Got me thinking. I watched this show too. Am I so jaded that I cant just accept people honestly want to be nice. Or is it just for ratings. It sorta reflects how I accept acts of niceness from people I dont count as friends.

So all of these nice people shows come off as big rating lie-fests that while do making people happy, make me feel miserable to watch them.

Why can't the people genuinely been nice be exploited for the sake of television ratings?

I mean... it's one thing to act nice, but it's probably easier to find nice people to do that job.

The show makes me feel human. Other than that i'm just a cold shell. So i guess its my only link to humanity that i care for.

people being nice shouldnt make a person feel uncomfortable, but it does. Maybe its from my bad experience with religious organizations.

I mean the show was great, and thats cool if they mean it, but it was hard to watch cause it was like...too nice.

You're jaded by a world that preaches "look out for number one". Selflessness is out there. Latch on to it when you can and strive to be that way.

You're just not a lovey dovey type of guy. And you experience cognitive dissonance when you watch that kinda show... and enjoy it!

The way I see it, yes ABC is doing it for ratings. But in the end, the families get a shitload of help. And ABC never tries to take the credit. The families will talk about God or angels or prayers being answered, and ABC will show it. I can't see Fox letting someone else get the credit like that. Shit, I can see Fox building a house with their logo on the roof or something.

And expensive as the show may seem with all the stuff they cram a house with, it still pales in comparison to having to pay one person several million per episode. This show is a win-win for all involved. The families get a new house, ABC gets its ratings, the viewers get a feel-good hour of TV.

Here is how I look at it...

Its a show, and its edited to make us believe that this crew is so magical and wonderful that they are helping out these poor deserving families. If it were truly nice people doing something nice, then Ty Pennington and his crew would be doing all this for free, and the contractors and builders, plumbers, ect... would also be doing it for free, and the not be getting paid by ABC.

I still like the show, but lets remember its TV, and nothing on TV is real.

well I dont need people to give up their way of life to prove its real, I just cant believe that stuff. I mean I have Olimario here preaching to me about being nice and its Olimario. I mean come on, this guys moral values rest on the head of a pin on a daily basis.

No, I mean, you're right. They hire a lot of nice lookin ppl who are good at being nice, and then exploit those ppl with problems so they can make 100x as much moeny off rating and advertising than the house they build is even worth. I mean, everything on TV is an illusion, so I think feeling jaded twoards that kind of bullshit is only natrual.

You're just now questioning the sincerity and values of a reality television show? And a show like EM is just a fancy-pants version of This Old House, fashioned for network. It isn't trying to "lie" to you. It's just constructed to be more entertaining, and less informative.

They filmed the new shows like literally down the road, one town over from me... St. James, NY. Made it a pain in the ass to go pick up my friend :p I'll be seeing this show, if only for the fact it's local.
