IGN completely trashes the DS

DS and PSP: Meet the Handhelds
If these two handhelds were to have a conversation, it would sound like...

December 17, 2004 - Have you ever wondered what it would be like if the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP had a voice? No? Well we have! So, we thought we'd have a little year-end fun and do a little handheld role-playing. Both handhelds have their strenghts, weaknesses, and definitely a character all their own.

So, we've personified them a bit, thrown in some recognizeable characters, and then set them up to have a, well...conversation. Uhh...maybe it's just better if you watch it. At the very least, we promise you'll be amused.
Man, I wish I had I had insider so I could get quality articles like this!

Heh, I just failed to renew mine about a month ago after 2 years. GAF really made it unnecessary... will miss the seldomly-updated Gaming Life in Japan though.

Geez, that was terrible.

And yes, they're making it more and more obvious that Sony is paying them off re. the PSP and DS :P

What a poorly done video feature.
The video quality is terrible, the production is terrible, and the dialogue is terrible.
Why do you approve this stuff, IGN?

HIRE ME AND GIVE ME AN XL1. I WILL PRODUCE BETTER QUALITY STUFF THAN THIS.

I think the last time I visited IGN was when IGNPS2 linked some photo on there front page and the host changed the source to gay porn.

WTF? :lol Hey and I love your avataar man, that was my favorite SP episode. People should just leave the man alone though. :D

That wasn't on the front page. It was in the mailbag and it was just an image linked from Something Awful, and you know what happenes when you do that.

I put zero stock into what those assholes say these days. I look at screenshots, watch the movies, but pass on their two cents.

They did that? Haha, idiots

As long as people keep visiting the site or paying for insider they'll keep doing this thinking people care about their opinions and ideas. Oh well.

IGN may pull juvenile shit like this once in awhile, but at least their production values on video reviews/videopreviews/videointerviews/video whatever is a step above gamespot complete.

And I don't have to listen too monotone man.

I still remember when they kicked off the service with something along the lines of How to Draw Craig Harris in 4 Steps. IGN is what it is, but it certainly has me longing for sites like Fastest Gaming News (FGN) which was just straight news with minimal ads. Not the most reliable news source (such as reporting a spoof story about the GBC's successor being named NutEater), but at least it left most of the opinions on the cutting room floor.

Except the time when someone sent FGN a photoshopped picture of Link from SSB:M and they printed it as front-page news as "First picture of Zelda GCN!"

Alright. This thread is fucking stupid. It is that impossible to believe that the majority of people who own both a DS and a PSP like the PSP better.

Im so fucking shocked.... I mean, editors at IGN HAVE AN OPINION?

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but we are talking about videogames here people, journalistic integrity in regards to bias is a moot point.

Get over it. IGN likes PSP better. Most people with PSP and DS systems in hand like PSP better! (In fact, I havent met a single person who owns both and likes the DS better... this may change as I am doing a roundtable tomorrow night on DS versus PSP)

I kinda feel bad for alot of people outside of Japan. You whine and complain about how IGN hates DS this, IGN trashes DS that... defending your DS purchase.

The DS is awesome. At this point, the PSP is better. Deal with it.

and yeah, Gofreak, I know you were tongue in cheek... but im sick of IGN Hates _____ threads.

I don't agree with that blanket statement. I know quite a few people that own both and are MUCH more into the DS as a gaming platform. A lot of the people I know, only like the PSP for it's multimedia functions. Once better games are out that may change, but right now that's how I see it.

I agree with it fully, because it is true. The DS buzz lasted about 10 days in Japan. I think the DS is cool, but the PSP is in a different league. The only thing holding back most people on this board from holding a similar opinion is the price of import units.

The DS is NOT about graphics, what part of that do people not understand? Of course if you are going to judge them by that, or the screen you will pick the PSP. But most people that are about the gameplay will pick the DS hands down.

It's way too soon to judge which one will win out according to gameplay. Right now, both have pretty pathetic libraries. My NDS is being used as an uber GBA SP right about now.

Tetsuo, the point is that the article is retarded, not that 'OMGOMG ign dissed teh DS!'

haha, ok you got me. But you can't talk reasonably to some people. Blanket statements are all they'll understand. :D

No I got the fact the article is retarded, but the premise behind thinking the article is retarded is just as retarded... oh those guys at IGN and their PSP bias. It is equally retarded that everytime a videogame site posts some kind of opinion piece everyone on GAF has bitch and complain.

And Hardknock... i get the point of the DS. Change the way we play games.. not about graphics. If the DS means gameplay has to come in minigame spurts, then count me out. And dont fucking dare bring up Super Mario 64 as a counter to this... SM64 owns, and portable SM64 is one step up from this ownage; but thumb control is two steps down from the N64 version.

There is nothing terribly compelling on DS right now. Even sawaru (which is insanely fun) just isnt as compelling to me as Lumines or Ridge or AC!D. The only thing that really captivated me for DS was Kimishine, and it was more of a tech demo than a game. This will change, as Mario Kart and Meteos are going to make the DS a whole lot better, but as of today, PSP > DS.

In summary. IGN has an opinion. PSP>DS. Lots of people agree. It didnt make your 150 USD investment any less worthwhile. Quit bitching.

Hey i don't have either, but even the premise behind the article is retarded. I am glad I am not insider for crap like this.

I wouldn't lump the quality of the DS' library with that of the PSP's library. SM64 DS is designed in such a way that your mind is always on the control (bad thing). I spend more time concentrating on how to work with the awkward control schemes than simply enjoying myself with it. Also, it's multiplayer mode is disappointingly shallow and hopefully not an indicator of the future of DS WiFi play. Feel the Magic is nice, but it is a collection of minigames that get old after they are beaten a few times -- it's not that much more complex than some of the better online Flash games. The Metroid demo is completely barren as far as compelling gameplay is concerned, but it gets a pass since it *is* only a demo.

Ridge Racers alone is better than the entire current DS lineup, in my opinion. Meaning, there is no DS game that I would personally want to play more than it. RR is a great game with great, seamless control and is surprisingly polished. It's the game that makes you think that Sony delivered. Add in Lumines (I've played this), Minna no Golf (going by impressions), and Metal Gear Acid (ditto), I'd venture to say that it may not even be close.

But this post is so subjective that... well... it's really subjective!

*shrugs* That's completely subjective, of course. I dig Mario 64, to a certain degree, and really liked Feel the Magic. I never liked the original Mario 64, I actually like Mario 64 DS much better. So I'm actually pretty pleased with it. As far as controls, I can control the game equally well with either the DPad or the stylus, so it's certainly not a disctraction for me.

Aside from Lumines, the PSP has NOTHING (out now) I want to play. On the DS? Nothing left, until Rayman, Wario Ware, (and maybe) Meteos hit, at least. So, yeah, as far as my tastes go, I can and do lump both of them together. Hell, I'm not even sure I'll like Lumines, but it's the only game out now or soon to be out that intrigues me.

At least the NDS has got its superior GBA playback to keep me amused in the meantime. If I had a PSP right now, I'd probably only be playing Lumines, and no guarantee that I'd like it!

Mejilan said:

Agreed. Calling the libraries of these systems "pretty pathetic" is also quite subjective, so that's par for the course :)

Personally, I wasn't all that hyped for the launch games (just the system itself) -- Ridge Racers really surprised me and the experience it offers blows away the one that I had in the two weeks prior with the American DS launch titles.

RR, Lumines, and AC!D are so, so, so much better than the DS library. Mingol, too, if you like golf games. I haven't touched my DS since I got my PSP; I'll bring it out again over Xmas break, but just to play a GBA game. Sawaru and Kimishine's magic both faded fast; after the initial minigame rush, they don't have what it takes to hold up. And Hitofude and Zookeeper are both good puzzle games, but Lumines smokes them both in presentation AND depth.

Yes, there are lots of titles on the horizon for the DS which will make it more appealing, but right now the PSP launch lineup absolutely destroys the DS. I can believe there are people who, owning both systems, have higher hopes for the DS. They may be into it more as a "gaming platform." But if you're choosing a system for the games themselves, and not its theoretical potential as a "platform," PSP utterly decimates the DS. It's almost unnerving how dead DS hype is in Japan; as WarPig said, the PSP and Ridge Racers were "ike a big-ass .44 Magnum hollowpoint right through Satoru Iwata's jive-talking head."

And like mashoutposse, I was totally not hyped for the PSP pre-launch - I only got one to do coverage for U.S. sites and magazines. It's the games themselves, not my expectations, which have blown me away.

Im starting to think Nintendo is purposely holding back DS games to give 3rd parties some of the spotlight. I'm trying out games I'd never dream of playing now. Like Tiger Woods and it's actually pretty good! Who would've thought it.

Yep, I don't find the either the PSP or the DS launch libraries to be all that compelling, outside of one or two titles here and there, scattered around a couple of weeks or months. Trust me, I'm not particularly happy about it. The GBA, by comparison, and a packed and exciting launch. The DS and PSP are muted compared to that, imho.

But what makes you think you're not part of this group of "some people"? This is not even the first time you've made a blanketed statement either. You raise objection to others doing so and write about them in disdain, yet you do the exact same thing.
