Hasnt been eating, APPEARS to be having trouble with the BM, and has crusty deposits around they eyes. A bit worried, researching it, wondering if anyone has any ideas. Thanks in advance.

Sweet and sour sauce with water chestnuts and pineapple.

Seriously though, it may be an infection. Vet perscription time!

Maybe he wants to die?

Please MAF let me die!!!

Just make sure you keep plenty of fresh food and water available. A lot of times animals will avoid eating just to clear out a minor illness. He could begin eating again in small amounts at any time, so keeping fresh food and water available is important.

just did some research, it doesnt look good, not sure how to help him out, or how I could afford a vet visit and medicine :p
Are there any human equivalents of the medicine that you may have on hand? Sometimes it works, but look it up first.

I moved him out of his cage into a sterile sorta environ for the time being. Laundry basket upturned with newspaper on the bottom. Im afraid something in his cage caused it, but I clean it regularly. Food and water are there for him.

Ill look into home remedies. He was eating and drinking tons just a week ago, which is why im bothered.

Hammy: I couldnt find a website that posted possible medicines. his symptoms are pretty obvious.

"YOU killed me! I'll haunt you until the day you die!"

Totally. :( We had a hamster named Snowball/Hammy once. She started limp at one hind leg all the sudden. X-rays suggested that her spine was broken somewhere. After she died, I resolved to not buy another hamster. In some way, I felt that I failed to protect her and prevent her suffering. Furthermore, I did not want to support an industry that created animals for humans' enjoyment.

:sigh: I miss you Hammy.

My brother had two hamsters named the exact same things a long time ago. There was lovin; there was baby eatin'. Considering my age, that may be where I learned about sex and babies. Could potentially explain a lot.

Bleh. I had a guinea pig that got sick and died. Not fun. :( Some tips from a book I have...

-If not eating, the environment may be too cool or damp, or there could be a draft or overheating or there are not enough things to gnaw at.

-Try feeding him lukewarm chamomile or fennel tea with grated apple or carrot. You should be able to do it with a spoon.

Also maybe you should try adding some sawdust/wood shavings over the newspaper to make it more sanitary.

You should not keep two hamsters together in the same cage, even if they are the dwarf kind.

thanks jason. Ill try and keep him away from his cage for now, hopefully his situation will improve. Ill keep looking for non-vet answers. I just cant afford it right now. Its awful to say but you know....

Sorry I can't be of any assistance, seeing as how my guinea pigs died. If the guinea pig's not looking too good, it probably isn't. Maybe your guinea pig will recover for you though? Sadly, I spent a good portion of time trying to help mine, and they just passed away. Guinea pigs aren't my style of pets anyway; I prefer pets like cats and dogs.

I was in a similar situation without money. I had no help from the vet; and now, they're dead. I'm over their deaths now. They're nothing but a memory.

Actually, not even.

Best of luck to you, Mr Angry Face.

usually if you bring a small animal into the vet they smirk and find a nice way to tell you its all over. All for the low low price of around 100 dollars.

I have a guinea pig...

1) How old is it?
2) What is the climate of it's dwelling like?
3) What do you feed it?
4) What kind of bedding do you use and how often do you change it?

Not sure how old, inhereted him from a friend.

cedar bedding, recommended for guinea pigs according to the label. Frenshed every other day, replaced completely every week and a half.

Fed a hamster/guinea pig feed mix from petsmart. Along with carrots, he likes those.

I keep the room at around 76 degrees.

It may be his time.

Those asshats are lying out of greed. The oils in cedar that give it it's smell are actually vapors that can hurt a guniea pig's respiratory system, especially if the area isn't well venthilated. Aspen shavings, CareFRESH bedding, Crown Animal Bedding and "Yesterday's News" bedding is all good.

Your cleaning habits are good, keeps the ammonia of their urine from getting bad for them, but you should change the bedding type.

Those are fine, you might want to try some fresh spinach leaves in place of carrots as it is more nutritious. Also you should feed him a handful of hay every day to help keep his teeth from growing too long and his digestive tract running well.

Do you put a few drops of vitamin supplement in his water and change that out every day? This is very good for them and you should be able to find the supplement in a local pet store.

That's good.

I'm not a pro on medical stuff or treating illness but here is a freaking awesome site for guinea pig care...

This thread makes me sad. =(

Same thing happened with my hamster years ago, he didn't make it though. He lived for a 3 years, so it was to be expected. I miss the little guy. =(

Man that really sucks :(

Anyway, my hamster story is pretty sad. Our female hamster was pregnant with 8 babies and all of us watched with excitement as each one appeared. I kept running up and down the house reporting the development of events to my parents. After the last baby came out though, the mother was pretty exhausted to the point where she was totally unresponsive to touch/sound/sight. Sadly enough, she passed away less than 20 minutes later. Seeing how the baby hamsters needed something to suck on and their mom was dead, I started calling my cousin who had a bunch of hamsters who I thought could provide the kids with milk. The growing list of unfortunate events continued when she was not at home..and she recommended that I go to a pet shop to see if they could help. All 8 of them died on the way there. Never felt so miserable in my entire life.

In memory of Barley & her eight children :(

Yep, cedar shavings are bad news. Never use them.

He seems better since I moved him out, moving around more pooping less, maybe its ok. Ill switch bedding tomorrow, then I can move him back. Might just splurge on a new cage.

I had a hamster before the guinea pig for 3 years, that guy rocked. This one does too tho, gotta keep him kickin

Poor little guy :/ I love guinea pigs so much character in them. Much better than other rodents as pets cept maybe rats. I just love how they never shut up

he's still kicking seems better a little, tho still diahria-ing all over. Im making him drink and just gave him a bath. Im just hoping he can maybe ride this out. Vet visits are insane, I feel cruel letting that be the situation, but it is.

Vets are really only for cats, dogs, big reptiles, and exotic birds. And farm animals, I guess. You're really out of luck for a small animal like a hamster, guinea pig, fish, etc. I would just do your best to keep him warm and dry, with only fresh food available and in a very clean environment.

We used to have two of those dwarf hamsters, then eventually had about forty. It eventually got to the point where the original mother had been impregnated by her offspring several times. She was a nasty bitch, too. She tore the father's eye out but then still used him for sex. The babies were so small though that they'd slip through the bars in the cage, so every morning for a while after a birth we'd find half a hamster on the living room floor because the cats had gotten to them. The babies were cute, but I'm glad we got rid of the dirty vermin. I'm happy with my two kitties and my iguana.
