The GTX 1060 has a TDP of only 120w

The suggested rating of 400w that Nvidia recommends is not just for the graphics card but rather for an entire system.

In fact if you punch in the numbers here - http://outervision.com/power-supply-calculator

A GTX 1060 at maximum load would draw at most 236w

[
Im reading it's a common upgrade for the X51, so I'm thinking at this point it's not a power issue.

I'd still check with another psu to be sure..

Thanks for the fast feedback and for your contributions in general to the thread!

Here is what I've settled on. Thankfully I can re-use the case, PSU, and HDDs / SSD. I have a $1200 budget for the build:

1. ASUS Z170 Pro Gaming/AURA LGA 1151 Intel Z170 - $165.99
2. CORSAIR Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3000 - $81.99
3. Intel Core i5-6600K - $239.99
4. EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 - $649.99

Total: $1,137.96

It seemed pretty straightforward to select the components - if anyone thinks anything looks off, please let me know. Thanks!

No problem. Build looks good, but I would swap out the motherboard you have for this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16813132586

It's on sale right now, so it only costs $14 more with the mail in rebate, but is better built with more features and superior audio chip.

Wow, thanks for letting me know.

Looks like I am rewiring. Gonna be a hassle, but I suppose not as much as if my computer had exploded. lol

It's entirely possible to have a quiet build in the M1. Mine I literally can't hear when it's on unless I game and the blower GPU fan spins up, but even that could be mitigated with a hybrid GPU like the MSI Sea Hawk. It's all about the parts you choose in the end; namely, quiet fans.

Numbers are numbers. Your M1 will generate more decibels than a case made for silent operation. You could run your fans at their minimum speed to lower their sound output, but you'd be sacrificing cooling ability.

Whether or not the M1 is "good enough" is subjective, but it will be louder at a given temperature or warmer at a given noise level than a case built with to a purpose other than the smallest possible internal volume.

I have a question about MSI afterburner. I didnt overclock my 1060 (since I'm already bottlenecked by my CPU I think). But I've been checking on the program to see if my GPU is working correctly. There are values that sometimes look weird.
When I'm playing the witcher 3 utilization limit and voltage limit changes between 1 and 0 but when I play more demanding games (I think) like RotTR utilization limit stays at 0 and voltage limit stays in 1. I tough this was normal, I know utilization=0 is cool if the GPU is working hard, but is it bad that the GPU is on his limit the whole time? (I saw some worried people on other forums with UL=0 and VL=1)

(Sorry if the question is dumb but since it's the first PC I built I'm kind of an "hypochondriac" with everything the PC does.)

You're using the wrong MSI Afterburner graphs. Turn off Voltage Limit and Utilization Limit, and instead turn on Power, % and GPU Usage, %. When you go into Settings then Monitoring, they are the first and third option from the top.

Hopefully someone can help me. I've got an Alienware X51 R1 which had a Radeon 7870 in it. I decided to upgrade it with a GTX 1060 but when I try to boot, it seems to get stuck. If I use the HDMI port on the motherboard, I don't get any video and it beeps 5 times. If I plug the HDMI directly into the GPU, all I see is the bios screen, but I can't even access the bios. I've tried to reset the CMOS with the jumper on the motherboard, but nothing changed. I'm hesitant to try and put the Radeon 7870 back in since it's such a pain in the ass to get it back in. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this?

Do you have the newest bios update for the R1?

I've been having some trouble with my 1070. Is it normal to get 80+ degrees celsius on it while playing mankind divided?
My ambient temperature is 30 degrees celsius.

My ambient temperature is 30 degrees celsius.

30°C ambient temperature is of course a bit high and will result in higher temperatures both on your gpu and cpu. Still going over 80°C on a 1070 isn't good at all.
What kind of 1070 are you using (name)? Is your case airflow good? Are you applying some kind overclock (e.g. a lot of cables positioned randomly everywhere)? Are your GPU fans dust free?

It's a msi gaming x. There's almost no dust on the fans, and no overclock.

Hey guys, I did not want to start a new topic for something so trivial, so I thought I'd post here.

I want to sell my 2 EVGA GTX 780s in order to upgrade to a GTX 1070, and I am looking for some advice and feedback on how to do it.

Basically, I've read too many horror stories here on GAF and on other places on how GPU selling is sketchy and how many buyers tend to scam sellers, so I was wondering what should I do when it comes to sending the cards away, once they are sold? Insured, tracked and signed is the way to go, right? Is ebay the right place, or should I look elsewhere?

Both GPUs are working perfectly, have never gone over 80oC, and have been maintained in excellent condition. I am the first owner of one, and the second owner of the other. I have outfitted both with their genuine EVGA backplates, they both come with their boxes and manuals, and I will be throwing in a tasty SLI bridge. My asking price is £300 for everything, plus 15 or 20 pounds for postage. Is that too much, with today's prices?

Any idea what the hell is going on with my monitor? I had what looked like a dead pixel in the lower left quadrant today. I thought "Well, at least it's not in the dead center of the screen". An hour later and it was actually in a differen position, a bit higher and closer to the center, and I just watched it move around in a small circular pattern. I'm not sure how an insect could have gotten behind the glass if that's what it is, and it looks exactly like a dead or stuck pixel.

A small insect could've gotten behind your monitor actually. One of those little fly things. I try to smash those things quick when they get near it. They're small enough to fit. Hopefully it's not that though because I'm sure that counts as an act of god when it comes to repairs.

Advice please:

My 2011 iMac has bitten the dust. I haven't been happy with Apple for a while now and think I can get better value from a PC and a gaming PC could be about the same as a new iMac. Digital Storm has an AIO called Aura that I was thinking about getting instead of an iMac since I don't have a monitor.

Is there a better deal? Is it stupid to buy instead of build? How much will I suffer going from Mac to PC?

I just want to address the Mac to PC transition because I was in the same position last month. I've been using OS X since 2009, and last month was my first time using Windows as my main machine. In my opinion both operating systems are pretty good, both of them have a set of annoyances (OS X has been increasingly problematic for me), and most importantly both of them are comparable in terms of features and apps (except you can game on Windows, which I've been enjoying a lot). I was worried that switching to Windows would be a big road block for me, but I'm very happy with the switch. I love OS X, but I don't miss much really. Both Windows and Mac have reached a maturity point (in my use cases) that the differences aren't big, if any. And I was a heavy OS X user: I used Alfred, Fantastical, Text Expander, etc on a daily basis. I can help you find replacement apps if there's a particular app that you can't live without.

The age old question. I want a 27" gsync 1440p monitor but can afford it.

Do I go 27" 1080p 144hz
27" 1440p 60hz
Or 24" 1080p gsync

The 27" 1440p would be really nice for the work I do but usually I'm out in a coffee shop anyway.

Edit. I have a 780 and 3770

It really depends on the PSU you have. Forget about the rated wattage. What counts is if it's a quality PSU and how much it can deliver on the 12V rail(s). You are most likely fine with 530W, but you might as well have one of these terrible PSUs that, although rated at 530W, can barely get to 300W on the 12V rails.

Try setting a custom fan curve using msi afterburner. Nvidia has really conservative fan profiles from the factory that prioritize acoustics over performance.

I concur, a custom fan curve helps a lot. My ambient temp is 39, and even under load the highest I got was 65 (with benchmarks) and 62 (with Doom 4, max settings, 1440p @ 120hz).

This is my curve, although I suggest that you experiment to find what suits you (acoustics wise):

Capture.png

I'm a bit concerned with my ambient temps, although the fans seem to be doing a good job with the curve that I set. Ordered new fans and a GRID+ (fan controller) to have better control on the airflow in my limiting case (NZXT H440). I also plan to remove two trays to let the fans blow into the GPU properly.

Im not really sure if you'd get the full benefit of gsync 144hz with a 780 @ 1440p. What about an ultra wide, assuming you do editing work?

How long will it be before we can expect the 1080 ti?

Tempted to pull the trigger on a Titan X, but as soon as I do I just know they will come out with this and it will be the 980 ti all over again.

Thanks! This was the problem. Once I upgraded to a new BIOS everything worked.

Heh that would have been a problem since the system can't take any other PSU and no other computers to pop it into. Fortunately it wasn't the problem. It would have been weird if it was since the 7870 uses more power and it worked just fine. Also the recommended PSU for the 7870 is 500 watts which is a higher recommendation than the 1060. So recommended isn't necessarily the requirement which is good for my setup.

Man the 1060 is much smaller than the 7870 and so much quieter and yet it's way more powerful. Great upgrade so far.

I read this thread daily right now. In the process of selling my house and buying a new one, but when that goes through I think I'm going to attempt to build my first PC.

I'll do a more formal ask when I get there, but is a 1060 pretty future proof for 1080/60?

Might as well spend a little more and get the 1070 to be honest.

Is 3,9 Ghz a good OC on a 5820k? I have 1, 13 volt. I tried 4 ghz with 1,15 volt, but it failed, got way too hot.

It sounds as though your cooler isn't properly seated. 4GHz at 1.15v would only be too much for Intel's stock cooler, and I assume you're not using one as Intel doesn't bundle coolers with its enthusiast line. Most 5820Ks can handle 4.5GHz at 1.2~1.3v just fine, cooling permitting.

I agree with Praxis, the 1070 is a perfect card for 1440p and more than enough (a bit overkill honestly, right now) for 1080p. But I personally always look ahead, and the 1070 should last a long time delivering 60fps @ 1080p. I'd choose it over 1060.

what's the best bang for your buck mechanical keyboard?

i have a corsair k65 which cost $75. it doesn't have any back lights but other than that i am totally happy with it. it was one of the cheapest i could find. feels really solid and appart from back lights i don't see any reason to upgrade to anything else.

The PC-O7s. It's slim, but it's still a big case.

Im actually considering that case for my HTPC build! Its between that, the bulldog, Silverston GD10 and Fractor 605.

My concern with the PC07 was the lack of hight for a good HSF, how did you get around that?

Thanks to you (and Praxis). I'm clueless with this stuff. Do you mean that it will have a longer life because it'll be under less duress running games at 1080/60? I'm looking to keep the build x monitor at or under $1k

I game in 1080P. Just bought the VG278HV for the 27" and 144Hz. Currently have a GTX 970 as well. I like the display, but I can't help but think that maybe I should return it and spend a bit more for a 144hz 27" 1440p, in the event that I change my mind in 1-2 years and go 1440p (when I do a full upgrade).

Does 1080p look gross on 1440p monitors? Should I stick with the 1080p?

i bought the dell u2515h a while back and had the same question regarding 1080p on a 1440p monitor. 1080p looks just fine on a 1440p screen at least i think it does. i thought it would look bad but didn't look much different to what it does on my 1080p monitor. if there is a difference then, to me, it is very small.

if i were in your shoes i would get a 1440p 144hz monitor and stick at 1080p 144hz then when you can move up to 1440p 144hz when your ready.

Hey, need some advise. My friend has a fairly ancient PC with i7 920, 10gb RAM, 7200 HDD and some 7700 radeon he grabbed a couple years ago when his 280 broke...

He said he wanted to do an upgrade but his budget is only £400 for this year. What's the smartest way to spend it?

My thinking was get an SSD and a graphics card now and next year get a motherboard with a good CPU. I was thinking of Rx 470 as it seems like a good budget card that can handle 1080p with ease. Obviously, the CPU will be a bottleneck but it seems to still perform alright in gaming.

920 might still be ok if not I recommend getting Xeon x5650, you buy off ebay around £45-£55 they are hex core beasts that overclock well.

get a 1060 (6gb model) and a 250GB ssd. that will easily fit the £400 budget and give a good boost in performance. a 1060 is a fantastic card for 1080p 60fps and will last a good while. however, the rest of the pc needs upgrading. a new cpu/motherboard/ram.

when kabylake cpus come out (early next year) then we should see a price drop for skylake (current gen). i'd recommend going for a skylake (or kabylake if it's within budget) cpu and 16GB ram. he can't reuse his 10GB because skylake uses DDR4 ram. 8GB would be fine but 16GB is really cheap now and it will last longer.

So I'm loving my 1070...having a weird issue though. Black blotches will appear on the screen from time to time. I have only seen this issue in WoW and Overwatch. One time the entire screen turned black in Overwatch minus the HUD. Anything I ran on Steam and Origin seemed OK. I would assume the 1070 should be able to run everything at max at 1080p, which appears to do just fine other then the black spots issue

edit: I am running a stock 2500K though. I need an external cooler on it before I can OC. Not sure if that may be the issue

might be a driver issue. what version are you on? one of the recent versions is bugged out.
