"I Need a New PC!" 2017 The Ryzing of Kaby Lake and NVMwhee!

Yo! So I've finally decided to get into PC Gaming. Been a console/handheld guy all my life. Customizability, back/future compat, free online gaming has won me over. Also, more Japanese support nowadays (excited that DB Fighterz and MH World are coming to PC! Now Sega, port those Atlus games) is good to see.

General usage and gaming will be the primary purposes. Targeting 1080p 60 fps for the most part, but on an ultrawide monitor. So ideally, 2560x1080 is the resolution I'd like, at 60fps.

Here are the parts I've seeked out! Oh, I live in Ireland and it seems like Amazon UK is the safest and cheapest place to get parts. I've not shopped around much, but for such expense I would like to buy from a reliable source, and Amazon UK have not failed me over the past few years.

Here's the monitor. Cheapest one!

Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4 3000 MHz

Ryzen 5 1600 CPU

MSI x370 Mobo

Zotac NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6 GB Mini GDDR5. Went for the 6gb for 'future-proofing'. However, I went with the x370 board for that multi GPU support that DirectX12 is getting. I saw in a tech deals video (13:50) that it doesn't matter what GPUs you have either, so it seems like a good safety net to invest in in case games start to struggle to get 60 fps on the 1060? It would be nice to just be able to add another card, rather than replacing it. Perhaps 1080s will be cheapre in a few years and the two will make a great combo :p. If I'm incorrect in my understanding of this, then I may downgrade to a b350 board, but that audio boost feature is nice too on the x370.

These are the speakers, haha. Just a standard wireless mouse and keyboard combo. Going wireless as being able to easily move them around is kind of essential as I'd shift them over to draw a pen & paper design for my studies & work (UX Design). Bonus that both the keyboard and the mouse are quiet, so I can work away at night. Hopefully wireless isn't terrible for gaming though? I'm not competitive by any means, more of a have fun but play to win guy.

Of course, these aren't all the parts! I have a 3tb Toshiba P300 hard drive 7200rpm which will do for now and a friend of mine has some spare pc parts, so I'm going to see if he's got an ATX case lying around and maybe even a power supply. One question though: How much wattage should I go for? 600W? 550W?

Another thing, I'm not in a rush to build this PC, but I'm sick of working on my laptop and would love to start working away on that lovely ultrawide sooner rather than later. Aiming for within the next month to build it!

Thanks! And wish me luck!
P.S. I'm away from home atm, so I may slow to reply.

I wouldn't hold my breath for that type of multi-GPU support. I mean, it might work out down the road, but I wouldn't spend too much money in the hopes of using it if you are on a budget...

Here's my attempt.

If you're willing to spend $40 more the CPU can be bumped into an i3. $20 more and a more solid hard disk is possible.

prolly can bump a bit for more solid CPU

Btw you guys shouldn't recommend an SSD to me

the price of SSDs never goes down in my country, I see it in very appealing price in site like newegg. But in my country the price of like 128G SSD still like 100$

like wtf man, no other PC part have that much of price disparity

EDIT: You guys won't recommend me an SSD anyway with my given budget, I just want to rant about this lol

Honestly, I would never build a PC, whatever the budget be, without an SSD. I would rather hunt a used crap 20 gig SSD than go mechanical. SSD is the single most important part of a modern PC. It baffles my mind anytime I check the BestBuy "deals" and see all those big rigs boasting their insanely huge TERRABYTES of worthless mechanical drive. Yeah right. No wonders people complains their computers are slow. 32gig of ram and a threadripper can't save the molasse that is a mechanical drive. But yeah, marketing. Don't build without an SSD. Like ever.

My PCs are SSD only now. The only mechanical drives we have are for backup purposes (externals).

why not the EVGA G3 650w ?

650W should be enough I think, I'm running Ryzen 1700 + GTX 1080 fine with my 650w.

I didn't even realize there is a G3 version. Pretty much $99 vs $109 (using best buy to purchase) Biggest differences are less connections (not a problem for me) on the G3 and the warranty is longer on the g3.

Yeah the G3 has 1 less sata port, it's shorter and has hydro dynamic bearing fan. Nothing wrong with either one I think! XD

Does anyone have a recommendation for an external sound card that can output a good DTS or DD5.1 mix for games? I built a PC with ASUS ROG Strix Z270I mITX mobo but Windows 10 is bugged with TOSLINK real-time encoding for this board. I'm currently using analog 5.1 on my older Yamaha receiver, but the sub channel does not work in that mode.

I've never used an external sound card but I'm sick of not having bass in my games... my tower speakers are better than bookshelves but they only go so low.

The 1060 doesn't have any SLI support.

Well, I've truly learned the importance of cable management and airflow today.

I posted a while back about having issues with temps while overclocking my R5 1600 and it hitting 80c. Since then, I pretty much gave up on the idea until I got a better cooler.
However also since then, I tidied up the cabling inside my case, and also moved it from the floor and on to my desk.

Right now I'm running OCCT and my temps are only at 56c while overclocked to 3.5Ghz and 1.22v.
Only a small bump, but that's good progress. Gonna try for 3.6ghz next and see what the temps hit. I'm not fussed about going for 3.7 or 3.8 on the stock cooler. I'll just be happy to get 3.6Ghz for now with 2933mhz RAM.

Unless you had like a wall of cable blocking air flow, I'm very surprised you went from 80c to 56c while stressing the CPU. Are you sure that was the only change. That is a massive difference ! Moving your tower up should have had a negative impact since air should be colder the lower you get to the floor. But relative position on the same floor should have minimal impact.
Maybe you lowered the vcore ? Updtated the bios ? Ambiant air is colder ?

Ambient air is colder due to be closer to a window, and I know it doesn't seem to make any sense.
Maybe it's down to using Ryzen Master software to view temps before and using HWmonitor now instead?

I'm almost 20 minutes into a OCCT stress test and my temps have maxed at 60.5c.
15 minutes of CPUZ stress testing and using Ryzen Master had the temps at 82c in the past.
Both on 1.25v/3.6Ghz.

Have you ever measured ambient temperatures at ankle-level versus waist-level in your room? It's not significant enough to really factor into PC heat, assuming airflow at each level of elevation is equivalent.

Well I don't know how you got from 82 to 60. Just know that 60c at 1.22v is about what I'm getting myself with an 212 evo. It looks pretty good for using the included cooler. Good job.

The CPU temp is at 50c there (CPUZ hadn't been running for very long), Ryzen Master is reporting 67c, 17c difference, but that does match up with the package temp further down in HWM.
So I can safely say the 20c drop in temps is due to monitoring temps in HWM instead of Ryzen Master, but which one is correct?

On my build, I get the correct temp from the package in HWM. My motheboard isn't even reporting CPU temp readings like yours. The only value I have is from the CPU itself (package). Which should be the correct value as I understand it.

Doesn't the Ryzen 1600 have a 20C offset setup by AMD? So it doesn't report properly outside of Ryzen Master. Someone can back me up on this maybe, I feel as though I'm mis-remembering which CPU from the Ryzen line has the offset.

I have the same problem as you but am using an internal Sound Blaster Z for my desktop myself.

Having some trouble getting my newly built PC to boot. I'm not really sure what the issue is or how I can even find out, but I'm getting really frustrated. Here's the parts for reference:

CPU: AMD - Ryzen 5 1600 3.2GHz 6-Core Processor ($197.65 @ OutletPC)
CPU Cooler: CRYORIG - C7 40.5 CFM CPU Cooler ($29.89 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard: ASRock - X370 Gaming-ITX/ac Mini ITX AM4 Motherboard ($149.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Memory: Corsair - Vengeance LPX 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR4-3000 Memory ($83.99 @ Amazon)
Storage: Crucial - MX300 525GB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive ($159.88 @ OutletPC)
Video Card: Zotac - GeForce GTX 1060 6GB 6GB Mini Video Card ($293.99 @ Amazon)
Case: Silverstone - Sugo SG13P Mini ITX Tower Case
Power Supply: Corsair - CXM 550W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply ($59.99 @ Amazon)

Is there anything I can do to narrow down what could be wrong, or even what isn't wrong? There was one instance where the fans ran for about half a second but then automatically stopped. The LEDs on front would flash for a second at first too but now I'm getting nothing at all.

Probably just missed a cable. Did you plug in the 8 pin ATX cable? 24 pin ATX? VGA power for the video card?

yep yep and yep :/

Does it turn on at all? Cooler plugged in correctly--does its fan spin at all?

PSU could be borked. Do you have another one you could test it with?

I would probably try resetting the CMOS as well, and look up the PSU paper clip trick.

fake edit: also make sure you inserted the case's power/reset connectors correctly.

hmmm, I didn't know about the paperclip trick. I'll give that a try cause I haven't noticed the fan spinning at all yet.

Do you think it's wise to re-purpose an old abandoned Dell XPS 8500 desktop into a budget gaming PC?

I have one on hand, and these are the specs - it's from Mid-2012.

XPS 8500, Black Chassis w/19:1 media card reader

3rd Gen Intel Core i5-3450 processor 3.10 GHz with Turbo Boost 2.0 up to 3.50 GHz
8GB DDR3 SDRAM AT 1600MHZ-2x4G B
16X DVD+/-RW
AMD Radeon HD 7570 1GB GDDR5
1TB SATA Hard Drive 7200 RPM

I just opened it up to take a look as well.

I'm thinking, swap out the GPU with say a 1060, and the 460W PSU with one that has the Molex GPU plug(s) unless I can use an adapter. Add an SSD as the main HDD and have the 1TB as storage.

Then maybe it's still passable as an budget gaming PC?

Okay, so your PSU works. That's good news.

I would unplug everything except the essentials you need to boot. Go through and make sure everything is fully inserted, all cables, the RAM, video card, etc. If it doesn't turn on at all I think it's a connection problem (unless your motherboard is hosed).

Does it half turn on? And if it does, does your CPU cooler's fan spin? Make sure your power button and reset switch are connected correctly onto the motherboard's tiny pins (I forget the name of that bank of pins).

No reason why not. Could even go with a 1050ti for easier power requirements. 3450 can still run a whole bunch of stuff great I wager.

Good idea! Since there's only 2 spare SATA power cables, if I wanted to add the SSD, I'd need to remove the 1TB HDD. That saves over $100 overall by going to a 1050ti over a 1060!

The best you can get at that low price is a GT 1030 and you might be able to play max at medium, maybe high settings for 1080p/60fps, depending on the game.

Bought that LG 34" 1440p ultrawide w/ FreeSync for $500 (minus ~$30 w/ eBay Bucks). No tax since I'm in California.

Did I do good?

1080 made it to gigabyte, now we pray they don't just throw the same card in the box and actually ship me a new one :/

Driving 1440p on a 390 HURTS, barely even runs PUBG at 1080p lol

Are you getting anything, does the fans start? I also noticed you have no GPU, Ryzen doesn't have internal graphics so you can't use the on board graphics connectors.

You need a gpu, also make sure you have 24 pin power and 8/4 pin cpu power and 6/8 pin gpu power cables plugged in.

I would also reroute that molex connector to come from the top downwards as it will touch the gpu once placed.

Also you have a slight probler with ram since the AMD logo is above the dimm slot but it looks like you have enough clearance, don't worry about this too much, its just cosmetic.

If no lights are coming on are you sure your PSU is 1. Plugged in and 2. The power switch on the PSU is in the on position? I've made stupider mistakes before that about had me RMA a mobo xP.

Also your power switch connector isn't attached to the mobo in the second pic.
