Someone else with more first hand knowledge on that cooler can say better but I'm pretty sure using aftermarket paste is a thing of the past. Use whatever comes with the cooler.

edit: With the Pentium chip you're getting, the cooler itself may be overkill. It's usually recommended just to use the stock cooler for that.
I got that pentium chip and am water cooling it with an h80i.
I just set the multiplier to 43 for 4.3ghz out of the box and under occt it never goes above 54 degrees.
Pretty incredible IMO. Once my ssd arrives I'm going to mess with it some more. See how high I can OC it.

Just curious, but is there anything gaming related (bad) that I should know about before making the switch from Windows 7 -> Windows 8.1? I have a feeling whenever I get around to re-formatting my drive, I will be doing so with that OS.

Speaking of SSD: does the Samsung 840 Pro have the same firmware bug as 840 EVO? I'm loving the specs for the pro (expecially the reliability part) bu if that one's bugged too I might opt for a Crucial instead

Some old games might have more trouble getting to run? Can't think of anything else. Oh yeah, ironically GFWL seems to have an occasional problem with Windows 8.

The Pro does not as it uses MLC instead of TLC flash.

Think I should shave something off? I'd welcome spending 100-150 eur less, but it's not really a requirement.

If it doesn't come with good paste i can grab a tube when i pickup the remaining parts later this week.

yeah, this really isn't necessary, i only did it because a) i bought a used CPU and b) the video from the OP included that step and following along more or less exactly made me feel better. :p pretty silly, i know.

BTW:

FIRST POST FROM THE NEW COMPUTER!

finally got connected to the internet after a week of having this gorgeous and useless box sitting in front of me. no more using a tablet at home for me!

woooooooooo!

Holy crap. You and I have almost the exact same build. I have a different case and a power supply/SSD by different manufacturers, but specs-wise everything else is almost identical. I just don't have my video card or hard drive yet, but the machine has been built for a couple months now running on onboard video, and it is a beast so far. Only difference is I'll have two HDDs in a RAID setup as my machine will double as a media center.

WTF same here lol. Nearly identical to mine as well but I swapped the evo 212 for a noctua nh-d14 as I wasn't liking the temps I was getting while gaming with the evo. Now my system doesn't get above 54c while playing BF4 maxed out.

I have the Corsair H60 2013 model and it's really good. I've switched the stock fan to an 'Aerocool Dead Silence' and my i7 4790K is hovering 30-35 degrees, with the Balanced Power Options. The H60 is easy to install and it's really effective at keeping the CPU cool and not being a nuisance in terms of noise. I have the H60's stock fan on the side of my case, I know it's not ideal but I did first test the stock fan in front of the radiator and it was very quiet.

thanks for the input. it'll be a bit before i'm ready to overclock so i'm gonna keep my eyes open for any deals before i grab anything. cheers.

How much was it before under similar load? Also, does the noctua require low-profile RAM?

Something you could try is to download Ubuntu, chuck it on a USB stick, boot up and see if audio is OK. If that works then you know your hardware is OK and you're looking at a software problem.

You could also check the motherboard manufacturer's website and see if there's a BIOS update available.

Also, where did you get the drivers you're using? CD, manufacturer's website, MS Windows?

So I just installed my 970, and decided to try plugging a TV into the card using HDMI, which my monitor doesn't have, and the audio was fine.

According to System Information, I have a more recent BIOS version than on the manufacturer's site. I got all of my drivers from there as well.

Also, I'm not sure if this is related, but I just quickly booted up both Sleeping Dogs and Crysis 2 to take a look at the performance of the 970. Within a few minutes of booting up the games, the computer suddenly restarted on its own. This happened both times I tried Sleeping Dogs, and the only time I tried Crysis. It almost seemed like some cutoff was being activated and the computer was shutting down.

All this stuff not quite working out is making me a bit nervous...

Anyone with the X99S had issues with front USB 3.0 ports? I'll check the board connection again just in case, but I think it's a driver issue.

So I've just sold my 670 and don't actually have a new GPU to upgrade to atm. Am I fine to take it out and just use the intergrated graphics (I won't actually be gaming) for general computer use? What do I need to do about drivers etc?

They'll be fine for that. Intel's site will probably be able to autodetect what you need.

Have you got enough power? Most recent drivers?

I know it's not unsafe or bad but I wanted to try my hand at overclocking at some point so figured may as well just spend a couple more bucks and get something better while I can still return the EVO. Anyway while playing BF4 I was seeing temps getting into mid/upper 70s after an hour or so of playing now 54c max. Running aida64/xtu stress test it would get into the 80s with the evo. Now XTU only hits 62c max mostly in the mid/upper 50's with the noctua. Idle temp is also now like 10-15c cooler than evo. I also tried reseating/repasting the evo but nothing changed at all. I have the g.skills ripjaw ram btw.

US PC-GAF LOOKING FOR A DECENT HEADSET SHOULD BUY ONE OF THESE

Newegg Shell Shocker - HyperX Cloud Pro Headset - $70

Sennheiser PC 350 SEs on Amazon - $130

Both are absolutely fantastic pieces of kit. The Cloud Pro headset has been given the thumbs up by every review, even the people that typically hate gaming headsets.

The Sennheiser mic will make your voice sound like it is coming from angels because it's that fucking good. Cans are good too, it's Sennheiser. The identical (technically) G4me Zeros are selling for $200-220, to give you an idea of this bargain.

I just bought the Sennheisers because my AKG Q701s got wrecked by a dog I was sitting over the weekend. Fucker.

TBH, I'm actually looking forward to replacing them with the Sennheisers, as I've never used a headset as comfy. Plus dat mic.

That Define is going to make the inside of your case really hot with two windforces going in there. I'd advise replacing the case fans, or getting a different case. Despite isolating sound with the foam, I'd be willing to bet that'll run louder than a case with better airflow and no sound dampening.

I'm not a big fan of the motherboard option with a build that is so high end otherwise. But there's a lot of people that don't see value in decent motherboards, so I understand.

I'll look into cases, thanks for the heads up. If you have any recommendations on those too I'd really appreciate it.

Mobo you picked is fine but personally wouldn't choose it. Killer NIC is something to stay away from if possible. I'd go of Asus Z97-A or Pro. Gigabyte provably have something decent at the £100 mark too.

I also agree about going for a different case, the R4 runs very hot compared to others.

Rather stay away from seagate if you can, ideally Hitachi and if not then Western Digital.

Crucial MX100 SSD if possible due to Samsung Evo TLC NAND firmware bug.

Seasonic 550W G Series PSU over the Corsair CX range which is not anything amazing.

Why? I've never heard anyone talk bad about Killer NIC.
I still haven't had a 100% conclusive answer to what's up with it, but it sometimes doesn't play nice with Win 8/8.1.

I think, that the issue is with the actual Killer software, whereas the simple Qualcomm Driver (the chip itself is a Qualcomm NIC) is fine.

In either case, it still doesn't perform quite as well as the newer Intel NICs.

This thread has had some users have trouble with their software and drivers causing poor network throughput. And on top of that I know Intel have their act together since they use the same/similar NICs on servers. Intel is like professional grade, Killer is gamer grade, and from my experience Intel is better overall. Board manufactures using Killer brand as a selling point is a gimmick.

The HDMI port on the video card is not making use of your motherboard's Realtek hardware for sound processing, that's all happening on the video card. So that doesn't actually let you know that the motherboard is okay.

Yeah it was like $45 more as well but I plan on keeping this build for a while so $45 isn't much in the long run. Definitely worth it IMO.

Yeah that one more issue, use an Intel NIC and it just works. No need to do any config, I've yet to see how these other NICs really do anything useful. A lot of builders tend to want to install and forget, so here I wouldn't recommend them if there is an alternative.

Hey guys! My friend's laptop died and he's looking for a new PC so we found this used rig for 600€ on a classifieds website. What do you guys think?

The mobo is actually the LX version and the power supply is the NOX Urano VX 650 Watts but I couldn't find those parts on the website. GPU is listed as Sapphire R9 290 4GB and I think that's the one I linked but I'm not sure.

Thanks in advance for the feedback.

And it's currently on sale on Newegg for $70. I should stop reading this thread, my PC is turning into a black hole that sucks up all my money...

One more question though: DId you have to take the motherboard out of the case to switch fans, or was it possible to reach everything with it still mounted?

So, I'm looking to upgrade my case and possible PSU. I'm currently running a NZXT Phantom 940 with a Corsair 550W PSU. I'm looking to see about getting a bigger case with better air flow and a comparable PSU with modular cables for better cable management. Does anyone have any suggestions? My rig is a 4670k @ 4.3, an older GTX 680 and 8GB of Vengeance; a couple of HDD and an SSD for OS partition, so I'm sure a 550W is still sufficient. Thanks for any suggestions.

The LX isn't a great motherboard, but should be fine. Seems like an okay deal. I'm not too hot on that PSU though.
Phanteks Enthoo Pro on the case, if $100 is about the budget. If you want cheaper, there are some alternatives in the OP.

For the PSU, it honestly depends on the day you buy it. There's probably 20ish PSUs that are all great quality, and they all go on and off sale. In general though, the Seasonic G Series, CoolerMaster VSM series, and Corsair RM series are great for the price and modular.
