Still haven't shown my finished build. Didn't pay much attention to cable management, but I managed to just show the needed cables and that's it. The case makes it a breeze to manage them though. (Backside is a bit messy)

I wish I had braided cables for the maximum look, but my case isn't windowed.

Why is this upside-down?

Any advice for getting rid of a browser re-direct virus (chrome)? No programs seem to get rid of it. I'm about ready to re-install windows...

edit: reinstalled

Haha, it's an inverted layout case. Cold air comes directly from beneath and goes into the CPU and out directly. The front fans produce a cold air stream directly into the GPU and CPU areas. It has great thermal performance. My CPU is idling on 30C.

So all of a sudden my CPU fan is running like it's under full load (Corsair H60). It started last night after I was playing iRacing and the game hung up during a loading screen. I Alt/Tab'd out then closed it; got on Youtube immediately afterwards and a video I was trying to watch was hanging up as well. I figured iRacing was still possibly running and was pulling a load but it cleared up a couple mins later. Went and watched some TV in the other room for a couple hours and when I came back, the CPU fan/cooler was running like I had a game running the whole time. I just shut it down and went to bed with the plans to clean/dust it out tonight (which I just did). Boot it back up and the fan is immediately wide open again, and it still is while I'm typing this. Any idea what might be wrong?

The cooler/CPU/mobo is going on 4 years old if that makes a difference.

EDIT: Hmm, trying to open task manager and it's not responding.

It's very much worth it, for all games, pretty much with anything above 60 fps you can notice the difference. It's huge and I'd say it's a bigger jump than resolution. It's for anything, not just multiplayer. It will change your experience. Even your internet browsing or desktop browsing will change.

I wouldn't get anything less than 144hz now in days, especially if you got a capable card.

Is G-Sync required if I go this route? Looking at these two monitors:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236593

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236405

I'd love to not spend almost $700 on a monitor but if it's going to be a massive difference I can swing it

So quick question here:

I have an EVGA GeForce GTX 970 ACX 2.0 SC, and an Asus MG279Q monitor that supports freesync.

Is it worth selling my 970 and grabbing an RX 480? What type of performance difference is there between these cards? Worth it for freesync alone?

That's well into sidegrade territory, at best it might do a bit better than a 980 and at worst it won't match your 970. If you can get a really good deal on a 480 and get a good amount out of your 970 then maaaaybe it could be worth it. If you want a meaningful performance improvement and Freesync you are better off waiting for Vega.

Possible dumb question re: PG279Q. If I'm going to spend $800, is there anything on the immediate horizon that I would regret this? I know technology is always upgrading. I know Acer announced eye tracking in their refresh but I'm not sure I care for that. The PG279Q and Acer's equivalent have been out a long while. I'm just wondering if something will be announced in a couple of months that I'll end up kicking myself b/c they released a new $800 monitor.

I've been hearing lots of people say recently that the 480 drivers update has put it on par with the GTX 1060, is that not true?

The 1060 has a slight edge (overall, 480 wins several games), but both are basically on the same tier as the 970. "Upgrading" to either is a waste of money IMO unless it's nearly free.

About to pull the trigger on this. Any thoughts or refinements I should make? Goal was an $800 1080p gaming build, but I'm OK that it's a bit over budget. I am keeping my existing case and PSU, which is why they're set to $0.

I've been going deep down the rabbit hole the last few days. What started as a "I'll spend $1000-1200, that should be plenty" has now landed closer to $1500. Not elated about that, but I'm very much a buy once, cry once kind of guy.

Anyway, I'd love some input if there are some glaring issues. This is going to be purely my gaming machine hooked up to the TV, I have a laptop that I use for web and writing.

I'm personally waiting for later in this month to finish my build.

Not only is the Samsung 960 Evo SSD coming this month, but apparently the S340 Elite case for 100 bux is hitting around the end of October as well.

You know, these two beautiful things:

Since the 960 Evo and Pro are blisteringly fast, probably the fastest SSD I've ever seen, and the 250gig Evo runs for like 120 USD, I'm really looking forward to picking that up. Constantly checking press releases to see if it's out yet.

Very solid, but room for improvement. Wait a week or two for the new Samsung M.2 ssd's. Lose the optical drive. Buy a Windows key from Reddit or Kinguin and put that $50 toward a better PSU.

Dang something is wrong with my PC.
Just swapped my PSU today, look at this weird lighting. All settings on ultra, btw. May finally be time to swap in the new videocard. But its just driving me mad, Dark Souls3 crashes but the pc remains fine.

Is there something wrong with his PSU? I've only ever spent between 30-60 dollars on PSUs (500-650w) and I haven't had power issues save for one failure (but that happens to all PSUs sometimes.)

RMx 650 is one of the best 650W units out there.
Could either save the money or upgrade anything else really.

The Corsair RMx review well, but I've personally seen two fail in less than a year. If it was my machine I'd go with a Seasonic unit. Take that for what it's worth.

It really depends on what type of games you play.

The extra fps (and g-sync) is great on games like fps and racing games.

It's not as big of a deal on strategy games.

If you only have say a handful of titles that would make full use of it, its probably not worth it. Plus you'll need a stronger graphics card to drive 1440p than 1080p which will cost you more when upgrading cards.

If you're on a budget 1080p is the way to go... it is a shame there's no 1080p/144hz/g-sync/ips monitor.

Do you have internal drives already you can use? 500gb is kinda small, plenty of games are 20gb+ now.
I was planning on a cheap 7200rpm, sure, but I haven't decided what yet. I see a lot of sub 100 2-3tb drives.

I haven't gotten a new system since the 560 Ti came out, and my previous tower is kinda inaccessible. Good to know being a console peasant for a couple years hasn't put me out of the loop too much.

Double check the speed of the hard drive too if its important for you.

I was just looking up Western Digital Blue drives the other day. 1TB is 7200rpm, and 2GB+ was 5400rpm...

if you need 7200rpm for a bigger drive it would need to be Western Digital Black.

I don't know what it is for other brands.

Thank you for the input. I was wondering about the upcoming M.2 ssd's I've been reading about, I can definitely hold off. I was under the understanding that was a pretty good PSU, and I know failure of everything happen (I've read so much of late, I don't think there's a single Mobo that hasn't sent a hundred DOA boards if reviews are to be believed), but if you say Seasonic is the way to go, I can make that happen.

As for picking up Windows through reddit, is that legit? When I looked earlier this morning it had a very scam-like feel to me.

Thanks again.

If he really really wants an AMD CPU he should save up and hold out for Zen, because AMDs current offerings are abysmal. Old architecture that wasn't even good it launched on an old platform that doesn't natively support a lot of new features and standards.

Saving is also key since it seems like Zen may not launch with any entry level products, just high end ones.

There's no reason to go with an AMD processor right now, they're all outdated and get outperformed by i3s.

Well if he wants amd i would wait a bit for Zen.
But it depends on how urgent the build is. With that budget i would go for a b150 matx board, i5-6400, 8gb ddr4, rx470 4gb, 250gb ssd (or 1TB Hdd but you will lose the ssd speed advantage on loading times and general Windows speed) . I am on my Phone now but the 600$ should be enough.

Thanks, everyone for the replies. I'll convince him to go with a intel CPU.

had to return my Dell U2515H. i'm having no luck with these monitors. it had an uneven colour temperature so the left side was much warmer than the right. i might have got used to it but the main issue was that the screen started flickering/displaying artifacts and pixelating the entire screen. i thought it was my GPU driver/overclock but even after rolling back/disabling OC it was still there. i don't have another mini dp > dp cable to see if it was that but i was using the one that came with the monitor so it's not like i'm using some cheap cable.

it's been really rough going back to my 1080p monitor. not sure if i'm going to bother trying again. surely i'm just unlucky? this monitor has loads of positive reviews yet i get duds.

I just bought a W10 Pro key on Kinguin for my new build last week for $35 and haven't had any issues. They are legal and these guys are just re-sellers. I was going to use Reddit but on Kinguin you can pay around $1-2 extra and be covered in case any problems come up with the key.

Something along the lines of

if your friend has a Windows key already.
You can get the evga 500b as a PSU and a cheaper case to keep it under 600 but This is what i could come up with in a short time and without a computer near me.[/QUOTE]

Thanks, that's almost the exact build I'm doing, same motherboard, GPU (except mine is the 8GB version), and all. Except I have a i5-6500, maybe he can bump up his budget to do this build.

Does anyone know if the ASUS ROG Swift PG278QR is in the process of being replaced?

I see they are out of stock several places. It was recommended to me a few months ago in this thread, but I wasn't in a position to order one before now.

Since I never got an answer on the steam thread.

What's the consensus on the steam controller?
is it as good or better than regular console controllers?

Does it require a learning curve?

Can it be used on non steam games, like origin, gog?

Thanks

This is user preference, I don't think it is.

Yes it does require a learning curve.

It'll function, just not like it does in steam or a regular controller. Haven't tried it myself outside of steam though, just what I have heard.

Good info, thank you very much. I'll check that out when I get home.
