[IGN] I’m Getting Bored of Every PlayStation Game Telling the Same Story

Joining a conversation you are not part of only to make a comment that has nothing to do with anything was not worth it. This is not the first time I've gotten a weirdly personal response out of you, so please 'just chill out'.

I'm Getting Bored of Every PlayStation Game Telling the Same Story

Than spend time on something else, personally the mix of horizon/gow/lou/sm games hit home, they're the franchises carrying PlayStation today, it's not shooters like the ps3 generation.

Revenge is the only thing they can think of to justify murder with no regard for human life.

Make last of us where Joel just hugs people.

I dont care about stories, they can be whatever they want.

My issue with them is mechanically, am just pressing some random buttons and game keeps clearing by itself.

Even if I set difficulty higher, it just feels like cheap deaths.

Which is why I prefer games that keep gameplay first. Or GAAS games even.

Someone should make a game about the state of all that's bad in our world today. But nobody has the guts to tell a real story like this.

As long as Playstation is located in California, creativity will stay dead. This is the main problem currently.

I think only 2 games are about vengence currently.

Sure if we talk about movies. But there are much more interesting material from Japan about Samurai. The main problem is lack of imagination, they just copy paste some famous Samurai movies (infused with woke ideology obviously).
They have never hidden the fact that they have taken inspiration from Samurai movies, heck, its got modes dedicated to some of the best Samurai movie and anime creators (Korusawa, Miike and Watanabe)

And what is this (obvious) woke ideology you talk of?

Btw, pretty much every Zelda game is kill Gannon, and Mario has to save a princess. Are you tired of that yet IGN, you massive bellends?

An unattractive woman for the main role, so for now it's just light but we don't know yet if there are others woke elements. The voice actress is a far-lef extremist, so why did SP pick here?

Its worth nothing Simon Cardy has previously rated many Sony cinematic experiences very highly and this dude also loved Square Enix's Avengers game, so take with a pinch of salt the dudes been high on sony for a long time

I'm very tired of 3rd person action games now. Sony is sitting on a ton of interesting IPs and does nothing with them.

Where is a new Wipeout or Killzone?

They have Naughty Dog, Guerrilla, Sucker Punch and Insomniac basically making the same game with a different setting/skin.

Bluepoint was turned to trash with GaaS and support roles, Media Molecule is still chasing the GaaS dream (they'll probably be shutdown). PD and San Diego are single IP sweatshops.
Housemarque is finishing the male version of Returnal.

It's all so boring...

Unattractive? they modelled the character off the voice actress, that's VERY common these days. She is about as normal a Japanese looking character set in the 1600's as you can find, they aren't going to be plastered in make up, she is going to be covered in dirt, blood etc. Not only that but an unattractive woman in the game does not make it woke, that's a real reach.

And they picked her because she's A) half Japanese and B) because she was good in the audition? So what if she's far left, far right, whatever, it doesn't affect the game at all, she isn't a writer affecting the games dialogue.

So you are really stretching with calling Yotei woke, but I get it, it was funny the first time someone said Ghost of Wokei
(If there is something woke in the game that absolutely no reviewers or anyone else who's completed the game is suddenly found then I'll hold my hands up, but so far zip has been found)

To be fair, I think it's that we've come to expect Nintendo to prioritize pure gameplay, and Sony to prioritize big budget "movie games". If they're all going to have this third-person action adventure template with a lot of repeated mechanics and walking, then the base expects a focus on presentation and story.

I mean, they are 3rd person action games and if you are fed up of those then so be it, but I wouldn't say they are the same with a different skin at all, but third person story based action games is what people want from Sony mostly? they are certainly some of my favourite games (heck, I wish they'd make a new Uncharted). But I think thats why they have the likes of R&C and Astrobot to at least give some more variety.

I do however agree with you on both Killzone and Wipeout (and also Resistance) but those games simply do not sell as well as other games made by Sony's studios. I think 'maybe' Wipeout has run its course though at least until it can be done with full ray-tracing. But both Killzone and Resistance deserve either new games, full remakes or at the very least remasters.

Also, we don't know what Bluepoint is working on do we?

Damn, even IGN getting some common sense these days.

Though, they're probably talking about something other than men being written as inept dummies and women begrudgingly having to save them/show them what they are doing wrong..
That pretty much sums up Sonys games mostly. Bad ass boss women ruling the games and the games mostly open world walking sims.

Whatever it is, it's very far away, since their GAAS game was cancelled earlier this year.

Okay, so what are the alternative stories? It's easy to slag something off, but to not provide the alternative is just pure rage bait.

For one, I actually think the premise for the Horizon games is really solid. Certainly not used in any other Sony game I'm aware of. Open-world robot dinosaur hunting game at its core.

TLOU stories are more nuanced than we give them credit for. Linear action/horror shooting/stealth game at its core.

Spider-Man games basically follow the same kind of stories as the films. Open-world superhero game with combat, fun traversal and light puzzling at its core.

GOT is all about a samurai's honour, and GOY focuses on revenge. But then what else could you base an historical Japanese samurai game on? Save the princess? Time travel? Mutant sandwich's? Open-world combat heavy focussed game with exploration at its core.

The GOW games are loosely based on mythology. Linear combat/puzzle adventure games at their core.

None of those IPs play the same, look the same, or have the same stories.

Yep, exactly. Here's an example of what I'm really getting at. This is the author of this article.....

And here (timestamped) Simon also says Expedition 33 is one of his favorite games all-time.

How is Expedition 33 NOT similar in story "tone" to these other games he's saying he's tired of?

I see your point. If I had to play Devils Advocate for IGN, I'd say they're responding to modern PlayStation being unbelievably safe with their sequels and Expedition 33 simply being a new, narrative rich, fantasy based IP that's (apparently) a GotY contender.

But again to your point, he explicitly states "grief" as a major theme...which is also a major theme in a number of modern PlayStation franchises. My takeaway is...he (IGN author) is just a normal man. A normal innocent man.

The funny thing is, it's easy to show that these people that say these things are lying right now. Your point about grief and revenge are perfect though. We've seen or heard about those stories for literally 1,000s of years!

For gaming, Expedition 33 is one of the most intelligently crafted games in the last 20 years. the story is absolutely sublime and throws some serious curveballs at you to fuck with your expectations. To compare it to any generic game is pretty disingenuous imo

IGN is just trolling at this point. I won't give them the time of day.

I have never once picked up a game because of the story. The real story is the one that I make as I'm playing a game. It's a story as old as time - fail, fail some more, get gud, win.
