IGN plays Sunset Overdrive

After selling my XBO shortly after I purchased it last year I'm ready to return to the flock. I'll be picking one up next week and will probably grab Sunset Overdrive as well.

Fingers crossed it delivers.

Where's the fun?

Young people won't get it,but I nearly spit out my drink to damn funny.

Is there any skill involved in the grinding? All the footage seems to suggest that once the player's on a rail, it's impossible to fall of unless he or she chooses to do so.

Enemies can spit fire onto the rails, you can be sideswiped if an enemy is next to you while grinding. Which is important if you're able to swivel back and forth between feet-grinding and undergrinding.

The more I see of this game the less I like it. The platforming/character movement was always extremely weak in the Ratchet and Clank series, just way too floaty and unresponsive, so it's a weird choice to make a game that highlights it. Their sense of humor has somehow gotten worse over time as well.

Hoping for ~70 metacritic but it'll probably be closer to 85.

Why would you hope for a lower score?

honestly, this is kind of how I feel. I don't like the sliding on rails stuff or the floaty animations. My hand has been hovering over the "cancel preorder" button today, in part because I'm not sure how much time I'll actually be able to play it in the near future, and in part because I just bought two games (AI and TEW) with at least two more to buy this year. It's tough.

edit: other than that last part, I don't know why you'd hope for a score most consider low for any game. why root against something?

Part of me thinks that it'll get like a 95 Metacritic just because it looks to be a unique game styling. Part of me thinks it'll get 60 for the same reason.

I don't usually watch IGN videos, but it seems silly they spend so much time talking about how much fun the game is to watch. Shouldn't that be up to the viewer to decide?

The gaming community sure is fickle. I really don't get why people do such things.

Floaty and unresponsive? Ratchet got tight platforming mang.

I now kinda feel that way too. It's like they just combined their biggest franchises and kept the floaty awkward handling of the ratchet series that always bothered me.
Game looks like a good deal of fun though. But maybe not as much fun as i thought in the beginning, when i thought it was a musthave.
Great artdirection.

I'm not fickle at all. I have no brand loyalty. I do however have limited funds and have to decide what I will get more use out of at any one time and what I feel represents better value for the foreseeable future.

The XBO had issues at launch and has had large barren spells throughout the year but Microsoft's speed of improvement has impressed me and now I have the disposable income to justify owning both, I will.

Not that this is the place to discuss it.

I want it to be a wake-up call for Insomniac. I remember feeling like they had potential back around the release of the first R&C, but it's been over a decade and their 3D platforming/character movement is still terrible. They have enough money by now that there's no excuse for not putting some of it into making their games actually feel good to play.

I wish reviewers would call companies out for shit like this. It's 2014, why does your character still jump more awkwardly than Sora in the original Kingdom Hearts? But Insomniac will probably get away with it.

R&C platforming has never stood up to any of the 3D mario games. Maybe that's a high standard, but this is supposed to be an AAA game, right?

This is one of very few big games that tries to do something cool with its art style, and how often do we get arcade style grinding fun these days.

You'd think people would hope for a good score and that they could tweak out any issues to get a nice flow going, which it seems to have from various footage I've seen. As opposed to not get any more games like it by hoping the game does poorly.

I'm not even going to get an x1 anytime soon (unfortunately) and I still feel like having a copy on my desk, not even to help them out - I feel like it'd be rather nice and shiny.

Well if I wake up to really positive reviews I will cancel my CoD order and buy SO instead. I really hope it's good , the videos have me unconvinced so looking forward to reviews and impressions from Ameri-GAF

Wait can you explain exactly why R&C's platforming is terrible...???

What makes you think the movement in Sunset is terrible?

I don't know what games you're playing if you think the movement/jumping in R&C is bad. I mean, saying something like Ratchet jumps more awkwardly than Sora in the original KH.... like, is that not factually wrong? lol. Reviewers don't call that out because it's not nearly as much of a problem as you think it is. It actually generally gets praised for it's tight and responsive controls. I've never heard anyone say an R&C game outside of the original controls bad.

Also, R&C is not nearly as much of a platformer as Mario games are. If you're just comparing jumping/movement mechanics, R&C games have pretty much got that down for the most part. If you're saying the platforming in general is more robust in Mario games, well, R&C doesn't really intend on being a full blown platformer like Mario games do.

edit: wait not sure if you were targeting sunset or r&c with that KH comment

They have a lot of trouble with momentum. The jump is floaty, the ground movement is slippery, interactions with the environment (wall jumps, grabbing ledges) are all way too slow and sloppy.

The only platforming/movement aspect that actually feels solid is the jumping wrench slam.

With Sunset Overdrive, they still haven't learned how to do momentum. I honestly wish they would just copy the game system from Infamous, it would make for a better game..

You need to watch someone with some skill play the game. The traversal has plenty of momentum to it.

All this coming from someone who's not even played the game in any depth.

Christ.

I think momentum is pretty well done in the game. The combination of the speed boost, air dash and the high jump after slamming makes it really fun. I'm flying across the city at times when I get a good rhythm going.

I've watched 4 or 5 gameplay videos from different sources in the past week and I'm just not seeing it. Is there a video you can point to that shows off what high skill play looks like?

Well one of the reasons why a lot of precision hasn't been focused into the R&C series is because from Going Commando to Into the Nexus it wasn't really a platformer (in fact I'd argue that Insomniac has never made a proper platformer due to the fact that Spyro wasn't really platforming focused and most of the segments were supplementary) and it was mostly focused on the shooting aspects. Yeah I feel that wall jumping and hookshot stuff is very flimsy, but that's not why I play R&C.

SO, however, and from what I've played of Chaos Squad at a local event, is completely different platforming wise in comparison to R&C (which is one of the reasons why I roll my eyes at people declaring that SO is just the Xbox's version of R&C.) Unlike R&C movement and momentum does play a keypart, and stopping on your own/being interrupted by an enemy can fuck up your flow.

Say for instance I go rail > jump > bounce > jump > wallrun > rail, if I were to be interrupted at any time during this, my entire pacing and the speed I've built from doing this is essentially ruined. Speed really does play a factor in SO's platforming and really does work in your favor.

but of course we aren't seeing this because we're not really seeing high-skill play at all from anyone sadly.

Watch the Insomniac Chaos Squad streams. I don't have links to hand, but someone will hopefully post them.

I'd post mine but MS seems to have blocked regular users from uploading clips. I don't have a capture card or anything either :(

Just thought I'd mention this, Target has a deal where you get a free 3-month xbox live gold sub card for picking up Sunset Overdrive. I'm not sure if it's in-store only or what but it's a damn good deal as you're basically getting the game for $35. My gold sub runs out in a few months anyway so I think I may do this, even if I'm not super-hyped on the game. If reviews are decent I can't say no to a $35 new release. I also need another game besides Forza Horizon 2 to play on my ONE.

Just finished it, most fun I've had in a game this year.

For the folks afraid of the game being slow, at the start I was thinking the same thing, but when you learn the controls and unlock other moves it gets pretty fast.

Finally a video game that isn't ashamed to be a video game

FINALLY. I'm so sick of these video games being embarrassed to admit that they're games. Like, come on Mario, get over yourself.

But yeah, I totally turned around on traversal in this game after seeing some of those different clips. Looks cool as shit.
