"I Need a New PC!" 2017 The Ryzing of Kaby Lake and NVMwhee!

We're getting (back) there. It might be a while before you see US$0.20/GB but there's a few options back in the US$0.26 range. The drive I linked to is 30% more expensive than your target but PCPP price history shows it was about US$200 last summer.

Basically no, it's not too much to ask - it's just hard to tell whether we are weeks or months or years from prices going down to where we want them.

I'm having a hard time telling if SSD prices are still rising or dropping. Seems a bit back-and-forth right now. My hope is that between now and Christmas we'll see a sale on a 1 TB SSD that is <$230 or so at which point I'll probably jump on it. Would sure beat my 5400 RPM HDD for working with my video editing/rendering. I'm optimistic that I'll find a deal by/on Black Friday.

Heh.

Yeah, that game crushes my (1080ti / 7700k) system at 3440x1440 without the upscaling turned on (or whatever it's called).
Oh right I forgot about that haha. Yeah. I'm currently only at 1080p so I'm maybe a bit overkill (which is what I want, bad ports and all that) but I do plan on a 4k tv in the future.

My Sensei Raw scroll wheel is fucked up, scrolls up 20% of the time when scrolling down :(

Granted, it is several years old at this point, but I haven't put too much use into it. Has Steelseries improved their build quality or should I jump ship to another brand? Don't need much from a mouse, just 5 button + wired basically...

Same thing happened to mine.

So I bought a Logitech. Then the second mouse button started double-clicking so I RMA'd it. Then my new one has the middle-button double-clicking. I've had two Razers that were also crap.

All mice suck now. Maybe I'll try a Zowie next.

Oh yeah? Is it totally not on the horizon and is more of a feature that's there but no one uses? If so then I'll downgrade to a b350 board and save a bit of cash.

My understanding is that it shifts the workload for multi-GPU to the individual app (game) developers, rather than being something that's handled at the driver level. I don't know if it's ready for prime time if the dev wants to take it on, but regardless I don't see that happening. It just takes a niche feature that used to require some developer effort to one where it's all on them. I should add that I'm not a developer, so this is just my interpretation of the situation as an end user.

Anyone know if Dual Channel vs Quad Channel would effect CPU score in 3dMark?

It seems me and one other user in the Time Spy Results are running dual channel and we have below 7K in CPU Score while everyone else that has quad core has 10K or more.

This is for threadripper and a 1080 gtx.

whats the perks of having two Ethernet ports on your MOBO i just bought the asus Z270 TUF mark 1 and it has two

The most obvious situations would be to bond them together for bandwidth (switch permitting) or to have a spare when one breaks. I lost the port on my Z97 board and just wound up upgrading. That was a bad call since KL has pretty much sucked.

Guessing you could connect to 2 different networks as well.

Intel just announced Icelake CPU which is the next architectural step plus new 10nm+ process.

It will likely come with with PCI-e 4.0, new Intel 4-core Audio standard, and USB gen 2 (2x bandwidth).

Right, it sounds great, but it's also possibly out into 2019. I haven't bought hardware since 2010-2011 so I'm about done waiting. Almost pulled the trigger on 7700K (probably should've), then waited for the 7740K which was a mistake, and now the 8700K is looking like it could be pretty decent.

I totally realize anything new I get, AMD or Intel, is going to be a giant upgrade from my i7-950/680... but if I'm only dropping money every 6-7 years I don't mind having a higher budget. It's the "something better is always coming" that screws me, with PCs, phones, everything :)

Sooo, when do you HAVE to reinstall Windows? I'd be using my same SSD and HDD. But I think I need a new mobo, gpu, maybe ram. Would I have to reinstall windows if I do that?

Also I have a i7 (3.4ghz... I think... not at my computer atm), are they still relevant? I bought it 4 years ago.

Any advice would be greatlyy appreciate it.

(also I'm thinking of getting a 1080. Are those still worth it?)

I personally wouldn't try to skip the Windows install when changing to a motherboard with a different chipset. I'd probably try it if I had a broken Z270 board and I replaced it with another of the same.

I don't doubt that people have managed to do this, but it seems like a bad idea.

Ahhh, I see. Dangit. It's just such a pain in the ass. My mobo is ~4 years old, so I doubt a 1070/1080 would work on it...

Thanks for the advice!

My last mouse was a Logitech and I had issues with it so that's why I moved to the Steelseries.

Might just try the Rival 310 if it gets good reviews when it comes out. It is sponsored by my gaming waifu after all.

edit: Ah, fuck, just ordered it

A 1070 and 1080 would absolutely work on a 4-year-old motherboard. I had a 1080Ti on my Maximus IV Gene-Z before I upgraded which is from 2012. Even if it's only PCI-E 2.0 it's not an issue.

As for reinstalling: my one (fairly obvious) suggestion/reminder if you have Origin, uPlay, Steam games is use the backup option for Steam and for uPlay and Origin I don't know if there's an official backup option but you can just copy the game folders to an external disk, copy them back once you've reinstalled Windows and let them verify files and that takes just a couple of mins to bring everything back.

Ohh woa, didn't know that. I'll go check out my mobo when I get home, is there a good way to tell if it would be compatible or not? Are there websites for checking that stuff?

Also how severe is the power differences between the 1070/1080 nowadays. Sorry for all the questions, I need to get this done soon! I really appreciate it.

Having some odd issues with my monitor, display port cable or graphics card. not sure which, possibly all 3 but hopefully it's some simple i'm just missing.

Got Acer Predator monitor, EVGA 1080 and the DP cable supplied with the monitor. had no issues with any of them until today. I turned my PC, motheboard splash screen came on the monitor, then instead of booting into windows the monitor displayed no connection and went to sleep. Rebooted PC and it worked fine.

Came home from work and the same thing happened, rebooted the PC again and it worked fine.

so, any ideas on what kind of fuckery is going on here? checked all connections and there was nothing loose.

Help!

I turned on my PC today and it sounded louder than usual. I looked on the monitor, post error. CPU fan speed is incorrect.

In the BIOS, the CPU shoots up to 80-90 C, and none of my fans are being recognized.

So I open her up. All the fans are spinning (altho as I said, the whole thing is noticably louder). All the fan cables seem seated.

I don’t know what to do now... I tried to clear CMOS but I think I failed with my screwdriver, and its too late for tonight. Could that do it?

Don't know if anyone's interested, but I felt like posting here might in addition to the B/S/T might be a good idea.

Just selling a few computer parts, so maybe those who are building can save a little coin.

Well I assume it has a PCI-E slot so you should be good. Which CPU do you have?

The 1080 is definitely more powerful than the 1070. If you're planning to keep this card for a few years, get the best card you can now. Still, keep in mind the 1080 is coming up on 1.5 years old and 11-series is around the corner. New Intel chips before the end of the year as well. AMD price drops by that time as well.

If you are considering upgrading everything, waiting might serve you well but of course it also depends on your budget, patience, intended use and whose hardware you want to buy.

Just a quick question or 3. Thee 980ti is still pretty much equivalent to a 1070 isn't it? Since I'm going to be sticking with 1440p gaming @60fps for quite some time, would it be a good idea to just stick with my 980ti until Nvidia releases their next line of consumer cards? I'll make the transition to 4k gaming eventually, but I don't seem myself doing that for at least another year or so.

Can you wait probably ~7 months for better graphics? Depends how demanding of games you play, what settings you have to have as minimum, etc.

Mind if i ask why you ended up deciding on that case in particular? It is a big one.

I'm unreasonable/particular about aesthetics. :( Most gaming PC cases look absolutely gaudy and awful, and I can't stand it. But this one looks VERY sleek. My friends let me know it would have more than enough room to build everything in it, whereas a mid-size tower would be snug, with a tiny bit of room, but what you generally want is a lot of space?

I'm not against mid-size towers. :) Are there any you would recommend that look sleek, professional and have high quality builds?

The S340 Elite I just built in with very similar components was pretty good.

For something that looks similar, Phanteks got two smaller version of it that are still full towers, the Luxe and the Pro. They don't look exactly the same, but the inside has the same quality look to it without being so tall.

The monitor you picked is way overpriced at $644. It runs usually around $450 at least once a month. For $650 you can get a ips model

Will having a smaller tower (mid from full) make the machine more hot or cause any problems?

Going from your list, both your CPU an graphics card are water cooled, you will be fine. You still have plenty of air circulation on S340 elite even if you didn't. That said, for that same reason you would be more interested in looking at cases thinking on where you are going to put the radiators; making sure you can remove things out of the way in front, etc.

My temps have been fine on my 7700k and 1080ti. Using a Corsair 100i V2 water cooler with the radiator front mounted. Asus Strix Ti. I thought only having two case fans would be an issue but its actually been really nice. I really liked the S340 elite. Cases are so personal though its basically the one component you can spend however much or little on due to personal preference.

Extremely helpful. Thank you both and everyone else who weighed in. :)

I toned down the PSU because I received multiple comments on it... I just wanted to be "future proof" i guess with it, but if it was way overkill then I can scale it back.

I think I'm going to go with the S340 Elite White! Thanks so much for bringing it up. Very sleek. And it's apparently VR ready. My friends have Oculus and I want to jump in with them... With the Puck thing and the HDMI on the out, this is great.

Good to know that the fans it comes with are enough, considering my AIO coolers for the GPU and CPU. :)

I'm excited to build!

One thing that I was kind of clueless on what selecting it was the motherboard. I chose the Gigabyte AUROS one because it matched the GPU makers. But there's apparently many different kinds of AUROS mobos. 5, K5, 7, K7, 9, etc. Do you guys have any recommendations on the best one? Is the one I selected good?

The only thing Im not sure of is the GPU water cooler radiator. You have the big one for the CPU going up front so im not sure how much of a problem it would be for the GPU radiator placement. You would maybe have to take out one of the case fans. Someone else can weigh in too if they think it would be ok to go for it or maybe going for a good air cooled Ti like the Strix?

Can you wait probably ~7 months for better graphics? Depends how demanding of games you play, what settings you have to have as minimum, etc.

Eh. I don't have to have super duper maxed out ultra settings on games. I just like games to look good and not look like a muddy, aliased and jaggy mess everywhere. I am willing to sacrifice some graphical effects for more anti-aliasing as long as it doesn't drag my fps down too much.

I'm one of those people who doesn't mind of a game is looking good and I can only get 50 fps most of the time. I mean I can tell the difference between 50 fps, 60 fps, and higher fps counts like 144fps (friend has a 144hz monitor. I'm in love, but I can't afford that kidn of money on an "not very important to me" upgrade), but I don't get bothered by it much. Sure it's a bit jarring when my framerate goes sub 60, but I'm someone who gets angry at such a thing.

So waiting is no problem for me. I'm fine with my current setup. I'm just wondering if it's worth investing in a pretty significant boost in performance GPU wise like a 1080ti in order to do a bit of future proofing I guess.

Hey guys,

Yesterday we had a lightning strike hit our home and my gaming desktop won't power anymore. I was wondering if anyone had any similar experience and what the chance is that I could still retrieve the GPU. The rest of the PC was rather old but the GPU was a 1070.

The PC build your friends put together is absolutely fine for 1080p/144 with gsync (in the future), just some notes.

The 7700k is currently the best option for high fps gaming, but intels coffee lake line up is supposed to be available later this year. It might be worth waiting for it, especially if you want a more "futureproof" CPU. Also, if you don't plan to play above 60fps amds ryzen 5 1600 is a great offering and cheaper than the 7700k (and probably still good enough for 75-90 fps, which will most probably be the limit a 1070 is able to hit at 1080p).

If you want to spend money on a good thermal compound to get extra 1-2° of cooling power get the thermal grizzly kryonaut and not the arctic silver.

The MSI Z270-a is a very good mb, but it only runs the Realtek ALC892 sound codec (it's big fllow imo). Which is okay if you plan to use an USB headset or if you plan to use audio over hdmi, but the asus z270-a uses the Realtek® ALC S1220A (+ better sound channel build quality). The difference is like day 'n night if you use a headset with normal jacks (preferable over usb connection) on the asus a over the msi a. It also offers DTS Connect and DTS Headphone:X, which further improves the sound quality and emulates 3D audio on stereo headset very good. I'd even say the audio quality on the asus z270 a is better than on the xfi audio soundcard from creative.

If you really plan to go for 144 Hz, think about getting a GTX 1080.

The Corsair - H100i v2 is a good performer, but it is loud af. Something most people don't mention when recommending it. I had one for some time and gladly went back to dual air tower coolers.

Here, I saved you some money. How old is your PSU? If it's older than 3 years old, replace it. The CPU comes with a good cooler, unless you really want an AIO.

Thanks for both of your inputs, I took some of your advice and deciding what my cutoff is for price vs need.

Added that Grizzly paste for sure.

Is the extra 60 bucks worth the improved sound for the ASUS MB? I normally use headphones jacks but my HyperX cloud broke down after 3 years of use and my friend gave me his Razer USB headset for free.

That's where I'm currently at, still considering what you said about the MB and the 1080.

I understand the hesitation to invest an extra $60 into a MB and it makes more sense for you to use the money for a GTX 1080, if you really plan to go for high FPS. Reaching a refresh rate of 100+ is very difficult, especially at reasonable high settings and you need to have a lot of CPU and GPU power to do so. Just lock up recent (demanding) AAA benchmarks at fullHD:

Hellblade
105fps on a GTX 1070, 130fps on a GTX 1080

ME:A
66 fps on a GTX 1070, 82 FPS on a GTX 1080

Watch_Dogs 2
67 fps on a GTX 1070, 79 FPS on a GTX 1080

You will of course still have to reduce settings to reach 100+ FPS, even on a GTX 1080. But it is much more easy and doable. Also keep in mind that games and visuals improve all the time. AAA stuff will only get even more demanding in 2018 and we're still about 6-9 months away from a new generation of nvidia GPUs. If you have the extra $80 to get a 1080 instead of a 1070 do it, the extra 25% of raw power are worth it for 144Hz/Gsync but stay on the 1070 if you're worried about budget or only want to play at 60Hz for the next 6-9 months.

Back to the sound:
Sound on a USB headset is being processed by your CPU and the USB device itself, having a dedicated onboard soundchip on your MB doesn't make any kind of difference there. But if you plan to use a headset with jacks in the future it will make a noticeable difference. Is it worth the extra $60? I don't know, reviews don't seem to factor in or even test on board sound quality. All I can say is: I bought the z270 prime a without looking for a dedicated, good soundchip. I even had no idea that there are differences. I just pluged in my headphone into it and wondered why everything sounded so much clearer and cleaner than on my old mb with ALC892. Now I'm a fan and the on board sound will play a deceive factor when looking for a new MB in the future. I also startet to point out the differences in sound chips to people planing new builds, because barley anybody seems to be aware and know that there are differences in the first place. It's meant to be an info and not a mandate, because the sound on the msi will be good. It will just be better on the asus.

Might as well bump up to a 1050, no?

If you're willing to spend $40 more the CPU can be bumped into an i3. $20 more and a more solid hard disk is possible.
