I'd slap you in the face for not mentioning either The Ultimates or Ultimate Fantastic Four, although The Ultimates has a rather inconsistent release pattern and Ultimate Fantasy Four is still young, but promising.

Yeah, but Ultimates volume 1 is now done. Time to get the hardcover! It's worth it. Those 13 issues kicked all sorts of ass. who knows if we'll ever see Volume 2. :( Looks like it's on hold for now, at least.

OMG I totally forgot about the Ultimates; definately add that. Ultimate Fantastic Four is promising, but the first arc was sort of "blah." The Ellis issues seem better, though.

Who's the current artist for Ultimate Spidey? Is it Mark Bagley? Because I seem to remember liking his work (I'm pretty sure he did Amazing for awhile).

I still think Kraven's Last Hunt is the best Spidey story. Loved it, read it about a jillion times...

That's the story arc where Spiderman is buried alive, correct? If so, then it's one of my favorites as well.

Spider-Man Blue.

A re-telling of sorts.

Finished reading it today on the train ride home, then started over and finished it off again. As I said in IRC, I totally love the 'blue boxes'. What Peter is thinking. It adds that other dimension to the character, the dude isn't impervious, he isn't an endless stream of one liners. You know, it's interesting, I always thought of heroes much like what's his face... the main character in Marvels... did. They're just there, demi-gods out to save the people of the worlds they inhabit. Works like I guess this one, and DKR/Year One (that I've read) really show that they face problems like everyday life. Man, I felt for Peter every time he talked into the tape recorder. However the action felt like it was just thrown in there, though. (Yes, I know, it's from a certain point in his history.) Just that two Vultures, Kraven, and Rhino seems a bit much. They spend very few pages on each fight. Fine though I much preferred the interpersonal stuff with Gwen.

I totally recommend it though. This Spider-Man 2 hype had really turned me off from my fave superhero but this book just goes to show why I was able to identify with him so much as a youngster.

So I'm definitely going to order the Ultimate Collection of Vol 1-6. From what I've read, they're at Volume 9 by now? So along with the Collection encompassing 1-6, should I pick up 7, 8 and 9 individually, or should I wait for them to come packaged in a bigger collection?

I'm also gonna pick up the first Essential Spiderman, and the others when I get the chance.

Also, are there any good Spidey encyclopedias out there?

^ All that should set me back a fair amount of $$$, especially considering the fact that I live in Canada ;)

And once again, after further reading about the Clone Saga, not only am I confused, but I'm extremely saddened that the Spiderman mythos was allowed to be butchered like that :(

Do they have a book collection like that Ultimate one for the Amazing Spider-Man series? I want to read through all of the symbiote shit again. The Maximum Carnage saga was some of the best comics I've ever read.

Oh and this is off topic but they REALLY need to make a dvd collection of the Spiderman series that was on Fox years ago.

Like I've been talking about, there's the Essential Spiderman collection, though they only seem to be somewhere around the 120th issue by now.

Does anyone know of any specific TPBs for Amazing that covers something like the symbiote saga?

The book I linked covers volumes 1 - 6. Its totally worth it. and at 39.99 its a steal considering each hardcover usually costs 24.99 at stores.

That hardcover is nice, but when I read the description and saw USM volumes 1-3, I thought it was talking about the hardcovers and this massive hc covered the three already released (volumes 1-8 in tpb form) and was kind of miffed it left the last two off there. It's definitely a damn nice collection, but I figured it's not as cheap as I once thought. the other deal where you buy 2 hc's and get 1 free to collect all 8 volumes is a much better deal imo.

Uh, no. The three hardcovers DO cover the exact same material as this super-volume. Trade paperbacks 1-6, or hardcovers 1-3, or issues 1-39. However you want to see it. After that, the issues are not available in any hardcover form. Either way you cut it, you're paying $40 for 6 trade paperbacks. Do you want them in 3 hardcovers or 1? It's up to you.

The newest trade paperback is #9, but the fourth hardcover also just came out in June. It collects TPBs 7 and 8, issues 40-45 and 47-53. TPB 9 is actually just one issue of Ultimate Spider-Man, #46, and Ultimate Six #1-7. Ultimate Six is the Ultimate version of the Sinister Six. It revolves around Spider-Man, but also features a heavy dose of The Ultimates. It's very good.

So, I'd suggest getting either the first three HCs for $40, or the collected volume for $40, plus hardcover 4. Then get TPB 9 and you'll have Ultimate Spider-Man #1-53, which takes you right up to the beginning of the "Hollywood" story arc, which you should still be able to find at your local comic shop if you decide you want to start collecting Ultimate Spider-Man every issue.

As for the encyclopedia, yes there is one, and it's hardcover as well!

My mistake, I thought that the third hardcover volume also encompassed the 7 and 8 trades. I just miscounted how many arcs were encompassed in every hc. Hey, give me a break, I started collecting it in trade format after the second hardcover. :p

OOooohhh, very nice! I'm gonna have to pick that up too :)

Also, I read some of the Ultimate issues available on Marvel.com, and I have one gripe.

The art. Now I realize that the look of comics has changed a lot in the past couple of years, but I can't help but feel that it looks TOO 'new-age' and glossy. I don't particularly like Peter's character look, but I can get over it because he's supposed to be a teen. But why does Uncle Ben look buff?

Does the art get better later on?

I'm really glad that you enjoyed this, Wellington.

Loeb's script absolutely heart-breaking at times, and Sale's art is expressive and clear, while also capturing that nostaligic flavor of the Romita-era Spider-Man. Take Wellington's recommendation -- along with Ult. Spider-Man: Power and Responsibility, this is the BEST Spider-Man story to come out in the last 5 years. Really worth checking out.

Nomo, what's the word on the other Loeb/Sale books? I got Long Halloween, but I am thinking of picking up Hulk: Gray and Daredevil: Yellow... I love Hulk so I'll definitely get Gray, but I dislike Daredevil. I dunno man it's your call, you haven't let me down yet.

Of the Loeb/Sale books, my favorite is probably Superman For All Seasons, with Spider-Man: Blue not far behind. If you're even remotely interested in Superman, you should definitely pick up Superman For All Seasons -- it's unique in the sense that each 'season' (fall, winter, spring, summer) is narrated by a different character (Jonathan Kent, Lois, Luthor, Lana). Sale's art, with painted colors, is probably the best work of his career. Highly recommended.

Daredevil: Yellow is pretty good, but again, not as good as Spider-Man: Blue. If you can get the Daredevil: Yellow TPB for a good price, I'd definitely buy it (I own it in hardcover, but I might be a bit biased because I'm a DD fanboy). Hulk: Gray isn't quite as good -- the story is incredibly light, and Sale's art is very sparse -- I think Loeb/Sale were under some heavily deadlines to finish this book, because it seems a bit rushed.

So yeah, definitely grab Superman For All Seasons, and grab Daredevil: Yellow as well, if you've got the money. Both are winners. Hulk: Gray isn't really worth buying, IMO.

Damn, the cover art for Blue is awesome, definitely a throwback to the Romita era! I'll be sure to pick that one up too!

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
I hadn't bought a comic book in years, but I picked up the Barnes & Noble hardcover of Ultimate Spider-Man (#s 1-39) tonight after reading this thread. I just finished it a little while ago, and I'm definitely getting HC #4, though I think I'll wait for the next HC instead of getting trade #9 right now.
I'm liking the whole collection thing a lot more than individual comics.

well not really...yet

Yeah, I've been doing the whole getting back into comics thing for a while and I've been doing strictly TPBs. It's just a whole lot easier.
