IGN plays Sunset Overdrive

I expect wild swings in reviews with high 80s from some sites down to low 70s for others. Mix in the 10/10 reviews from the bullshit sites plus one or two 4/10 or 5/10 from reviewers who just couldn't click with the vibe and Metacritic will average anywhere from 74 - 81.

Game looks fun but I have a hard time convincing myself to pull the trigger when we are only two weeks away from Halo.

Meta: 84.

Why do you think that?

Dumb hipsters.

They'll hate it.

Nah you can't hate this game unless you don't like things that flow and upon seeing the fun loving artstyle and colours in your face you somehow think of how lame you are and become depressed and then tire of playing.

My pulled-out-of-my-ass guess too. The game's color and vibrancy an skill curve will get it high marks, but those will be balanced out by a polarizing art style (comic punk stylings and music) and the in-your-face and possibly forced humor.

With at least half a point point of spin for outlets that want to showcase some positivity right now to lighten the mood, and another full point for how content rich the single player is - of which I really have no idea.

I'm guessing it will be a mixed bag as well, but with most leaning more on the positive side. The game just looks too creative and really stands out from the rest of what is releasing this Fall.

Geez, MCC is so close. I'm not sure how to feel about Sunset. I like the look but I hate the humor. Gameplay wise is sorta mixed looking for me, wish they just had a demo kiosk or something.

just hope that as the game goes on you proceed to more enemy dense areas, no fun amassing an arsenal and upgrades if you're still fighting handfuls of enemies at a time.

Not sure if it's the streams or what but the game looks like it has trouble sometimes with a lot of action.

I had Sunset Overdrive preordered and paid off but changed it last minute to the MCC. I want this game to be awesome but some of the PR for it has rubbed me the wrong way (look at us! We're so clever, ironic, and outlandish!). Between MCC, AC Unity (which I may wait on), SSB Wii-U, and Dragon Age Inquisition: Inquisitor Edition, I can't really afford anything that I'm not sure about.

I wish this was released in the summer.

Game looks really fun in this video. Hope the advertising pays off and it sells well, doesn't seem to have much hype behind it.

I have a friend who is reviewing it who said most missions are just fetch quests :(

Still hyped for it though, hoping it's as crazy fun as it looks. Predicting an average score of 77.
I really, really want to like this game but the controls just seem too... floaty, almost and I feel as if it'd get boring quite quickly.
Can you tell floaty controls from video? Or did you play it somewhere?

Crazy Taxi + JSR + DR ?

I can have fun with that. In fact, more crazy taxi would be awesome. Like a racing aspect.

In this he does mention there have been mostly fetch quests so far too. He did go on to say that they make it interesting, you hope they do that often.

Haha yeah maybe! I still think it looks fun, He also said main story was 12 hours @ 38% completion, and it makes fun of every video game stereotype including itself.

Just saw your stealth edit, nah he didn't which is why I'm a little worried. He said basically you meet people, they need something you go get it, rinse and repeat.

Can't be... :(

He's completed it...perhaps over simplifying it? Under-remembering the awesome fun he had while playing those missions...surely?

I hope they didn't rush this. It looks so fun just moving about and shooting things. I got to have some faith.

I think this will review well, looks like a lot of fun but I can see a few sites giving it a shit score bringing the meta score down. So I will guess a meta score of around 75 with the majority of reviews being positive.

As someone who generally likes Insomniac's work (except for the seizure inducing Resistance 3) - I'm going to guess this game averages out to between 79-83.

Infamous got an 80 and that game was mainly criticised for having a lifeless world. SO has a pretty vibrant world, so I'm thinking 82-83 meta.

sounds about right 78-85ish game

Reviewers just don't seem to "get" Insomniac games. Then again Insomniac doesn't seem to "get" what goes into a AAA title. Their catalog is generally nice to play, but rarely manages to rise above the trappings of whatever genre the title winds up in (the only notable exception being Resistance 2's 8 player class based co-op mode - which was amazing at the time).

Sunset Overdrive seems to not take itself too seriously, which I feel will help it score points with reviewers. I feel that the humor, or what I've seen so far, will be needlessly compared to Borderlands - the climbing and grinding to games like infamous, etc. Reviewers, unless they decide to use their brains for once - will compare the game to everything it isn't...rather than judging it for what it is.

I don't own an Xbox One, and even if I did I don't know that Sunset Overdrive would be a must have - but from what I've seen it just won't get a fair shake with reviewers - it's not a game they are going to "get."

They seem pretty consistent, with just a few falters in the past few games.

I expect around Second Son reviews, so around 78-82 on meta.

I love me some Insomniac and R&C, so I'd like see another franchise of theirs do well.

Much like their really high Forza Horizon 2 score?

I don't know what's going on with Polygon, they're hard to entirely predict, but sometimes they make you wonder. After all, this happened.

(For context, the framerate was drastically higher in the PS4 version, and this is how they handled this fact in their review..)

Is there any skill involved in the grinding? All the footage seems to suggest that once the player's on a rail, it's impossible to fall of unless he or she chooses to do so.

It's press X to magnetize to to the rails.

maybe the critics will change your mind tonight!
