No. There weren't exploding 7800X3D.
There were a few motherboard makers, most famously, Asus, that had their motherboards giving too much SoC voltage.
So AMD had to enforce a limit with a new AGESA, to limit motherboards and prevent them from killing CPUs.

Doesnt the 14900K has more cores and threads? Doesnt that makes it better than the 7950X3D for unoptmized games?

One of the primary reasons a game would be “unoptimized” is that it overly relies on a single or small amount of threads, so not necessarily.
