So here's a strange one. Was having problems with XMP and my Corsair Dominator Platinum 3000MHz RAM. It refused to boot with XMP on, I thought I had finally fixed it but apparently not, tweaking SA and IO voltage helped a bit but still got a few crashes after a while and with a lot of people having the same issue, it seems like Z170 boards can be very picky with 3000MHz RAM and XMP.

So I got reading lots of forums and noticed not many people having problems with 3200MHz RAM, so with nothing to lose I turned on XMP but changed the RAM frequency to 3200MHz manually and it booted first time, no problems at all, so it seems my RAM is happy to run overclocked rather than the speed its supposed to, not that I'm complaining though lol.

Got a bit more testing to do but it already seems way more stable, with no crashes since I made the change and no more boot up problems. Might be worth trying for anyone else with this problem, if you are stuck.

Hey guys, I think my PSU has died? Cross posting from steam thread

http://m.neogaf.com/showpost.php?p=212785818

Its 2 years old, a Corsair 650W supply (can't remember exact type)
My setup is i7 4790k
Gtx 970
16gb RAM

Is your PSU the CX line? I had the same-ish PSU a while back and it's not really a good PSU for gaming.

I also had an ASUS mobo which has this anti-surge protection thing that I turned off in the BIOS because it's too sensitive to fluctuations that it shut downs every now and then and shows that error.

Combine both and I had to buy a new PSU because the CX line just cant. The mobo still do that anti surge thing with my bronze silverstone psu but it does rarely so i turned that off before it sends me to low prio hell in DOTA 2 Lol.

Is there a significant advantage to a 1070 over a 1060, especially with performance related to VR (specifically Oculus Rift)? I'm wondering how much additional performance is coming out of that price difference, especially if it makes a difference at the resolution and refresh rate of the OR consumer version.

I dont know what the exact difference is, but in VR, the more the better. The ability with oculus to increase the pixel density and maintain a 90fps performance is huge in terms of the clarity and the perception you get, especially in faster games like Dirt Rally. In my 1080 ive been bouncing back and forth between 1.8 and 2.0 pixel density (effectively doubling each screens resolution) and there is a noticeable difference in the clarity of the image. With VR, you might get a useable solution with the lowest end cards but to get what I consider a quality experience you need power

so I have a brand new hyper 212. it's perfectly seated on the process for the past few months but all of a sudden it makes this rattling noise, like a sound when a cable is in the fan. if i press on the fan sound goes away but once i let go, it comes back. what can i do?

I need some help. I'm planning a new build and trying to find the right motherboard is killing me. I have been running an asus board for about five years and other than it recently dying, was happy with the experience. I started researching z170 boards, as I'll be getting a i7-6700k but I found very poor reviews for the asus boards. It's to be expected with tech items but apparently the asus boards have a bunch of issues and I'm not sure if they've been addressed yet.

So I moved my attention towards the Gigabyte Gaming 7 mobo. It seems like it has better features than the asus boards that I'm seeing however the reviews are pretty harsh for this mobo saying that there is some weird sound buzz issue. Not all people have reported it in their reviews so it seems like I'd have to just take a risk.

One of the main things I like about the gaming 7 board is that it has two m.2 connectors which could come in handy later down the line. It also has a ton of usb 3.0 ports on the back and supposedly superior sound. Anyone have any opinions on asus vs gigabyte or the gaming 7 board in general? It seems like the people who don't have issues are loving it. I would have preferred to stick with asus but if the boards aren't great then I don't mind switching.

Sounds like the bearing is out in the fan, buy a new fan.

All this talk about cooling has me wondering as I just ordered an i5 6600K: How good is the CM 212 EVO that is recommended in the builds? Any problems with the fact I'm in Australia and we're only a few k's from the surface of the sun during Summer? Could you even consider mild overclocking without going water cooling?
I would like an answer to this too.

I have an i7-6700k in the Gigabyte Gaming 5 (ITX version). Zero problems. Doesn't buzz, sound is really good, M.2 is super fast, Type-C USB, etc. I usually tend to check out Asus first myself but their ITX motherboards didn't have all the features I was looking for.

So, I don't quite know where else to pose this question, so here goes: I just bought a MSI nightblade (it's a pretty small case) with an i7 4970 and a GTX 970 in it. I was wondering if it's safe (or even worthwhile) to OC my GPU with afterburner, and to which point I should be pushing it.

Yes you can OC it.

I can help. I have an i5 6600k and the CM 212 EVO. I game in Melbourne. I actually OC'd on the weekend lol. Provided you follow the guides you shouldn't have an issue, it may be winter now but in a house with the heater on at like 23C, I didn't go past 69C in a 7 hour stress test. idle temps are normal at around 25-35C. and, when it gets hotter later this year you can always just turn the OC off or lower it to something that won't melt your PC.

I ordered my first mechanical keyboard, the Rosewill RK-9000v2 with Cherry MX Brown Switches off Newegg for $64.99. I was initially going with this keyboard, then almost pulled the trigger on a Ducky One. The Ducky might be the better keyboard, but for the price the Rosewill is a great deal. It arrives tomorrow!

Since I upgraded my keyboard (was using a Dell keyboard from 2004), any thoughts on mice? I have a Logitech G400 (actually a Logicool, since I bought it in Japan and Logitech had to change their name due to an existing company already owning the name Logitec) and it works really well for me. Anything similar in shape? I use a palm grip, and would prefer the same amount of buttons. I won't be upgrading for a while, but would like to do some early research for fun.

And please don't recommend the G502, that might be a good performing mouse but it looks terrible. I'd rather prefer something simple. How is the Steel Series Rival 300? Shape looks kinda similar when looking at pictures. I've also heard of the Zowie brand but know nothing about them.

Yeah G400 is good, no need to upgrade until it breaks.
Zowie is what everyone is hyping about being best mouse, it also have G400:is shape.
I think I would look at Zowie if I had to upgrade in near future.

Thanks! Yeah, my G400 is still going strong after 3 years. Will definitely look into a Zowie mouse if it ever breaks down. Which model of theirs is most similar to the G400?

Thanks for this. I needed some reassurance to talk myself out of getting an expensive cooler I likely won't need. I've never OC'd before and I mostly just want to mess around with it for fun; I don't think I'll really need it for a long while. I want to see if it helps emulation like PCSX2 though.

Hey!

Need a new PC for a friend. He'll be moving into a new apartment and would like a fairly capable 1080p machine.

Budget is 1000 EUR
Shop is www.alzashop.com

Need everything (not just the "case" but monitor, kb+m and some cheap 2.1 speakers, too).
I was thinking something around i5 6500 and Radeon 480. That seems like a solid machine that could fit the 1000 EUR budget. I think... :/
...anyone?

It's all a matter of winning the silicone lottery if you plan on overclocking. The EVGA FTW, ASUS Strix, Gigabyte G1, and ZOTAC AMP! are all popular. I ordered the EVGA FTW DT (which I guess isn't technically a real FTW) because it was cheaper at the time. I won't receive it until Tuesday but going by reviews they will easily OC to 2k. After that we're talking a few frames difference in cards. Just get what you want as far as features. I just like EVGA because their customer service is top notch.

Thank you for the information but i'm not familiar with overclocking so maybe something with best base performance?

Anyone using the Phanteks Enthoo Evolve ATX? Looks like a nice alternative to the R5 or Define S everyone under the sun has.

Planning on building a new PC soon. In a month's time will there be anything new or should I just start picking parts now?

Overclocking is pretty easy. Just watch a youtube video using msi afterburner. Get whatever card you want.

Not much changing. Go ahead and pick your parts and post them here using PcPartPicker if you want some advice.

I've got the ITX version. It's a bit cheaper build quality and missing a couple QoL features, but it's very thoughtfully designed and I absolutely love the aesthetic. The new ATX tempered glass one is preposterously good looking and has been popping up a lot on Reddit for enthusiast builds.

Reading up on broadway E stuff, sounds like a nightmare to deal with in overclocking. I want at least a 6 core that I can overclock to 4.0+ without any issues.

Is the hyper 212 EVO still the go to fan for air cooling? I might either end up with a 6700k or 5930k.

Grabbed an FX 8300 at half price as a semi upgrade to my FX 6100 now that I have an RX 480. Looking forward to overclocking that thing to 4.5GHz. Whee.

Really weird, the computer has started crashing when the xbox 1 controller turns itself off automatically, then when the computer restarts the driver has disabled in device manager..

Guess there must have been a windows update of some kind

My HDD seems to be breaking. It started to be at 100% all the time a week ago. I tried disabling superfetch, windows 10 tips etc. which dropped the disk use to single digits when not really doing anything with the computer. However, even when using chrome with 2 tabs, it seems to up the disk use to 50-60%.

I just did a reset of Windows 10 and it still is at 100% on a "clean" windows 10 at startup. The average latency is around 40ms which seems really high.
I did do chkdsk and seagate tool checks which did not find any problems. In games the load times are now really long with some bad stuttering.

Is the disk still dying or does anyone have a fix in mind?

If it is breaking, what is the best value for a hdd atm. I haven't kept up with SSD prices or hybrid ones. The current one is a Barracuda 7200rpm 1tb.

I don't know about nightmare, just don't expect a really high overclock 4.2 at 1.3V core is something every chip can hit.

Heat is manageable at 1.3V its when you get into 4.3-4.5 range your vcore jumps from 1.3 to 1.4-1.45 which is where the heat really starts to generate.

i have an i7-6700K at 4.5Ghz with a 212X. where i live it's quite cold all the time and definitely doesn't get as hot as it does in australia. my cpu can be anywhere between 19C-30C under normal usage (browsing internet/streaming music etc). in prime 95 blend test it didn't go over 76C. during gaming it is much lower than that at about 50-65C depending on the game,.

it's a good and cheap option for a basic overclock. if you're worried about your ambient temperature or wanting higher than 4.6Ghz i'd get an AIO or higher quality air cooler.

I am about to go ahead ordering parts for my first ever build. Can someone please look over my parts and see if they are ok. This is my very first build so I wanna be reassured that everything will work together and a second opinion on whether I should change anything.

Asus Z170 Pro Gaming
Intel Core i5 6600K
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1070
Arctic Freezer i32 Tower Cooler
250GB Samsung 750 Evo SSD
1000GB WD HDD
Asus BC-12D2HT Blu-ray Combo
Antec GX200 Case
RM650 Corsair PSU
16GB G.Skill DDR4-3400

Let's try this one more time GAF.. I want to replace my aging 500W PSU with a new one, preferably 500-600W, inexpensive, relatively silent. I don't need bells and whistles like RGB leds and whatnot, modularity is nice but not necessary. It will power an overclocked FX 8300 and RX480.

Looks good, even though you could save some money on RAM by getting DDR4-3000. Won't make that much of a difference. Which model 1070 are you getting?

Is it really true that powersupplies these days are not always silent?
My current is 7y old, always been SILENT, not 1 sound, and its been working all this time with no problems.

Im scared to buy new powersupply someday in future if I have to worry about it being silent... Where is this tech going.

Seasonic is probably the way to go if noise is of particular concern. The M12II-620 is only USD$80.

I was contemplating about the RAM and actually ended up increasing it as it was only €4 more expensive compared to the 3000 RAM. I am also going with the G1 gaming 1070.

How much real game performance difference is there between a reference GTX 1070 and a Gigabyte GTX 1070 G1? I have the opportunity to get a reference GTX 1070 today for about $25 cheaper than the Gigabyte model. If it's not much of a performance difference I might just get it.

For $25 extra it's a no brainer to get the G1, it's an excellent card with out of the box boosts and a much better cooling system.
