I'm confused about game settings. My GeForce exp never works and won't ever apply settings . Just got a 1060 but same deal. Where do you guys go to adjust settings? Just Nvidia control panel ? And then how do you know what settings are best like fxaa, etc ? Trial and error ? Guides ? Favorite s?

I use this guide for Nvidia Control Panel: http://www.tweakguides.com/NVFORCE_5.html

And I don't use GeForce Experience to tweak any settings, I go into options in each game and adjust settings from there. I use FXAA and don't really touch MSAA (just left it as whatever the default is), since I read somewhere that MSAA is kinda taxing on systems. I might be wrong, though.

So I've just ordered an Asus Rog G20CB with the i7-4790 it unfortunately only comes with the GTX 950. I am going to upgrade the GPU to the RX 480 reference card (so it blows air out the back panel) but I was wondering about the dual PSU's.

Do these automatically work when I plug them in or do u have to mess with the motherboards pins? I'm seeing conflicting info on YouTube and thought this would be the best place to ask. Also is there any cases I can switch the Mobo etc too? It'll be a pain but is it doable?

If I were you i would uninstall that geforce exp and never touch it again.

thanks a lot, sounds good. but what if the game only has limited settings? Like for example elite dangerous only has like 10 settings, I guess the rest is just automatic or whatever... I am guessing that the devs choose how many options to give you to setup stuff.

If I were you i would uninstall that geforce exp and never touch it again.

lol I know its totally useless, but even if it would let me tweak individual games manually it would be better. it just says "cant do shit on this pc" basically and my pc is new...

not sure if it's going to make a difference but it's the exact card. also, why do you recommend a 1070? Will I get better performance?

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00YDAYOK0/?tag=neogaf0e-20
Newest architecture, mainly. The 1070 also has 8gb of vram vs 6. If you were getting it for like $300, I'd say go for it, but $400 will literally buy you a new 1070.

You can look at benchmarks between the cards but IIRC they're comparable. Pascal overclocks like crazy though.
That sounds weird. Anything else close to? Anything from Asus?

Other than that Samsung monitor someone else replied with that's releasing, most 1080p 144 will be TN.

Asus has a few 1080p 144hz, but they are all TN.

So, what is a good budget wireless headset w/ mic? Hoping to be able to use it on the PS4 aswell as the PC.

I am in the UK if that helps.

Good Question I'm looking for one myself I was recommend the Asus Cerberus or the Logitech G230 or G430 not tired them yet... let me know what you find.

Okay thanks for the info. What's the difference between an EVGA card and a MSI card? I can get the MSI 980 to for $399.99 at B&H

I want to OC my 4770k which is currently at 3.5ghz to 4.0 ghz. Is this a difficult process? Anyone have a good instructional link in how to go about it?

What motherboard? Find a Haswell overclocking guide for your motherboard on overclock.net.

35C idle isn't necessarily terrible depending on your build and ambient temperature, but you're most likely over-volted. Find a Skylake over clocking guide for your motherboard and do it the right way.

I have the same settings as your describe here and I'm getting 28C - 30C while browsing gaf and my room is set to 29.4C

What is your vcore at? Automatic settings are always bad. It is probably like at 1.45v or something crazy.

Also, just use a pea or rice size of thermal paste. You don't want a lot. You are just trying to fill gaps that aren't touching the cpu.

While building from Android studio its like that, while loading a page I see a spike to 40-50 on the package before drop to 30-35ish. I turned down the overclocking to 5% according to ASUS's software.

1.335v is what it should be around. You can see it spikes to 1.45v, which is pretty bad.

I don't use that program, I believe VID is just what your cpu says it needs at the mhz setting and isn't the actual voltage.

VCore will tell you what voltage is actually being delivered to the cpu.

Any tips for a first timer?
I'm ready to start building my PC tomorrow, and I'm a bit nervous.

Also, what program do you guys recommend for temp, and fps monitoring? Preferably something that isn't intrusive.

So I'm lookin to save a bit more money on a new pc. I'm wondering if I can use a 450 Watt power supply with these new motherboards. I know that gfx cards these days require that as a minimum amount, but I'm content with my GeForce 750. In that case all I need would be a processor, motherboard, and ram. This is quite the conundrum of upgrading my PC slowly without going all out on parts.

Here's the thing, you're choosing a mITX board for a full ATX case, which doesn't really make sense, that board is tiny compared to the case, has less PCI slots, less room for upgrades in general. If you're going to be upgrading memory or overclocking at all in the future you need a z170 chipset mobo as well.

This is the route I recommend taking. Upgrade to another 8gb stick of RAM in the future if you want, or buy two 4gb sticks now. 2400mhz is plenty fast enough.

Hey all, what is the best GTX 1060 on the market right now for less than $300?

Saw this GIGABYTE and was tempted.

Another option is this MSI card.

EVGA GTX 1060 SC is what I have. It's pretty good for a single fan design and has a good heatsink. Without OCing, Boost 3.0 takes my card to 2000 MHz. May be a bit noiser than the MSI, but if you use headphones you'll never notice. It's cheaper, and EVGA has excellent customer support as well.

Howdy PC thread, we just moved into a new apartment and out Router's wifi wont reach through the walls to my sons bedroom. Its an older (6 years-ish) Dlink which is in the living room at my PC.

So we assume its the concrete walls doing this so any suggestion on a new router to fix this problem or any tips at all? We (well I) was looking into upgrading out router regardless.

I have a question regarding Steam files migration to another hdd. I copied all installation files to the new hdd and I'm ready to delete all the installation files except for Steamapps and Steam.exe. Will my save files be safe? I turned on Steam's cloud backup too for good measure.

Try moving it to a higher position (think of it as a light which needs to light up the whole space).

Download the Wifi Analyzer app to a Android phone. Change the router's 2.4 GHz channel from 'Auto' to the channel with the least competition from your neighbors.

Or, plug a range extender in the hallway outside of your son's door. (make sure it's the exact same SSID and password)

[EDIT] If you do upgrade use the original router in Bridge Mode as a range extender.

This unfortunately doesn't help us because it mostly only for Ipad and Wii U use and Powerline adapters don't seem to help that since neither use ethernet, also if it was the case :( I would just run a Ethernet cable down the hall.

Then powerline adapter to wireless access point.

Do not use software to overclock.
Need to see vcore, not vid.

Been trying to make a parts list for someone in the United States and, well, the video card is kind of a sticking point: wait for a GTX 1050, settle for a 950, or wait for the 1060 3 GB to price drop enough. I'm leaning towards 1060 price drop at the moment, but I'm curious about your opinions.

Also, i3-6100 vs i5-6400. This also influences the prices enough to flip between the 1060 and the 950 respectively. I'm not sure how much video card he needs though.

Yes, the monitor and keyboard are there. It needs to be in the budget.

There's no HDD as he already has one 1TB WD Blue he'll be installing.

Frankly, I don't think I know how to build low end while not feeling too awful.

Yes, until further notice.
It would be pretty difficult to make something that's really good for that budget. If it was up to me I'd spring for the i5 and get something low-end like an R7 360 as a stop gap, then save up for a GTX 1060 6GB. That way you can get a better board and an SSD for much better performance as a base unit (although $3 over budget).

If that isn't an option however, then I would choose the i3 and get a GTX 1060 3GB, as the gaming performance would be massively better than an i5 with a GTX 950.

You have ram listed twice. If that's not a mistake, i've read that buying a single kit can yield better performance. A 2x4 8gb kit is basically the same price and I've heard they pair them based on performance.

I just tested The Witcher 3 - Game of the Year Edition on my build. 50 fps (with very rare dips to mid 40s) on ultra with hairworks off at 2560x1080! Pretty sure I could easily hit 60 fps at 1080p. This is with no OC. I'm more than pleased.

Here's my build:
MSI H110M Pro-VD
i3 6100
8GB DDR4 cl14 at 2133Mhz
Sapphire RX 470 Nitro+ 4GB

470 can do wonders as a budget card, apparently. The game quit once unexpectedly (80+°c on gfx card), but after setting the fan speed curve in MSI Afterburner, I had no issues whatsoever. Yay!

It's finally finished. Finally got the last case fan installed and found out I hadn't removed the plastic from the top of the GPU. :p

9TGUbiz.jpg

Specs:

Win10 Home 64 bit
ASUS X99/USB 3.1 mobo
GTX 1080 Strix OC Edition
i7-5820k 4,0 GHz OC'd
32 GB DDR4-2667 RAM.

I upgraded from a GTX 690, 12 GB RAM DDR3-665 and i7-2600.

The PSU is from the old PC, it's a HX 1050 80 Plus, so no need to upgrade that.

The big beast in there is the Noctua NH-D15 cooler.

Suprisingly, even with that big ass CPU cooler and the GPU there's still a lot of space left.

I believe you would get better temperatures if you the spin the CPU cooler 90 degrees and flip over the PSU,

Thanks. After noticing a preference with a GeForce, and neither i5 option being more than 50% faster than the i3 (and always having worse single-thread), I've revised the part list to use a 1060 3GB in place of the 950, in exchange for an i3. Hopefully that'll be all he'll be needing! (Use the same link.)

Okay thanks for the info. What's the difference between an EVGA card and a MSI card? I can get the MSI 980 to for $399.99 at B&H

Not a lot of difference between the brands from a performance standpoint. EVGA is touted to have the best customer service for Nvidia cards. I've been buy their cards myself the past 5-6 years.

A 980 for $400 is not a good buy. There is a difference between the 980 and the 980Ti.

If the increased price above $400 for a 1070 is too much, I would try to haggle with your friend to bring the price down. Yes, he only bought it a couple months ago but it's a year old from launch and the 10 series is out.

That's about $768 US.

Context: I'd like to play Overwatch and Legion on High or Ultra at high frame rates comfortably, and don't have the patience or mind for building a rig from scratch myself, so I'm comfortable shelling out a bit extra to buy a pre-assembled rig and throw in an SSD or better video card myself down the road.

I'd like to know if this is a fair price for a pre-built rig or a big ripoff. Thanks!

Cool. Yeah pick the case you like! I would go for at least 4 fans. It comes with two already, so get two more for the top, blowing up and out of the case.

Depends on how far away from it you sit. I sit around a meter away from mine and it's perfect at that distance. If you need something that can fill your entire field of view, you're gonna need something bigger, though.

What's on the horizon for video cards?

I am thinking of aiming for either a 480 or a 1070 but can wait til the new year if it means a drastic price drop because something else comes out soon.

Hi Guys,

I just dusted off an old PC from my parents' house and want to use it for my 6 years old.

For some reason the windows version on it is not genuine so I need your help and advice with the following:

1. Which windows should I get
2. Which Ram can I get to upgrade it
3. Graphics card?
4. Worth upgrading? It will be mainly for Office and Some Steam games and of course Minecraft

Here are the pics http://imgur.com/a/vftxs

I cleaned it :)

Many thanks in advance

I'll share with you my experiences doing the same thing as you. Basically the only thing you are buying this for is the processor, RAM, hdd, etc, ? the video card is okay (meh) but you don't really know anything else about it. The issue is that I found out is you need to know each and every component when purchasing to make an informed decision. Like will the PSU support a better GPU? what about the mobo?

I bought a cyberpower pc off newegg.ca and I was pretty happy, got most of what I wanted. I bought it for the cpu, tower, windows, hdd, mobo, accessories.
Knew I would replace the RAM, GPU.
Surprise - had to replace PSU it was garbage.

so to summarize don't assume the other parts are what you want/need. find out exactly what is in there. because dollars to donuts its some 100 gram 14.99 PSU that will crap out with more load (I was shocked how light and crappy mine was).

best is find out everything in there , put it up on pcpartspicker and then see whats up.

also don't assume you can't build its easier than you'd think. I was terrified to put psu in but I did it first try no issues (especially in a prebuilt because you just unplug all the old plugs and plug them into the new ones)... but if you are buying pre-built verify every part.

Does anyone have any experience buying windows keys from Play Asia? I've always heard of it as a great site to import games from but $32 for Windows 10 Pro seems too good to be true.

I'd hate for it to work and then Microsoft kick me off after 6 months.

Hi Guys,

I just dusted off an old PC from my parents' house and want to use it for my 6 years old.

For some reason the windows version on it is not genuine so I need your help and advice with the following:

1. Which windows should I get
2. Which Ram can I get to upgrade it
3. Graphics card?
4. Worth upgrading? It will be mainly for Office and Some Steam games and of course Minecraft

Here are the pics http://imgur.com/a/vftxs

I cleaned it :)

Many thanks in advance
  1. Either Windows 10, or failing that Windows 7. 64-Bit versions.
  2. You can get any standard 1.5V DDR3 1333MHz desktop memory.
  3. The power supply in that machine likely won't manage with any powered graphics card, so you'd be looking at a GTX 950 (sans power connector) at best.
  4. You can't really do much to it to upgrade it. As I mentioned, the GTX 950 is about as good as you'll get graphics wise, and adding an SSD (assuming the motherboard supports another SATA device) would also help, but at this point building from scratch is probably preferable. If you're only playing low end Steam games you'll do fine with upgrading, otherwise you'd be better saving and building new.
