouldn't go as far as to say money is no object but I'm willing to splurge on this build.

Seriously follow your own advice, a seagate hdd is a mix of a timebomb and russian roulette for your data
These things should not be allowed to be sold.

And I bought an hybrid Seagate drive not long ago. So far, I haven't had any problems. I'm using it just for gaming purposes.

Pretty much all of the 240mm coolers are within spitting distance of each other. The reason why I like the Swiftech H220x is that it uses tried and true water cooling parts that people would use in a full on proper water cooling system.

There's folks that like that it's expandable, which is true, but in that sense it's more like a gateway drug than it is a super solid start to a full loop. I look at it as a premier AIO built with better parts than anything comparable.

I'll strongly consider it. I'd like to hit 4.4 - 4.5 Ghz and I know temps are a potential issue.

Okay I have a troubleshooting question.

So recently I have been getting issues where I occasionally wont get to boot and by restarting it will boot just fine.

Now today its taking about 5 min to get to even UEFI screen. I can see it stepping through the boot sequence like PCH config, CPU detect, IDE detect, boot event. Then it finally gets to the windows startup repair and says windows cant be repaired and sys restore fails on all my restore points.

I know there was a decent win7 update last night but the boot problems precede that.

From what I am reading on the ASUS foruma the slow boot sequence can be caused by bad PSU.

There is a problem signature for bad patch along with some other ones like autofailover and unknown in the startup repair log. The system restore error is " unspecified error"

Anyone get anything like this before. PSU is my oldest system component everything else is about 12 months old.

Currently trying to burn a windows disk so i can try the boot recovery tool

Try unplugging all USB devices, if that doesn't help, unplug your SATA cables, report back if any difference. Try to reset CMOS too.

To me it sounds like failing drive so far.

Yeah I was trying this as you posted and it seemed to work then I got a System Restore successful message when I logged in to Windows.

Odd thing is that I plugged all the USB devices back in and it rebooted fine(even cold boot). Might be that I have a bad port and I just didnt plug them back into the same ones....?

Im not in danger of losing any data so ill have to see if it develops.

Hey folks,

Haven't posted in this thread yet, but when I first built my PC I was not a GAFer.
That build crapped out (I have yet to find the culprit, but most signs point toward the mobo, RIVF)
It was also an opportune time to upgrade, since I do almost entirely multithreaded media work, and the 5960x seems a beast, so I went full x99.

Here is my build:
computah_by_roderickartist-d7ypefy.png

I am annoyed by the dust in the ap181s, and also, for the astute, the graphics card is in the wrong slot. I fixed it promptly, no worries. I'm not sure how I did that.

Specs:
CPU - 5960x
RAM - G.Skill Ripjaws 32gb DDR4 2400mhz
MOBO - Asus x99 Deluxe
PSU - EVGA Supernova 850 G2
COOLER - Phanteks PH-TC14PE
-from before
GPU - GTX 690
CASE - Silverstone FT02
plus some white cables :)

Anyway, I've spent the day trying to get my overclock going nicely, and I'm a bit bummed.
First off, the phanteks ph-tc14pe cooler is a beast and it is doing a good job keeping the CPU cool. My highest temp while working on the OC has been 79°C. (and that's with all fans at ~75%. I don't mind noise and doing full when its necessary)

My target OC is 4.3ghz or even 4.4. This seemed reasonable.
I based my approach on this Anandtech article.

The problem is I seem to be getting a stable 4.3ghz, but at 1.309v. That seems way too power hungry. I have the LLC at level 9 (it was crashing with auto).
From that article, 4.4ghz at 1.3v is said to be 'below average' binning for the chip. Do I have a super poopy chip?

I only really know how to tinker with the ratio, voltage (i'm doing offset for sake of the downclocking/undervolting) and LLC (which I just put to a high level, I don't know much else).

I am hoping that this poor performance is due to ignorance on my part rather than a particularly inefficient chip.

So, any suggestions?

**The 4.3ghz at 1.3v crashed. What the heck :( Temps didn't go above 80°C

For the sake of finding out your actual chip's limits, try going with a static voltage for the time being. It'll still downclock, it just won't reduce the voltage.

How's your memory set up? XMP?

Alrighty. My target voltage was 1.25volts, also based off that article. So I'll set it to that and work up from a lower multi, yeah?

Memory is XMP 2400mhz

Use a lower LLC and higher Vcore.

What are you stress testing with?

Edit
Reading around, seems like LLC is applied to VCCin and not Vcore due to on chip FIVR.

Make sure BIOS is updated too.

Hmm, I guess I got a bit of the wrong impression about the binning. I'm stress testing with prime95.

I'm running 4.3ghz, LLC 6, 1.325volts right now, stable for the moment.

I guess if the temps are okay, >1.3v isn't bad?

BIOS is most recent.

It's a big guess on what's bad or not for the chip. Nobody has quantified the effect of over volting ever, although saying that, the general consensus is around 1.3v & just keep temps in check.
See what it takes for 4.3ghz, see what it takes for 4.2ghz, see if the performance increase is worth the jump in temps, voltage and degradation.

I just had a realization. This is the first real backup I've done in 16 months. With everything on one 1TB Seagate HDD.

http://cuteprogramming.files.wordpress.com/2013/06/meme-i-also-like-to-live-dangerously.png[][/QUOTE]

I have 6TB of non backed up storage as well as 3x1TB 7200.11 Seagate drives which have the infamous firmware bug lol.

Edit
I lie my documents and music are on the cloud. But that's hardly much.

Hey guys, I'm putting together a build for my friend. He has an incredibly tight budget but wants something that can run games pretty decently (we play a lot of Minecraft and GMod). He would like to be able to play DayZ and really enjoys first person shooters.

I put this list together, how's it looking? Any possible improvements?

With that kind of budget, I might advise going used. I don't know if Day Z would be playable on that APU. Minecraft, no prob though.

Heh I still use one of those as a storage drive too. What a disaster it was when they all started failing though.

I think I did upgrade the firmware but can't remember and should actually check for my own good... Lol. Nothing mission critical on my drives so I'm not fussed.

I bought mine after the firmware upgrade came out, and got it super cheap (since everyone was avoiding them, obviously) haha. Yeah I just have a bunch of old pictures and documents I don't really care about on mine.
