Please don't leak, please don't leak....
And no, the tubing didn't come out as well as I'd hoped, but it works.

If my PSU was dead, my motherboard's power LED wouldn't turn on at all, would it? The Asus Z170A is in my case now to replace the dead MSI PC Mate, but it won't turn on. Neither the chassis button or the power on button on the motherboard can get it to start. The green power LED is on and stays on, and the chassis LEDs light up for a split second if I press the power button after turning the PSU on/off again, but then they quickly shut off and no fans start. It's 4am and I'm too tired for this shit. x__x

Edit: I've tried reseating the CPU so I don't think there's an issue there.

Both the 8pin CPU power and 24 pin ATX power are plugged in?

I have two quick questions. I asked a little bit ago with no answers so I'll be more succinct:

1. Will I see a big improvement in performance (primarily with games) if I go from an i5-3570K to an i5-6600K?

2. Is it on Intel's roadmap to change sockets or phase out the 1151 that would make it difficult for me to upgrade beyond the 6600K in the future?

The 3570k benches almost identical to the 6600k, I wasn't even going to bother upgrading because of that but my wife wanted a newer PC too, so I ended up going with the i7 6700k so I'd see some performance improvements.

To upgrade the ram/mobo/cpu for such a minor improvment would have been a waste. If gaming is what you are aiming for just toss any new gpu in there and you will be fine for some time still. There's always going to be the odd game that is cpu limited but the great majority would be perfectly fine on a 3570k plus you can always overclock it to get even more life.

http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core-i5-6600K-vs-Intel-Core-i5-3570K

Imho either do what I did and go for an i7 6700k, blow a ton of cash or keep your current setup and spend the money on something like a gtx 1070 and a good ssd (if you dont have one already) either way you will be able to max 1080p and 1440p to an extent for quite some time.

What's better, a GTX 1060 or RX 480?

I debated this for a month, couldn't decide... finally settled on the sapphire rx480 nitro, buuut no bloody stock in Canada and the price was insane... so I tried other models, nope so I said screw it and bought a gtx1070, no longer had to debate which of the two was better lol

Yeah so they're basically tied? There's a 6GB 1060 on newegg for $250. Small form factor but apparently runs as hot as 85C!

I'm looking for a good 1080p card that's solid for at least the next couple years

I need a new monitor but I don't quite get the HDR thing that is so big in the display world right now. I know 10bit monitors have been around for a long time but is there a standard or phrase I should look for to take advantage of whatever it is Microsoft, Nvidia, and AMD are so excited about? All the "HDR for dummies" style articles I read usually pertain to the handful of televisions that are doing it right.

I think all the $250 ones are sold out? The gigabyte windforce oc is next cheapest for $270. It should run cooler with the double fan setup.

Can't really find a relevant thread so posting here. It's gta 5 amazing optimised or something?

I'm getting constant no dips 60fps+ on a gtx 770... I'm using an i7930 OC to 3.8 but that cup is what 7 years old? Or is it just a beast? Makes me question even upgrading cpu if it's that good in a cpu heavy game such as gta 5.

Setting are all on very high except textures which is medium and that's only because I get a warning if I increase it, apparently 2gb of vram isn't enough. Might try it on high anyway.

I'm really looking at $250 max. Is there a cheaper card out there that would suffice for 1080p over the next couple years? I'm so out of the PC gaming loop.

You and me both. I think there is something akin to it in the 144hz new computer screens. Something about the lighting tech.

Honestly, I think the current market is a mess. There is so many things now. Free sync, gsync fast sync. 4k 2k. 60hz 120hz 144hz. Widescreen, ultra widescreen.

I made a decision to ignore all these crazy techs and went with a nice 1440p panel that had none of those mind bending marketing mumbo jumbo. I'm in heaven. Screen was cheap and is an absolute joy PQ wise.
I don't regret my choice at all. It was easy because every time I looked at the review for a top tech screen, there was always comprises and quality control issues.

My particular screen is the AOC q2778vqe.
It has none of those fancy crazy techs and it is dirt cheap.
What it has thought, is very good picture quality out of the box with very low response time. 60hz is all the speed I need.

When, and I mean when a panel that has all the right techs sorted out at a reasonable price with none of the downfalls I see everywhere, I'll bite. That may be in a while.

The 470 is a good bet. 4GB should be fine for the next couple of years at 1080p, but there are 8GB versions. A few games now have settings at the high end that are greyed out if you only have 4GB, but I don't see games flat out not working with 4GB in the next couple of years.

Yeah I don't need everything maxed. High, preferably very high settings, some form of AA.

I'm still using a FX 6300 CPU so that kind of sucks. Oh well. Gotta start somewhere.

Could anybody help me out? I just got a gsync screen but in nvidia control panel it says vsync is on as well?
Should I enable both gsync and vsync in control panel and disable it in game or just disable vsync in both? I searched for it on the internet but I couldn't find a good answer for it..

In Nvidia control panel, Gsync = ON and Vsync = ON. In-game, Vsync = OFF.

I had almost exact the same issue and I had to replace the PSU in the end :/

I'm hoping it's just the PSU. I have a 550w OCZ Fatality that I've been using since July 2010. I dont remember if there was an LED that was supposed to come on when it was plugged in but the susyem isnt on, but there's nothing now aside from the motherboard LED. Currently on the way to pick up an EVGA Supernova since they're on sale. If replacing this doesn't work then shit, I dunno.

It still looks pretty good. The one fitting on the res looks a bit off, everything else looks good.

I'm already dreading when I have to do mine. The one return line is going to be a pain due to how far I have to run it.

Have you checked the Front panel connectors for the motherboard?

In my experience it's easy to mess these up by accident. You may have got them right, but it's always best to double check to make sure even the smallest thing is plugged in properly.

Even a improperly plugged front panel connector will prevent the PC from turning on when everything otherwise looks correct.

Hey I got a 980ti last year and it'seems been good to me.

The other day I was thinking about my cpu and realized it's been like 5 years since I bought it.

Is now the time to upgrade my i5 2500k?

Would improperly configured headers stop the system from booting using the motherboard's power button?

Considering you've waited this long, I'd hold out a while longer and see if Zen compels Intel to reevaluate things (namely capping mainstream CPUs at 4c/8t and attaching a huge premium to its "enthusiast" line). There are gains to be had, but you're not terribly CPU-limited at this juncture.

I haven't noticed anything really limiting me right now so maybe your right I should maybe hold out a bit longer. Still hard to believe it's not yet time to upgrade haha

I have an issue and I'm not sure what's causing it. In video playback on both Facebook and YouTube I occasionally get scattered image artefacts (see images below). They flicker across the moving imagery. They are difficult to replicate and sometimes do not occur at all. They can be captured through image capture. They only appear in the video viewpoint, not the rest of the screen. I haven't noticed them during play of games, but I'm pretty sure I noticed it briefly Battlefront's opening FMV.

Advice?

Looks like corrupted v-ram

Or maybe his overclock on the v-ram isn't stable.

Cheers guys. Currently got an additional 200MHz on the VRAM, so maybe that's a problem.

Best software for testing?

EDIT: Burn/tress testing with OCCT now, and I'm getting the same artefacts on my screen as-is. Fuck, I hope my GPU isn't dying.

Only if you are going for an I7, either latest Skylake I7 or latest 6 core I7 (Haswell-E ?), not worth an upgrade to another I5.

Time Spy, the new suite from 3DMark, is also a good stress test for GPU OC.

I would recommend revert everything back to stock, go up 50Mhz each time for MEM OC.

Overclock that 2500k to hell and back. Even on air (not stock) you can get a pretty significant upgrade.

4.5Ghz will be 1.3-1.4v area on a 6700k.
Youll be cooling limited before vcore limited.

for me 4.5 is 1.35V. if i wanted to get 4.6Ghz i'd probably need to get to 1.4V or more. temperature was 76C in Prime95. i could probably increase the voltage a bit more and stay under 80-85C which would be fine in a heavy stress test because that isn't the temperature you'll get under normal usage including gaming. my cooler is the 212X and my case has 4x 140mm fans.

Does this apply to performance across the board, or just gaming performance? Would the 6600K be faster than the 3570K with video rendering and encoding?

I'll give TImeSpy another burl. This is pretty concerning. The fact I'm seeing background artefacts glitching through to the general browser now seems indicative to me of a GPU issue.

Really do not want to go through the returns process for my 1080.

EDIT: I should add this is the first time I've seen these errors, and I think only after the last Nvidia driver udpdate. I wonder if it was that.

While this may not be your case, I had a similar issue a couple year ago where I was seeing those artifacts in some video application while they were absent somewhere else.

Well, it turned out it was a cheap-ass hdmi cable pulling tricks on me. So I won't rule out that possibility (and it's something you can test right away in a couple minutes anyway). As I said, your case seems more serious, but hey, I went through that for hours before trying the cable route. xD

Try reverting to old drivers too.

Good luck, I'm 99% sure replacing your PSU will do the trick as my old broken PSU showed exact the same symptoms!

So, I finally made a decision. Going with the 1070 and using the money saved compared to the 1080 toward the Dell 27" 1440p G-sync monitor that Best Buy has on sale right now. The more modest upgrade to the 1070 over the 970 should be justified to help push the extra pixels and refresh rate over my current 1080/60 monitor. G-sync should also help even if I end up dipping slightly below 60 in some games in a couple years when the card is pushed harder, which could extend the usefulness of the card.

Made the right call. Upgrading gpu and not upgrading display tech is counterproductive.

You'll be more than fine at 1440p: I had a SLI 980ti, but in games where that wasn't supported, a single 980ti performed just fine, even more so thanks to gsync.

1070 is a bit better than a 980ti, so you're set.
