I'm having one of those "I love videogames all over again" moments. Last game to have that effect on you?

I'm sure some of you (most of you?) have had those moments where your hobby isn't doing it for you. You are either sick of playing games for a few months / years or no game really clicks to the point you want to go back and play it when you can't do that. This is still your hobby but that doesn't mean you're always on a high playing all these games coming out.

Right now i'm going through a "I love videogames all over again. This is why i started playing them in the first place" moment like i didn't have in years and it came from an IP that i always liked...but hasn't grabbed me for some entries: Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.

final-fantasy-vii-rebirth-cover-art.jpg

I bought it on preorder over a year ago. If i'm doing this topic right now it means i didn't have many hopes for it and only started playing it like 2 weeks ago...but holy shit?

I heard some criticism because of all the minigames, etc...but this such a huge step up from the original i don't even know where to start. From voice acting, the open world sections done right (instead of like Ubisoft-type games), etc. The graphic upgrade alone is something. I'm playing on PS5 Pro btw...so 60fps upscaled and it melts your eyes. Gameplay loop is addictive as hell as well. Soundtrack is honestly impressive. There are moment i just stay put listening to some kick ass track that's playing which rarely happens nowadays for me. It's actually satisfying to be with these characters again, and be a part of this world.

There's so much to do but it never feels overwhelming.

I'm now on chapter 8 and loving this shit! Th production values alone are through the roof. The game feels expensive, if you know what i mean. But expensive done right at least.

When was the last time this has happened to you? And what was the game?

I had the same with FFVII Rebirth, but for me it usually happens with 'arcadey' games, where the main focus is solely gameplay and it's just fun to pickup and play.

I just finished going through Ninja Gaiden Sigma and Ninja Gaiden II Black and, while they're tough, the gameplay is really fun and addicting.

Literally me rn

Anyway last time I felt like this was probably Cyberpunk 2077.

Witcher 3. Been playing it for the first time after getting the complete edition on sale for $10 on XSX.

Started around New Years, just wrapped up the Blood and Wine DLC last week. Incredible game.

But before that? It was definitely Rebirth. I played it nonstop from release date until around June/July last year.

Probably Baldur's Gate 3, however Rebirth is excellent. It's been a long time since a JRPG made me feel like I was going on an adventure with such a likeable and colorful cast of party members. I love how much content is in the game too. Never understood the complaints about the mini-games. Nobody is holding a gun to your head forcing you to do them. Queen's Blood alone is worthy of being a stand alone title.

Silent Hill 2 remake

In recent times yeah, I will go with this one too.

Didn't play the original and really really loved every bit of that game. Insane atmosphere and an incredible story ending.

That scene between James and Mary, when he finds her, laying on the bed, it's so fucking raw and brutal that it will stay in my memory forever.

If I had played this game when I was a kid, I'm sure it wouldn't have hit the same notes.

All the damn time for me. I just love gaming.

Recently it would be playing Split Fiction with my daughter. So many "oh shit, this is fucking cool" moments in that game.

Recently for me it's Halo 3 splitscreen with friends. We play local and online games now. We have good fun with it.

My fantasy is that my girlfriend was actually a young high school girl.
Cyberpunk.

Currently playing Astrobot and just going through the motions with that game.

Most recent ones for me. I don't go very long without finding a title I'm really impressed with.

Yea Im going through this. Usually when it happens I go to old games I already beat and just try to get the plat. That way if I drop it midway it’s no big deal.

The absolute love of videogames that I had in the past returned recently by discovering Monster Hunter World Iceborne and Street Fighter 6 that I´ve being playing non-stop these days.... God bless CAPCOM!

Before I was getting steam with Dead Cells, Diablo 2 Ressurrected, Nioh 1 and 2, Marvel vs Capcom 2 (it´s such a wellcrafted, brilliant piece of gaming!) and Bloodborne (witch I completed after several years);

There are another games (obscure, esoteric games, at least for me) that made my mind and that I never considered playing, but I loved since the beginning like SnowRunner, Warhammer Vermintide 2 (w/ Winds of Magic expansion) and Pacific Drive!

Busy days, like the good times, folks and I´m loving this gaming revival... For me, it´s like living in the 1990's again!

Cyberpunk 2077 after the updates. That story alone was amazing and it made me fall in love with the game. It's one of my top 3 fave games of all time.

Probably Black Myth and Blade Chimera for me. But I have these "I love videogames" moments pretty often, since so many great games keep coming.

I had a hard time getting through FF7 rebirth, as it was a huge snoozefest for me. If I didn't have such fond memories of the original, I would probably bounced of it. The joy of seeing the locations in updated form was cool!

Hmm, yeah, I never fully understood why some people (it seems like they exist, no?) feel like they "have to" play games.

I never get tired of playing games per se, because I simply choose not to play if I'm not in the mood. I see videogames as one of many bonuses I can slot into my life, but only when it fits.

(Which is also why plenty of my purchases stay unfinished, because why would I waste my time)

Anyway, last time was/is Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, it gives me "that extra special feeling".

I had almost forgotten how much I loved Strategy games while playing it.

Made me play, Age of Mythology Retold and Starcraft 2 on Brutal for some good times.

I recently completed Baldur’s Gate 3 and it is a phenomenal game. It’s like playing Mario 64 for the for time and realising that you’re now playing something truly revolutionary which is on a whole new level compared to what has come before.

Also, yeah, Rebirth has incredible production values and it achieves it along with such a huge scale which is amazing really. I’m not sure we’ve seen production values at that level of scale before. It’s set a new benchmark.

Stellar Blade. Everything is on point and the soundtrack seals the deal. Such a fun game with an old sci-fi style story being told in such a shiny new way.

FF7 Rebirth. I finished the game last Saturday and what a ride! It would've been my game of 2024 easily over Astro Bot.

I've played a few games recently that have had me excited to play video games again. Helldivers 2 is the one that gets me right now. The moment to moment gameplay and the sheer chaos has my friends and I in fits of laughter, win or lose it doesn't matter because the game is just so much fun with friends.

Path of Exile 2 and Baldur's Gate 3 are another two games I've played through recently with my wife and it has been awesome sharing the hobby together and having a good time coming up with strategies and playing as a team.

Gaming as an industry isn't great right now (mostly AAA studios) but there are some great games out there to play for sure.

Once you get past a certain age- these moments happen when you get in gaming ruts. I've gone through it a few times since i turned 30.
I actually may be coming out of the rut now by making it a point to complete games i start here in 2025.

So far ive got the below under my belt
Death Stranding
Astrobot
Hogwarts Legacy
90% done with FFXVI

Point is- i think ive got my groove back due to how wonderful the above have been.

Never lost hope.
If anything i get overwhelmed by how many good games keep coming out and while younger me always wanted money to be able to afford all these games.
Adult me has the money but lacks the time to get through all these games.

Ive skipped some great games because I knew i wouldnt have the time to get through them and everything else I want to play.

I have these quite often, lol. You actually do have to seek them out and yes Rebirth had a few of those moments for me. LOVED the card game for a time it was life.

Anyway, my brother is actually really needing that moment right now. He's playing less and less and what he does play he doesn't enjoy. He was always better than me at most games and I'm actually really good, so he was great. A natural. He couldn't even beat the 2nd boss in NG2....we started at the same time and I beat the game and he quit at 2nd boss....

Truth is he's burned out. He really needs to find this moment in gaming or I'm worried he may quit for a few years or forever. Sometimes what we can find ourselves so easily, others have a hard time finding. Remember that just because you love gaming doesn't mean that the struggle isn't real for others who just want to hold on to their hobby until they can find love for it again.

To those who can't find this moment, listen to me. You are not alone. All of us go through moments of doubt and pain over our hobby, but don't give up. Nothing in this life worth doing is 100% love and fun. Don't let the humdrum of the rat race or some weird temporary phycology rob you of your passion for gaming. If you don't love it now, don't worry, you will again. Keep it safe until then. Know that we are out here, playing, keeping it alive, waiting for you to return.

Recently played Ninja Garden 2 Black which was sick. When games had a focus for being fun.

I'm currently playing FF16. I'm enjoying it because I am treating it as an interactive movie. I just hate the fact the enemies are bullet sponges.

There is nothing more boring than fighting someone with near endless HP. Even basic trash mobs are hard to kill. This game would be so much better if enemies had 50% less health.

I'm also playing Space Marine 2 MP. Best MP game I've played in a long time. Better than Gears MP. The last time I had this much fun with MP was Uncharted 2 MP .
