just want to say thank you to the folks that helped me with that budget build.

My last computer that I sold to my buddy had a 3770k and a 970GTX

but holy shit in terms of performance and cost have things come insanely far. Even without the graphics card this thing is a freak on its own. I can't believe we live in an age where $400 can build you a freakishly fast desktop with only another $200-$250 to make it one hell of a gaming machine. I am insanely happy with the size of the thing....I can actually fit it in my computer desks legit tower spot due to its size!!!! Also plenty of room due to the fact micro ATX seems to be the new thing.

Can't wait to see how much smaller we can get these things to in the future! I mean my graphics card is literally less than half the size of what my Direct II GTX 680 was that is coming in the mail today

The Corsair fans that come with the H100i is controlled by the Corsair Link software and not via PWM. So that's the reason why you only have three pins connecting into the fan header.

The SP120L fans that come with the H series AIOs are notoriously loud. I replaced my H100i fans with Noctua NF F12 fans and even when under load I cannot hear them (then again, I have the Corsair 400Q case that has sound insulation..

EDIT: Dont buy a Noctua Y splitter as advised - they come with the fans as well as a low noise adapter.
I bought several NF-A14 and NF-F12 industrial fans and none of them came with any extras. Might be different for the non-industrial line.

E: Just checked noctuas site, only the regular beige-brown NF-F12 come with the splitter and ULNAs

I'll be building my first this Wednesday and i have the same concerns. CPU placement and cooler installation, the rest will be (hopefully) easier.

Know how it feels. ;D
Sweet. be sure to post your progress. I'd like to know how it's going, and get some tips. :)

I have built over 10 computers fuck this every damn time

the one mobo I just used even had all the pins offset so you had to besically constantly look at the pins and the mini diagram underneath and checking to make sure you count was right.

Just to help you as well, color = positive and the white = negative for orientation. Because the actual spaces will not be color coded or nicely done like this picture. It's usually all black with tiny ass text telling you where each one goes. My mobo didn't even include the diagram in the instructions lol.

Goddamit, I'm rapidly falling into this rabbit hole.

I always was few generations behind in CPU and GPU and never tried OCing my PC.
I was fine until very recently Doom decided it does not want to run on my PC like at all (20FPS on low).
So a few weeks ago I have purchased GTX1070 and it felt awesome! Crazy FPS meters on ultra in most games.
Now I want more!

And now I am ordering 6600K, MSI gaming MB and 16GB DDR4 3000MHz RAM.
It will be fucking glorious!

Pls stop me ;_;

I agree. The second worst part of my build. Putting the cooler was worse, the 212 is shit in that regard.

I love the coolers, especially the stock ones which are actually really decent that sound like your snapping your board in half when they are just clicking into the mobo XD. Sound haunts me every install lol

Yep I got the standard NF-F12s, they also had extension cables as well as splitters and ULNAs.

That throwing stick stunt of yours has boomeranged on us.
This is my current motherboard:
P8H77-M/CSM LGA 1155 H77 mATX Intel Motherboard

I have two 8gig strips of ddr3-1600 memory. I am a little confused about what, if any, other options I have for better or faster ram.

I mean if you're getting crazy performance from just the card upgrade, why waste cash on the rest.

Well, it is still not solid 60 in everything. Doom is above 150 FPS. GTA5 is nearly 60 at 1500p downsampled. Witcher is almost perfect. Tomb Raider seems to be struggling though. While 1 game might be just not perfectly optimized, I still think I better get rid of all the bottlenecks.

I could have gone way cheaper with like 6500 and H170 MB and slower RAM, but I decided to go full throttle this time and then not worry of upgrades for the next 2-3 (maybe more) years.

Edit: Oh, and WoW still runs like shit :p I guess it's just too old for newer hardware.

I have a question about fans. My case currently has two but I don't think my cpu temp monitor picks them up, because I believe if I remember correctly they are directly plugged into the psu not the cpu.....

does this matter at all? not being able to monitor or control those fans (they have a manual dial control on case).

also the case is huge with a ton of airspace but lets say I OC a gpu in the future, is it worth putting in two more case fans for the minimal cost they are? say another two for top, bottom? the current two are front/back.

and if I add those should I somehow monitor them or if your airflow feels super cool all the time (like mine currently does) is it usually okay? can you just set them to a set level manually and then monitor your cpu/gpu temperature with them pre-set? would that be recommended?

I built my first PC last week and this part just stumped me! It took me a while to decipher the manual and how to attach the cables. Even googling which cable was positive and negative gave me contradictory answers, but I managed to get it right in the end.

Edit: also on that note, I'm really loving my gaming PC. A build with a GTX 1070. Mind you I have never owned a gaming PC and I am just in awe with the image quality. It's so amazing, and I had a lot of fun building it despite some frustrations. I learned so much doing it myself.

Switches dont have polarity.
If the LED jumpers are installed with incorrect polarity, it simply wont work till you switch it over. Not a major problem if you get it wrong.

Also had some problems dealing with cable management and cooler installation.

Guys I bought an X1 elite pad, some interesting info:
You can't buy spares (padel's/dpad/joysticks) without registering an X1 console as this is the only way to register the controller afaik.
So I talked to support and got this info for the UK:
For the Dpads it would cost around 7.61 GBP, Paddles 11.41 GBP and Thumbsticks 15.22 GBP excluding the taxes yet. Shipping covered.

Pretty neat, now we can buy a new set of joysticks when the grips wear out.

Starting to further overclock my EVGA SC 1070. Up to 2100MHz peak core clock and 4300 memory. 3209 Unigen Heaven score.

I have no idea what I'm doing, lol. I should probably stop. Can't boost the core clock any higher, getting artifacts. Memory seems willing to go higher though.

Just keep going whilst temps are in control and you aren't seeing artefacts. Nothing you do here could damage the card as long as temps are not out of control.

Temps are going shockingly well. Topped out at 61c, and I don't even have any intake fans in my case (waiting on those to come in). Why not, let's see how high I can go.

You checked out the skull canyon nuc? not sure the price tho.

oh wow that looks really nice. It's uhh, more than I want to spend though given it's $650 for what looks like just case/mb/power. I think I could probably just build a better gaming PC than my current and use the old one for media at that price.

With the Dells I was hoping I could swap in an SSD for a primary drive and add a video card if needed (though probably not with the case size.)

Alright, tapping out at 2100 core clock and 4704 memory. Couldn't get a stable bench at anything higher. Temps stayed >61c, even under full load. Apparently Afterburner can't change Pascal card voltage yet, so I'll just leave it be. Not too bad.

I have a question. I was a console guy since the NES, but i am thinking about to get an awesome PC since a few years. I just love the idea of playing current and upcoming games, maxed out and in 1080p + 60fps.
I can live with 30fps, but i was thinking "man, i would love to lower the visual settings in exchange for 60fps" so many times. But yeah, there is no choice on consoles.

I'm thinking about selling all my sealed Collector's Editions, which would make me like 1100€ to 1300€.

Would that be enough to build a good PC, where i can play every game with the best graphics setting, in 1080p/60fps? Games like Witcher 3,Crysis 3,GTA 5, or other upcoming AAA games with super good visuals.

Not sure if this is the right thread for these questions but before I go out and spent upwards of $860 CDN pre-tax/shipping on a credit card I'd like to see if there is an easy solution to my problem.

On the weekend I had a lightning storm and it sounded as if one struck my outside antenna. WEll, my LTE internet radio was fried, router turns on but won't broadcast signal, and my computer won't turn on but theres an orange light on the motherboard when I turn on the PSU.

I tried the PSU test - paper clip in green and black - and I didn't bother unplugging the PSU from everything (didnt turn on, figured cant hurt it anymore lol)and it all lit up/came on as if it was booted up.
Tried a screwdriver to the headers of the cases power but nothing happened,

Is this just a case issue or are the power headers fried? I don't really have $800-ish but I can't be without a computer either. Spending $300-ish for a "for now" computer, or to fix my piece of crap up, doesn't seem worth it either.

I've been building PCs since 1994 and I have never had a mainboard with such a readable, easy to understand front pannel connector. Stop complaining, a 12 year old could assemble that, all you need to do is read what it says below the pins. Even an illiterate could hook that up by color matching.

Alright, so in the event I can't figure out what's up with my PC. Though I may try to find a cheap AM2+ motherboard first, but how does the below sound? Is there anyway to get it cheaper without losing performance? I want this to last more than a couple years. I plan to eventually get a 980 TI or a 1080 for it. (unless the 1070 is better than a 980 Ti?)

CPU: Intel Core i7-6700K 4.0GHz
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO
Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-Z170-HD3 LGA 1151 Intel Z170
Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3000 Memory
Storage: Western Digital Blue 2TB 3.5" 5400RPM WD20EZRZ

And I'm hoping I can reuse my PSU, GPU, and case. I imagine they should be okay. Should run me about $826 CDN before tax and shipping according to newegg.ca.

Two questions:
1. would there be any benefit to using my 500 GB HDD as the windows drive and this for general storage? Similar to a SSD set up just wouldnt cost me money I dont currently have. lol
2. Should I stick with my CPU above or go with a Intel Core i5-6600K and save $125? Do I still need the Cooler if I do swap?

What are you using this system for?

Alright I have another question. I got a new motherboard, ASUS Maximus Hero. The PC starts but all I get is a blue screen. According to the Mobo Q- code LED there is a memory incompatibility. I have 3000 MHz RAM in the system right now but apparently it's incompatible. Yet when I look at the box it states that it can handle RAM at that frequency so what's the problem?

Does it POST at all? Can you get into the BIOS? Your VRAM may require above standard voltage and the mainboard may not be detecting this.

Can you explain what this means? What does POST mean? As for the BIOS all I see is a blue screen saying 'No Signal' when on the selected input.

OK, you are basically getting absolutely no vide output from the computer.

If the LED indicator is correct in identifying ram issues, please try plugging your high speed RAM modules into the A2/B2 DIMM slots instead of the A1/B1 (the grey ones, not black). If that fails, try them one by one in the A2 and B2 slots and see if you can get into BIOS.

If that fails, please try the following dummy checks: Are you using an integrated GU or an add-on board? Have you double checked that the monitor is correctly connected? Have you tried reseating the Video Card? Have you doublechecked that the videocard's external power molex is securely connected? Have you checked that your PSU is rated sufficiently for your Video Card?

Hi guys,

One tech question, are these readings normal for a 3000mhz RAM?

FxnqeZp.png
MXzUxfb.png

They default to 2133, so to run at 3000 you need to turn XMP on in the Bios or set it manually to the correct speed. XMP will do that automatically and you should be good to go if you are lucky but if you find your PC doesn't post after you do that, you might need to tweak some voltage settings in the Bios.

I have 16GB Corsair Dominator Platinum 3000 DDR4 RAM and when I turned on XMP, my PC wouldn't boot up with it on, so I had to put the RAM Voltage up from 1.350v to 1.376v and then it booted up just fine.

My i7 6700k is overclocked to 4.6GHz (1.363v) I've read that you might need to OC your CPU to get the RAM running at that speed too, but not sure how correct that is.

OK, so it isn't as simple as i thought. I activated XMP profile1 and when i reset the computer a error came up saying i didn't have the proper configuration.

Yeah you might need to tweak the voltage for the RAM, try turning up the RAM voltage up a little bit and try again. XMP should set it to 1.350v so try it at 1.355 or 1.360 and try to boot again, just add a little bit of voltage each time, mine booted at 1.376v

Also is your CPU overclocked or standard ?

Standard. It's a 6600k.

Ok well try the voltage first, and see if it boots.

Skylake only supports 2133 RAM officially, so running 3000 RAM is classed as an overclock but I have heard people say you might need to bump the CPU Speed up too. Try the voltage first though and see how you get on.
