Seasonic is probably the way to go if noise is of particular concern. The M12II-620 is only USD$80.

M12 is kind of out of my cheapass budget range, would the S12 be a good alternative?

Also looking at some budget FPS PSUs that I know are of adequate builds.. Of the two one has two weak 12V rails, one has a single powerful 12V rail. Both are 80+%. Which should be a better pick?

Single rail would be the better pick. All Seasonics should be good.

Yeah, the S series is also a solid budget range.

A powerful single rail is ideal as it practically eliminates the possibility of being in a situation where you have a GPU that demands more than the rail can provide, but this is less of an issue these days.

I will likely never run a Crossfire setup, would getting a PSU over 500W be overkill?

My choices atm are:

FSP Hyper 500W (pretty cheap but solid)
FSP Hyper 700W (slightly more expensive)
Seasonic S12II-620 (same price as Hyper 700W)

Well my Ethernet port failed on my Z97 Asus board, so looking like I'll get a new Kaby Lake setup with the upcoming 200 series chipset. I can't see investing in X99 at this point in the life cycle. I have a HTPC that can soak up the RAM and 4790k CPU from this build, so it'll make a good gaming box at that point.

Anyone see any recent Kaby Lake rumors, desktop version? I recall seeing Q3 but that was a while ago, and it was unclear if it was desktop or mobile.

I want to get me a sdd for back up. Samsung the go to brand?
Yeah, or Crucial.
Thanks! Yeah, my G400 is still going strong after 3 years. Will definitely look into a Zowie mouse if it ever breaks down. Which model of theirs is most similar to the G400?
Probably the ZA or FK line.
Is it really true that powersupplies these days are not always silent?
My current is 7y old, always been SILENT, not 1 sound, and its been working all this time with no problems.

Im scared to buy new powersupply someday in future if I have to worry about it being silent... Where is this tech going.

?????

Lots of gold(maybe even lower) rated power supply's fans don't even turn on. My G2 psu from EVGA doesn't make a peep. Fan doesn't even turn on while gaming.

Is the ASUS PG279Q worth taking the plunge? It's such a sexy looking monitor, but seeing as how many people were having issues with it...

Hey PC GAF I'm going to start buying my parts this week but wanted to throw my build up for recommendations. My budget is a $1000 after tax and shipping.

Here's the build https://pcpartpicker.com/user/simplegamer344/saved/6gcQzy

Bumped your RAM to 2400mhz and 16gb, NZXT 210 case, 2x 120mm fans for the front, and 250gb Samsung SSD puts you just over budget.

Hi guys. I'm considering building the following PC:

CPU: Intel Core i5-6600 3.3GHz Quad-Core Processor
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 412S 52.6 CFM CPU Cooler
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-H170M-D3H Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard
Memory: G.Skill TridentZ Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3400 Memory
Storage: Samsung 850 EVO 250GB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
Video Card: MSI GeForce GTX 1070 8GB Video Card
Case: Cooler Master N200 MicroATX Mid Tower Case
Power Supply: Corsair Builder 600W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply

I chose the 6600 over the 6600k because I have no intention of overclocking. However I'm not sure about the following:
- Should I get an i7 6700 instead of the i5 6600?
- Will the 6600 bottleneck the 1070 @ 60Hz1080p?
- Regarding the GPU, is MSI a good choice or is another manufacturer a better choice?
- Any overall mistake?

Thanks in advance.

-Dont go for 3400mhz ram, no need for it, 2400mhz to 3000mhz is the sweet spot.
-That Mobo wont support 3400mhz ram anyway. So I picked one that will.
-The 6600 is MORE than enough for the 1070. Bottlenecks today occur in HDD and SSD transfer speeds, the M.2 is the best you can get at the moment. Look into the 961 Pro though. I picked the 850 Pro.
-MSI is a fine GPU maker.
-You need a better PSU, the CX series has some issue with higher power draw builds like yours if I'm not mistaken.

Try this on for size. Pricing may be off on some things, but it's ballpark.

I am about to go ahead ordering parts for my first ever build. Can someone please look over my parts and see if they are ok. This is my very first build so I wanna be reassured that everything will work together and a second opinion on whether I should change anything.

Asus Z170 Pro Gaming
Intel Core i5 6600K
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1070
Arctic Freezer i32 Tower Cooler
250GB Samsung 750 Evo SSD
1000GB WD HDD
Asus BC-12D2HT Blu-ray Combo
Antec GX200 Case
RM650 Corsair PSU
16GB G.Skill DDR4-3400

Go with these instead. No need for 3400mhz RAM, 2400-3000 is the sweet spot in price v performance. Benchmarks show no real FPS gains over 3000mhz. 850 Evo is the newer SSD. Everything else is fine.

Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3000 Memory ($71.88 @ OutletPC)
Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($89.99 @ Newegg)

Huh? This is the first I've heard of this. I thought that for most games it only affected loading times.

I have an SSD but it's dedicated to Hackintosh. My Windows disk (+ games) is a normal spinning HDD.

It's minor (and not REALLY a bottleneck), but CPUs, GPUs and RAM are so fast these days that SATA is the only thing that's "slower" than everything else. For small file transfers and loading times it's not that big of a difference. You'll notice a difference between an HDD and an M.2 card, but not so much between an 850 Pro SSD and a 950 Pro M.2. I work with large video files a lot so I got the 950 M.2 card and it's hella fast.

The next big jump in hard drive read/write and transfer tech is going to change EVERYTHING.

I can help. I have an i5 6600k and the CM 212 EVO. I game in Melbourne. I actually OC'd on the weekend lol. Provided you follow the guides you shouldn't have an issue, it may be winter now but in a house with the heater on at like 23C, I didn't go past 69C in a 7 hour stress test. idle temps are normal at around 25-35C. and, when it gets hotter later this year you can always just turn the OC off or lower it to something that won't melt your PC.
Thanks. Its 30C right now, and 25C in my room. Summer doesn't play around. :0

Recently my PC gave me a BSOD "CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT" error. A week or two before the BSOD, it also once locked up overnight on me but when I found it in the morning I couldn't get anything to appear on-screen and had to hard restart.

Any idea what this means? It looks like a CPU error and often cited as a driver error specifically. I'm on Windows 8.1 and haven't changed any drivers recently as far as I know. How can I trouble-shoot this?

Ppl in this thread were super helpful for my very basic build (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=146997557&postcount=2995) so I wanted to ask: I have an i5 4460. With all the new buzz around new GPUs, what's the best thing for around US$125? Is it still the 750ti? I was looking for something that could play Doom @ 1080p on medium, but I don't know if that's possible.

RX 460 is a new budget card that will do well with Vulkan. But getting an RX 470 is going to be a better deal even though it's a bit over your budget.

So a friend of mine is wanting a new PC, and since Scan UK offer Buy Now, pay in 9 months and there's no interest, I don't blame him.

Before looking at anything else, he wants an orange case that looks good. He's asked me about this one: https://www.scan.co.uk/products/aer...aming-case-120mm-orange-led-quiet-fan-w-o-psu

Would that be big enough for a proper build including a 1080 and some after market cooling? Are Aerocool cases any good? Not familiar with the name.

Aerocool cases are fine. That's a full tower case, you will be fine for pretty much anything you want to put into it.

Blinded by the luminous glory that is David Bowie's physical manifestation.
Your Current Spec: Intel Core i5-3570K @ 3.40 GHz, 8Gig DDR3(IIRC) RAM, EVGA GTX760. Forget the Motherboard but it's I think ASUS "Military" brand or whatever. I could check if need be.
Budget: I'd like to stay within $500 USD but I can pay more if I need a rework.
Main Use: I'd say 3? Gaming (PC/Emulation DON'T CARE ABOUT VR) + Web Browsing/Writing/iTunes
Monitor Resolution: 1080p. I don't think I'll be getting another monitor unless Gsync or AMD's version (though I'd prefer to stick with Nvidia) of Gsync gets to a reasonable ($200-300) price.
List SPECIFIC games or applications that you MUST be able to run well: I'm asking/making this template mostly for Battlefield 1's launch. I'd like to at least be high-medium 60FPS for it at 1080p. If I need to do a complete overhaul at least I know I can save up cash, but if I can upgrade my parts, great.
Looking to reuse any parts?: See above: If I can just slot out my RAM and GPU, that'd be great. But I'm not sure what the current state of "PS4 generation level power" is for upgrades especially since DX12 still isn't out (AFAIK?) and Vulkan is out but not mass adopted yet.
When will you build?: I'd like to do it next month, but shortly before October works.
Will you be overclocking?: Yes, No, Maybe (This means yes!) Probably not (but maybe?) I haven't had a need to Overclock this i5 despite saying "maybe" three years ago. So, if I could stick with my i5 that'd put it in the "maybe catagory" and at least paying slightly more for the peace of mind in the future would be alright with me. *shrug* But it's no big deal.

So, I know I got two replies when I posted this but I got the actual stuff (outside of RAM but the general) now:

Power Supply: Rosewill HIVE-650
Motherboard: MSI Z77A-GD55
CPU: Intel Core i5-3570K
Heatsink/Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus

GPU: EVGA Nvidia GTX-760

RAM: 8GB Single-channel DDR3 @ 799MHz

OS: Windows 10, though I'm thinking of grabbing another Harddrive to try *NIX Gaming out. Not sure yet.

I don't care about VR and so long as I'm able to run the "next-gen"/PS4 requirements that want more than 6Gig RAM stuff at 60FPS 1080P, I'm cool.

Like someone said: I could probably overclock my CPU and just upgrade the RAM and GPU (which I planned to do), but if you guys recommend completely overhauling I guess I could do that... though if I could save money and have this hardware last another 2-3 years, that'd be good for me. I'm not sure of the state of DX12/Vulkan and GPU's which is why I've been waiting until now about upgrading parts or doing a total rebuild.

Halp?

Finally got my GTX 1060 and installed it in my PC, meaning my first build is now complete. So happy! All I've had before is crappy (for gaming, at least) laptops with integrated graphics, so getting 1080p60 in just about everything maxed out is an absolutely amazing feeling.

Finally! Phase 1 is almost complete. I replaced the 1060 for a 1070 and it felt great. I only got one SSD for now, enough for the OS and probably a game or two.

Anyway, for first time builders out there, how'd you go on about building your rig? Did you need the manual at your side or just posted here on gaf/internet? I'm quite excited to start tomorrow. I'll probably get some expansions next month like additional hdds and a better cooling solution.

Also, anyone had any problems redeeming Asus codes for the Doom promo? I still haven't received my code and no replies from customer service. Should I just give up?

You will need the motherboard manual to learn where to plug some things in. Like the stuff from the front of your case or which slots your ram should go.

Look at the Hyper 212's little instructions too. That is hardest thing in your build to get right.

Everything else is pretty common sense or you can watch a youtube video. If you are still stuck, that's what this thread is for.

Thinking about a new monitor

I'll use it for PC gaming and console gaming primarily. No reason to be above 1080p.

Looking for something with great colors and no ghosting. TN panels still seem like the best choice for me because of that last part, but if it's possible for an IPS or VA panel to have no ghosting, I'm game. Call the budget $300 I suppose.

Any ideas?

Hey guys, got a quick question for my brother

HE bought a new gaming rig, witha gtx1080, an i7, etc. So basically a pretty beefy rig.

The thing is, he's unsure what monitor to buy. He bought a 60hz 4k monitor but we tried it out and honestly weren't impressed, it felt like we could get better for the same price and it didn't need to be 4k.

Now however, I told him he should get a 1440p screen with 144hz.. The thing is, these screens are literally more expensive than 4k screens, I really don't get it.. is there any 1440p monitor, 27 inches that isn't ridiculously priced? ( like, 500 CAD maximum)

My brother wants to buy a 1080p screen... Which would be a huge waste because the gtx1080 can play most games at 1440p 60 fps easily... It feels like a waste of a card IMO

any tips?

I've got the Asus 239H-P. 23" IPS monitor that does 1080p very well; PS4 and PC games look great on them, and no problems playing online shooters. Only $126 on Amazon.

You'll be stuck with 60hz at 1440p for the budget.

I'd suggest something like the GW2765HT or PB278Q.

Both 27", IPS, 60hz, 1440p.

Guys, could you help me in just one thing?

My AMD Radeon 6870HD - 1 GB - Saphire just died. And sadly, I'm addicted to Overwatch. I'm not going to buy a new PC at the moment, but I'll replace my GPU.

Considering I'm buying a new PC in dec. I'm thinking about an MSI GTX 1070 - X Gaming or the AMD Radeon RX 480 Saphire (Reference).

So.... is it too bad to buy any of those two and use a AMD Phenom X6 - 1090t @ 3.6 GHZ and 4 Gb DDR3 - 1600 mhz.

I KNOW IT'S AWFUL, but how much awful? Is it awful enough to not run Battlefield 1 at 1080p in October?

Thanks amigos. I ran WhoCrashed and the crashes are suspected to be software-related, not hardware-related. That at least gives me some peace of mind that I'm not expecting to have to spend money to resolve this issue. I do overclock (i5 2500K) and recently removed a case fan that was rattling. I repaired the fan but haven't reinstalled it yet. I'm suspecting that without that fan my PC is a bit hot (although according to SpeedFan, all sensors show between 30-40C, so I don't think it's a heat issue). I'll put the fan back in and see what happens.

Yeah, I'm hoping all the cables and outlets have labels on 'em.

As for that fan.,I need to find the optimal direction to put it. Anyway, I'll try posting some questions if I ever get some problems.

ITX board for a first build? Bold move.

Is that Evolv the mATX or the ITX?

the only thing youll possibly need is the manual for the mobo to know which dimms to use for your ram and maybe for the header pins.

Trying to figure out why when I'm running Prime95, my voltage settings don't match what I have set in bios. I have 1.33 set, but it always sits around 1.31. I have an i7 6700k with a Gigabyte motherboard (GA-Z170XP-SLI), and the only settings I've changed are setting multiplier to 45, vcore to 1.33, LLC to high, disabled turboboost, disabled all c states except for C1E, enabled speedstep (EIST)....yeah, I think that's it.

I'm trying to get a higher overclock than 4.5 actually, but it seems my voltages are holding me back. I did notice they max out at around 1.4, but those seem to just be spikes.

Okay, so the monitor I currently uses has a VGA cable/connector. The GTX 1080 do not support VGA, bu it does support DVI. What kind of connector do I need to use on the VGA cable to get it to support DVI?

DIfficulty to explain, even I don't fully understand.

Hmm, how about 600$?

That's insane, you can get 4k monitors for cheaper...

Yeah, it's crazy. G-Sync really drives the price of these things up.

For $600 -
XL2730Z - 144, TN, no adaptive tech
XG270HU - 144, TN, free-sync
MG279Q - 144, IPS, free-sync

As far as I know, GTX 1080/70 dropped support for VGA signal completely, so you'd need some sort of active adapter if there exists one for VGA to DVI. Actually not even sure if that would work, but there seems to exist adapters for Displayport to VGA.

Yeah, I know. The tech guy who helped me building it (super smart with computers) said I needed a connector with tinier "center pin" or something. Like the biggest of the "pins", the sharp things that stick out needs to be smaaler/tinier.

The stick/pin thing that is circled with red is too big on the VGA connector, so I need one connector with a smaller/tinier one.

It feels like a waste of a card IMO

any tips?

Yes 144hz 1440p costs more than 4k but you see massive difference with 144hz too compared to 60hz.
Best stuff is never cheap.
