Thinking of buying an i3 6100 from Jet.com for $97.18 - should I hold off and wait till potential labor day sales or just go with it?

No way should you be buying a 750Ti, especially at that price point. Pick up a GTX 1060. Get rid of the extra SSD if you need to to afford it.

Also, get a better brand of PSU. Corsair, EVGA, Seasonic.
exchanged the PSU with the Seasonic M12II-520 EVO at 80 eur
Looking into which GTX1060 might be most interesting. I found an MSI 3GB one at 270, but also one at 190 with 2GB at amazon.co.uk

Has anyone got the "Enthoo EVOLV ATX Tempered Glass"? It looks beautiful, is it a good case?

I recently worked with one, It's a great case. Exceptional build quality, great layout, and easy easy to work in. It's a tier above the Fractal R4 & R5, well worth the extra money.

i got a amd cpu 8350 and amd gpu 7950 , i dont know if i need to upgrade my cpu or gpu? , i dont need 4k or having a game on ultra setting , i was thinking of buying a 460 amd

A little over that budget, but I'd recommend the ASUS PG278Q. 1440p, 144hz, GSYNC. Your 6700k/1070 combo should be able to max out all current games at that resolution.

If you want to save some money, you could look into picking up a used one. There's a bunch available on ebay and I might be putting mine up in the GAF B/S/T thread.

Sounds good. I'll check that. What do you think about the Z35 Predator if I could get it for 675?

Sorry if this isn't the right spot to post this, but in lieu of making a new thread I thought I would try here first.

I built a gaming desktop years ago based on recommendations in this thread and it worked out great. I haven't really used it at all in a few years now though since it is stuck at my parents house, my university is hours away and I play most games on my laptop these days. I was hoping then to sell it. I don't really know how much to ask though, I have never sold a computer before. I was wondering if someone here could give me some recommendations on good price to ask. Here are the specs:

GPU: MSI R6950 Twin Frozr II OC Radeon HD 6950 2GB 256-Bit GDDR5
CPU: Intel Core i5 760 Quad Core Processor 2.8GHZ 8MB
RAM: 4GB (2X2GB)
Motherboard: ASUS P7P55D-E LGA1156 P55
HDD: Samsung Spinpoint F1 1TB SATA2 7200RPM
Power Supply: Corsair TX650W
Drive: Samsung BLU-RAY BD-ROM & DVD Writer Combo
Case: Antec Three Hundred Mini Tower Gaming Case

Also where should I sell it? Is somewhere like Craigslist my best bet?

Thanks!

GPU first. CPU upgrade that you can do is either go Intel Skylake build or Kaby Lake when that releases or wait for AMD Zen.

I'm going to Microcenter after work to buy a new GPU since my 560ti just can't keep up anymore. I keep going back and forth between a 1060 and 1070. I really don't plan on going over 1080p for the time being. Also I'm still running an i5 2500k as my CPU. If I do go the 1070 route would a g sync monitor in the future be worth it, or would my CPU be a bottleneck? I just don't know if the 200 extra bucks for the GPU is worth it.

If you are thinking 1080p 60fps + G-sync, then I recommend a 1060.

If you are thinking 1080p 144fps + G-sync, then I recommend a 1070.

144fps + G-sync is a game changer and more than worth the extra $200 for the 1070.
Plus, last time I checked you aren't paying very much on top for a 1080p 144fps g-sync monitor compared to a 1080p 60fps g-sync monitor. This would keep you well ahead of the curve for a while if you plan on sticking with 1080p.

Edit: Your CPU may bottle-neck for more CPU-intensive games like open world stuff, but I don't believe that should be cause for concern just yet. The 2500k (especially when over-clocked) is still a capable CPU in todays standards.

Have you considered breaking the PC down and selling it part by part? Can be pretty difficult to gauge how much a PC is worth with parts from 5-6 years ago and being from the UK I can't help you with that, however selling the parts separately might be easier for you.

Alternatively, put it on eBay for a week at a relatively tempting starting bid price and see where it goes?

Oh man, gang. I just bought a GTX 1070. I'm coming up from a HD 7850. I expect to have my face melted off.

Had some trouble finding a card that would fit my case (Silverstone SG05) and I was skeptical of Gigabyte's single-fan, mini 1070. But then I ran across the ASUS Dual O8G. Two-fan cooler, relatively svelte at 9.5", and found a deal for ~$360. Had a hard time saying no.

EVGA supernova 750w.

RX480 Nitro+, the 8gb version. I don't think 78 is a huge problem in itself but it's just hotter than it's been.

As with everyone else has said, your temps are fine with that card. Are your gpu drivers up to date, I updated mine and the temps went down a little. I have the XFX RX 480. As for your motherboard issues, how old is your psu? Is there anyway to try another one? Are all your drivers installed? What did you do right before they stopped working?

For those who tried both, which one of these options makes the biggest difference when gaming. 144hz or G-Sync?

If you have the power: 144hz. Especially if you play FPS at a competitive level. Both are great though. If I had to choose though, it would definitely be 144hz.

I have a i7 3770k (overclocked to 4.5ghz) and a 1070. From reading replies here it seems like if I want to buy a new monitor I should stick with 1080p instead of 1440p. The Dell S2716DG is on sale and am really tempted to buy it. Should I try to look for a 1080p 144hz Gsync monitor instead? Would I not be able to go above 60fps at 1440p? I wouldn't mind reducing some settings if that is the case. I play mostly single player games if that helps, with Overwatch here and there.

Thanks alot.

Greetings. I am looking for some upgrade advice!

My current Specs. (5 year old PC):
  • CPU: i5-2500 3.3GHz overclocked at 4.6GHz
  • RAM: 8GB Dual-DDR3 1600MHz
  • Mboard: ADIS P8P67 rev3: USB3.0 SATA6.0GB/s
  • GPU: 1.25GB Nvidia GeForce GTX 570
  • HDDs: 2xSSD (80GB & 500GB), 1HD 1TB
  • Power: Corsair 850W TX850
  • Cooling: CoolIt ECO II Liquid cooling for CPU
  • etc.
I game in 1080p and it is likely that I won't be upgrading my monitor any time soon. My sub-2GB GPU will not allow me to run Planet Coaster, coming in November.

My budget is flexible but I don't want to be wasting money needlessly!

So, should I look for a second GTX 570 and attempt to use them in SLI mode? (for 2.5GB total GPU RAM?)

Or should I upgrade to newer, GPU? ex. Would a 1070 GTX suit the rest of the hardware or would I be facing ugly CPU bottlenecks?

Alternatively, given the age of the PC, would I be better off considering a new rig?

Thanks in advance, for your advice!

I would just get an update GPU if you just want to spend like 200-250. RX480 or 1060. Depends on how much you want to spend. If you just want to game in 1080. I wouldn't go the SLI route with those cards.

i have a 1070 and at 1080p it destroys everything. i've found myself downsampling games because i feel like the card isn't being used to it's full potential. it's more suited for 1440p but you could argue that it will last longer playing games at 1080p than 1440p so if you really want to future proof and don't mind the extra money then go for it but i think you'd be better off with a 1060 which is fantastic at 1080p. for 1080p 2.5GB isn't really that great. the 1060 has a 3GB model which is a joke so if you do go for it then get 6GB. the 1070 by the way has 8GB.

the 2500K i think you might be fine with for a little while longer but i've seen a lot of people with this gen of CPU say they plan on finally upgrading with kabylake around the corner. of course if you were to upgrade it would mean buying not only a new cpu but a new motherboard, new ram, and possibly a new OS license. i don't imagine your CPU will bottleneck as long as it is overclocked.

If I'm looking to play a backlog of games from 2007-2013 and have an upgradable build would the INTEL PENTIUM G4400 be an OK choice for a budget build?

Sounds good. I'll check that. What do you think about the Z35 Predator if I could get it for 675?

The Z35 has good blacks due to its VA panel, but the resolutuion is too low for its size. A monitor that big should be 3440x1440, not 2560x1080. In apps and games that don't support ultrawide, you will be limited to 1920x1080 on a 35" screen, which is terrible.

If you are spending much more than $600, look into an Asus PG279Q or Acer XB271HU.

Does anyone know if there's a "matching" 27 inch monitor to the Acer XB271HU? I bought one, and have two other mismatching 24" monitors connected, but I'd like to replace them with 27" monitors that match as close as possible to my main monitor.

Doesn't need to be G-Sync or anything, just something nice that is as close to a match as possible.

Can't wait to downsize my pc. Currently have a nzxt h440 and while it was nice at the time I just want something wayyyyy smaller and less gamer looking...

live that compact quiet cool life.

You can only have two of those three things in the M1. Zero noise mitigation on that case.

I will be getting my new PSU tomorrow(evga 850w p2) because my seasonic 760w is not able to power my build at max load anymore after 5 years. Is it ok if I just swap the unit or will I have to change the cables too?

The wiring is so nice and clean, it's gonna be a bitch to do all over again. ; (

Hopefully someone can help me. I've got an Alienware X51 R1 which had a Radeon 7870 in it. I decided to upgrade it with a GTX 1060 but when I try to boot, it seems to get stuck. If I use the HDMI port on the motherboard, I don't get any video and it beeps 5 times. If I plug the HDMI directly into the GPU, all I see is the bios screen, but I can't even access the bios. I've tried to reset the CMOS with the jumper on the motherboard, but nothing changed. I'm hesitant to try and put the Radeon 7870 back in since it's such a pain in the ass to get it back in. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this?

If you are interested in supersampling, definitely go for option number 2. A 6600k is still more than fast enough to drive any game, VR or not, but the additional GPU power provided by the GTX 1080 will not go to waste.

Of course a CPU usually lasts a lot longer, so the 6700k might be a more future proof solution if you plan to swap GPUs when the next gen stuff comes around.
Thanks for the fast feedback and for your contributions in general to the thread!

Here is what I've settled on. Thankfully I can re-use the case, PSU, and HDDs / SSD. I have a $1200 budget for the build:

1. ASUS Z170 Pro Gaming/AURA LGA 1151 Intel Z170 - $165.99
2. CORSAIR Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3000 - $81.99
3. Intel Core i5-6600K - $239.99
4. EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 - $649.99

Total: $1,137.96

It seemed pretty straightforward to select the components - if anyone thinks anything looks off, please let me know. Thanks!

It's entirely possible to have a quiet build in the M1. Mine I literally can't hear when it's on unless I game and the blower GPU fan spins up, but even that could be mitigated with a hybrid GPU like the MSI Sea Hawk. It's all about the parts you choose in the end; namely, quiet fans.
