Cool, thanks for the info! Saving final decisions for tomorrow probably so I'll sleep on it.
No probs. Good luck with the build.

Okay, I just found out RAM/Motherboard incompatibility is a thing. I thought putting DDR4 RAMs in a DDR4 board was enough. But apparently, you need to check the full list of compatible RAMs on the board's website or you'd be facing random crashes, lockups, and restarts! Was planning to use a pair of 2400s with an H110 board, but since they will work at 2133 anyway, they are not listed as "compatible." Seems like I gotta go in blind.
Starting to regret building my own case at this point, although, it's my second attempt, and I had no issues with the last one.
Anybody with a 6800k or above recommend getting one and are they easy to get pass 4.0ghz+? I'd like to get a CPU that will last me a while.
Do a lot of multimedia stuff along with some gaming here and there.
Hey guys. I've been thinking of going back to PC gaming. It's been years and I don't know the slightest thing about it now. Anyway I saw an add for a computer in the classifieds, could one of you please give me your thoughts on it? It amounts to $300 USD.
PC ACER Aspire M3202:
Extremely Fast 4 CORE 2.8 Ghz PC, hardly ever used.
No Scratches, Pristine condition.
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 925 2.8GHz
RAM: 4 Gig DDR2 PC2-6400
Chipset: AMD 780G
HDD: 750GB SATA 7200 rpm
DVD: DVD±R/±RW/RAM/±RDL
LAN: 10/100/1000Mbps
OS: Windows Vista Home Premium (Japanese)
Keyboard, Mouse, Speakers (Unopened)
ALSO HDMI,PDF/E, IEEE1394
Original Box, Manuals, Recovery Discs. NO Monitor
Price: 30,000 Yen OBO (Pick Up Only)
They are awesome and will do 4.0Ghz+ easy with a quality cooler. Will play games at max for years to come and the extra cores will be great for productivity. Go for it.
That PC is literally about a decade old and the only gaming you will be doing on it is Minesweeper. Forget $300, I wouldn't take that for free.
If you are serious about getting into PC gaming, read the OP and post a budget. There
are a bunch of people in the thread that can help you out.
Gonna be upgrading my desktop after 4-ish years. This will probably be used for another 4-5 years as well. If anyone has recommendations for substitute pieces (or incompatibilities with the pieces I picked, lol), I'd love to hear it. Price isn't a huge deal but if I can save a decent amount on it but still get the same performance, it'd be nice.
Fractal Design Core 1000 Black Mini-ATX Case
MSI B150M Mobo
i5-6500
G.Skill Ripjaws 16gb ram DDR4 2133
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1060 6gb
Samsung 850 Evo 500gb SSD
EVGA SuperNova 650w PSU
I have a Bluray drive, a capture card, and a 1TB HDD I'm gonna take from my old computer that I'll reuse in this.

Adding an SSD later on won't be an issue assuming you don't mind doing another clean install of Windows in the near future. I would go all in right away and make your new build awesome from day one. The improved snappiness of the overall user experience is nothing to sneeze at.. Assuming you're not going for a massive SSD, they are pretty affordable these days.
I will consider an SSD as essential. Just think about it, your shinning new GPU give you fps boost when you are gaming, but an SSD does the same when you are not and way more noticable.
Don't cut out the SSD, it is an essential component. If I was in your shoes i'd just buy the hd later, or maybe pick up an external drive for all your data.
Is there a thread dedicated to tech support?
Anyway I just upgraded a gtx 770 to 970 and I have the latest drivers but I just keep getting a black screen when I turn the pc on.
I see the first screen where it gives you the option to press delete etc to go into the bios but after that a black screen and if I tap the power button it instantly turns off. The pc only does that if there is an issue
Try putting the 770 back and use driver sweeper to remove all nvidia drivers. You don't need drivers prior to GPU installation, Windows will use a generic driver.
Thanks. What kind of cooler would anyone recommend for it?
Also I would like a monitor that is 20+, 144hz, IPS. I know Asus has one but it's Freesync. I wonder if there is a Gsync version.
I'll be asking a lot more questions when it comes time to order these parts.
Is there any good advice for a headset with built in microphone? Was looking at Razer ManO'war and Logitech G933, are these good? Need to have good mic quality as well.
Just tried that exact same issue.
Motherboard is p6x58d-e Asus and have 850e psu.
770 works fine no issues.
Ask a friend to test the card in their computer for confirmation but all signs point to the card being faulty. Is this a new or used 970?
The biggest deterrent right now pushing me away from building my own in a few months is that I'll absolutely need windows + office, and that's $200+ (!!!) retail. That's an outrageous cost after spending $1000 plus tax on a build.
intels new xpoint is suppose to be super fast but it got delayed. So apparently my case fits 2 more SSDs or HDDs and Im considering getting a 1 TB SSD sometime in the future.
How's the future for SSDs? Will the price decrease, will there be some better technology or something in the "near" future?
Your mad that you have to pay for software? Get office365 free for the first year to help cut down on cost.

I have a 6700K and went with water cooling as it's generally better than air cooling and with less noise...

Try it in another PC, sounds like a possible DOA.
if it is DOA should I still be able to see the bios? and the gfx cards own custom lights light up and fans, it's MSI.
Water coolers are good if you are doing insane overclocking or you are doing an aesthetic build but air coolers are normally quieter and cheaper.
Unless you need it now I think it's best to wait for Zen or Kaby Lake in January. The i5-7500 has a pretty large base clock boost over the 6500.
Its possible that as soon as Windows starts loading the that GPU clocks up and crashes?
You could try a couple of other things to rule out windows:
Create a Ubuntu Live USB stick and boot into it.
Or try safe mode in windows.
We have plugged the monitor into the back of the GPU right? And not the motherboard?
Whats the rest of the system specs?
Which air cooler would you recommend for an ITX build?

yeah I only have display port monitor so its in the right place.

i had my 770 on a slight Overclock but that shouldn't affect the new card should it? will try safe mode.

I want to build this pc that I have in partpicker http://pcpartpicker.com/list/dgwMpb, but will probably use some old parts of my old desktop like the psu, h100i cooler, and 2 980ti. I just need to know what ddr4 ram to buy. I don't pull the trigger because im just waiting for the 7700k at this point and don't even know if this is going to be a huge improvement over my old pc which has a oc i72600k and 16gb ddr3. So don't know what to do.
The same answer as always, the largest cooler that fits.
I have a Silver Arrow SB-E Extreme in my Node 304.
Some things to note:
This is an mATX build.
The board only supports Xfire
What was the budget? Use PCPartpicker, makes it easy for us to modify the build.
You might want to go ITX (smaller than mATX) if you aren't planning to run multiple GPU, which I don't recommend unless buying 2 of the best cards today.
Should be fine, if it runs the 770 overclocked then a 970 should be no problem for the PSU.
Try the Linux Live USB.
Tried different PCIE slots?
Xfire is the option to use two cards for the GPU right? As I recall, there isn't a problem if I just use one even if it supports Xfire. Unless you mean I should I pick up a Radeon card instead.
ITX has fewer options and it has limited space, right? I do like small but It seems like I wouldn't be able to fit a capture card in there.
I don't have a set budget.
WTF? Since when did we have cool shit like this? Its a clear LCD panel by the way. Its like we're getting closer to the Deus Ex future.
Nothing new, literally just remove the back of the screen. We had this at Intel for embedded stuff 4 years ago.
Either pick a board that supports SLI (tend to cost more) or switch to an AMD card with a Xfire enable board.
Or if you don't plan to run multi GPUs, ignore it.
mATX is perfect if you want a GPU and capture card.

I'd like to build my parents a long-lasting desktop that can crush anything they throw at it. No gaming necessary, but it might be cool to throw a solid card in there for the hell of it just so I can game on it when I'm visiting them. But that's a plus.
My parents mainly just use the internet, check outlook, MS office stuff, etc. Very basic. But I'd like to get them something fast (and hopefully inexpensive versus buying a pre built machine). Problem is, I only really know the gaming PC parts because that's all I read about.
Essentially I'd like to build them a small, speedy desktop with a gracious amount of storage space at the cheapest price possible. Any quick ideas?
