Just upgraded from an MSI 980 Ti Gaming to the Asus Strix 1080 (non-OC version unfortunately). Best part is that it was a free upgrade!

My results from 3DMark FireStrike. No overclocks, just default clocks out of the box, including on CPU. Does this look about right in terms of gains?

With the release of the new graphics cards from Nvidia and AMD I'm thinking of getting a new GPU but I'm wondering if I should get a new mobo now since I have some questions. First my specs:

Mobo: ASRock 970 Extreme4 AM3+/AM3 AMD 970 + SB950 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard with UEFI BIOS
CPU: AMD FX-4350 Vishera 4.2GHz Socket AM3+ 125W Processor FD4350FRW4KHK OEM Ver.(OC'd to 4.5 GHz)
GPU: ASUS Radeon R9 270 OC 975MHZ 2GB 5.6GHZ GDDR5 2xDVI HDMI DisplayPort PCI-E Video Card
RAM: 16GB Total with 1 x G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory and 1 x G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9D-8GBRL
PSU: CORSAIR TX Series CMPSU-650TX 650W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC

I'm thinking of getting either a Sapphire NITRO+ RX 480 or an ASUS ROG OC Strix 1060 depending on which I can get at a decent price not jacked up by scalpers and so I'm wondering if I should upgrade my mobo or PSU. I'm kind of confused how PCIE 3.0 works since I went on Newegg and coule only find two AMD mobos that had 2 PCIE 3.0 slots and it seemed like the second one was gimped or something and would only be as fast as a PCI 2.0 slot? New GPU's seem to be listed as supporting PCIE 3.0 so I'm wondering if it would be worth a mobo upgrade since my current board only has PCIE 2.0 slots. Also, while I'm very happy with my FX-4350 I'm kind of handicapped by my mobo if I ever want to go with an 8-core CPU since it doesn't seem to play nice with 8-cores (which is why last year I bought what I think is the best 4-core CPU it supports). I'm also kind of curious about power draw and if my old Corsair 650W is good enough, and also this November will be the 5 year anniversary of when I bought it and I've read some product reviews stating their same PSU's died out after 5 years so I'm wondering if I should replace it now or wait and see how long it lasts. So yeah, any help would be greatly appreciated!

I wouldn't recommend putting a dime into AM3. It's an old, poor platform and it just isn't worth it. If you aren't upgrading to something entirely new (read: Intel) just stick with what you have for now. PCIe2.0 won't hold you back any more than that CPU.

I'm not sure what the general recommendation of replacing PSUs is, but I'd say just ride with it if you haven't had any problems with it. If it were a lower quality PSU it might be better to replace it, but it's a good one.

PC crashes sometimes when I plug into the front USB on the case. Any ideas?

It just freezes, and I have to manually power down.

The front USB ports are 3.0, and the device I am plugging in a headset, but it's not a USB 3.0 cable. I wonder if that's the issue? It does work after I reboot, but if I plug in again, it may crash.

Edit: I think I solved. Downloaded new USB 3.0 drivers for my mobo, and it's working fine now. Fingers crossed.

Having some shit luck with my recently purchased Gigabyte GA-Z170XP-SLI. Thinking of going with an Asus Z170-Pro. I really want a good overclock board. Good choice? This will be paired with an i7 6700k. Hoping for a stable 4.5 GHz overclock (using a Kraken x61 AIO cooler).

I had hoped to purchase an Asus z170-Pro but they were way overpriced when I was ready to pull the trigger. Ended up going with the Asus ROG Maximus VIII Hero (WTF is this, a street fighter II spinoff?) and I have found it to be really nice for overclocking. I literally selected the XMP profile for my RAM (bumping it to 3000mhz) and pushed the core ratio limit to 46, and set the Core Voltage to 1.35 and bam rock solid 4.6ghz, maxxing temps in the high 60s with the Corsair h100i. I will definitely be tweaking it, as I am sure there is plenty of room with the voltage if I want to drop down and perhaps more room for OC too. The ROG Bios is pretty great for this process, but I am sure the Pro is great too. Have fun!

I would drop the Asus board, pick the Gigabyte GA-B150M-D3H and invest the money towards the GPU, meaning a AIB AMD 480 or maybe even a NVIDIA 1070. If you are using a Freesync monitor go the AMD route. Otherwise you could upgrade the ram up to 16GB or even better buy a small SSD for your OS and most frequently played games, it's a huge difference.

Bumped your RAM to 2400mhz and 16gb, NZXT 210 case, 2x 120mm fans for the front, and 250gb Samsung SSD puts you just over budget.

-Dont go for 3400mhz ram, no need for it, 2400mhz to 3000mhz is the sweet spot.
-That Mobo wont support 3400mhz ram anyway. So I picked one that will.
-The 6600 is MORE than enough for the 1070. Bottlenecks today occur in HDD and SSD transfer speeds, the M.2 is the best you can get at the moment. Look into the 961 Pro though. I picked the 850 Pro.
-MSI is a fine GPU maker.
-You need a better PSU, the CX series has some issue with higher power draw builds like yours if I'm not mistaken.

Try this on for size. Pricing may be off on some things, but it's ballpark.

Go with these instead. No need for 3400mhz RAM, 2400-3000 is the sweet spot in price v performance. Benchmarks show no real FPS gains over 3000mhz. 850 Evo is the newer SSD. Everything else is fine.

Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3000 Memory ($71.88 @ OutletPC)

Thanks for the advice! I dropped the asus and went with the gigabyte and added the 1070 to my build and also up my ram to 16gb 2400. I finished up everything last night and now i can enjoy the lovely life of PC gaming.

Is anyone using the Asus Xonar DG 5.1 soundcard on Windows 10? I'm currently using some old onboard which is pretty trash and I'd just like to know if Asus has put out a good Windows 10 driver for the DG yet? It's super cheap and will be a nice boost over what I have.

I hope mkenyon updates the form factor spreadsheet. I want to recommend the Phanteks Enthoo Evolv ITX. So far its been doing great. Noise is unnoticeable for me, plenty of room for ventilation and has great modular parts. The case also fits the Asus Strix 1070, which is 300mm long. I've been playing Rise of the Tomb Raider on highest settings at 1080p, and the max temp I get is 70°C. People might say its too large for an ITX case but considering the offerings, I think its good.

It's a 6700K. Not really, Since I have no interest in spending 900 dollars on 2TB SSD drive. It's a hybrid drive for game storage. My m.2 drive is to small for game storage & mods.

There's plenty of room in that case for two 1TB ssd's, which could be had for $600 or less.

With all that water, I hope you're pushing the 6700k much further than the 4.0 GHz you screencapped.

Really dumb question I am going to probably embarrass myself and ask.

I have a GTX 1070 and I have been reading up on how a lot of programs make use of the CUDA cores. Programs like Premiere Pro, which I use a lot for editing.

My question is, is there any special "CUDA Drivers" I need to download so my card is optimized to use it's CUDA cores in applications that benefit from them?

Thanks.

I have one. I was having issues with it after I did the win10 upgrade over my existing win7 install. Did a fresh install of win10 and it's been fine ever since.

Ok guys I need your help.

My PC automatically reboots (Kernel-Power - Error 41) whenever the graphics card is put under stress. It not always happens while gaming, but pretty frequently. With FurMark test I can reproduce the problem at will. Temperatures are not the problem, they can't even get hot because the PC instantly reboots as soon as I start the benchmark on FurMark...
I deinstalled and reinstalled all graphic drivers, ran memtest86+ (no errors), replugged everything inside the PC, ran CPU and RAM stress-tests (no problems). Nothing really helped...until I disabled automatic restart on errors in Windows 10, now everything is fine again. I can run FurMark and play games without crashes. There are no entries in the ErrorLog from Windows or anything, everything seems fine.

My question: is there any danger of disabling that option, like can I wreck my Hardware with it? I don't want to switch my PSU or Graphics card without 100% proof they are the problem, and obviously my PC CAN run the stuff because when I disable the Windows option everything is fine.

My specs:
Windows 10 with Anniversary
600 Watt PSU
Prozessor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4790K CPU @ 4.00GHz, 4000 MHz, 4 Kern(e), 8 logische(r) Prozessor(en)
Systemhersteller MSI
Systemmodell MS-7845 (Z97-GD65 GAMING)
GTX970
RAM: 16 GB DDR3@799.9 MHz (NB Frequency 3999.1MHz)

Any suggestions are welcome at this point....

So my PC started to crash when gaming after I installing an addition 8gb RAM stick. I ran Memtest86 and got over 10000 errors with just the new RAM installed.

I am guessing these means that it is defective?

Omg yeah... RMA the stick, you can save an HTML of the test with memtest86 and I usually print that off as proof for the return.

Can someone help me with a Monitor issue on my Acer Predator XB271hu?

I turned on my PC this morning and the desktop no longer reaches the edge of the screen. There's a black border on top and to the sides that wasn't there yesterday. I didn't change any settings.

I reset my monitor to factory defaults. No change.

I installed new Nvidia drivers for my 980 and did a clean install. Nothing.

Went into the Control Panel and tried to adjust the screen size but it's at maximum width and height and won't let me expand further.

WTF is happening and how can I fix it?

I have a DGX and use these community drivers as I couldn't install the official ones.

OK, so my PS4 which is plugged into my monitor is having the same issue. Must be a problem with the display and not the PC setup.

I'm planning on buying a cheap second 22-24" monitor with a pivot function for use while gaming or programming. I'm looking at the Samsung S22E450B, which looks decent. However, it does not have either HDMI or DisplayPort, only VGA/DVI. I can go up ever so slightly in price and get the Samsung S22E450DW, which is 16:10 (1680x1050) and does have DisplayPort too. I don't expect anyone to know anything about these specific models, but would it be a bad idea to buy a monitor without DisplayPort or HDMI in terms of futureproofing? DVI has stuck around for a long time and is still there on the latest graphics cards, but do you think that will be the case in the future as well or is it on the way out?

I bought a lenovo t2224zd for the same purposes a while ago and have been very happy with it. IPS panel, USB3 ports, HDMI, DisplayPort, 21,5" @ 1080p (https://support.lenovo.com/de/de/documents/t2224zd). It even boasts (crappy) speakers and a decent webcam. I think I got mine for like 160€.

However the thing seems to be quite the rarity, a quick google search returned no shops that sell it and I had to buy it from a shop I never heard of as well lol. It's kind of a shame, the thing even came with a cable organizer that you can snap on its back for clean cable management. Something that manufacturers of 700$ gaming monitors apprently can't think of lol

This is absolutely not a dumb question.

On OSX, you need to download separate CUDA drivers. On Windows and Linux, you should be okay with just GeForce drivers.

Weird, what games do you usually play ?
Have you tried Display Driver Uninstaller, and reinstalled the nVidia drivers?

ill give it a whirl. just been going through good graphic games i have installed. but witcher 3, overwatch, no mans sky, watch dogs, doom, batman ak. (i know not all great graphics) but overwatch i get like 30 frames less than i did on my 980ti.

Okay that shouldn't definitely happen.
Maybe the drivers are faulty. Witcher 3 should be good for testing the capabilities of the GTX 1080.

I'm still getting high fps in that one. But with hairworks turned off I feel it should be above 90fps @ 1440
Edit: completely reinstalled drivers. Nothing changed. Should I either reinstall Windows or exchange the card. (Bought it locally) could exchange it for the strix

It was first time I entered the Bios, Nothing has been overclocked. I wanted one complete drive with 2TB or more. I don't want my games on a separate drives. I want one complete drive. Theirs nothing wrong using a Hybrid drive or mechanical drives.

80 dollars compared to 600 dollars. I rather spend that 600 dollars on something else. Only thing SSD will do is maybe speed up a loading screen up by a few seconds.

You do know this PC was only Built to play games, Nothing more. It's not my main PC.

High fps such as? What are your settings in The Witcher 3?
I am not entirely sure if your gfx card is faulty at all, hard to tell.

Well thank you. That's good to know. I built my computer knowing I'd be using it for more productivity than gaming so I just wanted to be sure it was setup the best possible way.

You thought about going with the NZXT S340 White? It's a clean looking case, great airflow and cable management also. The one you picked does have a top screen, which is nice, S340 does not.

Build looks solid, you need an i7 for any reason? The $100 price premium vs only a 5% gaming increase might not be worth it unless you're rendering 3D/video. Go with an i5 6600k if you don't need it.

Consider this Mobo instead: ASUS Z170-A

Looking for Asus Z170-A impressions, mainly how well it overclocks. I was going to go with a Pro, but I can find an A locally for $70 cheaper, and they seem largely the same save for audio and usb 3.1 controller. I'll be using it with an i7 6700k, G Skill 16GB 3000 MHz ram, and a Kraken x61 AIO CPU cooler.

Great tip on a white cab. I'm actually placing it in my living room which is mostly white. Why didn't I think of that before? Thanks!

So the i7 isn't wort the price? My current rig is a i5 4460 and I'm not super happy with it.
