If money isnt an issue, should i go with 6700k or 6800k? Every benchmarks is telling me the 6700k has higher fps than 6800k in games. Will 6 cores even matter 2-4 years from now?

In 4 years you'll probably want to upgrade. The 6700k is apparently a better overclocker and performs just as well in most applications so I would save the cash and go with that.

New build:

Intel Core i5 6600K
Gigabyte - GA-Z170-HD3
Kingston 16GB (2133MHz) DDR4
Samsung 500GB SSD, 850 EVO Series
Fractal Design Define S
EVGA 650W SuperNOVA G1

I'm assuming that's fine, practically just copied it from the OP. Should last me ages once I stick my 1070 into as well.

So, the 6600K/6700K are exactly one year old today, is it time yet to start waiting for the next revision instead of buying now?

Which version of the case is that? I agonized over the smallest version for SO long but I didn't want to pay the $$$ for it. It looks SO nice though.

It's the O7. It's really big in person.. but the slimness makes it look so good. I still haven't checked to see if the glass survived the shipping. I think I'll check right now.

Edit: It's in one piece.

Got a couple of questions.

This is the old set up but it's a pretty good example of how the system is more or less.
Big change is that there's now a Fury X in there. The red cables, psu and that loose bottom fan are gone too.

The Fury X's rad is currently mounted on the bottom. I heard this is bad? How bad are we talking about? Because my next best option is to move it to the top rightmost slot by flipping the h100i rad around (and covering the block's LED which is a shame).

Also, I've been using a single 6+2x2 PCI-E cable from the PSU to power the Fury. Haven't had much in terms of issues but I haven't exactly used it all that much. Is it better to use two separate 6+2 cables instead?

Not familiar enough with PSUs to be able to help but can't help but ask too - what is that underneath the 970?

As long as your temps are ok, I see nothing wrong where you put the rad. Also one pci-e cable with two connectors is fine, that's why there are two connectors on it.

Just got semi-done (where, oh where are my non-reference 480s :((((?) doing a modest, "Paradox and occasional Total War" build for my little brother for his birthday and wow the Thermaltake V21 is amazingly fun to work on. I would highly recommend it for people doing more extreme builds but want a micro ATX/itx board, because your thermal options are nigh unlimited on this thing. Only drawback for some might be a lack of ODD slot, but in this day and age that seems rather beside the point.

Awesome. Thanks.

I think I saw a picture of some AMD engineer with like 4 furys and one of them was bottom mounted. So I really wasn't sure about the rad. I'll keep an eye on the temps then. The cable thing is me being super careful about it. I haven't had a card this power hungry and hot (not really since it's water cooled) since the days of Fermi.

Up your ram to 16GB at minimum. Never heard of the power supply, but you should get at least a 550W unit. You don't need a cpu cooler, the retail non-k cpu's come with one. As for the motherboard, someone else will have to tell you on that, I don't like MSI. What I read on it on their website, it should be fine though. If it were me, I'd go with a board from Asus, Gigabyte or Asrock.

Can someone assist me with a RAM query? I have 8GB of RAM atm and am looking to replace this with 2x8GB RAM. looking at the following link

http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4518#sp

I'm a bit confused about what speed I should go for. My ram is currently DDR3 1600 but it seems my board has support for higher but only (OC). What does this mean?

Means that you can get DDR3 that's advertised as being able to run at any of the listed speeds and enable XMP in your BIOS to run it that way. (This for example)

Rounding up the last bit of parts I need, and was going to use a Jet.com code from a physical mailer they sent me-- 20% off. Looking at the Team Vulcan 8GBx2 DDR4 RAM. 50 shipped, but then I add a second pair and after the 20% and multi quantity discount, it's only 46 dollars. LOL, I know I don't need 32GB but it's too tempting to not get it for that cost

Are the 480 non-ref worth waiting for?

Like, I'm sitting on this complete build for my brother waiting on an 8-pin 480 and it's just killing me that I can put a 1060 in this sooner. I got burned /badly/ on a 780ti and never really want to buy an nvidia card again. Am I being irrational, gaf?

EDIT: Like, I want this build for him to be a long term thing, and with AMD perf being the way it is I want him to have a build that'll at least /play/ total war games for a while decently. Like I love the fuck out of him and want /more/ long term out of the card I buy him. 480 perf and my history with AMD (par OGL shenanigans) has been much better than Nvidia. I'm just really fucking scared I buy him a lemon and he's burned for good on PC gaming, because he really loves his strat games. I've built every PC for him, but he's recently getting ready to move out of state for a job so this is the last chance I have to get it right for him. I just really want this build to be awesome for him. Sorry for the rantish post, but man, this is personal for me and I just really want this to work.

If you are fine with being 2 years behind in tech then sure thats fine.

After spending 2 1/2 months in Korea with their fast internet and pretty great PC bangs and coming back home, I realize I cannot play Overwatch. Like, at all. Everything is on low settings and the framerate goes from 70 to 10 whenever I see an enemy. So seeing this thread pop up is really great for me.

Anyway, posting to subscribe but also: how much would a better than average to great PC cost? Would building my own be better, or just buying a standard gaming PC/laptop? I'm looking for a PC/laptop that can run great, and I'm also looking to start streaming. Preferably a PC unless it costs an extreme amount. My budget is around $1,000.

Sorry if these questions have been answered. I've been a console gamer my whole life (with the exception of WoW) so this whole PC thing makes no sense to me. If they have been answered, I'll try to read through the OP again, but all the PC talk is confusing haha.

If you already have monitor then you can get very good pc for under 1000$
It would be recommended to get 144hz screen tho if you get good pc too.

Give it a massage!

No luck :(

Man, so fucking disappointed. I always have problems with a monitor out-of-the-box, notoriously so. First time I have almost no issues and bam; few months later it develops a dull LED. And I've never had a monitor accumulate pixel issues.

Your best bet would be to choose your parts yourself (my advice would be to base your choices on one of the builds in the OP) and have the rig built for you. If you've got a decent monitor already, $1000 will get you a pretty damn good PC. If you're buying the monitor as well, that's another story depending on which one you choose.

Intel Core i5 6600K

I just built something similar with a 6600k and 1070, and it is quite literally overkill at 1080p. Shouldn't need to upgrade for a while unless I up my display game and go higher resolution or refresh.

PC GAF, some questions.

My HTPC System is running on a AMD 780G mainboard, Athlon II X4 640 CPU in a slim mATX horizontal case. I'm not very happy with the thermals and acoustics. I'm considering moving to a regular ATX horizontal case, so I need some advice on the following:

1. Cheap horizontal mATX case that will accept full size VGA cards
2. Would replacing my current CPU and IGP with an AM1/FM1-2 APU help with temperatures, acoustics and cooling? If so, is the Athlon 5350 still the goto CPU for HTPC builds, or am I better with something from the A lineup?
3. This switch (2) would require replacing my DDR2 with DDR3.. Would it really be worth it?

On a completely unrelated note,

4. I need a cheap but decent (emphasis on decent, I don't need a solid, great, wonderful, awesome, brilliant) PSU to power my overclocked FX + RX 480 system. Recommendations would be great.

Nobody? :(

Just wondering if someone can give me advice. I am just in the process of deciding on parts for my first pc. I am currently looking at the ASUS Z170 mobo and while recently checking pictures of it, I noticed that it has 4 USB 3.0 ports on it. So am I wasting money on a pc case that already has usb ports on the front of it, or am I able to connect the USB ports on the case to this particular mobo??

Thank you heaps guys, and thanks to others who have helped. Now to just monitor over the next few days and see how it goes. I might push for 4.5-4.6GHz in a year or so but for now 4.4GHz does the job.

how did your overclocking go? what voltage you at for 4.4Ghz? as for your temps 26-32 seems fine. what cooler are you using and do you know your ambient temps? my i7-6700K with a 212X is currently sitting at 22-24C while browsing with chrome/streaming spotify. if you are seeing high temps at normal usage make sure you aren't forcing a constant voltage to your CPU. should be able to change it in the BIOS.

most cases these days have USB ports on the front panel. i wouldn't necessarily say you're wasting money on a case that has ports on the front. it's just really a personal choice. there is a USB header cable in the case that connects to your motherboard. my motherboard has 4x3.0 ports and my case has 2 on the front panel. i personally prefer having the ports on the front of my case just because it's easier to stick drives in. the only usb ports i use on my motherboard are for my mouse/keyboard.

Kabylake is the next set of CPU's from intel which is actually already been sent to manufacturers/OEM but is due out later this year for consumers as far as I can tell. Cannon Lake will be in 2017 and mark their move to 10nm process.

Well, Kabylake has already be launched in July so I assumed he was talking about the next generation.

yeah but it's not available for consumers. you can't buy an i5-7600K or an i7-7700K right now.

no problem! what case are you going to get?

Anyone know when the next line of Intel CPUs will be released?

Still no word on Kaby Lake yet, but there might be more news on it at IDF (Intel Developer Forum) which is sometime this month apparently, but if they don't release it soon, it looks like it might be early 2017 when we see new Intel chips.

Kaby Lake is only a small upgrade over Skylake anyway, Cannonlake will be a bit of a bigger step up over Skylake, so if you looking to build a new PC or upgrade, I'd just go Skylake now or wait until next year for Cannonlake.

The one I have been looking at is the Antec GX200. I am going to keep shopping around though as the case has been kind off been put towards the back of the list put and has probably had the least research by me as I have been mainly focusing on the more expensive parts. Any recommendations on a case with a budget of around €60?

I am losing the will to live.

Purchased and received my Rift and plugged it into the USB 3.0 ports on my Z170-A which the tool said were compatible. Everything worked but when playing Lucky's Tale the camera went all skewed and the sensor had a warning message saying it wasn't detected properly etc.

I updated the USB drivers on the Asus site etc.

Changed ports, everything worked fine then the same happened. Changed to put the sensor in the USB 3.1 port and that seemed to sort the issues.

In the meantime I'd ordered this - https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00B6ZCNGM/ref=yo_ii_img?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I installed it and was unable to get drivers off their support site for some reason. But when I plugged the Rift in it was recognised but then I started to get the same tracking issues I had at the start!

Going mad...any suggestions?!

Never heard of ITX and liquid cooling going together really. ITX cases are super small and not much room for much other than a low profile air cooler. Unless you are putting that small motherboard in a large case, which kinda defeats the purpose of getting an ITX motherboard.

So before you go out and buy a case, what is the reason you went ITX?

I guess my main reason is I wanted the form-factor of ITX builds (at least the ones I saw online). I've checked pcpartpicker's completed builds and I based my build there.

ITX boards only recommend liquid cooling because the CPU heatsink on liquid cooling setups are usually small/low profile which will allow them to fit in a smaller case. Make damn sure the case you are getting will support the liquid cooling radiator size. If you can afford it, I'd suggest the NCASE M1. It'll fit a 240mm radiator for watercooling.

I went ITX as well for my build, but it's in a Bitfenix Prodigy case, which is quite large by ITX standards & I am using a Noctua NH-D15 cooler, which is MASSIVE. And it fits fine in the case.

Also keep in mind that many ITX cases won't fit a full-sized ATX PSU either. I bought a "short" ATX PSU (which actually conforms to the standard, as opposed to most ATX PSUs which are larger), but SFX form factor PSU is also an option.

As mentioned above, I've been constantly checking with pcpartpicker for compatible parts. For the PSU, I'm getting the Corsair RM550x which I believe will fit the Phanteks Evolv ITX. Its not the smallest ITX case around, but just enough for this build. I will probably get the H100i later since its the most common liquid cooling solution here.

Edit: My main concern will probably fitting the ram sticks with that EVO cooler. I hope it won't be a problem.
