Haha, yeah it's a K70. It seems a lot of enthusiasts gravitate towards the same or similar parts.

I was considering the 28" due to superior PPI, but decided on the 32" so I wouldn't have to use any scaling in Windows in case of tiny icons or text.

I don't use scaling and I have found it fine.

May as well post a pic of my set up, it was still a work in progress and messy in this picture because as well as moving stuff I had been doing some work at home (fixing Macbooks)

Thanks for the help choosing the Cooler Master 212 Hyper X, gaf. Even overclocking my 6600k to 4.3GHz, I can't get the thing above 44 degrees under heavy load which is amazing.

I did have the most tremendous difficulty with something though and I wanted to put it out there because I couldn't find help with this myself. Once assembled, my system kept freezing and requiring a hard reset, especially during gameplay. After days of trouble-shooting and freaking out, the solution was simply disabling write caching for my ssd. I think an application reading at the same time the OS is writing was causing the freezes, along with some unfortunate motherboard chipset/IRST driver combination. It was particularly hard to track down to being the SSD because the SSD would instantly stop working when it happened so there were no events logged and being a software issue, the drives would check perfectly.

This is with a Gigabyte Z170 D3H and both a Crucial BX100 and the Samsung 850 Evo as OS drives.

Anyway, I'm very happy with my system now; it's beautiful too--all black and white case and components with copper trim--and I'm thankful to gaf for all the advice and assistance. Keep up the good work!

Guys need your help.
built the PC with mentioned above parts, but having booting issues, it sometimes loops boot after 3 seconds, or it will stabilize but the keyboard mouse and screen wont load, or i press power button and nothing happens.i A couple of times it managed to properly load everything, but when tried to open BIOS it was frozen, and when i restarted it went back to looping boot.
I'm pretty sure i connected everything well, don't know what i could do wrong to produce such results. before i send this to a computer lab, i was thinking maybe the power supply unit is not enough for this setup? the manufacturer states that:

"To meet expansion requirements, it is recommended that a power supply that can withstand high power consumption be used (500W or greater). If a power supply is used that does not provide the required power, the result can lead to an unstable or unbootable system."

since i have a 450w PSU, was wondering if my problems match this exact problem?
Any other ideas how to trouble shoot or find the exact problem will be much appreciated
Try a different PSU. Then work from there. Also make sure everything is seated correctly, ram, gpu, cpu.

I think I'm going to pull the trigger on this tonight. I have discount codes for the RAM and the Noctua that expire tonight. The only thing that I'm worried about right now is the RAM clearance and the Noctua. I'm set on 2x16GB for my RAM so I can expand in the future to 64 at minimal cost. Is there a set that is better than what I have selected?

Hi all,

I'm looking for recommendations on a new power supply anywhere in the 650 to 750w range (my current XFX 650 Pro has started to become really noisy and I'd rather just replace it than fiddle with it).

Yeah it'll work but unoptimised.
Should be mounted to take air from the front intakes and pass out the rear exhaust.

I hope you didn't pay for that persons service.

For real.

Seasonic 650 or 750 Titanium.

I use my rig exclusively with a 55" TV. Love it.

That just Phillips Hue strip lights?

Would it be a waste of money putting a Nvidia GTX 1070 in a computer with an i7 3770? Would a 1060 be a better fit?

Not a waste at all. That chip is more than capable.

That's comparable to my W3690 (i7-990x) and I get 14,000+ fire strike score without any overclock. 15,000+ when I OC both CPU and GPU.

Was only getting around 10,000 with an OC'd 1060, barely broke 11,000 with the CPU @ 4Ghz.

I can run Witcher 3 on Ultra(mostly) @ 60-80fps 1920x1200

I'm assuming you meant Seasonic? Those look great but a little more than I was looking to spend. Are there any red flags about the EVGA GQ series? The 650w is $69.99 on Newegg and has pretty good reviews from what I can tell.

I'm looking into getting a new monitor, preferably 1920x1080 on a $200 CAD (pre-tax) budget. I'm looking to set it up in my dorm, will definitely be hooking up my PS4 to it. Does anyone have any recommendations? I know to avoid TN panels, but don't know much beyond that.

Thanks!

I don't want to invest a lot of money into my friend's PC- 2500k @ 4.5GHz/8GB/GTX 295, Win 10. 1440p display.

She's a light gamer. Would a 2GB RX 460 be an improvement over the GTX 295 (remember it's a dual-GPU card)?

Hey, folks!

Was wondering if I'd be able to gather opinions/expertise on this build?

Like what performance to expect and if the components complement each other, etc. Still learning about the ins and outs and have a long way to go. Was originally going to go for a 1060 but for the extra hundred or so seems worth it for the performance boost. Although, what's with the various versions of the chipset from the likes of GIGABYTE, EVGA, ASUS, MSI, etc? Small price differences and I'm not sure why, haha!

Also, if anyone could recommend a case that would have room for future upgrades and looks nice plus anything else necessary it'd be much appreciated (bar speakers, keyboard, mouse, monitor - they'll be purchased at a later date.)

Using PC Part Picker as a reference but will be most likely purchasing everything from Newegg Ireland which has all the above clocking in at just over €1000 including shipping.

I'd like to put together a small desktop that I can easily move around if need be (I travel alot and already have a laptop for work).

Current spec: nothing
Budget: £450 in UK (excluding monitor)
Use: Light Gaming 3, Gaming 4, Emulation 1, Video Editing 1, Streaming games in HD 1, 3D/Model work 2, General Usage 4, programing 5.
Resolution: 1080p
Games: Overwatch , Civ5, Diablo 3, Battlefield 4, witcher 3
Looking to reuse any parts: OS, Keyboard, Mouse
When will you build: Next 2 months
Will you be overclocking: Likely

Any suggestions?

Yeah, I did. Autocorrect fucked me.

Think about the PSU this way: it's the one component that every other component relies on.

If your GPU shits the bed, no biggie. If your RAM craps out, swap it. If your PSU dies, it can take everything else out with it. Don't skimp on the PSU.

Cool...how far away from it do you sit?

For browsing and casual games, like 7ft. For sweaty, swearing at my teammates games like 4-5ft.

I'll be disassembling my 1-month old pc tomorrow for cleaning and replacement of thermal glue. I'm now looking for something to remove the old glue; I heard a high concentrate isopropyl alcohol is enough, anyone have other suggestions? I'll be replacing the glue (default glue that came with CM 212 Evo) with Antec's since it's the overall choice from what I've read. I'll be going for better cable management this time too. I might add an extra fan and a cheap hdd if I have the budget.

2GB just doesn't cut it even for some modern indies. Get at least the 4GB RX 470 or wait for the 4GB GTX 1050.

I just wipe old thermal paste with a plain tissue. After done plenty, I notice, maybe, at most, a few degrees difference using alcohol and other exotic cleaning stuff. Not worth the time and hassle unless you are into extreme OC and want the lowest temps possible.

He could also check out some reviews over at Jonnyguru.

Most if not all XFX PSUs are made by Seasonic anyways, same for PC Power and Cooling.

One thing I found important to note in regards to a power supply purchase is to ignore the brand listed on the box but rather find out who actually manufactured the unit itself.

For example some Corsair units are Channel Well and Seasonics which is good, whereas RM series OEM is Hipro / Chicory which I don't recommend.

Like years ago everyone used to rate Antec PSUs highly because they were also sourced by Seasonic, until they used another OEM for their units. It wasn't the fact that Antec wasn't good anymore, but rather the supplier for the unit just wasn't up to standards.

The Rosewill PSU in my PC was made by SuperFlower which are comparable to Seasonic in terms of reliability. Yeah I generally don't pay attention to the brand but focus more on the OEM.

Like you said the PSU is probably the most important component in a PC, since a poor power regulation can have some catastrophic effects on other stuff inside your case, Worse still some of the cheaper PSUs skim out on features. Lacking a MOV (Metal Oxide Varistor, the thing that makes surge protectors do their job), Or things OCP / UCP (Over / Under Current Protection)

Many a budget PSU cuts out this stuff out which is basically asking the buyer to take the risk of having their equipment being taken out due to the power being suddenly cut such as a during a brown or blackout, or worse their home wiring being overloaded due to a lightning strike during a storm.

Even more so when some PSUs falsify the actual rated wattage it can deliver (There is a review over at Jonnyguru showcasing a PSU that is advertised as a 500w unit but can't even provide more than 350w or something, and another review of a PSU catching flame and setting the computer on fire)

One should never cheap out on the Power Supply.

Why you disassembling it after a month for? I see no reason to, just blow it out, if it even needs it.

I've been reading too much bad stuff with the default glue that came with the EVO 212 cooler. Also, I'm getting paranoid since I'm getting 60-70degrees temps while gaming. Since I'm replacing the glue, might as well disassemble it, not really 100% I'll leave the mem sticks and cpu on. Also, I just noticed the auxiliary ports on the front of my case are not working.

Really? How bad is Corsair RM850 compared to CS850?

CS850 OEM is Great Well which make decent units. It's just Hipro / Chicory have some spotty history.

Hardware Secrets and Jonnyguru reviews are my prefered recommendation since they generally take the units apart during their review process to see what the fan makes are, who constructed the units, and thoroughly test to see if they can truly deliver their advertised rated power delivery within the ATX specifications, confirm if they stay within their stated efficiency (i.e a Gold unit actually delivering Gold rated efficiency and not actually being a Silver or worse a Bronze rated unit due to failed efficiency testing)

It looks fine. I'd probably use faster RAM as the price difference should be negligable. There's little difference between most manufacturers so people will generally pick what they like the look of the most. For example, I'd have the EVGA 1070 as most of them look ridiculous but the EVGA one looks relatively restrained.

Case wise, again it's generally a personal choice, but I certainly wouldn't skimp out on it. I'm particularly partial to the NZXT S340.

This is what I'd go for myself, but it isn't based on Newegg Ireland so I don't know how much more or less it would be fore you.

Ahh, sorry about that. Some people over at tomshardware keep calling it glue. Anyway, thanks for the temps comment. I have until tomorrow to decide to go with it or just fix the cables and new components.

If the power supply isn't giving you any issues, No. What I mean by issues is if your OC'd are stable, your computer isn't experiencing random shutdowns, or anything that would stem from inadequate power issues.

Generally the higher end units 700+ watts and above are usually have more safety features put into them.

Although to be perfectly honest, not many PCs nowadays would actually utilize an 850 watt unit to maximum capacity outside of specific setups such as a SLI / Crossfire with a ton of storage drives and whatnot.

One thing I'm grateful for most chip makers nowadays is making things more energy efficient while also increasing power gains.

A common misconception people made years ago looking at the box of a GPU power requirements and seeing it needed 500 watts and assuming that was just the requirements for the card, and not the recommendation for the entire computer system.

For example my Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 1070 as per the manufacturer's recommendation wants a 500w power supply.

However even at maximum load the card wouldn't draw more than 280 watts from the wall. This definitely wasn't the case years ago when you consider GPUs along the lines of something like the GTX 295.

Yeah, it's great seeing these big improvements in efficiency. Every time I upgrade my components they seem to require less and less.

Anyway, I looked up RM850 on JohnyGuru and they seemed quite happy with it actually.

Presonus Eris 4.5
Audioengine A2
M-Audio AV40

Presonus Eris is usually around $199 but $174 on Amazon at the moment. I bought this pair for my wife a few months ago and she loves it.
M-Audio is the cheapest of the three at around $150. Its little brother, the AV32 (previously AV30) is $79 right now on Amazon.

Tried it. Very annoying as I sit relatively far from the TV and not a lot of sites are easy to read in the very large format.
