I got some advice for you.

1) You don't need to spend anywhere near $400 to get a quality motherboard. This one is $150 cheaper and just as good:

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16813132586

2) Swap the Corsair H110i cooler for a Kraken X61:

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA9H53ZA9685

3) You don't need a 1000w PSU for that build. It would be just fine with half the wattage. Get the 750w version of the PSU for $74 less. It will still be more than you'll ever need even with everything overclocked and still have headroom to give you peace of mind.

https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00EKJQM5E/

4) Swap out the Corsair memory for this G.Skill TridentZ for $37 more. It runs faster and cooler, while also leaving two memory slots open for possible future expansion to 64GB.

www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231973

4) Take the money saved and step up to a GTX 1080 instead of the 1070.

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16814487244

5) Congratulations. You now officially have a high end gaming PC that can play everything maxed at 1440p and most at 4K. Enjoy!

If you want to get technical, it will already hold your 1070 back. Now that doesn't mean you won't still have a good experience or not be able to run everything, but it is still a bottleneck. If you don't believe me, try running some CPU intensive games like Witcher 3 GTA 5, Crysis 3, Arma 3, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Assassin's Creed Syndicate, or Arkham Knight on it. You will notice your CPU is pegged to max whereas GPU usage graphs will wildly fluctuate instead of staying at 99%.

What's up with the prices for those Asus motherboards. I haven't been following PC parts lately but those prices are almost double what I would expect them to be. I think I bought my Asus Maximus VII Hero for like $190

lol I just realized that's Canadian Newegg

Well, I finally upgraded my PC, went from i5 2500k, 8GB DDR3, GTX 970 Gigabyte G1 to

CPU: Intel Core i7-6700K
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212
Motherboard: MSI Z170-A Pro
Memory: Crucial Ballistix Tactical 8GB DDR4-2666
Storage: Boot - Sandisk 256GB SSD
Secondary Storage - Hitachi 4TB 3.5" 7200RPM Hard Drive
Video Card: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1070 8GB G1 8GB
Power Supply: Antec Neo 650W
Operating System: Windows 10 Pro
Sound Card: Asus Xonar D2
Case: Fractal R4

I guess I will be getting other ram module in a few months, but for now it's fine with 8GB. Anyways, this Crucial Ballistix speeds up to DDR4-2666 MT/s, but its latency is kinda high CL17, so I was wondering if this is a good choice or if it would've been better looking for a slower one with lower latency (CL16 or CL15?)

I hope 6700k lives up to its old brother, i5 2500k, it's been a long and good ride, thanks buddy :)

I feel like I spend too much effort talking myself out of a new Titan X.

Do they need special cooling or anything?

The cooler on them isn't the best and can throttle performance, especially if you're overclocking. You can get a hybrid cooler though and fit it yourself.

Hi all,

I have just gotten done purchasing my CPU for my gaming pc build. My question is simple. When I created a new build on PCPartPicker.com with the 6850k with current X99 motherboards, PCPartPicker.com noted that some "Some Intel X99 chipset motherboards may need a BIOS update prior to using Broadwell-E CPUs.

Currently, I am looking at purchasing the MSI X99A SLI Plus Motherboard to pair with my 6850k.

So here is my question:

Will the MSI X99A SLI Plus come pre-installed with the Bios Update to make it compatible with my 6850k?

I am asking this question because if I go on buying this motherboard and the latest bios update isn't pre-installed, and the motherboard won't boot, I don't have another Broadwell CPU to put into the motherboard in order to download the latest BIOS update to make it compatible with the 6850K. I want to make sure that the motherboard I buy has this compatibility issue (with supporting Broadwell-E CPUs) resolved before I go on purchasing the motherboard.

So I would really appreciate an answer to this question.

Thanks!

I could never find the answer for that and went with another moboard. I suspect most from any large retailer would be new enough to have been updated.

So just picked up a 500GB SSD to replace my 120GB one. How easy is it to transfer everything from my old one over to the new one or is it best just to do a fresh install on the new ssd?

I dont really have anything important on my old one anyway other than the OS.

I bought a Dell s271DG that's paired with a 1070. It's cheaper than other monitors with similar specs. It's a nice looking monitor and it doesn't scream "look at this, it's for gamurrrzzzz". 27" 1440p 144hz gsync for $450.

Thanks I will look into the Dell which looks to match up specs wise against the the Asus PG278Q which I was also considering. Not sure the PG279Q is worth the extra money.

I'm looking at that dell as well. The Acer XB270HU is in the same spec range but carries
a higher price. I thought I wanted to go Ultrawide, but I can only really do 2560x1080 in 21:9 for a decent price.

I've had my eye on ultra wide for a while and I saw a 2560x1080 next to a 3440x1440 in a store.

My God what a difference. In a game you may not notice it as much but at 1080 the desktop looks like a dumpster fire.

3440x1440 is absolutely worth the extra $$ imo

Not sure if this is a good place to ask, but I just picked up an MSI GTX 1070 Gaming X and wondering how worthwhile it is to overclock if I'm only running at 1080p, and what sort of settings should I be aiming for in the overclock?

Cheers!

Is there a performance difference running 4 x 4GB sticks of memory, compared to 2 x 8GB?

Depends on if the board is dual or quad channel, though it should be noted than even if it is a quad channel motherboard, you'll be using more power in exchange for a very slight increase in performance that doesn't apply to all programs. Also worth noting is that you'll be paying more for the same amount of RAM, making the only substantial benefit for running 4 RAM sticks being a decrease in the chance of a bad stick going from 50% to 25% and a minor performance increase in some applications.

Can anyone find a 4GB 470/480 <$200? I thought the 4GB 470 was supposed to retail for $150?

Nope, that's what everyone speculated, but the cheapest 470 goes for about $190 from PowerColor and it's sold out on Newegg.

I don't think AMD ever confirmed a price up until launch.

I don't think you're gonna find prices that low any time soon. I ended up paying $280 for Sapphire Nitro+ 4GB. Of course we have one of the weakest currencies in the world so, part of the ridiculous price is due to that.

It's finally finished. Finally got the last case fan installed and found out I hadn't removed the plastic from the top of the GPU. :p

9TGUbiz.jpg

Specs:

Win10 Home 64 bit
ASUS X99/USB 3.1 mobo
GTX 1080 Strix OC Edition
i7-5820k 4,0 GHz OC'd
32 GB DDR4-2667 RAM.

I upgraded from a GTX 690, 12 GB RAM DDR3-665 and i7-2600.

The PSU is from the old PC, it's a HX 1050 80 Plus, so no need to upgrade that.

The big beast in there is the Noctua NH-D15 cooler.

Suprisingly, even with that big ass CPU cooler and the GPU there's still a lot of space left.

Shouldn't the PSU fan be facing down?

For 1080p gtx1070 sounds like it should be enough without OC:ing.
Do you get fps you want? If not and GPU is bottlenecking then you go and OC it.
If your GPU usage is not high then something else bottlenecks and OCing GPU doesnt help.

3000 CL15
2666 CL14
2400 CL13
2133 CL12

That's usually one higher CL than most kits can do.

2666 CL17 -> May as well buy 2133 CL12.
If you have a Z170 board then try to tighten the timings and push the DRAM Volts to 1.3v.

Itching hard to upgrade, but I'm not CPU limited despite my 4930k (6 core @ 4.5) being a bit long, and OG Titan X still giving me 60+ at 1440p, and 4k60 @ 4k in some titles.

Blehhhhh

Isn't the cpu fan facing the wrong way, sucking in the hot air from the GPU now? I mean probably not 'the wrong way', but it looks suboptimal.

It's actually not. The tech guy who helped me build it teached me about there was this sign on the fans which said "Up" with an arrow and that I had to use it in a particular way.

It doesn't matter if it faces up or down, you can orientate it both ways.

It's beter to orientate it down if you're not putting it on a carpet

Can you move the GPU down a slot or two to help with the movement of air?

I'm not sure if it applies, but I have the ASUS 1070 Strix and I haven't overclocked it yet. I only have a 1080p monitor and so far, its taking everything I'm throwing at it even the "not-so-optimized" Deus Ex. Never dips below 60fps and temps max at 70 degrees. In my card's program (GPU tweak), I use the default Gaming profile.

Good god I need a monitor. This old pos Samsung I have hooked to my computer is pretty bad. It is nice to start up the BF1 beta running 200 fps on Ultra straight out the box. I can really see what I've been missing out on consoles.

Not really PC related, but what kind of desk are people using. I need something so I can sit my monitor and PC on top of it. No idea. I'm 42 so I don't need a glitzy desk.

That arrow just denotes which direction the fans move air, rather than the direction the heatsink has to be in.

Never seen a cooler fitted that way. I'm sure it will work, does it have an exhaust fan on the top like the HAF X? It does look really weird though. The arrows on the fans just indicate the direction of the airflow. I guess if it says up though...

Still, I would have mounted it towards the exhaust fan on the back, and to avoid dust and potential nuts and bolts falling through the grate I would have mounted the PSU fan facing down.

Day before yesterday my PC blew uo. Finally. So I built new one today.

6600k
Asus Z170i
16GB Fury RAM
Noctua 12S
BeQuiet 500W
Define Nano S

The only thing I dragged over from my old rig is the GTX660.

For now, it'll do it. But I think I might be buying a 1060 soon.

I guess there will be some better offers in a couple of days/weeks right? Why is there no offer on a nVidia Card + BF1 key? There is just a shitty Paragon ingame money offer here in Germany.

My question would be: Wait and get a 1060 when the price is right (6GB ofc)? Or buy a 470 right now?

Yeah it'll work but unoptimised.
Should be mounted to take air from the front intakes and pass out the rear exhaust.

Does it make sense to upgrade to the 1080 if I have a Titan X Maxwell? I game in 4K and use the Vive. I heard its supposedly better for VR but I dont know how or why.

It depends on how much you can get for your Titan X Maxwell. I sold mine for $760 so it pretty much would have been free to get into a 1080. Still opted to go for Titan X Pascal so I would have a noticeable performance jump and run crazy super sampling on the Vive while never dropping a frame. :D

Edit: is that a K70 as well? I have one of those too. I wear headphones all the time though, X2's

Haha, yeah it's a K70. It seems a lot of enthusiasts gravitate towards the same or similar parts.

I was considering the 28" due to superior PPI, but decided on the 32" so I wouldn't have to use any scaling in Windows in case of tiny icons or text.

Guys need your help.
built the PC with mentioned above parts, but having booting issues, it sometimes loops boot after 3 seconds, or it will stabilize but the keyboard mouse and screen wont load, or i press power button and nothing happens.i A couple of times it managed to properly load everything, but when tried to open BIOS it was frozen, and when i restarted it went back to looping boot.
I'm pretty sure i connected everything well, don't know what i could do wrong to produce such results. before i send this to a computer lab, i was thinking maybe the power supply unit is not enough for this setup? the manufacturer states that:

"To meet expansion requirements, it is recommended that a power supply that can withstand high power consumption be used (500W or greater). If a power supply is used that does not provide the required power, the result can lead to an unstable or unbootable system."

since i have a 450w PSU, was wondering if my problems match this exact problem?
Any other ideas how to trouble shoot or find the exact problem will be much appreciated
