No point in upgrading, i have a i7 3770 with a 970 no problems. Mine is overclocked to 4.2Ghz, but you should be able to go much further with a K chip, 4.5Ghz should be easily done with any mid range CPU Cooler.

If I understand you correctly, there's no point in upgrading right now, but what about Broadwell and Skylake? Is Broadwell a good point or just wait a few months longer and get into the new microarchitecture of Skylake?

Mussssttttt hold out for skylake until i make my upgrade from ivybridge

But man are they making it hard

damn that looks incredible.

I want to ask for advice about upgrading my processor. I currently have an i7 2600K OC to 4.5 GHz which I think is a fantastic chip, but I might start running into bottlenecks with newer games and don't know how much it might also affect the performance of my new 970.

Upgrading this processor would also mean getting a new board and cooling system, since I'm at it, a new case, just so I can keep my current PC (with an old graphic card as a backup/DLNA server).

So is it worth to upgrade to the top (I'm going for a high-end processor) processor right now, or should I wait for Broadwell, I don't know when Skylake are coming or even if they might miss 2015. Also no AMD.

I'm not in a hurry to upgrade right now, but I will like to do so within 8 months at most. Thanks for any answers.

I'm still rocking an OC'd 2500k. I don't really see the benefit of upgrading solely for gaming right now. It's costly and might get you 10% improvement? I'm waiting for Skylake.

Hey gaf, so I recently purchased the above PSU for a mid tower case, but I also want to re use this same PSU for a Micro ATX build down the line.

- I was wondering if this exact case will fit in a Bitfenix Prodigy case?

- Anyone else use the Corsair AX 760 PSU in a Bitfenix Prodigy case?

Here is the link for it on Newegg http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139042&cm_re=ax760-_-17-139-042-_-Product

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are you sure you don't mean a Mini-ITX build? Because the Bitfenix Prodigy is a Mini-ITX case, which is smaller than Micro ATX.

Aside from that, your current power supply should work fine. Sometimes modular power supplies can be a little bit longer, but that one seems pretty normal sized. Might want to look up specific dimensions if you're that worried about it, though.

hey, don't visit here often but time has come again and I think I might buy a new PC in the next 3 months, around 850€ budged, give or take 50 (more take than give -.-)

this is what i came up with atm
okko.png

mostly based on number 3 in the OP

sorry for the non english but I think people should get what I mean
not thinking about any overclocking at all

so questions:
-any cheaper CPU alternatives that wouldn't bottleneck the whole thing? the reason I'm asking despite being under the 850€ thing is that this is the online price of that store and I might buy it from some other place not necessarily from there, it's just the best place I've found to mess around with configuration so in general the stuff is about 10-20% more expensive per part which can add up
prefer intel
-760 vs 280x, benchmarks show 280 being very slightly ahead, but idk how nvidia vs ati is atm, I remember reading some driver problems and not properly working with some games etc, had an ati so far and I think it was fine so maybe the whole thing is overblown, idk
-psu fine? it's the thing I'm most ignorant about, 550 enough for all of this? agian, not thinking about any overclocking, but might replace some part down the line
-1866 vs 1600 MHz ram, any big difference? went with 1866 atm because well bigger number and didn't really notice much of a price difference ^^

edit: forgot to say, gaming mostly obviously, only have a 22" so still rocking that 1680:1050

It's extremely easy, actually. You just use Bootcamp like you're preparing to install Windows on your Mac and it'll make the bootable USB drive. Then you can use it to install Windows on your new computer.

If only it were that easy. That was the first option I tried actually and my pc wouldn't recognize the USB drive at all.

I did it a few months ago (twice, actually), so I don't know what you were doing wrong.

I don't know what to tell you. I tried making it using the boot camp utility as well as through terminal commands, but no dice. I was able to make an ubuntu boot drive using the same method though, so not sure what's going on there. I even used the exact same Windows iso on ubuntu and it worked, so the issue must have been with the way Mac formats the disk. When I inserted the working USB into my Mac afterwards I got a message that the disk was unreadable.

Looks like a solid build, at first glance.

Can't say much as to alternatives for the CPU, the 4690 is the best you're going to get in that price range, while also saving a little by not getting the unlocked version. (I have a stock clock 4690K myself, runs like a dream.)

From personal experience, I would go with Nvidia if it's not cost-prohibitive. I've had an AMD card for the past couple years, and I just cannot stand their shoddy drivers. But it works, so whatever. Get whichever works better for you, price-wise.

550 watts should be fine for what you have there, just make sure it has a single, good 12v rail.

Not really much point in paying more for higher clocked RAM, it's not going to make a noticeable difference, so it's not worth the higher price. RAM has gone up in price recently, so probably better to look for something cheaper.

Only other input I can think of is that you should consider getting an SSD (64GB - 120GB) for your OS drive. It really makes a world of difference for boot time. Plus, they're pretty cheap right now.

@Enosh
The MB you chose does not support RAM speeds higher than 1600 iirc...
ah thank you, the site usually does a good job of keeping stuff that isn't supported off the list, might be an oversight, will look into the 1600MHz versions anyway due to what metal said

and yeah, was thinking about that SSD, there is one for about 50€ (the the same one that is in the OP iirc) so if I stay at around 800€ I'll probably get it

as for the card will look into the 760, think it's about the same price range
also card, what the fuck do I do with the billion versions? there is the same ati card with some boost and 40€ cheaper and there is some windforce 760 and OC ones and way too much variants in general -.-

I would just narrow it down to a couple and look at reviews/benchmarks to see which is the most quiet/lowest temps/dependable. Installing a new video card is one of the easiest thing you can do anymore, so you shouldn't have to worry about compatibility issues.

But, honestly,
I just got what I thought looked coolest.

Now that I have my computer up and running, where do I go to overclock my CPU (i5-4690K) and GPU (Sapphire R9 280 Dual-X 3GB)? I've never done this before and want to make sure I don't make any mistakes or screw up my system, so can someone please point me to a step-by-step guide?

Okay pc gaf, not building my new pc just yet, but I'll be grabbing a new gfx card in the meantime. The only stipulations I have is that it will eventually be in an mini itx build, it will drive a 34 inch ultrawide (1440) and hopefully can be had for $300-$400.

What say you?

ITX 970.

Can anyone in the UK suggest a good website that delivers custom PC builds? I was hoping to check their prices and see how much more expensive it would be compared to buying each component separately and building it myself (which I've never done before).

If I tried building it myself I'd be worried about forgetting to buy some cable or the sound card or some such thing like that, so would ideally prefer to get an online business to build it for me?

Any advice would be appreciated ! :)

Not sure just yet. Just did a cooler master elite 130 build for my brother and it was pretty awesome. The node 304? Interest me as well.

CM Elite 130 can take 343mm card, so even the Gigabyte G1 (312mm) will fit inside it. The Node is slightly smaller at 310mm, so no need to restrict yourself to small cards. Most other cards will be less than 310.

That's cool I just wasn't sure if the itx 970 was better aside from the size.

Anyone have brand suggestions for the full size 970's?

Would anyone be able to share with me a link for a Windows 8.1 ISO image? I grabbed a key from that subreddit and downloaded 8.1 through the link they provided, but there's an error when selecting it when I try and create a bootable USB.

It's Windows 8.1 Standard N. Apologies if this is the wrong place to ask.

Hmm need help on this one. Moving my SSD today the back part snapped off (the L shaped part that sits ontop of the power connectors). I cant get the pins to plug into the power supply anymore.

So im going to be ordering a new SSD off newegg (probably a samsung 840) but I wanted to know if there is anyway I can get windows again. I had bought my windows off of Reddit like 3 years ago but now I found out they cant sell on there anymore.

I feel so defeated right now....

Does anyone know where you would normally power the fan LEDs on an Enermax Ostrog GT?

Molex usually.

What other worries? Since all cables are supplied and if you dont have a sound card you use onboard sound which 90% people do. We can advise you on what to buy and that will mean you dont forget any parts. Watch some videos on how to put it together, its quite simple.

Got the MSI GTX 970 Gamer in my Node 304, no issues.

Thanks guys. This is what I've decided on so far:

Screen_shot_2014_11_13_at_19_30_18.jpg

http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/qzz9yc

Any suggestions for:

- Power supply (estimated wattage for just the above is apparently 317W)
- CPU cooler
- Case

?

Does the above set-up sound ok? It's mostly to play Elite Dangerous. Don't need anything too extreme as a case, just something not too noisy.

Any reason why you want an ATX rig to do that? Consider mITX or atleast mATX, no need for a huge tower these days.

So before I put in my GTX 970, I should uninstall my AMD drivers for my 6850 right?

It doesnt really matter but the best way is:

Download Display Driver Uninstaller
Follow the on screen prompts to Uninstall the drivers for a New GPU installation - Itll finish in Shutdown.
Then install the new GPU into the PC.
Then install the nVidia drivers.

Windows will use a generic driver when there is no driver installed.

Finally open DDU up again and set it to download Windows Updates drivers for new hardware automatically - This is disabled on first run.

Sorry to sound like a complete noob but I didn't even know what ATX or ITX was before your post. What's the difference between an ATX and ITX motherboard?

So you're saying I don't need a huge tower for the set-up I want? Won't that impact expandability, say if I want a second graphics card to SLI in future?

Yes the main loss of going with the smaller board is the fact that it only supports 1 PCIE card. But a lot of first time builders say they will SLI in the future but never do/will - I was one of them many years ago.

If you want your rig to be SLI ready you'll want something like a 750W PSU and ideally an ATX case to manage the heat output.

Most people don't end up running dual GPUs because of lack of consistent scaling in games, noise, heat and power consumption. It becomes much more optimum to just sell the old GPU and buy the next best single GPU you can afford.

Is that not just the download for the update program? It was only 6MB. I'm looking for the full OS ISO to put on my USB for a fresh install on my new PC. I know it's probably simple to find just googling it, but someone here is probably likely to know the best place to download it that isn't some dodgy copy or something. Just a little paranoid about installing it on the PC and having it cock something up.

Like Pray for Death also said, a cheaper CPU and put the money into the GPU....

Yeah, of course an i5 would be better at a lot of CPU heavy tasks....but with your budget and a desire for gaming performance, your first build just does not make a lot of sense. In the vast majority of recent and current games, it is the GPU that is the limiting factor.

The G3258 "Pentium Anniversary" CPU is a good overclocker when paired with even moderately priced cooling like the CM 212 Evo. The whole point of the chip is that it gives you two fast Haswell cores that overclock really well, so yes you need to buy some form of aftermarket cooler.

If you can go up a little on the budget, do so....but put that money into the GPU, so move up to an R9 280X for example.

Just wondering, what would be considered a CPU intensive task? I was also thinking of getting an i5, but now that I think of it, I'm not sure if putting more money into the CPU will be worth it considering what I use my computer for.

Is running an emulator, like dolphin for example, CPU intensive?

Yeah its the right file
Follow this
Once you have your product key and are on a PC running Windows 8.1, Windows 8 or Windows 7, follow these steps:

Run the Windows 8.1 Setup program.

When prompted to run or save the file, choose Run

When prompted to enter a product key, enter the 25-digit product key you received when you bought Windows 8.1.

When prompted to install Windows 8.1, select Install by creating media, then click Next.

Select the type of media you want to use: either a USB flash drive or a DVD.

To create a USB flash drive

Click on USB flash drive.

Plug the USB flash drive into a USB port on your PC.

When prompted, select the USB drive you want to use, then click Next.

If you have files on the USB flash drive, they'll be deleted.

Yeah, emulators are generally considered to be CPU intensive. But IIRC they don't usually take advantage of hyper-threading, which is the big difference between i5's and i7's.

So this is my final choices

CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor

CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO Direct Heat Pipe CPU Cooler

Motherboard: Asus Z97-A Socket 1150 Intel Z97 Chipset | Dual Channel DDR3 3200 (O.C)

Memory: Kingston HyperX Fury Black 8gb (2x4GB) DDR3 1866MHz CL10 DIMMs

Storage: Seagate Desktop HDD 1 TB 3.5" SATA3 64mb Cache OEM HardDrive

Video Card: GTX 970 4gb GGDR5

Case: Corsair Carbide Series 300R Gaming Case Black

Power Supply: Corsair Builder Series CX600 V2 600 Watt 80 PLUS Bronze Certified Supply

Monitor: Asus VS238H-P 23.0" Monitor

So what do you say GAF will it work well? How long will it last?

Will I be able to run the latest games with good settings.... Will this run Star Citizen at all

I am new to this and I this is the final thing I got from advice from you guys... store guys and friends
