50% off for a used component? Would love to know where I can get my PC parts for that much.

Anyways, how much should it be priced at all together? Since you guys are dwelling on the CPU/mobo, an i5-6600 would be comparable performance to the my 2600k @ 4.5Ghz (at least based on this video). Going on PCPartpicker, I see the cheapest 6600 is about $219 and the cheapest 1151 mobo is about $54. So that's $272 for modern parts vs $220 for my older parts. $52 difference for around the same performance. Factoring new vs. used, I'd take off another $68 ($25% of $272) from my build's subtotal. Asking $900 and selling for $825 still seems fair to me.
The CPU is still from 5 years ago, any one who knows what you have will not pay anywhere near what they can get a new gen CPU for. It's your stuff, sell it for what you want.

So, with the consoles pushing 4K(inda) and HDR as the new hotness what is on the horizon for PC displays? HDR seems like a huge gimmick to me.

Instead of 2160p displays I'd rather have crazy AA and VFX; lighting, shadows, particles out the butt at 1080p but what do I know. I already feel like an old person with how tiny text is on a 24" 1080p monitor.

I kinda love 1440p as a sweet spot. Everything's really crisp and you can always supersample if you've got some overhead. Pity we probably won't see any HDR monitors under 4K.

I'm getting this message on PC Part Picker "The NZXT Phantom 410 (White) ATX Mid Tower Case supports video cards up to 305mm long, but video cards over 230mm may block drive bays. Since the Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1070 8GB G1 Gaming Video Card is 280mm long, some drive bays may not be usable."

Is this something I should be concerned about? I've purchased all of the parts for my first build, except for the case. I'm probably going to go for either the Phantom 410 (seriously the best looking case ever) or the NZXT H440 Mid Tower. Any advice for picking cases?
This is the inside of the case:

innerside1.jpg

As you can see, the graphics card would be seated at about mid-height, and there's a drive cage on the right side which limits the maximum length of the card you can fit.

In order to fit a bigger card (such as your 1070), you would have to remove that drive cage. It's easy to do, but it will limit the number of drives you can fit in the chassis as you lose those drive bays.

Question;

Currently running an i3 6100 and GTX 950 and looking to upgrade something for the new line of Xbox games (Forza, Gears, ReCore, Halo 5 Forge etc)

I am thinking of a new CPU and GPU but can't really afford both right now. What is my best option to only get one right now?

I was thinking of a 1060 or 470 8GB for GPU and a i5 (something) for CPU.

I can run Forza Apex at the moment but experience stuttering alot. I'd like to run the above games at decent settings at 1080p.

A new GPU would be the first thing, as the GTX 950 is quite weak. It would ideal to go up to a Core i5 at some point, but changing the graphics card will make a much greater difference than changing the CPU.

Hey guys I am currently just about to build a new pc, just wondering on your take for:

cpu: Intel Core i5 6600K
ssd: Samsung 750 EVO 500GB SSD
graphics: ASUS GeForce GTX 1060 Turbo 6GB
mobo: Gigabyte B150N Phoenix WiFi Mini ITX Motherboard
ram: Kingston HyperX Fury HX424C15FBK2/8 8GB (2x4GB) DDR4
psu: 500W Power Supply
case: Be Quiet! Silent Base 600 Case with Window Orange

This is my first build and want to make sure everything will work and not blow up. Is 500W enough ?

I have a budget, so stuff like memory upgrades can wait

Here's the thing, you're choosing a mITX board for a full ATX case, which doesn't really make sense, that board is tiny compared to the case, has less PCI slots, less room for upgrades in general. If you're going to be upgrading memory or overclocking at all in the future you need a z170 chipset mobo as well.

This is the route I recommend taking. Upgrade to another 8gb stick of RAM in the future if you want, or buy two 4gb sticks now. 2400mhz is plenty fast enough.

It mostly depends on how you want to expand your storage. If you don't plan on adding another HDD in your future, then there's no need to worry about it. I'm not sure on the specifics of the 410, but I know the H440 shouldn't interfere with the card at all.

Question for rotating a Noctua NH-D15 cooler: Do I have to take everything off like I need to get rid of the cooler paste too and replace it with another doze of paste or is it simplier?

Yeah I was thinking the same too. Figured i'd still ask on here first.

What's a good 1080p IPS 144hz monitor. I'm going to use it as my second.

Not IPS, but Samsung's upcoming VA model CFG70 (1080p, 144hz FreeSync) is due for October and might be worth waiting for as they claim their quantum dot technology will enable a wider (125% of sRGB) color gamut than any previous TN and VA monitors. If the stars align it will have all the strengths of VA, TN and IPS combined.

I'm worried I didn't install my cpu cooler properly or didn't use enough thermal paste, I'm getting around 35°c idle on my 6700K with a 212 evo installed, and boy the source 530 is huge, I was using a dell xps 8700 before it. I do have it overclocked, I think ez tweaking or whatever it was called, increased the overclock to 13% on Z170-A says I'm getting 4.5 on core 1 really.

Take the cooler off. Clean CPU IHS and cooler baseplate with isopropyl. Reinstall cooler so that it's blowing air across its towers toward the rear exhaust. Disregard any future advice from the "tech guy" who installed it vertically.

35C idle isn't necessarily terrible depending on your build and ambient temperature, but you're most likely over-volted. Find a Skylake over clocking guide for your motherboard and do it the right way.

Ok, the the fan in the back of the case is better than the one on the top which the cooler fans are pointing at?

Hey everyone! I need a new video card, my old one died. I'm probably gonna go the 1070 or 1080 route, but should I seek out a specific manufacturer? What's a Founder's Edition? Is that a good thing or a bad thing? Sorry, I'm a little clueless, and help would be appreciated. Thanks GAF!

Founder's Edition is the reference model. Do not get that.
All after market cards are more or less the same. Negligible fps and cooling advantages here and there, but nothing a normal user would notice or mind. Get whichever you can find at a reasonable price.

Probably not, but the front of the cooler would be aimed at the intake fans on the front of the case improving overall airflow instead of sucking up the hot air from your gpu/psu. It also wouldn't look as silly.

Don't forget to add more thermal compound before you replace the cooler. Look up a YouTube video to see how much to apply, it probably isn't anywhere near as much as you think. You really don't want it oozing out the sides.

My co-worker is selling a 980ti graphics card for $400.00 he's had it for 5 months, Good buy or should I pass up on it? I'm building my first PC with in the next two months.

I just sold one for 300 in ye olde English pounds. I wouldn't have any idea what they go for in the US.

They're still great cards, as long as you don't expect good 4K performance and it isn't a reference card.

okay, I've been thinking twice about buying it man. I'm sure I can get a better deal.

I went to the shop where I bought my parts last month and I'm so f*cking pissed about their business practices. I bought my 1070 for approx. $700, after one month it's $580. F*ck it, I'll be buying shit in Hong Kong in the future.

In any case, I still bought a 3.5" HDD from them today and an extra fan. They didn't have WD Blue 1TB, so I got a Seagate. Even though I had bad experiences with Seagate, I bought it. That will be my last purchase from that shop.

I'm wanting to dip my toes into PC gaming for the first time since `I was a kid. Would £600 ($800)ish be a realistic budget for a decent PC which could play WoW at top settings and other modern games at lower settings?

I'm really hesitant to build by own because I just know I'd fuck it it up somehow, but I'm assuming this is the only realistic way to get a decent PC on a small budget.

You absolutely can for that price and you should try to build it yourself. I did my first ever the other week. Liquid cooled and all, and cut it on and it worked with no issues. I'm happy about that. It's easy. I just watched a bunch of different youtube channels to get a frame of reference.

You could probably even find a build guide on YouTube for around the budget you have. PC's are just slightly harder to put together than a Kinda egg toy now with the amount of online resources available.

Does anyone have a particular PCI Bluetooth/wifi combo adaptor they'd recommend? (Fairly certain my mobo only has one PCI-e slot so it'll have to be PCI if such a thing exists)

Dell 27" Is 144hz 1440p gsync for around $540. Acer sometimes has a refurb XB270HU on it's ebay site for $360

Having a really annoying problem. Since updating to the latest driver my fps is not being limited in games where you can choose: 3840 × 2160 - 60.

Now my fps is going above 60, stopping gysync from working. It was fine before installing the Titan.

Trying to make sense out of the 4K talk. For Black Ops 3 on PC, if I had a 4K monitor with resolution of 3840 by 2160 and a graphics card such as the GTX 1080, could I ultimately play Black Ops 3 in true 4K resolution at 60 FPS?

Ok, the the fan in the back of the case is better than the one on the top which the cooler fans are pointing at?

Another poster answered already, but for your purposes yes. You want the cooler to have an ample supply of cool air, so the intake fans should be pulling air from the front of your case and pushing that air across your cooler towers toward the rear exhaust.

I have the same settings as your describe here and I'm getting 28C - 30C while browsing gaf and my room is set to 29.4C

What is your vcore at? Automatic settings are always bad. It is probably like at 1.45v or something crazy.

Also, just use a pea or rice size of thermal paste. You don't want a lot. You are just trying to fill gaps that aren't touching the cpu.
