IGN's Top 100 RPGs of All Time

Most of that list is questionable but I agree with their top 3. I would put FFVI over Chrono Trigger but its real close.

I'm surprised Lost Odyssey didn't even make the top 100.

The only thing I like about RPG lists is that if there's games I haven't played listed It makes me want to try them out. I saw that Baldur's Gate & II are available on mobile or steam and I always hear praise for them so I want to finally give them a shot. Do they play like Diablo? Also PC or mobile which feels better to play?
.

They are real time with pause combat systems based on the 2nd edition of DND. So you can pause, and change your tactics on the spot. Not very similar to Diablo

Why would Oblivion be on the list?

Because Oblivion is amazing! Morrowind is a bit obtuse to me so I won't bring it into the comparison, but compared to Skyrim, I far prefer Oblivion. Lucien Lachance is better than Cicero, the Gray Fox is better than whatever the fuck Skyrim's Thieves Guild questline was, the Fighter's Guild was longer than the Companions, and the Arena was the shit. Skyrim is too gray and drab. The green fields of Cyrodiil are soooo much more interesting. Ayleid ruins are also much more interesting than Draugr caves. And skills such as Athletics and Acrobatics, which made you run fast and jump high, really made you feel powerful towards the end of the game and made traversing the world fun. Oh, and the music is 1000x better than Skyrim's. Listen to "Harvest Dawn" or "Watchman's Ease," the epitome of good, relaxing fantasy music.

I know I'm in the minority on this but it's a topic I'm very passionate about. I could go on and on haha

I'm totally fine with FF6 and Chrono Trigger being the top 2 but how in the fuck does the original Phantasy Star for the master system not even make the list???? That game was amazing for it's time and it still holds up today. How many NES/Master system games can you say that about. Meanwhile we have a lot of games on here that I would not really consider RPG's.

Speaking of WoW, I'm just now realizing FF XIV didn't rank when if MMO's are counted XIV should absolutely list.
They are nothing like Diablo, if you played PoE or even Divinity Original Sin the gameplay/style of the game is similar to that.

I would play them on PC personally, though I did not try Mobile version.

Diablo tries to be accessible and arcadey as much as possible, combat is mostly holding down left-click until loot pinatas pop. Baldur's Gate tries as hard as possible to replicate the pen-n-paper Dungeons and Dragons experience and is much more complex.

Diablo is much more action-oriented, Baldur's Gate is more hardcore roleplaying, they're going for different things.

Hmmm well I'm still interested so I guess I'll pick it up for PC and give both games a shot. Are they long? I would skip to II but I I feel like I should give the first one a try.

Chrono Trigger is interesting because it really is one of the best games ever made, but it's not the best example of an RPG. It lacks the depth and scope of a lot of the other games on the list.

For that reason it would be higher on my list of best games than on my list of best RPGs if that makes sense.

I'll still play Chrono Trigger today, but it's not a game I pick up if I'm specifically looking to scratch an RPG itch.

My actual top 10 would be really boring, probably 5 or 6 FF games, but outside of that I think Persona 3, Suikoden 5, Shadow Hearts Covenant, Grandia 1, Dragon Quest VI would all be very high up.

I really liked Dragon Age Origins but that seems to be considered pleb around here :p

You can easily get 100-200 hours out of them.

BG1 is about 30-40 hours total.

BG2 is however long af. Probably takes around 70 hours minimum for full playthrough. Most of the content is high quality too.

BG2 is the superior game as seen from this list. It improves pretty much everything over BG1 (except exploration which was nicely done in BG1). If you feel like it you can start directly from BG2. It works as an own game as well.

You can skip BG1 and just go to 2. The game is a direct sequel, but you won't really feel lost if you don't have the background. Both games are long.

BG2 > BG1 in the same way that SMB3 > SMB1

Isn't there a mod that converts all BG1's content into BG2, to play it as one continuous experience?

No Final Fantasy V, yet they included the first, which doesn't even have the quickie charm of Dragon Quest I. Lame.

Also, no PD Saga is weird. (Never did play it, though it's one of those musts in the genre.)

I do respect some of their other choices. Contrary to GI, they actually know their stuff.

No FFV but average ass FF1 is on the list? List is automatically a joke just for that.

77 - Valkyria Chronicles
64 - Lunar: Eternal Blue
61 - Lunar: Silver Star Story
53 - Phantasy Star IV
52 - Final Fantasy VII
41 - Skies of Arcadia
40 - Final Fantasy IX

^all these games are too low

Bunch of bullshit games noone even liked all over this list who the hell made this? Its the worst list I've seen this year and this has been a bad year for lists.

Easily in my top 10 games ever. Thought it was too low on this list. Many others would say it doesn't belong at all.

It got a lot more respect on the GI list. I agree much more with GI than IGN on a lot of the rankings in the top 30 or so (especially since 3 of my all time favs are in top 10) , but Skyrim at #1 is just bewildering. I guess it has completely changed the landscape of modern AAA Western RPG's for the foreseeable future...for better or worse.

I'm hoping to see Chrono Trigger in the top 5. Played the game for the first time last year and it was excellent overall package. This was also the "bad* PS1 version. I need to try out FFVI and other games around that time. Also, hope Earthbound is high is well.

Chrono Trigger is #1 and Earthbound is #19.

FF7, Chrono Trigger, and Earthbound are my 3 favorite RPGs, so I'm happy that at least two of them placed so high.

The funny part about Final Fantasy ranking is that I personally think DQ games do what Final Fantasy started so much better. They have way more charm while Final Fantasy is almost unplayable at this point.

That's actually a reasonable amount of hours so I'll just play both. The game looks good so I'm excited to try them out.

I'd rank top 10 like:

10 - Dark Souls
9 - Fallout
8 - FFVI
7 - Kotor
6 - Mass Effect 2
5 - Morrowind
4 - Suikoden 2
3 - FFXII IZJS
2 - FFVII
1 - Baldur's Gate 2

Swap out ME2 for System Shock 2, FFXII for FFX, Dark Souls for Demon's Souls, and Suikoden 2 for Deus Ex and this is a damn fine list.

Thanks for reading everyone! It's so awesome to see so many people discussing dope RPGs. It's a really special genre.

Yup, I just saw the listed updated now. So happy to see Chrono Trigger number one! I was my GOTY last year. I need to try out Secret of Mana, since I was not expecting that game to be that high. I might try out FFVI and one of the PS1 FF games.

Regards to Persona 4 scoring significantly higher than Persona 5, is P5 that much of a downgrade to P4? I'm still about 10-15 hours in P5, but game is not gripping me and I decided to take a break from it compared to P4 where I could not wait to see what was going to happen next.

Persona 4G at this point is pretty much the FFVII of SMT games, I don't think a lot of people will ever be able to accept anything else from Atlus coming close

As far as I'm concerned, ranking the modern Personas is like ranking Dragon Quest 3-8, there's no obvious order they should be in

Secret of Mana was one of the best coop experiences on the SNES, but if you play it solo, it's whatever. It's probably the most "You had to be there" game on the entire list.

It's a shame FFX didn't make the list. And that IV made it at all. I dig me some Cecil, but come on, X is way more fun to play.

Eh, whatever.

I'm happy that FFT and Tactics Ogre did well, and I'm happy that classic CRPG's like Planescape and Baldur's Gate 2 didn't get swept under the rug.

Pokemon Yellow being the highest rated Pokemon is just bizarre to me and Persona 4 doesn't deserve to be anywhere near the top.

Of course no actual SMT made the list despite having multiple games that would deserve it.

Everyone likes to complain about the ordering, but you guys covered most of the classics somewhere in the top 100. I am happy to see Tactics Ogre, Suikoden 2, Vagrant Story, and Fallout 2 in the top 20, along with the usual list toppers.

Kudos for not sticking a bunch of recent/popular open world adventure games with some light RPG features in there. This list is actually better than most for recency bias.

It's really weird seeing this backlash against VII to the point where games like FF IV are considered better than it. I've always had my problems with VII's fan base but I still can I objectively say VII is one of the best RPG's to exist.

It's not even a matter of being fun, X's presentation, soundtrack, battle system and story are leagues above IV's. That's not to say both don't suffer story flaws but X is way smoother than IV which has a dreadful second half with weird twists that ruin the impact of previous ones.

What are you talking about? FF VI is at #2. And FF IV and FF IX are also in there. Looks like the better FFs are there to me.

Well, the best FF of all, FFX is missing for some reason. As I'm sure you must agree, the entire list is invalid until this error is fixed.

32 - Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar

Wow one of my GoaT RPGs made the list. Thanks for making such a great game Lord British!

Can't believe the people at IGN even know this game exists. Such an original concept for a theme of an RPG at the time.

You can even play it legally for free these days on a computer I think.

It was pretty influential. Wouldn't put it past there being at least one staffer who loved it back in the day.

Another seriously weird exclusion though: Valkyrie Profile. Whatever happened to Lenneth being on this list?
