Hey guys, it's dream build time!

Not for me, but a friend. He wants to buy parts for the ultimate gaming PC. He will also use it for day trading, music production, and video editing. Has already ordered two ASUS PG348Q monitors and Pascal Titan X. Everything else still up for debate.

When I asked him about budget, he said he doesn't have one so go crazy. Obviously more expensive stuff should have some merit, not stupid shit like diamond encrusted ram modules.

But for reference, this is a guy who got bored of his 2016 Lamborghini Huracan after 3 months and traded it for a 2016 Porsche GT3RS because he wanted to go racing on the track with me.

I mean, if money is of little consequence in this build and heck, I could go even higher.. :p

I threw a Corsair 900D case, but check out the be quiet Dark Base Pro 900 case for an interesting alternative.

Also, I'm not familiar with sound cards, so maybe someone else more knowledgeable can help out with that.

If their friend's going for mass SSD storage, Samsung recently released a 4TB SSD that goes for less than 2 2TB combined so unless theyu plan on performing some RAID configuration on them, I believe that would save them a bit of money, unless they're willing to wait for the supposed $500 4TB Mushkin SSD coming out soon-ish(?).

Unrelated note: For anyone looking for a wireless mouse, i'd highly recommend the Logitech MX Master. Works beautifully from browsing to to editing to gaming.

That should be better. Make sure to add a bit in there for the person who builds it. Don't forget to tip your system builder!

Edit: Forgot that Nvidia did the brilliant move of naming the new Titan X...Titan X! Pascal version of the block is still not out yet. You'd have to wait for the block to be released just to be safe.

Custom water cooling is out of my area of expertise, so I'm glad someone came in to recommend it.
You really shouldn't even be building it at that point. You look for a system builder and just tell the system builder more or less your wants and needs and it gets done. And you trust that the guy will give you either suggestions or pick what's best for you.
That's why you tip 15-25%.
This is especially true for someone who apparently flips supercars after 3 months of use.

Tell him to call this guy.

One of the finest builders in the world.

I'm trying to clone my OS partition from my old HDD to my new SSD. The SSD has more space than the partition. I would like to keep all the space of the new SSD without partitioning it. The SSD is 250 GB and the partition is 165 GB. I can't see to find the right software or maybe I'm not using it right. I've tried Macrium Reflect and EaseUS.

Try out Clonezilla.
I think that's actually what you want if I'm understanding right?

I think the last time I tried it was when I went from z68 to x99. I was shocked by the fact that the system still booted and had no issues even after a complete system upgrade.

You said high budget. That being said, I think it will be pretty hard to beat this setup.

Walk through of decisions:

- CPU: Your buddy doesn't need the 6950X. Nobody does. The 6900K balances cores and clocks better. Average performance across all applications will be better than the 6950X.
- Cooler: You will have to wait until it is in stock, but this will keep his CPU nice and cool. Some assembly is required but I would much rather go this route than something from Corsair. If you want something with less fuss, go with the Swiftech H320 X2 Prestige.
- Motherboard: Probably one of the most reliable and tested motherboards out there. PCIE layout will enable SLI Titans, dual PCIE M.2, a sound card AND a network card if desired.
- RAM: Doesn't matter that much. 32GB should be enough. He can add another 32GB set if he needs it.
- Storage: Thinking for the storage is as follows... Dual SM961 1TB in raid 0 (ha ha what 4K buffering?), 2 2tb 850 evos for quick mass storage, and 2 HGST 6tbs in raid 1 for mass storage. All that with an external HDD for local backup of everything.
- Case: If your buddy likes nice things, the In Win 909 is a nice thing. Ignore the incompatibility notice, the Asus WS X99 is compatible. This case has high airflow and ample space for drive storage (as configured).
- PSU: Overkill, as standard with PSUs.
- Case fans: Noctua for the main cavity (also chosen b/c they are reliable), EK Vardars for push/pull on the AIO kit. This should ensure positive pressure and ample airflow and 24/7 low fan speed.
- Other: Anglebird PX1 is the M.2 PCIE adapter. Swiftech fan hub is for the fans...

Ok, so, I need a new PSU ASAP. I bought an EVGA GTX 1070 FTW but found out when installing it my PSU only has 2 6 pin PCI-e connectors instead of the needed 2 8 pin. My mistake, I thought my PSU was better.

My only option locally is Best Buy. I'd rather get it there because I don't want to waste this weekend but I'm guessing I won't have much of a choice and I'll have to go to Amazon or something. I had a Corsair hx650 and it worked well. In my haste I ran out and bought a Corsair cx750m. It looked pretty good and still had a high rating with tons of reviews. But when back got home I decided to randomly Google it again and somehow find a bunch of nasty info about it. Now I don't want to install it for fear it'll fry my system in a few months. Yeah I'm paranoid but I can't afford that.

Can't you just get an adapter? Your card might even have had one

Nope. The FTW version requires 2 8 pins to the card. The adapter included requires 4 6 pins. I'm two short. :(

Looking at the OP I'm going to order either the EVGA 650 GQ or 750 GQ. I can get either delivered on Sunday from Amazon, so my weekend won't be a complete waste. I only have 2 hours to order though. I'm probably going to get the 750 so I can use this in a future CPU/MB upgrade too unless someone can convince me otherwise in the next hour. If 750 would be a waste of something.

Does anyone have tips on how to move a pc and a monitor across the country (from WA to VA)? I'm flying so just putting it in a car isn't an option for me. Seems like my best bet is taking out some components and shipping it separately, but was wondering if anyone's done it before and had any thoughts.

I am losing the will to live.

Purchased and received my Rift and plugged it into the USB 3.0 ports on my Z170-A which the tool said were compatible. Everything worked but when playing Lucky's Tale the camera went all skewed and the sensor had a warning message saying it wasn't detected properly etc.

I updated the USB drivers on the Asus site etc.

Changed ports, everything worked fine then the same happened. Changed to put the sensor in the USB 3.1 port and that seemed to sort the issues.

In the meantime I'd ordered this - https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00B6ZCNGM/ref=yo_ii_img?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I installed it and was unable to get drivers off their support site for some reason. But when I plugged the Rift in it was recognised but then I started to get the same tracking issues I had at the start!

Going mad...any suggestions?!
Those USB 3 cards require more power than the PCIe slot can deliver. Did you use the included cables to power the 15 pin SATA Power Connector?

750 ordered. So glad Amazon delivers on Sunday.

I just tried to play my first 4K game(48" Samsung SUHD 4K TV). The font, UI, etc... is all tiny and unreadable. Is their some kind of tweak to make games running at 4K readable(Other then scaling it to down to 1440p)? Or is this how 4K games suppose to look like?

Most games you can adjust your UI, plus how far away are you sitting from your TV? A 48" TV you should be about 5-7 feet from it.

I'm around 5 ft away. It doesn't help when the font is tiny and having to be smack up against the tv to read it.

The game is a bit older (2009), it doesn't have UI scale.

My braided PSU extension cables have arrived, very nice quality. Wasn't sure which brand to go for at first but reviews were good and they didn't cost as much as CableMod cables. Seems I made the right choice, very happy with the quality of these.

They should finish off the look of the PC much better than the standard black and yellow cables on the PSU. Will update pic when installed.

By the way, how do you guys handle gpu sagging? Do you just leave it be?

My msi 980ti sags a little bit. Right now I just put a band around the pcie connector and slightly pull it to one of my hdd cage lol

Does it have a backplate ? Heard that can help with sagging a little bit.

Hm, PC just blackscreened after three hours of GTAV and either GPU/CPU fans (or both) sped up to 100% (1080 FTW, 4790k) .

I haven't monitored temps but they have never been an issue for me before. Kinda weird, my MDPS and rain meter didn't boot with Windows either and steam lost all client side settings (screenshot settings etc).

Anyone had this before? It clearly sounds like a temp problem due to the fans and the screens losing signal points to the GPU.

I'll check my precision X settings later, maybe the Win10 anniversary update deleted my custom fan curve and the fans didn't spin up or sth.

Ughhh, I just hope the card isn't broken already <_<

By the way, how do you guys handle gpu sagging? Do you just leave it be?

My msi 980ti sags a little bit. Right now I just put a band around the pcie connector and slightly pull it to one of my hdd cage lol

I built a makeshift stand from Lego and it works really. I have a xtreme gaming 980ti and its a very hefty card. Not sure about hurting the PCB but visually it annoys me.

Okay guys looking to buy a PSU. I want to spend between £40-50 but unfortunately that range is really saturated. Now I have looked at the Corsair CX series and it seems to be getting solid reviews all-round, meanwhile I have been avoiding the EVGA W series which seems to be getting a poor reception.

However both roughly cost the same here in the UK so how should I go about picking one.

Is the rx 460 expected to be a decent 4k HTPC and light gaming card or is there something better in the ~$100 price range?

Should be good for that. Nvidia hasn't released an updated Pascal part in that price range (AFAIK), so this should be a decent pick for that range at release. The RX 470 is roughly double the gaming performance at an increased price.

But when bbc.co i got home I decided to randomly Google it again and somehow find a bunch of nasty info about it. Now I don't want to install it for fear it'll fry my system in a few months. Yeah I'm paranoid but I can't afford that.
Best Buy sells PSUs and price matches Amazon. You could just go there.

There's no need to correct it unless the unevenness is visually bothersome. It's not going to harm the PCB in any way.

Does it have a backplate ? Heard that can help with sagging a little bit.

cheers guys, it just bugs me a little XD. It's not really badly sagging, so it's okay I suppose.
And it's the gaming 6g, so it does have a backplate, not that it helps much though haha

There's support brackets that you can use. They get installed on the case expansion slot below the GPU and support the weight. They're kinda expensive at $30-$40 and add an extra element to the visuals that wasn't there. Look them up and see if you like them.

That's where I was, and what I did, but their selection locally was terrible. I did buy one but decided I didn't want to put something I was reading online as bargain basement quality in my PC. I can't afford to have my PC go because of a poor quality PSU.

So I just bought one on Amazon based on the recommendations in the OP. Sunday delivery gets it to me while it's still the weekend. I'm gonna return the one from Best Buy later today.

Thanks everyone. Ordered my EVGA G2 650 psu and it will be here Tuesday. Just waiting on the rest of my retro stuff to sell off then it's a Ultrawide Monitor and a new desk as well.

It looks like I should buy a 1440p monitor with G-Sync and forget about 4K until games are scaled better.

Double the performance but around double the expected price. My gaming rig is still going strong enough with my 290x, I just need low cost and low energy consumption 4k output. Other Polaris cards have HDMI 2.0 and HDR output, so it would stand to reason that the 460 should have them too.

A 6TB Red drive isn't showing up in my OS, nor Disk Management but shows up in BIOs....

what do?

edit:
no idea how but it fixed itself

My braided PSU extension cables have arrived, very nice quality. Wasn't sure which brand to go for at first but reviews were good and they didn't cost as much as CableMod cables. Seems I made the right choice, very happy with the quality of these.

They should finish off the look of the PC much better than the standard black and yellow cables on the PSU. Will update pic when installed.

I wanted to buy the exact wires, can you link me to exactly where you got that please?

Man, the 6800K sucks for overclocking. Can't even get this thing to 4.0 without it roasting.

When I had my 2500K I was able to OC that to 4.5 without even messing with the voltage...

So, I posted earlier about my ssd possibly dying here

Is anybody familiar with smart details. These are for my crucial ssd.
16636 reported uncorrectable errors seems really high. My other intel ssd has 0 for that attribute. That's definitely a problem isn't it?

Even for Broadwell-E that's low. 4.2/4.3 should be doable with a good cooler, but unless you've a particularly good chip or a custom water cooling setup, you'll need to be happy with load temps in the 70s or thereabouts. I've a 6800K myself and with a customised Corsair H110 (Noctua NF-A14s in place of the stock fans) my load temps sit in the low 70s at 4.3GHz and 1.344v (4.4GHz isn't even remotely stable until I push the voltage beyond 1.38v, which results in too much heat).

Edit: If you're using Prime95 to hit 100% load, ensure you're not using a version beyond 26.6. Newer versions include AVX in their stress tests and this bumps up load temps by no small margin -- around 30 degrees in my case. It's recommended to use an older version as you're unlikely to ever find yourself in a real-world situation where your processor has a comparable load.

Is it better to get an M.2 SSD now or should I wait for prices to go lower?

I'll be going to the shops later to buy the final parts (PSU and gfx card) for my build and thought would it be worth the extra money to get a 256GB M.2 SSD. Also, once I start the build without the M.2, there will be no easy way of installing it later. I already got a Samsung EVO 850 SATA SSD. Is it really a huge upgrade?

From what i've read, the Samsung 950 Pro of that size is worth picking up for its blistering speed so if you're looking for a very fast drive to boot your system up, this is it for now. Unless you're willing to wait a while for SSD prices to become far more affordable/GB, you're out of luck, not unless that supposed 4TB for $500 USD Mushkin SSD ever happens and is able to bring down the competition's prices

If you already have an 850 evo and don't need more space I would hold out for now. Unless you have a specific use case/need (e.g. video editing or something).

Alright, I guess I'll be holding out for now. I saw the Samsung 950 a few days back and was surprised at the price. Thanks for the tip.

Got a GTX 1070 on the way, will there be any real bottleneck with a i5-2500k @4.2Ghz and 8GB of DDR3 RAM? Looking to see what I should focus on upgrading next, my motherboard is getting a little dated (ASRock z68 Extreme3 Gen3) and only supports PCI-e 2.0 but the 1070 is 3.0, that shouldn't cause a problem right?
