Instead of directly attacking the fans, she should consider asking why would someone be happy that a project gets cancelled.

Sony became the industry leader over the last decade with high quality cinematic single player games. By taking risk with plenty new IPs and changing the formula of existing (i.e. GoW).

We, their fans and returning customers, want to see this trend to at least continue alongside the GaaS trend, not replaced from it. So when we trad about GoW live service, Horizon MMO, Days Gone 2 not getting greenlight but GaaS game instead, 200-400m down the drain for Concord, ee are getting anxious.
Anxious that we will lose the kind of entertainment we'e been getting for over 10 years and is mainly provided by Sony.

Let's be realistic, Sony like every other company has a limited budget to allocate for development and they cannot develop in parallel as many single player games as before, if they are also developing the same amount of GaaS.

Finally, fake gamers are the kind of gamers that pay a couple games a year and spend most of their time with F2P games, not us with the huge libraries of single player games with most of them bought at full price on release.

Takes like this are certainly indicative of the problems in the gaming industry.

There is a raft of ‘creators’ who clearly have a massive sense of entitlement and no market. The industry will course-correct through the purchasing decisions that we actual gamers make.

Alanah’s takes will always be big news and get massive hits because of the obvious. She will always side with the entitled creators because they are her people. I would be amazed if she has had to pay for a game in the last few years or platinumed any for that matter. Who is the fake gamer in that scenario?

Hopefully the outcome will be:

1. An uncharted 5 where we can watch people go up ladders again.

2. A spidey 3 where we play as a badass Peter Parker for the whole game against a smorgasboars of classic villains.

3. A God of War set in Egypt where we play as Kratos the whole way through with some dialogue that sounds like it may could have been spoken by people 4000 years ago.

People can be sick of GAAS games, studios known for single player experiences forced to work on GAAS titles but also be compasionate of cancelations and layoffs. We can have both. Nobody likes to see studios waste time and money on shit projects.

She should be discussing how game developers aren't listening to their audiences and setting themselves up for doom. Chasing the gaas gravy train and being greedy. Not settling for profits from single player games. They are basically playing the loot box game and trying to hit home runs.

What a cynical viewpoint. Elden Ring, BG3, Wukong, etc. would all beg to differ with her 'quality doesn't matter' take on the gaming industry. And those are just some recent examples, there's are tonnes more over the years and in the present. Good games do sell well, really well actually, and they always have.

As well, Ubi is a bad example. They've been making decisions for years now which caused the decline in their sales and profits. Way before GaaS was the new buzzword and end goal for many publishers, they were already forcing their IPs into their open world formula (whether it made sense or improved the quality of the game or not) and injecting egregious micro transactions into all their titles - plus changing the design of their games to capitalize on them, eg. time savers. Their decline to what we see now (a company on the verge of collapse) has nothing to do with "quality" games.

What I'm getting from her is she is mostly referring to games that she believes are 'quality' which have gone on to fail. Always easier to blame anything but the people who made the games and their decisions, after all. Finally, Concord and its impact on Sony (cancelling unreleased GaaS titles) further disproves her argument.

I think she very often just goes with the flow of whatever her small circle of Twitter and/or industry friends think or say. The use of phrases like "fake gamers" and "tourists" just further exemplifies that. Labels like that are normal in the constrained world she inhabits, but don't resonate with the majority of people who game - as can be seen by many of the replies here and elsewhere.

Basically, she's out of touch and it shows in many of her hot takes.
