Im reading it's a common upgrade for the X51, so I'm thinking at this point it's not a power issue. The 1060 requires at least a 400 watt psu.
Has anyone got the "Enthoo EVOLV ATX Tempered Glass"? It looks beautiful, is it a good case?
The GTX 1060 has a TDP of only 120w
The suggested rating of 400w that Nvidia recommends is not just for the graphics card but rather for an entire system.
In fact if you punch in the numbers here - http://outervision.com/power-supply-calculator
A GTX 1060 at maximum load would draw at most 236w

Thanks for the fast feedback and for your contributions in general to the thread!
Here is what I've settled on. Thankfully I can re-use the case, PSU, and HDDs / SSD. I have a $1200 budget for the build:
1. ASUS Z170 Pro Gaming/AURA LGA 1151 Intel Z170 - $165.99
2. CORSAIR Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3000 - $81.99
3. Intel Core i5-6600K - $239.99
4. EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 - $649.99
Total: $1,137.96
It seemed pretty straightforward to select the components - if anyone thinks anything looks off, please let me know. Thanks!
It's entirely possible to have a quiet build in the M1. Mine I literally can't hear when it's on unless I game and the blower GPU fan spins up, but even that could be mitigated with a hybrid GPU like the MSI Sea Hawk. It's all about the parts you choose in the end; namely, quiet fans.
I have a question about MSI afterburner. I didnt overclock my 1060 (since I'm already bottlenecked by my CPU I think). But I've been checking on the program to see if my GPU is working correctly. There are values that sometimes look weird.
When I'm playing the witcher 3 utilization limit and voltage limit changes between 1 and 0 but when I play more demanding games (I think) like RotTR utilization limit stays at 0 and voltage limit stays in 1. I tough this was normal, I know utilization=0 is cool if the GPU is working hard, but is it bad that the GPU is on his limit the whole time? (I saw some worried people on other forums with UL=0 and VL=1)
(Sorry if the question is dumb but since it's the first PC I built I'm kind of an "hypochondriac" with everything the PC does.)
Hopefully someone can help me. I've got an Alienware X51 R1 which had a Radeon 7870 in it. I decided to upgrade it with a GTX 1060 but when I try to boot, it seems to get stuck. If I use the HDMI port on the motherboard, I don't get any video and it beeps 5 times. If I plug the HDMI directly into the GPU, all I see is the bios screen, but I can't even access the bios. I've tried to reset the CMOS with the jumper on the motherboard, but nothing changed. I'm hesitant to try and put the Radeon 7870 back in since it's such a pain in the ass to get it back in. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this?
Is an i5-2500K and a GTX 1060 a good combo?

I've been having some trouble with my 1070. Is it normal to get 80+ degrees celsius on it while playing mankind divided?
My ambient temperature is 30 degrees celsius.
30°C ambient temperature is of course a bit high, which will result in higher temperatures both on your gpu and cpu. Still going over 80°C on a 1070 isn't good at all.
What kind of 1070 are you using (name)? Is your case airflow good? Are you applying some kind overclock? Are your GPU fans dust free?
It's a msi gaming x. There's almost no dust on the fans, and no overclock.
Any idea what the hell is going on with my monitor? I had what looked like a dead pixel in the lower left quadrant today. I thought "Well, at least it's not in the dead center of the screen". An hour later and it was actually in a differen position, a bit higher and closer to the center, and I just watched it move around in a small circular pattern. I'm not sure how an insect could have gotten behind the glass if that's what it is, and it looks exactly like a dead or stuck pixel.
Advice please:
My 2011 iMac has bitten the dust. I haven't been happy with Apple for a while now and think I can get better value from a PC and a gaming PC could be about the same as a new iMac. Digital Storm has an AIO called Aura that I was thinking about getting instead of an iMac since I don't have a monitor.
Is there a better deal? Is it stupid to buy instead of build? How much will I suffer going from Mac to PC?
You're well in the clear.Guys, what's with the crazy power wattages you're rocking here? I've only got a 530 watt bronze power supply for my build, and now I'm worried.
i3 6100
2x4GB DDR4 @2400Mhz
Sapphire Nitro+ RX 470 4GB

Try setting a custom fan curve using msi afterburner. Nvidia has really conservative fan profiles from the factory that prioritize acoustics over performance.
The age old question. I want a 27" gsync 1440p monitor but can afford it.
Do I go 27" 1080p 144hz
27" 1440p 60hz
Or 24" 1080p gsync
The 27" 1440p would be really nice for the work I do but usually I'm out in a coffee shop anyway.
Edit. I have a 780 and 3770
Do you have the newest bios update for the R1?

I'd still check with another psu to be sure..
Is 3,9 Ghz a good OC on a 5820k? I have 1, 13 volt. I tried 4 ghz with 1,15 volt, but it failed, got way too hot.
A bit not good.
A good overclock at 1.15v should get you 4.2Ghz
I read this thread daily right now. In the process of selling my house and buying a new one, but when that goes through I think I'm going to attempt to build my first PC.
I'll do a more formal ask when I get there, but is a 1060 pretty future proof for 1080/60?

what's the best bang for your buck mechanical keyboard?
The PC-O7s. It's slim, but it's still a big case.
I agree with Praxis, the 1070 is a perfect card for 1440p and more than enough (a bit overkill honestly, right now) for 1080p. But I personally always look ahead, and the 1070 should last a long time delivering 60fps @ 1080p. I'd choose it over 1060.
I game in 1080P. Just bought the VG278HV for the 27" and 144Hz. Currently have a GTX 970 as well. I like the display, but I can't help but think that maybe I should return it and spend a bit more for a 144hz 27" 1440p, in the event that I change my mind in 1-2 years and go 1440p (when I do a full upgrade).
Does 1080p look gross on 1440p monitors? Should I stick with the 1080p?
Hey, need some advise. My friend has a fairly ancient PC with i7 920, 10gb RAM, 7200 HDD and some 7700 radeon he grabbed a couple years ago when his 280 broke...
He said he wanted to do an upgrade but his budget is only £400 for this year. What's the smartest way to spend it?
My thinking was get an SSD and a graphics card now and next year get a motherboard with a good CPU. I was thinking of Rx 470 as it seems like a good budget card that can handle 1080p with ease. Obviously, the CPU will be a bottleneck but it seems to still perform alright in gaming.

So I'm loving my 1070...having a weird issue though. Black blotches will appear on the screen from time to time. I have only seen this issue in WoW and Overwatch. One time the entire screen turned black in Overwatch minus the HUD. Anything I ran on Steam and Origin seemed OK. I would assume the 1070 should be able to run everything at max at 1080p, which appears to do just fine other then the black spots issue
