It's a waste of time and money from AMD. If AMD really wants to shake up the FX series, it ought to introduce new silicon based on the Steamroller cores that drive Kaveri, and it ought to offer a new chipset worthy of the FX's enthusiast aspirations. Price cuts and variations on old themes are all well and good, but they're not enough if AMD wants to keep up with Intel.
Like I said, too little too late and you are mostly right. I am not seeing anything interesting from Kaveri despite all the hype.

The only thing that is ideal coming out of this is you don't have to worry about your motherboard going up in smoke/subsequently throttling your CPU in future firmware updates because it was never really designed to handle the 125W FX series. Given that the cheapest one is $154, though, it makes little sense to build a new rig with this. Best option would be to sell off your old FX CPU for maybe half the price and put that towards the new FX.

What they should really do is make a 65-70something watt version of the 6300 and price it at $69.99 or something. They really need to drop prices and consolidate the FX line. Have the 6 core 65W for $60-70 and an 8 core 95W for $90-100. Eliminate all the other models. None of the FX CPU's are worth their current price anymore and there are far too many of them.

Supposedly AMD have a brand new CPU architecture in the works based on SMT. Maybe they can get back in the game this time around.
As a consumer I would welcome that.
They should hurry up.

Where is all this dream cast talk coming from? Did I miss something?

No, it would not screw right in.

Yes, anything is possible with enough time determination and skill

I originally ordered a EVGA Supernova 750w G1 PSU because the Newegg price was pretty damn good but after looking at the reviews and such it doesn't seem it's as good of a PSU as I would like.

So.... I canceled that ordered and went with this..

EVGA SuperNOVA 850 G2

Thoughts?

I have a question about external drives, I figure this is the best place to put it. I need a 1-2tb drive and am looking to spend about 90 dollars if that is good enough for something quality.

Good timing, the WD Elements 2TB USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive is currently $90 at Amazon. Great drive, get it now, its the lowest I've seen it.

Externals regularly go on sale (particularly during the holidays), and I'd expect a decent deal if it's no more than $30 per TB. (So, a 2TB for $60) I've been using the Seagate Backup Plus, and I prefer to buy in pairs to mirror the data, in case one fails.

It has a really nice box. Best box out of all the computer bits I've received for whatever that is worth. Here is what convinced me to buy it. http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story&reid=377

Trying to run my Gamecube games on Dolphin. My i7 3770k can't handle Mario Kart Double Dash. What graphics card should I buy to be able to play these games with pretty good settings. The Dolphin websites over a 4 series. Any recommendations?

Right, ordered all the parts for my X99 and not cancelling any of it this time. If stuff shows up, then cool, if not it's just going to sit in a box for a month because I can't be bothered any more :p

Awaiting: 5820K, MSI X99S SLi Plus, 16GB G.Skill DDR4, Define R4.
Cost me £708, I think. :/ Looks like I saved quite a bit on the DDR4... cost £180.

What is your current graphics card?

Ok thanks, I went to PC Part Picker and made a preliminary build, could use some advice. I don't really have any guidelines aside from I want the i7 5820K, and I'll be getting the GTX 900 series (probably 970, but if anyone can help me save anywhere in this build I'll go 980):

CPU: i7 5820K
Motherboard: ASRock X99 Extreme3 ATX LGA2011-3
Memory: Crucial 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2133
Video Card: GTX 970 (980 possible)
Storage: Crucial MX100 256GB 2.5" SSD (have external HDD already)
Case: Fractal Design Define R4 w/Window (Titanium Grey) ATX Mid Tower
Heatsink: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing
Power Supply: Cooler Master 750W ATX12V
Optical Drive: Blu-Ray

The goal with this is to be able to play games at high quality, but more importantly, do Oculus Rift DK2 development. However, if there's anything cheaper available within this build I'll also appreciate that. Thoughts?

Any thoughts on this?

So my computer has been shutting down by itself, but only in sleep mode. Then windows alerted me yesterday that errors were found on my drive and fixed them. Failing hard drive or a couple bad sectors?

What would you guys recommend to protect your PC? Like surge protectors don't have good brownout protection and UPS don't have good surge protection(usually) but are great for other things like brownouts. Is there something out there that can do everything without much weakness?

Is there a consensus best video card for under $150 right now? My Radeon 6870 is crapping out on me and I'm looking to replace it with something not too expensive.

I've got a 500 watt power supply too, if that makes any difference.

If $150 is a hard-line....I would go with this R7 265:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127790

Other vendors 265's are fine too, if you have a preference for Gigabyte, Asus, etc.... If you can get a little more $$ or wait for some sort of sale, you could probably get a 270.

Actually, this Sapphire R9 270 is $150 right now....http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202090

I've got a question Gaf. My 4790k runs a bit hotter than most I've seen online, it's in an acceptable range, but I'm wondering if this is because I'm running on integrated graphics until Nvidia makes their announcements. Does using the iGPU increase CPU temp?

Thanks, I'll check those out.

The problem I keep having is getting hiccups and short freezes and then the words "display driver stopped responding and has recovered" shown in the bottom right corner of the screen. Is this indicative of a problem with the GPU or could it also be the CPU and/or RAM? The computer is about 2.5 years old. Intel i-5 2500K, 8GB RAM, Radeon 6870. The problem happens when I start trying to play a YouTube video at full screen or something similar. It doesn't happen all the time but has started happening frequently enough that I know that something is crapping out.

That's at stock though. I was hoping to OC it at least a bit, will I have to improve my cooling once I decide to OC?
Over clocking won't change your temps all that much. Intel burn test is an outlier test as you will never reach that level of use. Also the 4790 is already running at 4.0 stock and 4.4 under load.

GAF, should I invest in an SSD for my rig? What are the benefits for gaming, and gaming only? Better loading times?

For most games no.titles like skyrim with constant little load times DO benefit. Upgrading solely for gaming probably not worth it. You STILL should upstage for the countless other reasons. Your overall experience will be greatly improved. Also, ssds are not expensive.

Faster booting and loading times, better asset streaming (no texture pop-in).

And then you get to say to yourself.. "Why didn't I buy one sooner".

There is no way you will regret upgrading to a SSD drive. Unless you buy a crappy brand but I don't even think you can.

SSD kinda are expensive when you live in Brazil and have to deal with 60%+ inflation on eletronics and PC components due to import taxes. For instance, a Kingston 120GB SSD costs around U$125, and that's the smallest price I can find.

What are the biggest non-gaming benefits that a SSD would bring? I don't work on my PC so that's not really a factor to me.

Check your BIOS. You may be running it at a higher voltage than you need to for stock.

It's pretty huge difference. I have a 256GB one and don't even put games on it. Having an SSD makes just using the OS/browser/etc. so smooth and snappy. It's wonderful. Plus boot times are so quick.

With 4K monitors and the like becoming more affordable(ish), is it really worth buying a 1440p monitor at this point? I'm tempted to get one but the Asus PB278Q is more than double the price of the 1080p one I'm also considering. I'm not sure if I should just go with the cheaper option for now and upgrade when higher res monitors drop in price.

Exactly what I found myself saying back in 2012 when I got my first SSD. I now have four in my gaming PC along with one mechanical drive.

100% right, there are so many quality options available right now that you simply can't go wrong but I'd advise against some older Kingston models.
Intel 730, Samsung 850 Pro, Corsair Neutron GTX, Kingston HyperX 3K are my favorites.

all of those and you didn't even mention the Crucial MX100 :(

side note: my 4790K is now stable @ 4.8, gonna see if I can still get voltage lower

I finally have the tubes oriented to satisfy my eye.

I hope your CPU is OC'd. Dolphin, like most emulators, is heavily CPU bound

Everything loads faster, Windows bootup, programs load practically instantly, file searching is vastly improved, everything that the computer does is just faster.

Thanks for the replies, I did some hunting around and in the end I went for the evga supernova g2 750w.. It seemed like an absolute beast! I currently have a gs600 corsair and found my boot ssd had died about a week or so back, today I went to over clock my video card and now it seems my dvd drive has died.. Intermittent problems when powering on too, worrying. It's either psu or mb imo, unless anyone else has any thoughts?!
