Image editing software with the best batch/script processing options?

I do a lot of image resizing at work, and it would really speed things up if a program would automatically resize a bunch of images applying the same settings and name them sequentially (based on an initial name template I provide)... I know Paint Shop Pro lets you do that, but if I remember correctly it doesn't give you a lot of flexibility/customization in the output files' names... I guess I could check out Adobe Photoshop's batch process options (are they good?), but I'd prefer a lighter program that loads faster and doesn't slow down the system much since I often have a lot of windows open at the same time, and I just need image resizing with automatic JPEG optimization.

I use Windows XP, so no Mac execlusive apps for me. Thanks for any help.

ACDSee is excellent for that... batch conversion, and batch renaming options (not limited to graphics file types).
