Okay, I just found out RAM/Motherboard incompatibility is a thing. I thought putting DDR4 RAMs in a DDR4 board was enough. But apparently, you need to check the full list of compatible RAMs on the board's website or you'd be facing random crashes, lockups, and restarts! Was planning to use a pair of 2400s with an H110 board, but since they will work at 2133 anyway, they are not listed as "compatible." Seems like I gotta go in blind.
Starting to regret building my own case at this point, although, it's my second attempt, and I had no issues with the last one.

In almost 10 years of building pc's, I have never used ram from the QVL list.

Did you verify the ram settings in the bios?
Does your board allow adjusting ram voltage?
Maybe the ram is just DOA.

Anybody with a 6800k or above recommend getting one and are they easy to get pass 4.0ghz+? I'd like to get a CPU that will last me a while. Do a lot of multimedia stuff along with some gaming here and there.

They are awesome and will do 4.0Ghz+ easy with a quality cooler. Will play games at max for years to come and the extra cores will be great for productivity. Go for it.

That PC is literally about a decade old and the only gaming you will be doing on it is Minesweeper. Forget $300, I wouldn't take that for free.

If you are serious about getting into PC gaming, read the OP and post a budget. There
are a bunch of people in the thread that can help you out.

Thank you. I'm not actually very serious about it yet, but I thought if there was a bargain for a good system, it might push me in the right direction. The advice is appreciated, once I'm ready I'll check the OP again.

Gonna be upgrading my desktop after 4-ish years. This will probably be used for another 4-5 years as well. If anyone has recommendations for substitute pieces (or incompatibilities with the pieces I picked, lol), I'd love to hear it. Price isn't a huge deal but if I can save a decent amount on it but still get the same performance, it'd be nice.

Fractal Design Core 1000 Black Mini-ATX Case
MSI B150M Mobo
i5-6500
G.Skill Ripjaws 16gb ram DDR4 2133
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1060 6gb
Samsung 850 Evo 500gb SSD
EVGA SuperNova 650w PSU

I have a Bluray drive, a capture card, and a 1TB HDD I'm gonna take from my old computer that I'll reuse in this.

Unless you need it now I think it's best to wait for Zen or Kaby Lake in January. The i5-7500 has a pretty large base clock boost over the 6500.

Thanks. What kind of cooler would anyone recommend for it?

Also I would like a monitor that is 20+, 144hz, IPS. I know Asus has one but it's Freesync. I wonder if there is a Gsync version.

I'll be asking a lot more questions when it comes time to order these parts.

Adding an SSD later on won't be an issue assuming you don't mind doing another clean install of Windows in the near future. I would go all in right away and make your new build awesome from day one. The improved snappiness of the overall user experience is nothing to sneeze at.. Assuming you're not going for a massive SSD, they are pretty affordable these days.

I will consider an SSD as essential. Just think about it, your shinning new GPU give you fps boost when you are gaming, but an SSD does the same when you are not and way more noticable.

Don't cut out the SSD, it is an essential component. If I was in your shoes i'd just buy the hd later, or maybe pick up an external drive for all your data.

Sounds like I should just go all out, sounds good. Not like I'm gonna need to have to replace components for a few years.

Is there a thread dedicated to tech support?

Anyway I just upgraded a gtx 770 to 970 and I have the latest drivers but I just keep getting a black screen when I turn the pc on.

I see the first screen where it gives you the option to press delete etc to go into the bios but after that a black screen and if I tap the power button it instantly turns off. The pc only does that if there is an issue

Try putting the 770 back and use driver sweeper to remove all nvidia drivers. You don't need drivers prior to GPU installation, Windows will use a generic driver.

Is there any good advice for a headset with built in microphone? Was looking at Razer ManO'war and Logitech G933, are these good? Need to have good mic quality as well.

Just tried that exact same issue.

Motherboard is p6x58d-e Asus and have 850e psu.

770 works fine no issues.

I have a 6700K and went with water cooling as it's generally better than air cooling and with less noise, plus I wanted to heavily overclock the CPU. Make sure to get a cooling system that fits in your desired case. Mine is Cooler Master Nepton 240M, and a popular choice is NZXT Kraken X61 — just make sure your case can fit that as it's 280mm.

The "flagship" ASUS monitor for gaming is the ROG Swift PG279Q. 27", 144hz (overclockable to 165hz), 1440p (with a 4K version available).

Is there any good advice for a headset with built in microphone? Was looking at Razer ManO'war and Logitech G933, are these good? Need to have good mic quality as well.

I use Kingston HyperX and I'm comfortable with it. I have a big head with buffy hair so it's a little tight, so keep that in mind if you're interested in it (as none of the reviews I read for it mentioned this). For the price it's really good though.

So apparently my case fits 2 more SSDs or HDDs and Im considering getting a 1 TB SSD sometime in the future.

How's the future for SSDs? Will the price decrease, will there be some better technology or something in the "near" future?

The biggest deterrent right now pushing me away from building my own in a few months is that I'll absolutely need windows + office, and that's $200+ (!!!) retail. That's an outrageous cost after spending $1000 plus tax on a build.

I never said I was mad. Just that I don't know if I want to spend $1200 plus tax on a computer. Thank you for the advice on office 365, I didn't even know that existed!

A full custom loop with multiple radiators and a good pump can be pretty quiet, depending on pump speed, fans, and case. Your all-in-one cooler is louder, more expensive, and performs the same as a good air cooler.

Wasnt sure where to post this but im having problems with games crashing after running for a bit. Some games will run fine for about an hour and then crash, others like Fallout 4 will crash after like 15 minutes. Not sure what could be causing the problem and it seems like lowering the current games graphics options helps cut down on crashing. Current games that have been having problems: Fallout 4, Batman Arkham Knight, and The Witcher 3. Other like Battlefront, Doom, MGSV TPP, and Rise of the Tomb Raider all seem to run fine without issue.

Here are my current specs:

CPU: Intel Core i5-6600K @ 3.50GHz
Mobo: MSI Z170A Gaming Pro
Video card: EVGA Superclocked ACX Nvidia Geforce GTX 950 2GB GDDR5
Ram: 16 GB Ripjaws V-Series DDR4 3000
PSU: EVGA 600 Watt 80 Plus
HDD: 1TB Western Digital Caviar Blue 7200rpm 6.0 GB

Not sure what else you would need to know about the system.

Anyway, I really should be having these issues. Especially on games like Fallout. Not sure what could be causing the problems, Sometimes I can play for hours and not have a single crash but lately it seems like I cant play for more than 20 minutes. I use the Nvidia GeForce Experience to help judge what settings each game should be set at and if they start to crash ill adjust the settings down a few notches until it seems to alleviate my problem.

I plan on upgrading to a GTX 1060 or 1070 this winter, would that help stop the crashing? Or is there something else along with the video card causing the issues you guys think? Ram or CPU maybe?

if it is DOA should I still be able to see the bios? and the gfx cards own custom lights light up and fans, it's MSI.

Its possible that as soon as Windows starts loading the that GPU clocks up and crashes?

You could try a couple of other things to rule out windows:
Create a Ubuntu Live USB stick and boot into it.
Or try safe mode in windows.

We have plugged the monitor into the back of the GPU right? And not the motherboard?

Whats the rest of the system specs?

I'm not sure if this is the right thread to ask, but I'd like advice on what new CPU and motherboard to get for my computer.

My little "baby" is gonna be 7 years old soon and I've been changing some parts over the last 2 years (GPU, RAM, another HDD, as well as other minor stuff like mouse, headphones, etc) and I'd like to know what would your suggestions be.

I do know for a fact that if I want to change this CPU, I'll also need to change the motherboard so I'd like your best combos, but I'm not looking for something high-end, middle-end (better than what I have right now) would be good, my budget would be around the 400€ mark (if it's cheaper even better).

For reference, the CPU I have right now and for over 6 years is the Intel® Core™ i5-750 Processor (8M Cache, 2.66 GHz).

Info on it here: http://ark.intel.com/products/42915/Intel-Core-i5-750-Processor-8M-Cache-2_66-GHz

For any1 who is new to PC building and is on a tight budget this trick might help u save between $100-200 on the HD and OS (side note, how come nobody knows about this trick!!)

Anyways what u want to do is go on eBay and search for either a broken laptop or desktop (preferably a desktop but its a bit more expensive). Make sure the computer has a hard drive with whatever operating system u want and message the seller and double check with the seller that the hard drive has a sata port(there are some other older ports especially with laptops, make sure its sata since sata is generally what u will find on most modern motherboards, is faster and doesn't require a adapter). If everything checks out order the laptop and once it comes remove the hard drive (if u don't know how to open up a laptop there are guides to open most laptops online). Plug in the hard drive and test it out to make sure it works (make sure its not clicking and if possible use a program to check the disk health). If everything is good try to see if the product key is on the laptop or dekstop itself, otherwise there are programs that can check it for u in which case write it down. Wipe the drive completely and reinstall windows using that product key. Now resell the laptop on eBay (since u bought it as broken technically the condition never changed so u can sell it for the same price u bought it, just make sure to say it doesn't have a hard drive) and with that u got a hard drive and operating system roughly for free (windows 10 is $100 and a hard drive is between $50-100.sure the hard drive here is trash but if u want u can always transfer everything to a new better hard drive, either way ur saving at least $100)

With SLI 980Tis I would expect some improvement from the 2600k, no matter its clock speed.
For DDR4, 3000Mhz CL14 is a good target.
7700K wont be much better than Skylake, Intel is using a 3 phase system compared to the old tick tock model. 5-10% per clock would be the most imo.

Xfire is the option to use two cards for the GPU right? As I recall, there isn't a problem if I just use one even if it supports Xfire. Unless you mean I should I pick up a Radeon card instead.

ITX has fewer options and it has limited space, right? I do like small but It seems like I wouldn't be able to fit a capture card in there.

I don't have a set budget.

Either pick a board that supports SLI (tend to cost more) or switch to an AMD card with a Xfire enable board.
Or if you don't plan to run multi GPUs, ignore it.
mATX is perfect if you want a GPU and capture card.

My first encounter with stuff like this is some digital clock I got for free from KFC years ago. But that was very crude and simple. This displays actual colors with high resolution. It still baffles me. It'd be a nice table top.

I'd like to build my parents a long-lasting desktop that can crush anything they throw at it. No gaming necessary, but it might be cool to throw a solid card in there for the hell of it just so I can game on it when I'm visiting them. But that's a plus.

My parents mainly just use the internet, check outlook, MS office stuff, etc. Very basic. But I'd like to get them something fast (and hopefully inexpensive versus buying a pre built machine). Problem is, I only really know the gaming PC parts because that's all I read about.

Essentially I'd like to build them a small, speedy desktop with a gracious amount of storage space at the cheapest price possible. Any quick ideas?

I can't use the other pcie slots due to case and cable management. However my hd7870 works in there as well as the gtx 770.

I tried to boot in safe mode but I still can't get past the bios screen. Is it worth trying the Linux boot?

Ok strange. I accidentally reset my bios to default which wiped out my cpu overclock. Now the pc then booted up in safe mode lol.

Going to see if booting in normal mode will work now...

This is what I just built for my parents. I had a spare copy of Windows 7 laying around, so I used that. I'm fairly certain it will last them for a decade.
